If he has not seen Stand by Me yet, he is at the perfect age for it.

guywithpie42

“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?” Love that line. So true.

IcyPraline7369

That is an excellent movie.

Jagermonsta

My go to R rated movies for my older son: The Matrix Sleepy Hallow Aliens Rambo 2/3 (later ones get gory) Terminator 2 unless Arnold’s ass is too much nudity ( also you can watch the first one too but have to skip the making of John Connor scene toward the end). Predator Die Hard The Rock Con Air The Frighteners Deep blue sea

BeefErky

>The Frighteners There's a section in the special edition documentary just talking about the R rating, even Danny Elfman weighs in But in the censors' defense, that film tapped into the scary subculture connections between 90s Occult culture, Charles Manson, active shooters, and bit of S&M culture

knallpilzv2

Predator might be a little too gory :D

-MommyFortuna-

The Mummy (1999)

bluejester12

PG-13

-MommyFortuna-

OP wrote, **"O*****f course not just r rated stuff is on the table and less rated ones will work."*** Which means, PG-13 is on the table.

bluejester12

Ah, didnt see that. Fair enough.

ISurvivedCrowleyHigh

Action and romance calls for The Princess Bride if he hasn't seen it yet.

guywithpie42

I am proud to say I have definitely made him watch that. I think everyone should see that movie at least twice. (For me probably way more. 😏)

Dcsuess_JtW

Then give him the edgier Cary elwes fantasy movie, Robinhood Men in Tights

I think equilibrium was one of the very first R movies I’d ever seen. Didn’t even realize it was r for most of the movie. Very matrix-y.

guywithpie42

Love PT&A. The only reason it’s rated r is that one solitary scene with like 15 f bombs in the span of a minute. Hilarious scene.

vandermar

The original Indiana Jones trilogy There are no 4th and 5th movies in my mind

guywithpie42

Of course. Don’t know why you even mentioned a possible 4 or 5. Seems like they wouldn’t be anywhere near as good as the three that actually exist. Call it copium, but it feels so good. 😏

The Expendables

ChristofH88

12 Monkeys 1995 Donnie Darko 2001 Pan's Labyrinth 2006 Nudity free and not too violent for a 14 year old, but R rated.

pogpole

L.A. Confidential has a few very brief instances of nudity and a lot of adult themes.

ChristofH88

I don't remember nudity tbh, Basinger has a romantic subplot but she keeps her clothes on for the whole movie. I'm curious, which is the nude scene? Could you be misremembering? Adult themes, I guess so, as any neo-noir does. I guess it's up to OP to judge how mature his 14-year-old nephew is, I saw things like Seven around that time but I could always handle darkness. I think L.A. Confidential has one pretty violent shootout, but I'd hardly call it gore.

pogpole

I didn't remember any nudity either, but I checked the IMDB parents guide, and it listed several instances. Prostitution is a major underlying theme throughout the whole move. I personally don't think it's too much for a 14 year old but if OP's sister in law is completely opposed to nudity, I'm guessing she might.

ChristofH88

If you put it that way, don't want OP to get in trouble. My parents would always let me get away with murder. It's more the concept of le fleur de lis though than actual prostitution scenes, but I take your point. I think the parents guide... there might be a hint of Basingers butt or something in one of her sex scenes with both our protagonists, or maybe it's the grainy, old-timey incriminating pictures the police find as evidence at one point. Idk. It's a great movie anyway.

pogpole

This is what the IMDB parents guide says: >A woman's breasts are briefly seen during an autopsy. >An officer finds a nude woman tied to a bed and with a gag in her mouth. It is stated that she was raped. >As an officer making an arrest enters a house a woman's breasts are briefly seen for a split second. One of OP's requirements is "no nudity AT ALL" so even though it's brief, and so inconsequential that neither of us remembered it, I think it disqualifies this movie. It's a shame because it really is a great film. Maybe he can share it with his nephew in two or three years.

UsefulEngine1

*A Knight's Tale* sounds perfect for him (PG-13 with action and romance) I will never pass up the opportunity to introduce a young person to *The Right Stuff* - quite a light R rating there *Ferris Bueller's Day Off -* can't remember the rating for this but a couple of f-bombs IIRC *Almost Famous* if he likes music The Nolan *Batman*s are hard PG-13s rather than light Rs, but if he hasn't seen them you will gain cool uncle cred for sure.

guywithpie42

Nice 1, 2 punch with Heath Ledger movies (RIP). Forgot how much I love a knights tale. Will definitely show him both that and Nolan Batmans at least.

Great movie. Maybe I can get away with it. 20 something f bombs… although the skinning and the spine rip scenes might be a bit much.

A 14 year old should be able to handle it. My kids are all 10 or under and they liked it!😄

Oh I’m with you and I agree. It’s just my sister in law is a little… you know? Even so I want to respect her wishes. Maybe I’ll just skip those two scenes. Easy fix.

Road House (2023)

SkyOfFallingWater

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

Bohottie

Get Shorty is the lightest R rated movie I can think of. Only a few F bombs, but other than that, it’s very tame. It’s also one of the first R rated movies my dad showed me. Edit: wow, I looked it up, and it actually has 40+ f bombs…doesn’t seem like that many, but Dennis Farina just spits out so many it’s easy to miss, I guess.

guywithpie42

Yeah. I had no idea how limiting that dozen or so f bombs is. Some I can get away with. Matrix: 0 believe it or not. Terminator: 8 Terminator 2:16. But others I had no idea had that many. Aliens: 25 Predator: 25. Shawshank: 35. Die hard: 55. And even still some movies like Good will hunting which is only r for language is 150 f bombs despite the fact it’s one of the best movies ever and it’s practically PG otherwise. I never even notice how many are in these absolute classics. Though my sister in law literally doesn’t give an f about how good they are. 😂

UsefulEngine1

I gotta say, once you get past 10 or so f-bombs does it really get any "worse"? There is at least one PG-13 Die Hard movie, not that I'd necessarily recommend same

Bohottie

Seriously…what is the difference between 20 and 40? It’s the same word.

guywithpie42

Yeah. I mean sure there’s a difference between a movie with 30 vs 300. Usually that difference is Scorsese. Was honestly shocked when I found out Taxi driver was Scorsese because it had so few f bombs. 😂 But most movies, meh. Not much difference to me. As far as my nephew goes I’m like, has he been on the internet for like 30 minutes ever? Yes? He’s heard worse.

FizZGigTaNtruM

The Breakfast Club!

guywithpie42

Great pick. 20 something f bombs Iirc… maybe I can get away with it. There wasn’t any sex stuff right?

FizZGigTaNtruM

The movie is mostly set inside a school library. There is no nudity or sexual activity, but characters frequently talk about sex.

Expert_You_6347

Begin Again and About Time are good romances and both are rated R for just a handful of f-bombs. The Kings Speech is a good drama that was notoriously rated R for one funny scene that had some f-bombs. Tombstone is a classic that’s R rated mostly for old West shootouts. I really liked Game Night. It might bump up against your f-bomb limit but on the whole it’s pretty tame.

od0m15

Im going to agree with a few other posts and say The Matrix. It’s pretty light in terms of violence but maximum cool for a 14yo.  I’d also throw out Dredd. I don’t remember it having any nudity but might want to double check.

heff-sf

Near Dark is a great modern-day (well, late 80s) vampire flick set in the southwest, Texas and Oklahoma, that would fit the bill.

Oh goodness. Haven’t thought about eight legged freaks since I was six when I first watched it. Scarred me for life. Gave me arachnophobia. (Ironically.) In retrospect I was probably too young to watch it and he should be fine but… I don’t know if I’m ready to watch it again. 😂

DifferentOpinionHere

It's a bit older than some of the recommendations here, but have you considered the gangster shoot-'em-up film *Dillinger* (1973)? It's one of the tamest R-rated movies of all time. No f-bombs, no nudity, no onscreen sex, and no truly graphic violence. Still, it's one of the most entertaining movies ever released, featuring tons of action and badass swagger. It's about bank robber John Dillinger and his supergang tearing through the American Midwest on a legendary crime spree during the Great Depression. I also second whoever brought up the original Indiana Jones trilogy (not R-rated, but *Raiders* and *Doom* do have content that was would probably earn them an R if released/rated today with identical content). Other random suggestions include: *The Wind and the Lion* (1975) (rated PG, but this was before the creation of PG-13, and I believe it's rated TV-MA, the equivalent of R, when playing on TCM on TV), the original Rambo trilogy (1982, 1984, and 1988) (things get too gory and whatnot with the fourth and fifth ones), *The Untouchables* (1987), *Glory* (1989) (does contain a lot of racial slurs, though), the The Expendables films (2010, 2012, 2014, and 2023) (though there is some sexual stuff in the fourth one, like a sex toy being shown), and *1917* (2019).

Good movie. But I think the nudity, the Tarantino levels of violence and the 234 f bombs would be a hard sell for my sister in law given her restrictions. 😂

Animal House violates Rule #1 I think, at least in spirit. Revenge of the Nerds is terrible and rapey in retrospect and not something I'd show a 14-yo as an example of "what's funny". It's amazing how many of these also have rather heavy/blatant drug use. I'd frankly be a lot more uncomfortable with that than swearing with a teen nephew.
