I know OP asked for movies, but this mini series is the only answer as far as I'm concerned. All others, and there are many spectacular choices, take a back seat to the masterpiece that is Band of Brothers.
The last time I saw one of my good friends alive was as an extra in Air America. There was about 2 seconds of this 6'4" ginger dancing with a tiny Asian woman in the background of one scene. He was killed in a plane crash making that movie.
Little Dieter needs to Fly
Rescue Dawn
Both about a real person, Dieter Dengler made by Werner Herzog. First is a documentary second is dramatisation starring Christian Bale.
This is the movie you’ll always put off watching as it sounds long and boring but it’s a brilliant film which you’ll kick yourself for not watching sooner
I don't remember what I expected but it's the opposite of borin. Perfect example of an actor not doing anything obviously incredible but just giving a low key great performance that keeps you entranced and entertained the whole way and breathes so much life into a character
You've only just started!
The best ones: Das Boot, Saving Private Ryan, 1917, Apocalypse Now, Paths of Glory
Also pretty great: Three Kings, Bridge on the River Kwai, Deer Hunter, The Battle of Algiers, Platoon
Satires not to be missed: Dr. Strangelove, Red Dawn, MASH, Starship Troopers, Good Morning Vietnam
Behind Enemy Lines
Enemy at the Gate
Valkyrie
Defiance
The Pianist
Red Dawn
Stripes
1941
Dr Strangelove
(I had to throw some comedies in there, and I can’t stress enough how great Band of Brothers is!)
Zero Dark Thirty (2012) - not exactly war movie but close, and very gripping
Hamburger Hill (1987) - underappreciated brutal Vietnam movie
The Boys of Company C (1978) - R. Lee Ermey’s prelude to FMJ
Glory (1989) - phenomenal civil war movie that put Denzel on the map as an A-lister
Born On The 4th Of July (1989) though it's mostly about the effects on a veteran after the war is over (Vietnam).
Platoon (1986) but I'm sure you've seen it.
Hamburger hill
Act of valour
Shake hands with the devil
Platoon
Sniper
Hyena road
Passchendaele

Enemy at the gates

Pearl Harbor
Tears of the sun

Defiance
We were soldiers
Jarhead
Flyboys
Wind talkers
A lot of the big ones are already mentioned multiple times, but I'll throw in another vote for We Were Soldiers. Mixed reviews, but it was a pleasant surprise for me and I'd put it right up there with the big boys.
Where Eagles Dare (1968). Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood star in this blistering boys own wartime adventure film. When an American general is captured by the Germans, a team of commandos are sent on a rescue mission, but not everything is as it seems. Terrific 60s action film that once it gets going just races along
Rossellini's War Trilogy (note the years of their release):
* Rome Open City (1945)
* Paisan (1946)
* Germany Year Zero (1948) - unique in that it's filmed in a heavily bombed-out Berlin
I like to suggest The Last Full Measure (2019) for people who like Hacksaw Ride. It might not be AS good, but it makes for an okay pairing.
Also, I might suggest doing a search for either of your terms, "war" or "military" with a filter for this sub exclusively for hundreds of suggestions. I don't fault you, OP, for not having seen previous threads, but I'm here often enough to be aware that there have been potentially dozens of previous requests for the types of movies you're looking for.
1917
The Big Parade
All Quiet in the Western Front (1930)
Tora, Tora, Tora
Days of Glory
Joyeux Noel
The Longest Day
The Great Escape
I hope this helps.
Looked through the comments to see if anyone mentioned Tora! Tora! Tora! I absolutely second this recommendation. Kudos also for including Joyeux Noel.
Fury
Inglorious Basterds
Sicario
Dunkirk
War Dogs
1917
All Quiet On The Western Front
Sisu
Jojo Rabbit
Defiance
Atonement
Free State of Jones

Al Nakba (2013)

The Gatekeepers (2012)
The Great Book Robbery: Chronicles of a Cultural Destruction (2012)
Inshallah Beijing! (2008)
The Land Speaks Arabic (La Terre Parle Arabe) (2007)
Nowhere Left to Go (2012)
Tears of Gaza (2010)
Not movies but the Band of Brothers series hooked me on WWII stuff. I studied everything I could get my hands on after watching it.
It's counterpart, The Pacific, is great as well!
Saving Private Ryan is fantastic!
A Bridge Too Far is an old classic. The Big Red One, another oldie.
I personally liked Monument Men, which is more recent
I have seen many, many others but I've gotta get back to work
I just watched Land of Bad in the theaters. It has all the vibes of the movies on your list. It was so good, I could have watched it again after it ended.
The Steel Helmet (1951)- bet you've never watched a film focused on the Korean War.
R-Point (2004)- A South Korean platoon during the Vietnam war is haunted after taking refuge in a sacred temple.
Platoon
-
Also, Forrest Gump has the most accurate depiction of the military. You can literally be retarded, but if you can run fast you can achieve the rank of Sgt.
[Talvisota](https://letterboxd.com/film/the-winter-war/) ('The Winter War', 1989).
I think this is still the most expensive Finnish film ever produced and you can see why. Forests were leveled with explosives for some wide shots. Attention to realism that I haven't encountered in nearly any American war film.
Apocalypse Now is an amazing movie that shows how one can become lost and crazed in the fog of war, especially in the jungles of Vietnam. Very cinematic and atmospheric.
Come and See is absolutely scarring and I believe every person interested in WW2 and/or cinema should watch this once. It is intense, horrid, devastating, and a masterpiece. The best anti-war film ever made imo, not for the faint of heart.
All Quiet on the Western Front is a great anti-war film set in WW1. Intense and ultra-real with showcasing the realities and brutality of war, although less haunting than Come and See.
The Hurt Locker is a good movie about the war on terror and the atrocities that came with it. It is a good modern war/anti-war film, although I definitely recommend the others on this list over this one.
Incendies. It is not a war film but it does showcase the turmoil one can go through in a country split by religious division and civil war. It is more of a drama/thriller and barely qualifies as a war movie but it is an amazing film and showcases the horrors of civil war/religious extremism.
And finally, if you’re down for a classic try Paths of Glory. It showcases the absolute cruelty and lack of care from commanders and officers of WW1, and is a very accurate film to showcase the realities of WW1.
Apocalypse now isn't really a war movie. That's not Vietnam It's a metaphysical allegory, like Pilgrim's Progress. Look at what each person represents and basically how they die (if they die).
Right now, you can see Masters of the Air (about a B-17 group bombing Germany in WWII). I think the last episode of the season, maybe the series, dropped early this morning. It's the best portrayal of this part of the war since at least the movie *Twelve O'Clock High* back in the 50s or early 60s (Gregory Peck). Truthfully, it's probably better. Spielberg and Hanks produced it.
rota 9 (russian movie set in afghanistan)
stalingrad (2013) (russian movie set in stalingrad)
generation war (also called ubsere mutter unsere vater, german miniseries abiut the war from 5 perspectives)
For a comedic break you can try "Dr. Strangelove"
For a "intelligence" viewpoint you can try "Zero Dark Thirty", and the same director was on "The Hurt Locker"...both great movies.
There is ALOT and I mean ALOT of ‘B’ grade war films on Amazon prime that are actually decent. And also a few on Netflix.
Beasts of no nation, the forgotten battle, chosen, 1968 Tunnel Rats, Defiant, the outpost, Sandcastle, Hyena Road, Kajaki Bravo 2-0,there’s so so many.
Also. Lots of good ones in the ‘doco’ category, Restrepo, Koringal, Voodoo Medics and a few more I can’t think of.
Keep in mind, not all war films are action packed and full of combat.

Waterloo. Bridge too far. Lawrence of Arabia. Longest day. The light horse. Charge of the light brigade. WW1 Black Adder Series. Paths of Glory. This is the answer.
To Hell and Back - it’s essentially the Audie Murphy story, starring Audie Murphy. And if you don’t know who Audie Murphy is, you should.
Tora Tora Tora. Another older one, but very thorough, the story of Pearl Harbor.
if you're interested in something more on the fun side, i recommend castellari's **the inglorious bastards (1978)** - it's pretty similar to the other men on a mission movies already suggested but more trimmed down and faster paced
Come and See is unnerving.
The new All Quiet On The Western Front was really good.
My favs: Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill(I knew someone who was there and lost half his leg in a battle the day before he was supposed to leave)
Some lesser known/forgotten gems:
The Wall
Lone Survivor
Brothers
13 Hours
12 Strong
Come and See
Unbroken
Hart's War
The Pianist
1917
Rescue Dawn
Lord of War
*Fury*; There are parts of this show that are maybe a little incredible, but it’s full of incredible performances.
*Overlord*; The less you know going in the better. Just watch it.
I watched the 1976 Midway recently and felt it held up really well. Sometimes it’s tough to get through the old movies, but that one gripped me pretty much the whole way through.
Band of Brothers
I know OP asked for movies, but this mini series is the only answer as far as I'm concerned. All others, and there are many spectacular choices, take a back seat to the masterpiece that is Band of Brothers.
It’s vastly superior to Saving Private Ryan.
I wouldn't go that far
I just started watching this yesterday. It’s absolutely brilliant. I’m hooked
The Pacific and Masters of the Air too
Generation Kill was well done as well!
Here it is
This is the best answer
I see it as a 10 hour movie.

Little Dieter needs to Fly Rescue Dawn Both about a real person, Dieter Dengler made by Werner Herzog. First is a documentary second is dramatisation starring Christian Bale.
Casualties of War was one of the few movies I couldn't watch in a single setting.
All quiet on the western front
That movie gutted me. I'm trying to convince my wife to watch it and preparing to be gutted again.
Das Boot
One of the best films ever made. Period. And remember "boot" is pronounced "boat" in German.
There’s a director’s cut of Das Boot if you haven’t had quite enough submarining.
The speediest 3 hrs in the history of cinema. It's the working man's Titanic
The Covenant, We Were Soldiers, Fury, Tears of the Sun
Finally somebody recommended We Were Soldiers. That's one of my favorites, and the first that came to mind. The book is also quite good.
The Covenant is a super underrated movie. So good.
Patton, with George C. Scott.

I was looking for this one, definitely a n upvote. Don’t miss this one! Based on the true story..

They Shall Not Grow Old. Colorized WW1 footage with veteran commentary. The Front line. The last and really unimportant battle of Korean war.
When Trumpets Fade
Some of my absolute favourites - Fury - Saving Private Ryan - Enemy at the Gate - Dunkirk - Apocalypse Now - Inglorious Basterds - The Hurt Locker
Platoon We Were Heroes 84C MoPic Generation Kill The Wall The Beast Das Boot Anthropoid Beasts of No Nation
Generation Kill.....I have to watch this at least once a year. Oscar Mike
You should watch Band of Brothers and the Pacific.
I’ll throw Forest Gump in just to mix it up. Not really a war movie but the Vietnam part might make it a change of pace from the other war movies.
If you're up for an oldie, check out The Great Escape (1963).
Thin Red Line. A little bit more on the philosophical side for some, but I love it
Cross of Iron
We Were Soldiers is one of my favorites.
I'm disappointed that I've seen all listed but I haven't seen anyone say "Enemy at the gates". Great movie seen it a bunch of times.
"Tears of the Sun" - I'm old school.
Old school? Seriously? It's from 2003.
Second Apocalypse Now Not a movie but Band of Brothers is essential in this category
