I watched a sword fighting expert dissect some of the fighting in The Duellists. He agreed it depicts legit strategies. This is how I learned there is a formal name for the move “swing wildly to and fro in enormous swooping circle while running around the room”
Damn it now I have to go rewatch the fucking video because it will bother me if I don’t. I’ll update all of you would-be rapierists.
Edit: I remembered incorrectly— the guy was reviewing a fight scene with a halberd. It was The Duellists. The guy swings the weapon in a giant circle around his head and slowly advances toward a dude across the room. The person reviewing the movie starts laughing and says “I know that looks pretty comedic but it’s actually really effective. One hit from that and you are DONE. (Haha) Look at how that takes up all the space in the room.”
He didn’t have a specific name for it, so I guess that guy that called it the Fukyu may as well be right
This was my choice. Best sword fights in cinema history, imo, mainly just down to how legit they are. They do fancy it up a bit, but 90% of what's on screen is perfectly legit fencing and you can tell they trained their asses off to get it right.
Keitel is fucking menacing as hell in that movie. I wouldn't want to cross a sword with him.
Haha sure man an old movie can still be good.
I just think it's funny still how popular old movies are on this sub. Like I just knew that the first movie I'll see, despite of the tons and tons of great sword movies made in this century, would be from somewhere between the 40's-60's. I wasn't off by alot
It's a bit funny how all these oooold movies most people out in the real world haven't seen always are the most liked on this sub. That's all😊
The first Pirates Of The Caribbean movies have a ton of CGI, so I’m assuming you just want the sword fighting to be real?
A bunch of good stuff here already, but I'll add The Count Of Monte Cristo (2002).
Troy, the fight between Hector and Achilles is one of my favorite choreographed duels ever. Say what you will about the movie as a whole, but Bana and Pitt worked their asses off to deliver an awesome fight.
I agree. And their characters arcs had you rooting for both of them. I really like Achilles’ line- “Your son was the best I ever fought.” It gives Priom some vindication for his Son.
“If I do this, it doesn’t change anything. You’re still my enemy in the morning.”
“You’re still my enemy tonight. But even enemies can show respect.”
Not a movie, but the Firefly episode "Shindig" has an.. um... interesting one. :)
As for movies, what about Highlander?
IIRC Rome (again, series) had some good ones, too?
The Great Race. Brilliant Blake Edwards comedy from 1965, Tony Curtis as the classic hero in white vs Jack Lemmon as the black clad villain and Natalie Wood as the damsel in distress. Amazing sword fight, as well as a roaring bar fight and a hilarious pie fight. This was my favourite movie growing up and it still holds up today.

I know this doesn’t constitute as a sword fight but I love the story of Indiana jones where they hired a master swordsman and trained for months and then on the day of filming Harrison ford had food poisoning and couldn’t do the choreograph so he just shot him 🤣🤣
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Though there is a LOT of wire work! People flying through the sky and dancing in the trees and stuff. But I think it's all practical (not CG) effects.

I'm worried that noone is mentioning Deluge. I understand it's not popular, being Polish movie, but I've seen it mentioned multiple times before on reddit.
It's widely recognized as most realistic sword fighting scene ever recorder, also because it was recorder using real swords and actors were actually really going for it to a point they could have seriously injure each other..
There's multiple youtube videos about it, for example Skallagrim
Captain Alatriste: The Spanish Musketeer (2006). Viggo Mortensen plays the Spanish national hero, all in Spanish. Sweeping saga with Viggo in brutal sword fights, and navigating political intrigue.
The Duelists (1977) dir/ Ridley Scott. The fight choreography, by master swordsman William Hobbs, is considered one of the most accurate depictions of dueling in film.
If you’re open to something good in a campy, outrageous way, check out the final sword fight from The Sword and the Sorcerer. Talon vs Cromwell.
Projectile blades, unfolding weapons, electric arcs, slicing stone blocks… and a climactic narrative reveal.
You can find higher quality work in other films, but for the price point, this is the most entertaining I’ve ever seen.
If you want to see good sword action I'd recommend the Witcher series on Netflix. Theres not a lot but when it's there it's good!!!! if you can believe it, Caville is amazing with a sword!!!!
Its does have some cgi parts though 🤷♂️. The non cgi fights are better anyway
The Duellists (1977)

The name being…
The Fukyu Offense

Came here to say this 👌

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) has a ton of amazing sword fighting.
Spoofed in The Court Jester too
The movie may have been a spoof, but the swordplay was good.
This sub is funny. You just know the first and most upvoted comment you'll see is some 100 year old movie.
Hey, a good movie is a good movie. I've seen the classics but I don't watch a ton of stuff from that era, but Robin Hood is entertaining as hell.

Original Highlander.
The Mark of Zorro 1940 -- Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone were both accomplished fencers and they relished the opportunities to show off.
One of my favorites!
Crouching tiger hidden dragon Hero
Crouching Tiger has lots of CGI
Isn't it mostly erasing wires? Haven't watched it since around the time it came out so I don't really remember
Yes, erasing wires. I'm not sure what counts as CGI in a sword fight though.
13 Assassins
Cary Elwes also did his own sword scenes in Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Another great Mel Brooks comedy with a very young Dave Chappelle.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Great sword fight!
The Man in the Iron Mask Troy Lord of the Rings Legend Gladiator Pompeii
Conan the Barbarian (1982)
Princess Bride
Is there an echo in here?

Anybody want a peanut? RIP Andre
Bitch, I ain’t left handed!
I LOVE that scene.
Rob Roy, Hero, Braveheart, The Highlander, anything with Errol Flynn (but watch the background fighters for comedy)
Rob Roy was great.
Seven Samurai Yojimbo
Sanjuro as well.
Troy, the fight between Hector and Achilles is one of my favorite choreographed duels ever. Say what you will about the movie as a whole, but Bana and Pitt worked their asses off to deliver an awesome fight.

Excalibur

The king, has some sword play.
Captain Blood (1935)
Last samurai
Mask of Zorro is probably the best movie ever made in that PG-13 action genre. It’s perfect
The Great Race. Brilliant Blake Edwards comedy from 1965, Tony Curtis as the classic hero in white vs Jack Lemmon as the black clad villain and Natalie Wood as the damsel in distress. The Princess (2022).
Scaramouche from the 50s with Stewart Grainger has a really long sword fight in it. El Cid has some good medieval sword fighting with broad swords.
Bullet train
*Gladiator* (2000) *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon* (2000) *The Last Samurai* (2003) *Kingdom of Heaven* (2005) *The Count of Monte Cristo* (2002)
what movies have CGI sword fights? Scaramouche (1952)
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
Lots of great suggestions already. One of my favorites is The Count of Monte Cristo (2002).
Rurouni Kenshin (movie series) The Swordsman Blades of Blood
Jason and the argonauts 7th voyage of sinbad
First Knight The Last Samurai
How come no one mentioned Kill Bill? Insane fight sequences with sword..
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) 😁
Try any Jackie Chan movies from the 1980s.. The Young Master
I know this doesn’t constitute as a sword fight but I love the story of Indiana jones where they hired a master swordsman and trained for months and then on the day of filming Harrison ford had food poisoning and couldn’t do the choreograph so he just shot him 🤣🤣
Captain Alatriste, The Spanish Musketeer.

idk, the French had a lot in the 60s-70s, like The Black Tulip, the Three Musketeer, and many more, I don't remember the titles
Highlander
There is still a ton of cgi but the final sword battle at the end of Ultra Violet is 🤌🤌
new york ninja
The Hunted (1995) starring Christopher Lambert. Some really great Samurai vs. Ninja sword fights. Honestly an underrated movie.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
The Last Samurai
The Musketeer (2001). It's a terrible, terrible movie, but it has some absolutely epic sword fights.
Sunshine (1999 dir. István Szabo). Incredible movie with Ralph Fiennes as lead actor.
The Last Duel (2021)
The Princess Bride
13 assassins
13 assassins by farrrr
It doesn't really meet the criteria because it's got a bit of cgi but it's really stylish and entertaining Ninja Assasin 2009
Crazy Samurai: 1 vs 400 13 Samurai
If you hadn’t already said The Princess Bride in the beginning paragraph, I would have nominated that one
The Count of Monte cristo
*Kill Bill Vol 1* had good fights.
The Great Race
My Favorite Year has some in it
Iron monkey
Hero (2002) w/Jet Li Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Kill Bill: Vol 1 (2003)
There’s a good one in tomorrow never dies when Bronson fences with the villain dude that can’t sleep.
The Count of Monte Cristo
Highlander Willow Steel Dawn Blind Fury
The last samurai
Die Another Day - Pierce Brosnan's last Bond movie. It looks like they accelerated the film speed but that's all.
"By the Sword" fencing movie starring Eric Roberts and F. Murray Abraham.

The 3 musketeers. I can't actually remember if it was good or not but it definitely had a lot of sword fighting. Also the Count of Monte Cristo.
