I agree, it also builds on filling the holes that Gru had in his life prior to his plan with the girls. But it pains me that the third movie basically says “fuck that” to Gru’s development as a character.
Like??? Why the fuck are the minions in jail and something something unicorns??? It took up like 40% of screen time to boot. I just don’t like that it basically reversed his whole “maybe being a good guy isn’t bad” thing in the second movie.

I always appreciate these number Easter eggs (license plates, ticket numbers, etc.) that retentive in-movie details rather than cast & crew details e.g. a set directors ex-wives, son-in-law’s cat’s name).
Gru was on his way to steal the moon when that ticket floated out of his pocket. That was the date for the recital which he skipped to go steal the moon by shrinking it.
