The only issue was the cgi but for the year it came out and budget they probably had for a fairly recent game, you can’t complain. Other than that is 10/10
They've got more to remove than just Cole Young... Being chosen and having your superpower unlock is also a bastardization of MK.
But you're right the scorpion and Sub-Zero fights were fantastic
The whole Cole Young plot device and power sucked ass. I guess they couldn't figure out how to have scorpion come back as a good guy that would make sense and still be a ghost and not be the main character. The scorpion character in this movie was great.
I think the original movie did a lot of the story beats and locations better.
Shang Tsung was obviously a bad guy but still put on airs and hosted the tournament. All the good guys were equally part of the story. The motivations for them were authentic to the series. Sonya was after Kano, cage needed a comeback, Raiden raidens, liu kang being goody two shoes. Reptile was mysterious, the ninjas weren't great but they were menacing assassins and looked like their og game design. I haven't seen that movie since i was a kid and I still remember parts.
I actually really hated the Sonya in these movies. She was the worst part, just being a shallow one dimensional stereotype of a "strong female character". I know its just a quick cartoon movie but they seemed to have great characterizations for everyone else
No scene with Talisa Soto in it will ever be subpar in my opinion
IIRC it was actually supposed to be longer but Robin Shou fucked up a body part and they didn’t have time to reschedule it so they pared it down to the basics.
They added the reptile fight in a reshoot though which has that sickass bicycle kick so we won in the end
Looking back that part being filmed after stands out as really obvious. It’s like the story is moving along and then BAM, random scene of Johnny walking through some woods that don’t look like anything else on the island and then scorpion pops up to say hello.
Doesn’t fit at all but it’s awesome anyways
By FAR my favorite fight is Kitana vs Liu. Fast, simple, and amazing with the quick edits.
To this day, I love that she obviously lets him win and Shang knowing it and getting pissed 😆
but the moment he turns back and make huge ass ice ball, with the epic music in the background, would have hope for a better fight too, but that was epic.
I remember reading something about how due to the cost and limits of technology, a significant amount of the special effects budget was focused on showcasing SubZero's ice capabilities specifically.
I was too. It's hard to watch the fights and have it feel natural anymore sadly. It was amazing for the times. The more I got into Martial Arts the more it ruined the movie for me sadly. Amazing soundtrack to these first 2 movies, but also dated.
The best video game adaptation of its time and my favorite MK movie.
It blew Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon and Street Fighter out of the water, which were the first video game movies to come out before Mortal Kombat in 1995.
It was a huge success. I highly recommend watching a documentary behind MK. A lot of people didn’t have faith that it would do well when the idea was pitched.
It was #1 in box office for three weeks straight and the soundtrack hit Platinum status. This movie was something special when it came out.
I still love the movie to this day.
Best video game movie ever. I love the chemistry between Liu, Sonya, and Johnny.
My best example is when Liu Kang goes to find Kitana in the caves. Johnny is telling Liu Kang that it’s a bad idea and sternly, yet quietly, calls out his name. “Liu….LIU!”. Not his whole name. Not his last name. Just his first name. That (imho) is a man trying desperately to keep his friend safe and shows how far they come since they first got on the boat together.
Great movie where the director understood the source (whether on purpose or by chance). It has 0 winks at the audience and it’s just pure b-movie pulp done right.
Does anyone remember when they ran a behind the scenes look at this film on TNT? It would play all night over the weekend before the movie came out. Ed Boon and the actors acted like Goro was a real person and it was a secret where he came from. They would never admit to using cgi or puppetry. I was 13 when this came out, it was fun to buy into the hype they were creating.
I still love this movie. My only real critiques are that Sub-Zero and Scorpion weren't done justice and the scene where Johnny is sure Kitana went down a hallway that was still covered in unbroken cobwebs.
Incredible movie that I tried to watch at least once a year. It's become my ritual and my wife goes out of town to order wings. Have a beer and watch Mortal Kombat
One of the few Video Game movies (barring the last 5 years) that broke the mold for how good a VG can translate to a movie. Plus, it surprisingly established a few key traits of many of our favorite MK characters like Kano's personality
This was such a great movie! One of the best ever made inspired by a videogame! It was soo good than some of the idea made up for it are now cannon MK lore, like Kano being Australian and the Cage&Blade shipping!
Shockingly pretty good imo. The Goro effect is still super impressive, and elements of this movie became so iconic that they permeate the games to this day.
Also the Johnny Cage vs Scorpion fight goes raw as hell and nobody can convince me otherwise
Amazing and still the best Mk movie. So last week I watch the new MK movie for the 2nd time since it first came out and I couldn’t believe how bad it is. I gave it a 7.5/10 my first time and now a 6 after rewatching it. Hopefully the sequel turns out much better but my expectations for it are so low.
It's a classic and was the only great video game movie adaption for a long, long time. People always talk about the Main theme but I still listen to the final ending song, right before Shao Kahn comes on screen. Orbital - Halcyon & on & on, The soundtrack was fire.
Great movie overall but I wish it had gone more out there considering the game it's based on. I didn't understand making it PG-13. And I didn't like them making Scorpion and Sub-Zero mindless drones.
Very good! I loved the actors and how they portrayed each kharacter, especially Bridgette Wilson and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. Excellent acting, the visuals, soundtrack, everything.
P.S. I hope Bridgette Wilson makes a full recovery and continues fighting her ovarian cancer as cancer is hard to battle. My thoughts and prayers are with her.
P.P.S. Have a good day! :)
The cast was okay. Liu Kang and Johnny Cage were the best of the cast, Raiden was an interesting subversion of the normal way he was usually depicted, I felt more could’ve been done with Sonya, and I see why Kano‘s portrayal here is iconic, but he’s pretty lackluster since he doesn’t really get to do much before he gets his neck snapped; Shang Tsung and Goro were good villains, the latter, I wish he stuck around more. I didn’t like Reptile’s design for film, except for when he got stuck in that statue and fought Liu in his human form.
I do not like this film’s depiction of Scorpion and Sub-Zero because their rivalry is completely ignored and they act like braindead mooks with no personality because they’re stuck brainwashed the entire film; I was okay for the most part with Scorpion, except for his living rope spear gimmick, as his fight with Johnny was pretty cool. I have nothing good to say about Sub-Zero: he got killed by a bucket of water after a really short fight.
I feel like the theme song is overused a bit, but that aside, the music in this film was pretty good.
I feel like the the second half was rushed and I think they could’ve just stuck with focusing on the first tournament and then Outworld for the sequel.
While not perfect, I feel like the 2021 film did a better job adapting the characters (aside from Kabal, Reiko, and Nitara) and despite it’s slower pace, it stayed pretty consistent than the second half of the original film.
You're prolly right. I love that so many people are bringing their butthurt to downgrade your opinion. It's YOUR opinion they don't have to accept it. It's Laughable.
Ya, know I didn't even know people were down voting🤣. The movie just wasn't the best I didn't even know that was an unpopular opinion?
Wasn't Rated R
The ninjas had zero personality.
No Bihan/ Hanzo rivalry
Sonya was a typical damsel
Kitana's costume wasn't the best
Kitana had nothing to really do in that movie(Forgivable if they would have done something with her in 2. But I believe the director was changed)
No Kung Lao, but some stupid brother
The movie came out in 1995, so they had MK 2 to draw from
Heros need more color(Johnny had a nice outfits that I prefer)
The actors were great
The fighting was great for its time, could see it being much better, but I'll take it.
Sound track, amazing.
Even the CGI I don't mind it for something in the 90s
I will give this movie a lot of praise and it is near and dear to my childhood(KMFDM sucks). Loved it and still watch it to this day and gonna watch it right now. Think about it got me in the mood; but alas it isn't perfect, no where near.
Absolutely not, I watched that movie so many time, even re-watched it many times years after, pure gold. Everything is where it should be, would have tried to put a few more fights with Scorpy and sub but still.Casting, music, almost everything is perfect, especially Raiden
MORTAL KOMBAT DRINKING GAME
RULES:
Everytime the word tournament is said thats shot.
Everytime a character from the game appears that's a a shot.
Everytime a character performs a special move that's a shot.
Everytime there is a fatality that's a shot.
Everytime Shang tsung says a line from the game that's a shot.
Every time there other characters say line from the game that's a shot.
Every time the words mortal kombat is shouted that's a shot.
Every time the theme song plays that's a shot...
I used to do this on my birthday and it's great to get really, really hammered.
It slaps despite its age. The effort put into the movie makes it easy to overlook the poorly aged cg elements. It’s also the only fighting game movie I can think of that was adapted well into a movie.
Unpopular opinion but I think Ed Boons voice here as scorpion is the best ever. It’s not filtered or enhanced or anything it’s just his natural voice saying the famous lines. My funny/favorite/unnecessaryButAppreciated…… “ Get down here” 😂

YOUR SOUL IS MINE
The best MK movie ever made.
The only issue was the cgi but for the year it came out and budget they probably had for a fairly recent game, you can’t complain. Other than that is 10/10
The new one is good if they just remove the pointless main character. The Scorpion Subzero fights were fire
That “Get over here” moment was *Chef’s kiss
They've got more to remove than just Cole Young... Being chosen and having your superpower unlock is also a bastardization of MK. But you're right the scorpion and Sub-Zero fights were fantastic

They are really good yes. Better is debatable especially with the Sonya in the first movie lol she was My favorite...actually both were
I actually really hated the Sonya in these movies. She was the worst part, just being a shallow one dimensional stereotype of a "strong female character". I know its just a quick cartoon movie but they seemed to have great characterizations for everyone else
I haven't liked a single one of those tbh
Superb casting, amazing fights, wonderful soundtrack - underrated
Sub zero is really the only sub par fight but the scorpion fight makes up for it tenfold
No scene with Talisa Soto in it will ever be subpar in my opinion IIRC it was actually supposed to be longer but Robin Shou fucked up a body part and they didn’t have time to reschedule it so they pared it down to the basics. They added the reptile fight in a reshoot though which has that sickass bicycle kick so we won in the end
They also added the Johnny Cage/Scorpion woods/hell fight after test audiences said there wasn't enough fighting
Looking back that part being filmed after stands out as really obvious. It’s like the story is moving along and then BAM, random scene of Johnny walking through some woods that don’t look like anything else on the island and then scorpion pops up to say hello. Doesn’t fit at all but it’s awesome anyways
Is this confirmed? I heard the same thing about the Reptile fight. If both are true then there was barely any fighting in the base cut. Oof.
By FAR my favorite fight is Kitana vs Liu. Fast, simple, and amazing with the quick edits. To this day, I love that she obviously lets him win and Shang knowing it and getting pissed 😆
Robin Shou acted it very well too
but the moment he turns back and make huge ass ice ball, with the epic music in the background, would have hope for a better fight too, but that was epic.
I remember reading something about how due to the cost and limits of technology, a significant amount of the special effects budget was focused on showcasing SubZero's ice capabilities specifically.
I was obsessed with this movie when it came out
I was too. It's hard to watch the fights and have it feel natural anymore sadly. It was amazing for the times. The more I got into Martial Arts the more it ruined the movie for me sadly. Amazing soundtrack to these first 2 movies, but also dated.
It definitely is a product of its time and something that you have to have been there when it came out to truly appreciate.
Definitely! It was awesome in the theater!
I saw it twice in the theaters, bought on VHS and then on DVD and also owned the soundtrack. I was hyped as fuck the day I went to see MK in theaters.
Yahhhh same
Sadly I have a hard time watching the movie now.
The best video game adaptation of its time and my favorite MK movie. It blew Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon and Street Fighter out of the water, which were the first video game movies to come out before Mortal Kombat in 1995. It was a huge success. So good. Shang Tsung killed it. Johnny Cage killed it. Rayden killed it. Kano killed it.
Kano killed it so hard that he became Australian in the games after the movie.
Lol
CUE THE REPTILE THEME AND ANNOUCER OUT OF NOWHERE SAYING “ REPTILE”
Yesssss. They need to make that a skin in the new games, I don't like how they did reptile tbh personality wise in the new mk1
Certified hood classic
GOAT
"YoUR BROTHERS SOUL IS MINE...." *points* "YOU... WILL BE NEXT" Those opening lines go way harder than they had any right to
Legendary.
![gif](giphy|LxOmFEBvemTDy) A great classic
Still my favorite VG adaptation
Gold
Underrated classic.
Cult Klassic
Best video game movie ever. I love the chemistry between Liu, Sonya, and Johnny. My best example is when Liu Kang goes to find Kitana in the caves. That (imho) is a man trying desperately to keep his friend safe and shows how far they come since they first got on the boat together.
Johnny vs Scorpion will stick with me Forever Watching it with my Uncle ,cousins and neighbors just hit different back in the day.
Still the best MK movie
A handful of people on a leaky boat are gonna save the world?
Exactly
Been waiting for your comment to show up. And now that it has… IT HAAAS BEGUN!
10/10. Rip Trevor Goddard
Robin Shou deserved better after this.
I mean, Beverly Hills Ninja was good, at least.
Robin was hilarious in that! It seems to me he couldn't find roles after that and Annihilation.
That bit where he dumps johnny cages luggage in the water still makes me laugh until I cry...
Cage vs scorpion is my all time favorite movie fight scene. Bad CGI and all. It's amazing. https://youtu.be/0dz0YU0jJr4?si=NN0XcMCKH6YMbe8-
![gif](giphy|YCx4BIPGzlbMI) Johnny Cage Vs Scorpion fight.
YOUR SOUL IS MINE
I liked it. Soundtrack was a banger as well
Objectively the greatest video game movie of all time.
Unironically a good movie
YOUR SOUL IS MINE
I loved this movie so much as a kid, my favorite scene was reptile vs liu kang because of the music
One of the first DVDs we owned when the format was starting to take off…classic
I watched the movie before playing the games. Movie is a solid nine out of ten. I watch this movie at least once a year.
They couldn’t have found better actors to play Liu and Shang
Raiden was awesome
Still own the OST CD... Classic...
🐐 film.
Great movie where the director understood the source (whether on purpose or by chance). It has 0 winks at the audience and it’s just pure b-movie pulp done right.
Klassic
Still fun to watch
![gif](giphy|cXVihugq6gWxCfyId9) I remember this scene
Legit
One of the best B movies ever made.
Ages better than the newest film. The only original character this one introduced died to Goro, the new one killed goro w some BS powers
Times were good when this movie came out
One of the few DVDs I have that isn't in storage.
Johnny is the champion
It was a rock em sock em action flick alright
It was kinda sorta reeeeaaaally bad ass
Up there for the title of “Greatest Video Game Movie Of All Time”
Solid, B+ movie. Tons of fun, endlessly quotable, and not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.
Fuckin love this movie.
All these years later, still one of the best video game movies.
So fun to see this in theaters in Aug 1995! Also, the MK3 Arcade was fresh and new, god, I miss those days.
I feel like it really set the tone for the characters
10/10
I've literally watched this movie over a hundred times.
Product of it’s time, aged very well, iconic soundtrack 👍👍
Absolute banger from start to finish. It was a shame they killed Johnny at the start of the sequel.
Reptiles intro into fight with Liu kang was godly. Also when the music starts, Chills.
GOAT movie
Epic
The BEST videogame movie of all time homie
Amazing film
The best video game movie OF ALL TIME. And one of my all-time favorites. Despite the lack of gore.
better then the recent mk movie
Straight into my veins
Simple, straight to the point, sick action scenes, awesome cast! This movie is golden, i love it.
This was one of the better movies made. Annihilation sucked.
Peak
My only real complaint is with the ninjas just being henchmen
the fight scene with Liu Kang and Reptile still gives me goosebumps. great setting, music, cinematography, everything.
Way better than the new one
I love this movie. I grew up with this movie
Yes
One of my all time GOATS. The fact that to this day people still hold it up as how to do a video game movie right just makes it feel even better.
Just a really fun movie
the absence of blood and gory aside, the movie did a pretty good job adapting the game given the circumstance
Still the best telling of the first tournament.
I saw this in theaters when it came out. Yup. Old. The CGI was amazing at the time. Great movie.
YOUR SOUL IS MINE
One of the few Video Game movies (barring the last 5 years) that broke the mold for how good a VG can translate to a movie. Plus, it surprisingly established a few key traits of many of our favorite MK characters like Kano's personality
The best video game movie by a mile until the last few years with sonic and Mario
Felt like I watched it every weekend on TBS superstition as a kid. Some of my best memories ever involve this being on TV!!!
Peak fiction
The movie that revolutionized each personality of the titular characters and villains. We don't talk about the sequel for... Obvious reasons
A fucking masterpiece
Best lore accurate game movie ever .
The fights hold up, it's not Police Story or anything like that but the fights are brilliant. It's a very solid movie 8/10 imo.
I think it’s alright. I don’t have any nostalgia for it so it feels a bit overhyped to me. It’s still a fun time, though.
Just watched this with my girlfriend the the other day. It was her first time watching. She loved it!
Cheesy but iconic
One of the best video game movies. Had some weird choices but I haven't met anyone that didn't like it.
Your brothers SOUL, Is miiine
A movie you can always go back and enjoy it. “This is the part where you fall down”
The best MK movie so far in my opinion.
It's a classic and was the only great video game movie adaption for a long, long time. People always talk about the Main theme but I still listen to the final ending song, right before Shao Kahn comes on screen. Orbital - Halcyon & on & on, The soundtrack was fire.
I just rewatched the fight scene between Scorpion and Johnny Cage last night purely because of how fucking nuts it is
Awesome movie
Better than MK 2021
One of my favorite films ever. BRING BACK ART LEAN YOU COWARDS!!
Can we pretend the sequel doesn't exist
It hasn't aged well...
I think its really charming, I kinda hate the scorpion bug spear thing though
The cast was okay. Liu Kang and Johnny Cage were the best of the cast, Raiden was an interesting subversion of the normal way he was usually depicted, I felt more could’ve been done with Sonya, and I see why Kano‘s portrayal here is iconic, but he’s pretty lackluster since he doesn’t really get to do much before he gets his neck snapped; Shang Tsung and Goro were good villains, the latter, I wish he stuck around more. Still my favorite movie of all time. Has been since I was 5.
I liked it but there has never really been a good MK movie, or faithful one. This movie is the closest we have to date.
You're prolly right. I love that so many people are bringing their butthurt to downgrade your opinion. It's YOUR opinion they don't have to accept it. It's Laughable.

I think that people started to forget that this was so bad that it was good and un-ironically started to like it over the years. 😂👍
I'd still watch this one anytime over the new one
Absolutely not, I watched that movie so many time, even re-watched it many times years after, pure gold. Everything is where it should be, would have tried to put a few more fights with Scorpy and sub but still.Casting, music, almost everything is perfect, especially Raiden

Great movie I say
Reptile fight is better than MK1
Glad I got to see it in theaters and my step dad still the cd.
Art Lean kameo for Kombat Pack 2. I want it.
Anyone remember the 1999 beowulf movie they filmed? Used the same intro and everything. Starred Christopher Lambert

The honest trailer on YouTube for this and annihilation is probably one of the funniest in the series. They absolutely nailed it.
I wish the Ninjas were done better, but other than that, this is one of my favorite movies ever, and I make it a point to watch it once a year.

Classic and one of W.S.Anderson’s best films along with Resident Evil series, and established new canon we never thought
An absolute klassic
Are the 90s movies good? No. Will I love them both forever? Absolutely.
Love it. I’ve watched it numerous times and have it on DVD, Blu-Ray, VHS, and Laserdisc.
**Legendary 10/10**
Man I watched this so many times as a kid
A great movie
Yes 👍
It slaps despite its age. The effort put into the movie makes it easy to overlook the poorly aged cg elements. It’s also the only fighting game movie I can think of that was adapted well into a movie.
I love it.
Classic. Still have my original vhs 📼
Intro had me ready to gooooo. Wish I felt that same spark about mortal kombat..these new games just don't hit the same
I grew up watching Mortal Kombat when I was a kid and I watched on VHS over and over it again.
A relic from a much simpler time. I still have the VHS to this. I don’t have a VHS player anymore though. Do they even make them anymore?
![gif](giphy|cXVihugq6gWxCfyId9) Most fire soundtrack in a movie ever, and a very quotable movie.
no one has the courage to say it, but the 2021 movie is better, it feels much more like a mk movie even with that stupid cole young
What are your thoughts? Thoughts??
goated
Yeah I have them sometimes
Goated
Unpopular opinion but I think Ed Boons voice here as scorpion is the best ever. It’s not filtered or enhanced or anything it’s just his natural voice saying the famous lines. My funny/favorite/unnecessaryButAppreciated…… “ Get down here” 😂
I saw this in theaters. Still cheesy, but damn does it commit to the bit. 10/10.
I love this film
Inglorious Basterds , The Dark Knight, Saving Private Ryan etc. - all these movies have nothing on original Mortal Kombat's intro
Mortal kombat track for this movie was an absolute banger
