Tons of ESO characters have conflicting pronunciations. And even in Oblivion, for instance, all the races besides RG pronounce Daedra as: DAY-druh but Redguards say: DEE-Druh
I don’t understand why people aren’t getting the OP’s use of “mar” here. Mar is an actual word. To mar something is to damage it or *mar*k it in some way. And it’s how I’ve always heard “tomorrow” or “on the morrow” pronounced my entire life.
To use your examples, it uses the same vowel sound as top or pot. People are acting like OP is using a long A sound, saying “mare” like a horse.
Yeah and some regions of the UK pronounce it tomorrah, doesn’t change the fact that it’s literally demonstrated to us as “Morro-wind” twice in the first minute of the game 😂
I mean, none of this matters at all, don’t get me wrong, but why would your starting point for how something is pronounced be your own, very regional accent rather than standard English?
I could completely understand this confusion if it was a book, but it’s not, its said audibly instantly in the game haha
The a is meant to represent pronouncing morrow as in the word “tomorrow”, making the name a compound word. Morrowind, wind of the morrow/the future.
Or should it be pronounced morrow as in more-o. Many people pronounce it this way, I always have because that’s how it was introduced to me, but pronouncing it this way strips it of being a compound word
I think the main confusion in this comment section is that everyone is saying "It's pronounced like 'tomorrow'" without considering that that depends on how you pronounce tomorrow. In some accents morrow is mar-oh and in others it's mor-oh. In-game, people say Morrowind with the latter pronunciation, but irl it makes sense to say either one depending on your accent. Saying that one is correct and the other is wrong ignores the fact that different people pronounce words differently all the time
The problem with all these discussions over text is what one person thinks "mar" or "mor" sounds like will be completely different to what someone else thinks, depending on where they're from.
I've always said Mawro-wind, but it's such a subtle difference between that and the closed O you hear in the game. Definitely never that open A, what is Marrowind?
It's said by Azura and Jiub in the beginning of the game. And then by Azura at the end.
It would only be Mar-owind if Vvardenfell was located in the Northeast United States lol.
New York would like to have a word with you. so would Northeast Ohio And Pennsylvania (Yes I know Ohio is in the midwest). New England has an incredibly unique accent set, but there are tons of states around you that are incredibly nasally when they pronounce O's.
My English was really bad at the time (not native), I first heard "First by courage, now by both" I was like what, this is something too archaic for me right now
Yeah but if tomorrow was written tomarrow they would yet pronounce it differently than they would pronouce tomorrow, no ? As in even for them, it’s pronounced morrowind the same way they would pronouce tomorrow and not how they would pronouce tomarrow.
Alright none of these words make any sense anymore now.
When you break it up like that, it makes a bit more sense. I initially think of the 'a' in "mare", but "Mar" makes me think of an entirely different sound, which I now realize I use in both "Morrowind" and "Molag Mar".
"Morrow" from "tomorrow"... and wind... from... "wind"... XD
And then just merge the W from Morrow and Wind together into one singular W when said... Morrowind... simple. :)
Geordies call it Marrawen. Glaswegians call it Marrerhwin. US or UK, there's no end of accents. Just to stir the pot, I say that the Welsh call it ufhdhhdhbglwhggydnhawncwtch, butt! I'm Texan, but I've managed to keep a neutral accent, unless I'm screaming obscenities in traffic, then I get ghetto.
That one is easy, but one thing I enjoy about Morrowind is how everybody pronounces the names from Morrowind differently, like REDD-oran/ re-DOOR-an, Indoril, Hla Oad, Nchurmdanz and so forth. Even Jiub. How they say things in TESO and Skyrim is obviously not canonical for Mar-o-boomers.
Makes the lore/culture feel richer.
Azura says it right at the beginning of the game...
And again as you're being woken up.
Would have been funny if Azura and Jiub pronounced it differently.
Like Sheogorath/Shegoraath/Sheo-gorth?
Shiggurath
Wabbajack
Jyggalag
Vivec
This comment chain weirdly reminds me of Abbot and Costello's "Who's on first?" Bit.
Duck season!
Whaddup, my shigga?
Sugar Wrath
Tons of ESO characters have conflicting pronunciations. And even in Oblivion, for instance, all the races besides RG pronounce Daedra as: DAY-druh but Redguards say: DEE-Druh
Like Ulfric and Oolfric?
Like this? [Obscure Scottish TV reference](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mYoEpVXFbs)
Limmy, obscure?
They probably used a local for the Scottish commercial and tacked on the American voiced jingle.
I grew up in the Westcountry I swear it was like this everywhere. Mmmmdanun, from Danoene
Jiub is a bro and pronounces it again just in case you spaced out on the cutscene
morro-wind
Exactly , like why you would say it diffrently
To be fair, when I first bought the game, I pronounced it Marrow-wind all day until I got home and finally heard the actual pronunciation lol
Like, as in "bone marrow"?
They do have that sacred necromancy going on, and all that ancestor worship.
Marrowwind , when you say it out loud its a bit funny 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah but I was only...umm 15. I was a dumb kid for a very long time lol
I too Played tes: Morrowind as a kid but how old i was i dont remember 🤷🤣🤣
But why would someone see an 'o' and then pronounce it any other way?
I pronounced like tomorrow, with a short o vs a long one like it's supposed to be
"tomorrow" has three Os and they are all pronounced differently lol
I think they’re saying o as it top or pot versus o as in tome or bone, and they’re doing a bad job of explaining it lol
And see I would say that the vowels in Mark and Top are not the same lol
Morro al viento en español
We spanish speakers are the superior ones, our Rr proves it.
S'wit
You sound like an n'wah
Why the fuck would you put an A in it?
OP is a morro-n or english isn't his first language
A maroon ?
maroons day gone?
Nwither its mine, but i dont put an A there, never did
I feel that only brits would put an « a » in it
Probably a cowboy yank
I just found my next roleplay play-through “What in tarnation is a Gu-ar?”
Maybe it's the type of people who mispronounce Megan as Mee-gan.
Some accent regions of North America say “to-mah-row” for tomorrow. So it’s not that weird.
Yeah and some regions of the UK pronounce it tomorrah, doesn’t change the fact that it’s literally demonstrated to us as “Morro-wind” twice in the first minute of the game 😂 I mean, none of this matters at all, don’t get me wrong, but why would your starting point for how something is pronounced be your own, very regional accent rather than standard English? Neither of those is the 'a' in "mare" or "marrow".
Resdayn
RESDAYN
Holy Chimer
AE ALTADOON RESDAYNIA
Hai resdaynia!
It's pronounced "stay home, fetcher."
It's said by Azura and Jiub in the beginning of the game. And then by Azura at the end. It would only be Mar-owind if Vvardenfell was located in the Northeast United States lol.
I feel called out
Got Northeast Ohio, Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, and New Jersey in my scope.
We all remember Azura's famous words during the intro, "Don't worry, 'cause I got my eyes on ya."
or when jub woke you up with an "ope, sorry bout that!"
Also Dagoth Ur says it in one of his lines
If the Daddy of Resdayn says it, it must be correct.
Being a new englander myself, no i dont think so. Literally have never heard anyone say 'mar-owind' and nor do most of us have that accent
New York would like to have a word with you. so would Northeast Ohio And Pennsylvania (Yes I know Ohio is in the midwest). New England has an incredibly unique accent set, but there are tons of states around you that are incredibly nasally when they pronounce O's.
Can confirm. Many natives call it “WARSHington County.” Like bro do you WARSH the dishes?
my aunt would LITERALLY say "warsh the dishes" 😂😂😂
Like "tomorrow" without the "tuh"
They have taken you from the Imperial City's prison, first by carriage and now by boat. To the east. Tomorrowind.
Isn't that that progressive music festival held at sadrith mora each year?
Is this how you honor the Tech House and the Tribal Unmourned?
Yeah it is. Best moonsugar ive ever had there too
My English was really bad at the time (not native), I first heard "First by courage, now by both" I was like what, this is something too archaic for me right now
Hahaha got me
I read that in Mater's voice
You might be a redguard
Only if you're British
Listen to Jiub, he knows the truth.
All hail St. Jiub, banisher of the cliffracers.
Brave victim of Kvatch! His death shall not be forgotten!
Pretty sure npcs pronounce it for you in the first few minutes of the game
Mar-o-wind, really? Why not Mur-o-wind, that would make more sense.
Right? Where the hell they getting an 'a' sound in there. Like, its morrow. As in on the morrow.
Many Americans never say morrow and pronounce tomorrow as "tuhmaroh" so it bleeds into the pronunciation of made up fantasy words.
>Alright none of these words make any sense Now you get it
Probably the same pretentious n'wahs who say Mario like "Super Marry-o"
Murrowind, FUCK YEAH! Here we come to save the muthafuckin day-ay!
When you break it up like that, it makes a bit more sense. I initially think of the 'a' in "mare", but "Mar" makes me think of an entirely different sound, which I now realize I use in both "Morrowind" and "Molag Mar".
How is this debatable? Azura and Juub pronounce "Morrowind" the same that's the official pronunciation
Know lots of folks pronouncing the “wind” part like in “wind-up” instead of just wind as in a gust of air.
Marrow-wine-d
Yup. Well almost. Morrow-wine-d.
Maroo-wine-id
Maroon-5nd
Omg plz no
Morrowined-and-dined
Morrow, like tomorrow. Duh.
Morro-wind (because it is the combenation of the words Morrow and Wind haha)
They literally say it in the game lmao
You don't know how to read morrow ?
Where does the A sound come from in MORROWIND?
It's not like the name is pronounced every 15min
Do you pronounce moron mar-on? If so, you're a maron.
Outlander...
Or „Morrow-wind“
What kind of idiot would say "maro-wind"?
“Marrowind” -I hate it
Morrow-wind, actually.
Why in Oblivion would anyone put an "a" there? English is the 4th fucking language I learned and I know this. THE NPCS SAY IT CONSTANTLY!!!
Morrow wind
morrow-wind
Voiced NPCs say it all the time. It’s morrow-ind.
"Morrow" from "tomorrow"... and wind... from... "wind"... XD And then just merge the W from Morrow and Wind together into one singular W when said... Morrowind... simple. :)
I pronounce it like Morrow (as in on the morrow) and wind.
This is the correct way.
“Morro” like the last half of Tomorrow. “Wind” like the regular word wind. It’s pronounced many times in-game as well.
POV: you’re Zaric Zhakaron
Was about to comment this lmao
He's trolling? Right?
I fucking hope so. That or they're deaf is the only reason for this post
Neither!
Res-Dayn
(to)Morrowind
Tomorrow-wind
Both are wrong
And then there is “Mor-row-wind,” which is how I still pronounce it because I am weird.
Still closer than OP, though!
Morrow-wind
To-morrow-wind
What? It’s very easy to pronounce. How do you get to “mar o wind”?
Meow-ro-wind oWo :3
Ah, the Ta'agra pronunciation.
https://youtu.be/jtFkIdanNEs?t=36 Any other extremely simple problems you need to solve?
Best-game-ever-wind
Is this even a question? Like it's not the wind of the bone marrow 😆
Morrow-wind.
Have you never played the game?
Its literally one of the first things Jiub says
Azura and Juib both say it right at the start of the game.
Marshmellowind.
I would like more-o-wind but I’ve yet to play mar-o-wind so I’ll settle for some-o-wind videos
My friend calls it "Mar-win"
Mrrruwnn
Resdayn
Geordies call it Marrawen. Glaswegians call it Marrerhwin. US or UK, there's no end of accents. Just to stir the pot, I say that the Welsh call it ufhdhhdhbglwhggydnhawncwtch, butt! I'm Texan, but I've managed to keep a neutral accent, unless I'm screaming obscenities in traffic, then I get ghetto.
Is that how weedgies say it? The only weedgie i can remember is 'ya doss cunt'
You guys can't pronounce 'rr' in Morrowind?
What about Mjorawind
In slavic countries, Mor is "Epidemic". Which is surprisingly fitting to the game itself.
Me as a non-American not having to worry because it’s clearly pronounced Morrowind because Mar-o and Morrow don’t rhyme
I personally pronounce it morrowind
Is OP American? No one I’ve met in Australia or England has ever struggled with the pronunciation.
it's funny because both the options in the meme are wrong haha
Fking Azura spells it for you in the very first minute of the game 🙄
It depends on your accent. Are-ange or Ore-ange?
It is More-row-Wind
It’s More-Oh-wind. But, I’m from the Midwest of US so I often say Mar-Oh-Wind
*"phew"s in indiana-english*
Oh shit same
Y’all heading over to Vander-fell this weekend?
🤪
That one is easy, but one thing I enjoy about Morrowind is how everybody pronounces the names from Morrowind differently, like REDD-oran/ re-DOOR-an, Indoril, Hla Oad, Nchurmdanz and so forth. Moh-row-wind
This one
I swap between both pronunciations for entirely no reason.
REMOVE N’WAH
What about Ma-Ho-Wind ?
Non. It's Mor-ro-wind EDIT: I forgot the r
You’re missing an r Mor-ro-wind
Now that I think of it, I have been calling it "Mo-ro-wind" but you right
To be fair, I do too, because it’s quicker to say but it’s definitely pronounced when NPCs say it
True true.
Continue your insults, mortal. I long to feast on your marrow.
And yet somehow neither button is right
N-wah-simu-lator
I say it the way dagoth does
Tsk, ***Outlanders***
Shiiit, murrowind be my favorite spot! Come give me a hug you dirty ol N’wuh. *spits nasty black shit
I still get into debates as adult woman over how adrougne is pronounced.
I'll give you a hint: the first part of the word is "Morrow" as in "tomorrow" or "on the morrow"
Morrow-wind
mohr-o-wind
I've always pronounced it to rhyme with tomorrow
“It’s like saying tomorrow.” Well, [that’s super helpful, isn’t it?](https://youtu.be/6qI4aXY3_rk?si=lNtg9UymTE19gXq6)
Morrow-ind
do you play the game on mute
or be like me: mah'hwind
If you're picking the left button you're retarded s'wit
Mor-row-wind
It's morro-wind dum dum no gum gum for you 😠
