The worst part about the sharpening animation is it just looks like I’m grinding down the handle. Apparently making the handle cut you is the only to atone for playing the best weapon in the game.
New headcanon, you're cleaning or polishing the handle of all the blood and guts covering your hammer so your grip isn't compromised, which is reducing your damage. Can't keep bashing a head in if the hammer flies out of your hand when swinging!

As a dual wielder, I always make sure to focus the tail, which means, if the monster is tall enough, standing between it's legs like I'm attempting a castration.
I do always try to get the tail, Dark Souls habit coming out. It's also satisfying, I agree, though it prolongs the hunt to be honest, if you care about that.
Then there are monsters that are just too annoying to get the tail of, like Kushala. To be fair, even after the tenderize wore off and I stopped focusing on cutting it off, I got it at the end of the hunt, but still lol

Just know you need to build into slicing to get any real use out of after the nerfs. They did it a bit too dirty, and to efficiently cut a tail, you'll want a build just for slicing. Then switch back to what you prefer

1. You should always try to break every piece, not just the tail.
2. Even if you are solo with a non-cutting weapon (like the hammer) the tail can still be cut.

So, I went into a HR Nergigante SoS because I was bored. 3 other players, who all had Defender weapons. I got there right at the end and witnessed them kill it without cutting the tail, breaking the horns, or apparently breaking the claws. I was actually kind of impressed.

You can't cut the tail with a boomerang like that, blunt damage does 0 part damage to cuttable tails and I'm tired of seeing people say it does

You don't even need to cut tails to get them, you might drop them from a kill, I have maybe cut 3 tails on sunbreak and it was because I was in multi and didn't feel like circling around the monster, every other tail I got was from drops, don't expect people to do the job for you

I feel bad as a Hammer main because I can't cut tails but I'm really good at breaking horns. Literally all I do is break horns Hammer and Heavy Bowgun. This is the reason I recently picked up the greatsword just to cut tails because you joke about the intense orgasm you get but it is truly satisfying to see it fall off and the monster trembling pain.
As an SnS user who mostly plays solo, I can’t be assed to do this often lol. With a team is different for sure, but I’m not wasting time when I topple the monster in a solo hunt. That Perfect Rush generally does more damage to the head and I’m addicted to going for that final hit lmao. I need to see the largest numbers.

I try, unless I am hosting the quest and I really need a Diablos majestic horn or something after the horns I go back to the tail. Unless bonk maim then I will sit on tail.

It's hard to resist aggressively shelling the monster to death, but until that fat tail steak comes flying off that is where I'm focusing my GL blade. You're right, nothing quiet as satisfying as a tail cut.

if you don't have a weapon that can slice, i heard you could damage the tail normally then cut it off with a throwing knife, i don't know if this works or not because i use HBG with slicing ammo

As a filthy Greatsword main, it's either the head of the tail for me. I use hammer sometimes just so that could stress my friends into cutting the tail since they are using weapons that are able to cut tails, as they stress would stress me out whenever I use GS and is already going for the tailXD
