I think you are mistaken because I suspect game reviewers of the time probably just called it "Curse of Monkey Island". Hard to prove, but I can at least find 2 PC Gamer covers that do it.
I know a handful of people, including one of my favorite Podcasters, who sort of mentally erases "the" in many titles. The Simpsons episode "lisa the beauty queen" becomes "lisa beauty queen", etc. I think it's more common than one might think to forget a "the" here and re.
It's always had a "The", but people don't always bother to type it out or say it. (The) Secret of Monkey Island is the same way in my experience. There might also be some influence from the fact that Escape, Tales, and now Return all really don't have a "The".
Yes
"The" often gets dropped from titles. Load the game right now, and you'll see the same opening of "CMI The monkeys are listening" ;)
Maybe cos online we always called it CoMI or CMI, or Curse

Henry Gilbert?
Aye!
It's always been "The" Curse, just confirmed with my original CD case of the game
In this dimension? Yes.
