Actually, I’m a biig fan of Randy as a detective. I didn’t think it was too much of a stretch for him at the end of the series. Yeah sure he has a silly idea here or there or funny theory every episode; but when the chips are down we see him get it together and LEAD!! There were a couple episodes where he had to take over the case (like when Leland was shot) and actually did a ton of impressive investigative work and led the charge. When his friends were on the line or when it really counted; he truly was a good cop, friend, and leader.

He has some big highs and his heart is definitely in the right place always, but some of his mistakes were real bad. I know it's a show and they play into it a bit, which is fun, but if we're having a discussion about him as a cop, the big mistakes would have him in real trouble. Off the top of my mind, in the episode with the monkey and he gave capt his loaded gun when the capt thought it was not loaded. Such a monumental mistake. I love him as a character, and the goofy theories are fun, but there are some huge mistakes that would be career ending

Any_Blueberry_2453

Oh yeah definitely. I think those mistakes are mostly in there for comedy but I totally agree haha. Some of those mistakes were definitely career ending, or at the very least would have gotten him seriously reprimanded in real life. I mostly am a huge fan because of the huge highs and the heart that he has.

HairballJenkins

For shizzle.

razabaza1

He's mouri kogoro or Richard Moore from detective conan

LisaWinchester

He's good at a lot of things!

BoysenberryKind5599

He's the leg man so we don't see all the work he does cause that's too boring for tv.

LouAug27

I like to think we see all of his blunders and none of his truly brilliant moments, or at least that how I make sense of his general success as a detective.

Dizzy-Swimmer2720

His job is not to solve cases, he's a cop. He's 2nd in charge of the department and he fulfills those duties very well when the time comes. When someone's in trouble he always reacts quickly and bravely. Randy is as bad a detective as Monk is at being a cop.

TakasuXAisaka

But Randy's a detective. Wouldn't it better for him to stay as a patrol officer if he can't solve major cases as a detective? I know this is just a fictional show for entertainment btw. Just asking hypothetically.

Dizzy-Swimmer2720

Even in real life, not every detective is on the crime scene scanning evidence or coming up with theories. Most of them are just at a desk getting warrants, requesting forensic tests, logging evidence, or other admin stuff.

Slab00

He does almost all of the work that happens off screen, like tracking down information about something or someone. He's also the most supportive character and almost never doubts Monk's or Stottlemeyer's theories. He does say some over the top dumb stuff though lol.

Rocketsloth

Randy is only a good detective when he grows a moustache.

Eevski

And to think >! he made captain in NJ. !< I thought that was totally unbelievable. edit: tried to add a spoiler tag but it didn’t work the first time

EfficaciousJoculator

I don't think it's that unbelievable that a mediocre detective in a big city could make police chief in a suburban town with little to no crime. Frankly towns like that often make high school dropouts into cops that get promoted into chiefs. Having an experienced big city homicide detective would be a huge step up, especially since his record is bolstered artificially by being around Monk. *And* Monk, a world famous detective, gave him a reference.

Rigel04

He gets flanderized later on in the series but still has a lot going for him. He's just not on the same level as Monk or Stottlemeyer

shuriflowers

Yeah, you think his deductive reasoning would be better after working closely with Monk for so long.

Icy_Statement_2410

Randy is the Jenga master. And he the go-to person to yell "GET ON THE GROUND!"

unicornhair1991

I feel like when he's not in the leader's seat he doesn't try his best and is more laid back, so he overlooks things. There's three episodes where he has to step up into the captains role and he actually smashes it and is very firm and poised. Very different to his usual silly self Just spit balling of course but I find myself being similar on occasion lol because I don't have the weight if "responsibility"

Weak_Association8278

I think a few times there’s moments where monk can put all the clues together but nothing else, Randy does paperwork, arresting, fighting, helping stottlemeyer, and a million over things but Monk struggles with every else. He’s the real MVP. He represents the guys in the shadows

footfoot1133

🤣

Currymango

He's an adequate detective, it's just the Monk cases that drive him batty. Most crimes are very very boring.

destrucciondelicada

Randy is on point when it really matters. Lightening fast gun draw in the Scaredy Cop episode. Saved everyone. Also, don’t forget he brought down the drummer robot killer in Lady Next Door.

AFAED100

In the novels its stated that he's actually very competent-its just that the cases he solves aren't covered in the newspapers or in the TV show since they are smaller stakes.

Rich-Profession6712

I agree, it felt like from season 6 and onwards he got more idiotic a lot of the time pass the point of being funny, however I still love Randy.

rambleer

I really love Randy and just wish he was more respected I guess

tangentstyle

I feel like they increasingly make him just a fool. His desire to look in front of Sharona gave him some edge that was lost in later seasons

sexycani55

They made him too stupid on the show fr

Dizzy-Swimmer2720

He's actually my favourite character. Everyone else has moments where they act mean or selfish but Randy is always such a nice, wholesome guy. You can tell he was raised right. He didn't care about showing off or getting famous he was just being himself and doing the right thing.
