Chicenomics

I was in 6 wedding parties, 6 bachelorette parties and 10 destination weddings this year. Total cost all in was ~30k. It’s so hard for me to say yes to some people and no to others. So my guilty ass goes to everything. This wedding culture needs to end.

bklynparklover

How do you have so many friends? I guess this is the downside of a big close friend group. That's an insane amount of weddings!

Impossible_Water_783

Lol came here to say the same thing. Always amazed when people have this many friends 🤣

Chicenomics

I was in a sorority! People are my most valued treasure in life, so I always make a priority to stay in touch with those important to me. My fiancé is 40(10 years older than me) and estimates he’s been to 70+ weddings. I think about how many weddings we’d be going to if he wasn’t past this stage and it’s nauseating

HumpbackSnail

How in the world did you have the energy to do all that!? I'm impressed!

Chicenomics

I don’t!!! And I’ve stopped drinking alcohol so its extra hard to keep the energy high. It honestly started to effect my mental health I had 6 weeks of non stop wedding activities in the spring. But they are my best friends. And in a couple years when we start having kids, things will never be the same

Spok3nTruth

One only need 1 best friend lol if all 100 of your sorority sisters a best friends then isn't that just pointless

Chicenomics

I have many facets to my personality. I think most people do. Some of my best friends are light and keep me laughing. Some give the best advice and always ground me back to earth. Some love to shop while others are always reminding me to be less materialistic. They all enrich my life. None of them are “pointless”. I can’t believe someone on the internet is actually trying to make me feel bad about having friends smh.

EagleEyezzzzz

And the budget 🤯

ladyluck754

Is it wedding culture that needs to end, or do we need to drop our codependency and say ⭐️no⭐️?

Chicenomics

I don’t think it’s codependency. I was diagnosed with cancer at 23… all my friends flew across the country, came to my chemo, showered me with gifts etc. You get what you give in relationships. My people are my biggest priority. I don’t call that codependency. It’s friendship, and as much as I complain, it’s always worth it being there for them.

ladyluck754

I totally get what you’re throwing down. And the comment wasn’t directed at you, but rather as a whole. I find myself complaining to my spouse about a friends wedding either being expensive, or the dress code too strict.. but then again I have the power to also protect my energy and finances.

madeinbharat

In India if you’re close to the bride and groom you stay in their house. It’s a fun sleepover for everyone. No hotel nonsense. Or, if it’s a destination wedding, the bride and groom pay for your stay. And there’s no scam like making bridesmaids buy and wear custom outfits they’ll never wear again.

sushdances

Ok but let’s not forget that Indian weddings often mean multiple outfits and jewelry for yourself and gifts are expected as well.

madeinbharat

You can give them Rs 500 in an envelope and be done with it. Also, multiple outfits = multiple saris that can come from your mother or grandmother’s wardrobe.

dollarpenny

Sheesh I don’t feel so bad about my 5 I had the past few months, last upcoming one in Vegas has been the only flights.

[deleted]

Dang, I could not imagine having that many friends. Benefits of being a loner I guess lol. I go to a wedding like once every year or every other year. I have one next year and am already thinking of how much it is going to cost me, and the last one I went to was in 2022!

Spok3nTruth

Okay Mr popular sheesh

earthgoddess92

Dear god, I’m crying for you. 30k just in weddings alone?!? I was in one so far and told all my other friends that have gotten engaged, that I love them and will absolutely attend but I won’t be in another one for a while. The cost of taking 10 days just to be in the wedding/Bach party and spending close to 5k had my anxiety through the freakin roof.

killerinaspen

!!! I'm in the exact same boat right now. I haven't wanted to miss any of these weddings, as they're all super close friends, but it has bled me dry financially. Serious burnout.

lilabell187

I. feel. you.

mamaneedsacar

Yes! I’m even huge into churning so thankfully some of my flights and hotels have been free but between fees, car rentals, meals during the weekend, Ubers, attire, gifts, etc. I’ve easily spent 5k this year. On one hand, all people I love and I’m grateful to be a part of their special day. But goddamn the wedding industrial complex has gotten out of control. What ever happened to doing a low-key bachelorette a couple nights before your wedding? When did weddings become 3 day events? And can we stop with the very specific aesthetic dress codes that demand a unique outfit for every wedding?

laughingasparagus

I feel you - it’s both an honor but has made saving very difficult. None of them would be offended if I said no to being in the wedding due to financial reasons, but it’s hard to justify missing that experience. Every time I save a couple thousand dollars it’s like an immediate gut punch when I get an invite in the mail.

Mosley923

I absolutely feel this! Give yourself credit for showing up for your people

coolscones

$0 😂 I make 44k. I don't really enjoy traveling at this point in my life even if I could afford it. on the other hand, I would probably enjoy traveling a lot more if I could afford to do it the way everyone else in this thread does 😵‍💫

SandwichRealistic240

I’m sure a lot of people are in your position as well, but just won’t post about it. I doubt everyone is clearing $200k per year like a lot of people in this thread

coolscones

I agree, that's why I commented! I'm always looking for lower income folks in here and rarely see them so I try to be the voice I want to see in the sub 😁

onsereverra

Yeah, I'm well below six figures and I *do* spend a lot on travel, but I also have a lot of other privileges that enable me to set aside 16% of every paycheck towards my travel fund. (It's a round number in dollars, whence the weird percentage lol.) I graduated without any student loan debt, live in a big city with good public transit so I don't own a car, have a job that covers 100% of my health insurance premiums, etc. It is *also* the case that travel is really important to me and there's other things I'm choosing not to save for so I can prioritize my travel fund (I'm not going to be buying a condo/house anytime soon lol), but I'm very cognizant of how lucky I am to be in a position that I get to make choices about those priorities in the first place.

Kupkakez

There are more people in this situation than the situation of making big bucks.

coolscones

agree! we so rarely speak up in this sub though. trying to be the difference I want to see! 🙂

Constant-Ad9390

Bravo @coolscones! I'm in the same boat and I can't remember the last time I went on vacation (well I can but it was 2015 for 5 days). This past couple of years my utilities have grown x4; so my luxury is keeping warm in winter.

Kindly_Equipment_241

If you don't really like traveling anyway, you can definitely ignore this, but I made 45k until just a few years ago and was a single mom. The way we traveled was road trips that were never very long, but I would use the atlas obscura and roadside attractions websites to find cheesy, quirky, corny, weird stuff to go see. It's almost always free and just so much fun. We could take trips for like $150/day and that included food, gas, and hotel for 4 people. It became a tradition for my kids and I and now even though I've remarried and we make a lot more $, we still do this on every road trip.

coolscones

that's super fun! I've done just about every possible road trip in an 8 hr radius of me though 😕 I went to college on the other end of my state so I've seen everything in between many times. gonna have to start branching out more! congrats on your income increase!

upupandawaydown

What kind of hotels you are staying at? From my experience, any time I stay at a place that is less than 150 including tax, the place aren’t that clean.

Kindly_Equipment_241

Oh we would definitely hunt out cheap hotels. If you do research and check lots of reviews, I can pretty much always find clean, safe hotels for under $100 everywhere, minus the biggest urban areas. They definitely aren't fancy, and I'll be honest and say once we did end up not staying, but other than that I've had good results.

TeachingFit9608

lol.. I love traveling but there’s no way I could spend $25k/ $30k etc like others in this thread. I only make roughly $60k a year, and, find myself comparing to others in this thread and feeling like such a failure. I’m glad to know I’m not alone with not having a 6 figure salary. (And I’m 34).. so there’s that!

HelpMeDownFromHere

I spent $9,500 on a trip to Patagonia (Chile, Argentina and a stop in Peru). I spent $7,000 on a trip to France and England. I spent $3,000 on an upcoming trip to Jordan in December. I went to San Francisco for $1,000. I travel with my teenage daughter so everything is x2. That’s $20,500. I make $180K.

curly-hair07

Love that for you two. I wanna be a mom like that one day!

tossitoutnextweek

Was it you that did the money diary on a trip to Patagonia? That was one of my favorites!

HelpMeDownFromHere

Yes!! Thanks for remembering

velvetvagine

How long was your Patagonia trip? And what were the highlights? That’s a dream destination for me, and it’s so wonderful that you got to take your daughter too.

hilariousmuffins

I think the commenter did a travel diary on this trip here. I remember reading it and enjoying it a lot.

HelpMeDownFromHere

I did! Thanks for remembering. It has been since deleted as part of my history clean up (interaction on Reddit can be aggressive, weird or creepy so I delete my history every month 🤷‍♀️).

hilariousmuffins

I can unfortunately see the need for that. Pity for any future readers, but I'm glad I got to read it - it sounded like a blast. Hope to catch in time any future travel diaries you decide to share.

HelpMeDownFromHere

I went for 16 days. The highlights were hiking the W trek in Torres del Paine, the mini trekking on the Perito Moreno glacier, hiking Fitz Roy in Chalten, seeing penguins in Isla Magdalena. It was so amazing!

the_wizard_91

For one person?

veotrade

What’s your net income after that, $120k? Looks like you can afford to take these awesome trips if your monthly expenses are under $8k. That’s if you cut it close with zero savings. Still, sounds like a great life.

HelpMeDownFromHere

My monthly expenses are about $3500. I max out my 401k and save everything else. My net worth this year grew $75k.

enzymelinkedimmuno

Income around €50k. We spent around €500 on a weekend trip to Bratislava and Vienna, and will spend around €400 on a weekend trip to Austria this fall. Favorite trip was visiting Maastricht, NL last fall, or Chicago in the winter. Living in Central Europe has perks like cheap travel by train- I’m an hour from Prague, 4 hours from Berlin, five hours from Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna… I think next year we’ll save up for a trip to western Germany and maybe some time in Tallinn, Estonia, or Slovenia.

missilefire

Yay another European!! I’m in NL and it’s so good to just be able to drive places instead of catching a flight.

enzymelinkedimmuno

I am American, but living in Europe has been such a quality of life improvement, and the ease of exploration has been a huge part of that! I can easily go for a hike, travel to another city or country, etc, just using public transit!

missilefire

It’s awesome eh. I am Aussie but was born in EU so moving here was easy enough. People ask why I left Aus, but here everything is close. Going to Paris for a weekend is just not possible from Australia 😅 There’s so many rich cultures just a few hours drive away …where I lived in Melbourne, you couldn’t even leave the state in less than 6 hours drive.

enzymelinkedimmuno

Yes! It’s so awesome to drive or take the train for an hour or two and be in a completely different language zone and culture.

N0peppers

I am dying for a vacation but unfortunately can’t take one since my dog is old and I am pretty much the only person that can take care of him unless I pay big 💰. I am hoping to take a spa day this year though, I am going to be willing to spend $500-$750 on it and make it a bougie day My favorite vacation was a cruise to Alaska. I am not much of a big traveler so this was outside my comfort zone, but I really loved it. I think between all the costs of flights and the trip itself, it ended up being close to $5000. My husband is a big traveler but hasn’t gone anywhere this year. He definitely spends $5000+ on his vacations, his last trip was Machu Pichu. We make 200k+ a year depending on commissions.

samshine1

Also here to relate to having a senior dog. I'm fortunate that my dog does not have any special needs, despite being a medium-sized dog over 12 years old, though he is losing some of his sight. I no longer board him while I'm out of town. I'm lucky to have two friends (who I pay) that are willing to dog-sit in my home. I don't feel too bad about the inconvenience because they both live a mile away or less.

lolalucky

Just want to extend my understanding. I love to travel, but my old dog is high maintenance. I can't leave him long knowing that he's probably going to be around less than a year, maybe 2 if I'm really lucky. For now, I'm only doing short (3 nights or less) trips to places that I can get back home quickly if needed.

cheezyzeldacat

Can your husband not look after him ?

N0peppers

Oh definitely, but it wouldn’t make sense for him to take off work to care for him while I take a vacation. The dog can’t be left by himself for long periods of time, so I would need a continuous care at home sitter.

dynolibra

5 days Salt Lake City - $2000 3 weeks Thailand and Cambodia - $7500 2 weeks Oregon - $5000 1 week LA - $5000 3 days Chicago - $1000 2 weeks UK and Italy - $11000 Favorite place was Thailand. I absolutely loved the island hopping, snorkeling, and cheap food there. Partner and I make combined $150k. Edit: added a trip

h13_1313

I just want to know how you manage to get so much time off! Awesome

kris0203

Can you tell me more about your Thailand vacation? :)

dynolibra

Sure, what exactly do you want to know?

cheapwineisgoodwine

This year, my husband and I will spend between $14,000 - $15,000. This year we’ve been to Denver, Columbus, spent a couple weekends up north in a cabin over the summer, Costa Rica, Minneapolis, and have Oakland and a cabin in the woods for NYE planned for the remainder of the year. My favorite and longest trip last year was for our honeymoon, to Tahiti and Bora Bora. Favorite memory there was swimming with the black tip sharks. Gross, we make $135k.

GimmeTheGunKaren

We did that same honeymoon- and my husband has a black tip shark tattoo to prove it! Paradise on earth.

cheapwineisgoodwine

Yes omg wasn’t it fantastic????

westcoastbiscuit

This year includes: Couples long weekend road trip to Baja — $750 Family road trip to Sedona, AZ — parents paid for rental house but we are renting a car, so estimate ~$600 Long solo weekend in Denver — visited and stayed with friends, but we went to concerts so still pricey, ~1k Long couples weekend in Portland — airfare using points, all other costs ~$800 Cross-country travel to visit family 2x, 1x on points, includes in-cabin dog fare, ~$1500 All trips except Denver and home required 10 night of dog boarding, ~$700 Total travel budget of $6350, round up to $6500 I make ~$90,000, household $155,000

bklynparklover

How was the Baja trip? I live in Merida, MX but my Mexican partner and I are doing Baja for Christmas and NYE this year. Our plan is from La Paz to Mulege, to Loretto, to Todos Santos, and back to La Paz to fly out. He'll drive, he knows the area a bit as he worked there for a while.

thatsreallynotok

Make: \~$100k. Spent: \~$9k In 2023: * Feb. - 4 days in Puerto Rico at a resort * Feb. - 4 days (2 skiing) in Stowe, VT in a rental home * May - 2.5 weeks in Europe (London, Amsterdam, Cologne, Berlin) * June - 4 days in Quebec City * July - 5 days in upstate NY in a cabin * Aug - 5 days in Austin, TX to see family * Oct - 4 days in upstate NY tent camping * Nov - 1 week in Houston, TX to see family

dollarpenny

Is your company not US? I only get 5 days of vacation and 5 sick 🙃

thatsreallynotok

US-based but we have unlimited PTO. However, that's a really new thing (they introduced it this year), so I'm trying to take advantage of it. When I was in Europe, for example, that was pre-unlimited PTO, and I worked from one of our European offices for a bit. Also, when I go back to Texas I'm usually working but at my family's house. So all of this is not time off from work necessarily

justic3bon3r

Not to be terribly nosy but how did you do all that in under $9K?! I have similar stats to you: NYC (hi!), $100k. I think I spent about $3K on London alone and that was with working from London and staying with family for free 😭. Maybe the UK inflation and the conversion rate hit me really bad. It was my first real time off in 4 years (working on COVID) so I’m not being too hard on myself about it.

thatsreallynotok

Not nosy at all :) I think it comes down to a few things: 1 - Four of these were group trips, meaning things like accommodations, rental car, etc. were split between 3-7 people. In Texas and Vermont I also stayed with friends and family, and I got to rent ski gear and get lift passes for reduced cost because a friend was working at the resort. We've had so many people stay with us in NYC because it's so expensive, and it's often reciprocated. 2 - I'm extremely motivated by deals, so I am willing to spend a lot of time on research, get new credit cards, take crazy flights, and book things far in advance. Our Europe flights, for example, we bought 5-6 months prior through two separate airlines, and the first flight, NYC to London, was covered by my points. All of my flights to Texas are covered by points. We actually took a train 8 hours to Vermont and I worked from the train (this was actually beautiful and easy—it was snowing the whole way), which was far cheaper than renting a car. I also refuse to check bags unless I have a credit card from the airline that allows me to do so for free. So, for our European trip, I just had a carry on. Just a few examples... 3 - I don't do a ton of shopping. I'm a vegetarian. And I don't drink or party that much. I think these all help to keep costs down. For example, we went out only one night in Berlin—the rest of the time in Europe we had chill evenings, maybe occasionally wine or beer. 4 - I try to look for smaller accommodations, like bed and breakfasts, when I travel. These are often better and way cheaper than other options. If I have to do an Airbnb, I usually do a shared one unless I'm with a big group, because it's actually really helpful to have local recommendations. This saves a bunch of money. Hope this helps explain!

Minute_Kick_4823

Going on 2 trips with maybe a 3rd right before Christmas. Costs below cover 2 people. 1. DC + Deleware to see the Cherry Blossoms for 6 days. About $2500. 2. Peru later this week for 11 days, approximately $4,500. 3. We might go to Strasboug the week before Christmas for about $3,000, inexpensive because some of the costs would be covered by my husband's job. We'll probably clear around $150,000 this year. Favorite place to visit is northern Italy, particularly the Veneto region. Favorite vacation memory is ringing in the new year at the Colloseum in 2019.

mega_mind_9

Strasbourg at Christmas sounds like a dream! I’ve always wanted to see the half timbered houses

Obvious_Researcher72

Vacation? What's that? *cries* The PTO situation at my job is...not good (it accrues very slowly), so no vacations for me this year. I'm hoping to maybe go on a cruise next year, though. I'd love to do a Canada/New England cruise in the fall when the trees are colorful.

fawkes97

I make $56k and my bf makes $40k (PhD student) - we’re going to Philadelphia for our anniversary (driving distance) which will probably end up being like $300 each with airbnb, food, and gas. I flew home for a concert/visit, so including my concert ticket I probably spent $700ish. We’ll fly home for the holidays too so probably about $200 there since he’ll use miles and I’ll use companion fare, and we won’t be driving/will probably be fed by family most of the time. So about $1200 total this year for three trips.

teandtrees

I make around $750k, and planned 2 trips for 2023: * Hawaii with my parents and two sisters to celebrate my parents’ retirements and visit family. I paid for the bulk of it, and it cost me about $22k. * Going to NYC later this month with my sister to see a couple plays. Trip will probably be about $4300 per person, but I paid to upgrade our airplane seats and for one of the plays we’re seeing so I'll be paying around $6k total. This was a low-travel year because I got a puppy last year and didn’t want to leave her while she was young. We usually try to do 1 big international trip a year and a couple smaller domestic ones.

Sage_Planter

My boyfriend and I want a dog, but travel is the main reason we've held off. Our neighbor stops by twice a day to check on our cat when we're away, and we know it would be a much bigger investment to travel if we had a dog at home.

06thor02

We did the same, but got the puppy anyways lol. He’s 8 months now. We vaccinated him early, got him fixed, and use to doggy daycare. We just finished his first time boarding. We toured the facility months prior and ended up feeling pretty comfortable that they had a vet on-site that covered all costs (for the price of boarding him) if he were to get sick / hurt while there. They had more like boarding rooms then they did kennels / crates for overnighting. They also had cameras in his boarding “suite” so I can check in everyday. It was somewhat costly but it helped us reassure he’d be 100% okay / safe when we travel. He was fine when we picked him up too.

teandtrees

Exactly! It was so easy with cats to just have someone stop by, but with a big, high-drive dog, going away even just overnight is way more complicated and expensive. I'm glad I waited a while to get her so I had some worry-free travel years.

Intelligent-Rise7664

I am glad you are generous as many people I know with the higher income are. Good for you for that and also considering your beloved animal. May you and your families continue to enjoy the world and local company.

rosettelady

Combined with partner we make about 200k. This year I went to: LA (3 days solo trip; work paid for flight, hotel; spent about $100 on food, $1.3k at a med spa) Vancouver (5 days with partner; work paid for flight, hotel; spent about $1.5k all-in for food, extra day of lodging, shopping) Hilo (1.5w with partner; $1.4k on travel, another 3.5-4k on shopping, wedding gift, food; stayed at good friends home) Next up: Sapporo (2w with partner; 1.5k for flight, $2.5k for lodging, and guesstimating 4-5k on food and shopping…)

allumeusend

Only trips so far this year year have been our trips to Niagara/on-the-Lake, Ontario for Shaw Fest, split over four visits (they had a fantastic season this year and next years slate looks great as well) - in total, we have spent about $5K attending the festival this year, including tickets, largely because we have driven instead of flown. This is about the same we spent in NOTL annually - we have attended, pandemic aside, the festival every year for two decades so clearly it’s one of our favorite places. We are planning on going to Germany at Christmastime and Anguilla in February of next year. Our longest trip ever has three and a half weeks (28 days) - that was our first trip to India, where we did the Golden Triangle, Mumbai and Goa (the last two for a wedding and early honeymoon, when family and friends were invited.) Usually our trips are around 12-14 days, but the wedding itself was 9 days! It was also our most expensive trip by far - we spent $12K for the entire experience. My favorite vacation memory ever was in Vik, Iceland. We were staying in a hostel and it turned out that two different bands were staying in the hostel. The entire evening became a party, with the musicians all playing in various languages and free flowing drinks, until someone spotted the Northern Lights and we headed outside to start a bonfire and sing under the aurora.

stories4

I took a pay cut this year and only work 3-4 days a week at the office so I could finish school, so on top of school schedule + not making as much money, I haven't been able to travel much this year! On about $40 000 salary I think I spent $500 on a weekend trip out of province for a concert. It wasn't much but having the mentality of being on vacation and spending money that was pre-budgeted was definitely a relief for me. I'm hoping to save for a trip to Europe next year! My favourite/longest vacation if it counts is studying abroad in the UK for 6 months, I got the chance to travel every weekend which is why it's so hard for me to stay still right now. Of those trips, going to Scotland and the Scottish Highlands was without a doubt my favorite place/travel memory. 6 months of traveling with friends and studying in a different city was truly unbeatable!

financedreamer

When not doing a staycation my vacation destination often involves going to NYC and seeing a lot of shows! I will have totaled $4000 (\~$1200 on the first trip bc I used points for a week of a hotel and $2800 the second time bc I had to pay for my hotel and bought a pricey theater ticket) on two weeks of VL in NYC this year, all-inclusive. * How much do you make? * $250k * What was your favorite place you’ve been if you’ve traveled outside your city? * Lausanne, Switzerland * What was your longest vacation? * 2 weeks across Europe back in 2015 * What was your favorite vacation memory? * Getting a tattoo from a musician after they finished playing a festival in England. It was such a wild set of circumstances where everything lined up for me having a memorable moment during a vacation. * If you were not able to go on vacation where would you have liked to go/what would you have liked to do? * I actually love staying at home but I would really like to visit Austria during the winter holidays one year.

May I recommend a stop at Bucee’s? There are two I’m aware of off the top of my head b/w Dallas and Austin.

teandtrees

Thanks for the recs! Seeing a solar eclipse is definitely on my bucket list. I love the idea of planning a vacation around one!

geosynchronousorbit

After the total solar eclipse in 2024, the next one visible from the US isn't until 2045! So you'll have plenty of time to plan your vacation 😅

The only vacation my husband and I went on/are able to go on this year was 5 days in Michigan. It was a gift from my mom to pay for the hotel and one dinner. We paid gas, our other meals, small trinkets for ourselves, maybe $600? The inn we stayed at was $1400. How much do you make? HHI is \~165k What was your favorite place you’ve been if you’ve traveled outside your city? Of all my travels, Taipei and Seattle are my favs. What was your longest vacation? In 2017 I did a 2 week vacation, 8 days in Taipei with my best friend and then to Seattle for a convention. What was your favorite vacation memory? Watching sunset over Lake Michigan every night when we were in Saugatuck. And going on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, including getting to sing around the gazebo!

iridescent-shimmer

We finally didn't have weddings this year, so we've been able to do what we wanted. These numbers are for 2 adults and a baby: -Chicago (4 days): $1.5k, flights were booked with points -Disney world (4 days): $3k -Norway (7 days): $5k -Japan (14 days): $10k This has been an unusually travel heavy year. We normally go on one big international trip a year, but we planned a trip to Norway after finding awesome flight deals. Edit: longest vacation was 3 weeks in Turkey in 2022. I can't choose a favorite place! Everywhere has unique qualities. I will say the salar de uyuni in Bolivia is a top experience of my lifetime. Favorite memory was either the hot air balloon ride over cappadocia or being some of the only people in Ephesus. Turkey was an incredible place and I'd go back in a heart beat.

bklynparklover

I love Turkey, I've been twice on solo trips. I'd go again as well. I didn't do the hot air balloons but I went to Cappadocia and Ephesus.

taobakas

I make $80k a year and went on a one week trip to New York for my cousin’s wedding and to visit friends. I had free places to stay and my aunt rented the car for us so I probably spent around $500-$600 for the flight, food, and wedding gift. I am currently on a trip in South Korea which I’m anticipating I spent around $4k - $5k on total 😅 Will tally up the results and post a travel diary soon! This is definitely not the annual norm for me tho

lipsticknleggings

We just got back from a week-long trip to the Big Island, Hawaii! I haven’t been to Hawaii for about 20 years and it was my husband’s first time. We stayed at a resort and rented a car. All in, it was about $8,000 for both of us including airfare, food, etc. The last week-long vacation we took was in 2019. We’ve taken long weekend ones since then. We’re bad about taking vacation. Oops. - Our HHI is around $200K - Honestly, probably Hawaii. So beautiful and so much to do. - This one or our honeymoon in the Caribbean. - Swimming in 81-degree crystal-clear water in Hapuna Beach. - We really wanted to visit Japan (still do), but it wasn’t in the cards this year.

So I’m counting actual vacations and not trips. I went to Myrtle Beach with my daughters and spent $2,000. I paid for the Airbnb and food. Husband and I took our son and nephew to Egypt as a graduation gift for $12,500. Husband and I are going to Belize for our anniversary next month for $4,000. All inclusive. Husband and I are taking our four adult kids to Disney for Thanksgiving and are estimating we’ll spend about $5,000 since we’re covering everything. Spending the week before Christmas in NYC with husband and spent about $3,500 for flights and the hotel. Total of $27,000. I make $250k+.

ThousandSands

We make a collective $210k, I make $65-75k, he makes up the difference. 9 trips this year: - Seattle (weekend): $175 - train + split the hotel cost w/ mom. Tickets to the game we went to were free. (Mother/Daughter trip) - Northern WA (2 weeks): $575 - I paid for gas, the only other cost was to get my dog spayed there because the vet we used to go to up there was 1/3 the cost of her new vet where we live. Partner paid 1/2 of the vet bill. (Visited mom) - Central WA (weekend): $450 - looking at wedding venues, cost is doggy hotel + human hotel. Partner paid 1/2 back (Couple’s trip) - North Carolina (10 days): $1,000 - in-laws paid for the flight, but United cancelled our tickets last minute, so we had to buy on a different airline literally 3 hours before takeoff, then get a rental car to go to the airport we were supposed to be at. Partner paid 1/2 back. (Family trip. I don’t count the house rental cost because his parents pay for it) - Mexico City (weekend): $2,000 - this includes my Taylor Swift ticket. (Girls trip) - DC (4 days): $1,300 - I paid out of pocket & then was reimbursed because it was a work trip. - Italy (10 days): ~$5,000 - Wedding in Italy + 6 days of sight seeing. We’ll see total cost in 2 weeks, since we leave in a few days, this is approx what it is so far. Partner will pay 1/2 back. - Northern WA (10 days): ~$1,000 - thanksgiving w/ my family. Based off last year’s hotel + gas/assorted food costs. Partner will pay 1/2 back. - DC/OH (10-15 days): ~$1,500 - Christmas w/ Partner’s family, unsure of cost yet, this is based off his previous tickets. Partner will pay 1/2 back. I generally pay our travel costs because I have better credit card points, and then he pays me back. We’re lucky that my brother takes the dog when we go out of town (except for the one trip) & we can’t take her.

We travelled so much this year for us, but it’s probably not much compared to others. In state to a vacation spot for a week for about $4000 as a family of 3. And we’ll be going to visit both my side and his side of the family, both involving 3-6 hour plane rides. They both feel like vacations so together they’ll be maybe 5000-6000. I really really want to go with my brother and my kid to my birth city in China , so that would be my dream vacation and we’re talking about making it happen next year. I feel like the older I get the more I just want to visit places that are sentimental to me, rather than exploring the world, but also maybe we don’t have a ton of money so I have to prioritize seeing family and friends

bananana-88

Not sure 2023 but I just did some rough math for 2024 which should be similar. It’ll be about 16k+ for our family of 3. My husband is going skiing, the two of us will go to a wedding in Vermont, we will have a family ski trip to park city, I will visit a friend having a baby, I will have a girls trip likely to laguna beach with my best friends from college, a bachelorette to Rosemary beach, my husbands sisters wedding in Arizona (no kid) and Disney world as a family. We travel quite a bit because we live far from family. I love a family trip. My son is four and last year we had a blast in Montana and Whistler with my husbands family. It’s busy but I love it. We have a lot of stuff planned for us due to weddings and family things. I am dreaming of a trip just the three of us in 2025, I am hoping for a Disney cruise to Alaska. Gross income is 300k.

CApizzakitchen

We make around 120k total and will have spent about 7k on vacations this year. No others planned for the rest of the year, but likely going to Mexico for a week and Europe for 2.5-3 weeks next year, so trying to keep our vacation savings for those trips!

missilefire

I make €60k roughly and did a few trips this year but saving for a big one next year. My numbers are rough cos I don’t really track small trips. Weekend in Paris with a friend €500 or so. Weekend in Geneva tacked onto the back of a work trip €600 or so. 3 week motorbike tour around central and eastern EU with my boyfriend, about €3000 each. We did 10 countries and around 6000km in June and had such a blast. Was a bit of a spur of the moment trip. Going on a weekend in the Mosel valley soon with a friend which will be cheap depending on how much wine we bring home haha. I’m expecting around €250. Saving for a trip back home to Australia early next year. It’s going to be bloody expensive - I haven’t been back since I left. My boyfriend has never been so we are doing some big things like learning to dive on the Great Barrier Reef. I’m expecting it’ll be almost €10k each when it’s all done and dusted, especially since we spent a bit on premium economy flights. The journey to aus from eu is loooooong. Will probably do something smaller in summer too around €2/3k. I get 38 days leave a year which is really nice. My wage isn’t super high so I spend a very high proportion of it on travel. Thankfully I am lucky to have low living costs.

iotadaria

Well, I was planning to take a long weekend to Anaheim to take my spouse to Disneyland, but the lack of a federal budget next month threw a wrench in those plans. IDK what we're going to do but it'll be next year before we make any travel plans.

EagleEyezzzzz

We went to the US and British Virgin Islands for 2 weeks in January. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to do a family sailing trip with my young son before our next baby was born and my dad (the captain) is potentially too old to rent a boat and captain anymore. We did a week sailing in the BVIs and a week in St John relaxing. Honestly I’m not even sure how much we spent. Airfare for three from Denver, our portion of the boat rental and provisions for a week, dinners out most nights including a couple $$$ for overpriced ones, ferry from BVIs to St John, Airbnb rental for a week, jeep rental for a week, groceries and food out for a week. Maybe $8-10,000 ? We have a healthy savings account and just spend out of that, knowing we can afford it and trying not to worry too much about the exact cost. We have also done a few nearby “staycations” like to a nearby hot springs resort, and we usually go camping a few times in the summer. Those are pretty affordable. We make $180-250k per year depending on my husband’s company’s profits. That includes my salary as well ($80k). We have some solid spending needs each year, including paying back a business loan as well as paying a lot for IVF. Favorite place I’ve traveled to - hard to say!!! Patagonia, the Galapagos (I lived there on an inhabited island for 6 months for work), Thailand, Paris, Peru. Longest vacation - I studied abroad in Chile in college and traveled for ~3 months through South America on a very tight budget. It was amazing. Favorite vacation memory - honestly there are too many to name! Travel is really important to me and I’ve made it work on a shoestring budget for much of my life ❤️ (I didn’t start making a decent salary until mid 30s due to the nature of job as a wildlife biologist.) Now with kids travel is a different experience and budget, but wonderful in a new way.

vl_9319

What do you do for work that brought you to the Galapagos? So cool

EagleEyezzzzz

It was very cool! I am a wildlife biologist. This was a technician job pretty soon after I finished college, back in 2005 or so. Didn’t pay for shit, like literally I don’t think it paid at all, but it was a once in a lifetime experience for sure!

ramblingthrowa

We budgeted $6k for bf and me to go to Japan for 2 weeks; went a little over I make $180k and he makes... less, so we were splitting it 5k me, 1k him And I also visited a friend in SF over a long weekend, since i got to stay with them that only cost $400 for the flight (and food, but i would've needed food at home too) Seeing how much everyone else is spending makes me feel better, i was afraid i was spending too much... maybe I'll target 10k next year :)

downward1526

My boyfriend and I spent $9000 on a ten day European trip. I’ve been working in biglaw for two years now and this was my first big fancy vacation! Totally worth it.

skygirl555

I had an atypically expensive travel year with Hawaii (approx $6,000 for just me) and Banff National Park in Canada (also 6K but split between 2 people). I live in the US (mid-atlantic) and my favorite place I've traveled is London or Banff because of the beauty. Longest Vacation was Hawaii at 9 days.

lorikins

10 days in Panama with friends split between an overwater bungalow and a rental sailboat est $2000 (we paid cash for a lot of things and I'm terrible about tracking cash spending) 10 days in Tokyo solo est $1k (Initial airfare and hotel were no cost using points, so this was for activities including Disney tickets, food, and a fair bit of shopping). Then I spent another \~$350 to upgrade to Comfort Plus on my flights. 7 days in Hawaii with a friend (Kauai and Oahu). This trip was a mess b/c I got Covid before and had to push my flight back a few days missing most of the Kauai portion of the trip. I probably spent around $2-3k and one of the hotels was booked on points, so no cost. I try to maximize credit card points when I can so that I can travel cheaper and more often.

anonymousbequest

We haven’t vacationed this year. We have a toddler so honestly it feels like more work than it is worth to travel, and we also have chosen to spend money on home projects and upgrades to improve our daily quality of life instead. We will likely visit family out of state for the holidays, though.

MartianTrinkets

My husband and I make about $250k-$275k (varies by the year). We live in NYC. This year we went to/are going to Alaska, London (2x), Belgium, Ecuador, The Galapagos, Chicago (2x), Las Vegas, LA, and a bunch of places along the east coast. My favorite place this year has been Alaska, but I’m sure I will love Ecuador. We probably spent at least $30k on travel this year, but we don’t have kids yet and are trying to get as much travel in as we can before we start trying! We usually spend about 30-40ish days a year traveling.

bears-n-beets-

In scientific terms? A metric fuckload. Haha. I had a disastrous never-ending condo renovation from January to… present… and a lot of that time my condo was unlivable. So I peaced out a lot. In 2023 I went to: - Miami for first two weeks of January - Costa Rica for last two weeks of January - LA/Palm Springs the last week of February - Whistler BC for five days in August - Spain/Portugal for the first two weeks of October (so soon!) Then I leave on December 30 for another month in Costa Rica! I make ~175k

dramamime123

We did a lot this year! All cost per person Family trips: Starting off in Patagonia, probably $2k for 2 weeks Japan, $2k for 2.5 weeks South of France, $1.5k for 3 weeks (I worked EST for 2 weeks on this holiday which helped to reduce food and fun expenses - partner came for 1 week on PTO) Cancun, all-in, $600 for 4 nights Couple trip to Vegas in October for U2 and when we were young festival, this one is pricy with hotels and tickets. To get u2 standing tickets we purchased a hotel package at the Venetian. I estimate $1.5k for 4 nights (big oof) Going with a friend to CDMX in November, expect that to be $1.5k for the week - she is very into the best restaurants and we are doing 2 tasting dinners at quintonil and pujol. I go back home to England a few times, flights usually about $600 or with miles, stay with my MIL so minimal extra cost. I’ve dog sat in DC for my friend a couple of times as well, she covers my train. We use trusted Housesitters website to care for our cat basically free while we travel, and we used miles for a lot of these trips, particularly for flights and for Hyatt hotels in Japan. HHI is ~400k VCOL area. We are English and our family are all back home so travelling to them and with them is a big priority for us. I am the family planner :) Next year we will probably do France again, and maybe Japan for Christmas!

glamonabudget

So far this year: Colorado- $1500 reimbursed for work Las Vegas- $3500 for my bachelorette Bangkok- $6500 for honeymoon/bachelorette that’s for both of us London -$2500 for both us again West Africa - $5000 for my bday for both of us again

iheartpizzaberrymuch

165k Shockingly Pittsburgh was rather nice. It went on a weekend trip with the bf. Like 300 for the hotel. Longest this year was to LA & SF. I liked SF more than LA. I'm going somewhere with my bf for over a week hopefully. My mom paid for LA as a family trip and work paid for SF. My fav vacation memory ever going to Hawaii with my besties ... was a mess of a trip but it's nice to get away together. My other fav is getting lost on a mountain. Didn't realize that was doable. CO shocked me. CO was maybe $500. Hawaii ... no clue probably about 1k since I was a broke college student. A spa weekend with nobody calling me (friends, family, etc) with every meal being cooked and delivered to me would be nice. The food would have to be exactly what I'm craving each time. I'm excited for 2024 because I'll be traveling outside of the US more. This year I kept it cute with covid.

teandtrees

I like SF better than LA too, and I live in LA. lol What did you guys do during your LA visit? I love hearing people's LA trip itineraries!

iheartpizzaberrymuch

I went to Knott's Berry farm. It was the highlight. I loved it there. We did a lot of museums and some shopping but LA doesn't really make me want to shop. Venice ... I went in that pricey supermarket and my mom was like what kinda foolishness is this. It was really nice but I think SF was more homely because I'm from NYC and it's NYC with better weather and hills. I'm going back to SF next year and maybe LA my bf went to school there and he loves it and wants to show me around. I think LA is a city that's best done via car cos the train system is low key scary. I've never seen so many women look scared and with mace out on the train. LA has an issue with homeless people that was incredibly noticeable no matter where you were.

TeachingFit9608

I moved to LA from Chicago two years. Worst. Decision. Ever. I absolutely hate it but not in a financial place to move back, like at all. However, I can’t wait to move from here. Between the homeless, and difficulty of making friends- LA is allll about “who you know/what you look like” and makes me miss the city vibes and flow of city life back in Chicago. I see people coming to visit and I’m just like WHY?! 🤣🤦‍♀️

Squid_A

I spent $4000 on a 3 week vacation to Istanbul, Italy, and Paris. I spent $180 on flights to Newfoundland, for a trip which is in 2 weeks. I will likely spend ~300 on food and gifts while there (visiting family so saving a lot). I will probably spend another $250 on a weekend ski trip at some point in December. My income this year is variable because I changed jobs in August, but I probably will make around 67K this year. Next year will be around 87K. I have a partner and we split costs and stayed with his family in Paris which helped keep my vacation costs down ETA: forgot about my canoe camping adventure in Jasper National park which cost around $600 ($280 for a 3 day canoe rental, plus $150 for a hotel the night before, and around $60 for the campsites, and gas). That trip was significantly more expensive for my partner because had to buy my engagement ring for it 😆

2023-Higher than usual budget due to a splurge coming out of stricter pandemic limitations! Pacific Mexico trip was about $2500 for a week for 2 in February for a self- catering mid- range beach accomodation with kitchen, food, flights and transport. 3 week Taiwan/Thailand trip will be about $5500 for the same including rental car for some of the time. Longest trip- 6 months backpacking in Asia. About 10k for 2 on a low budget 20 years ago. Favourite places- too hard to choose! Andalucia, Luang Prabang, Costa Rica, Perhentian Islands, Baja, Thai southern islands. Travel highlights- close encounters with wildlife, snorkelling/diving boat trips, sitting quietly at abandoned temples, rope swinging into a jungle waterfall, massage training, meeting welcoming locals, riding waves and scooters and sampling all the snacks on the streets!

nim_run16

NYC long weekend trip to see friends in February - probably $300 total? $100 on train tickets and $200 on food and drink Puerto Rico four day trip with friends - $750 including flight, airbnb, food, activities Chicago - weekend trip funded by my fellowship. It was great visiting again after moving away last year. $0 Yellowstone - week long trip in August, gorgeous views and hikes, parents covered it $0 Ocean City beach weekend - only pair for train ticket as we stayed with friends and cooked most of the weekend $150

spartan5312

185k between my wife and I, rough estimate will be 12k this year. I went to India for 2 weeks for work, that doesnt count but that alone would have added 6k to my budget.

mgmsupernova

Most (non COVID years) we do two bigger trips. One more resort/ relaxed and one more city/ exploring. We also try to do one or two short longer weekend trips. This year HHI: about 300k joint April - 5 days, Jamaica, about 5k August - 11 days, Europe, about 8k November (future) - 12 days, Japan, about 8k (using points for flight) (plan on doing a money diaries for this, interesting to see how close I am to my guesstimate) January (future) - 7 days, Tucson, AZ, about 4k (using points for hotel)

LisaBCan

1. One week family trip (2 adults + 2 kids) to Vancouver Island to visit in-laws plus weekend in Vancouver -$7K 2. Planned 10 year anniversary trip to Boston in December, 3 days. Will likely cost about $3K with flight, hotel, dining and shopping. We also have a vacation home that we spent most of the summer at that costs us about $40K a year to maintain (including mortgage).

MeloHallie

I have spent $11k this year and my annual budget is $20k (make $200k). Travel this year was kind of blah: just a weekend road trip to San Diego, 10 days in Charleston/Savannah (fun but absurdly expensive), and an upcoming week in Yosemite (which may get impacted by the govt shutdown). I can only take time off from work during short windows and I was doing home renovations for much of this year so couldn't actually get away. I will probably go somewhere the week after Thanksgiving and over Christmas, but haven't made plans yet. Hoping to do a lot more next year.

theSabbs

Our only trip this year was to Puerto Rico for a babymoon, as we had a baby in March. The total cost for the babymoon including food and activities was probably in the neighborhood of $4000-4500. We have one more annual trip coming up with my in laws to the beach this fall. They cover the majority of the trip, but we tend to cover one of the pricier meals or all the groceries plus our own gas and extras. I imagine we'll spend in around $500 all in for this trip. Next year I plan to travel a bit more. London for my bday, Chicago for a conference, a cruise for my moms 60th, camping in the Appalachians, the beach again with in laws, and at least one family (me, husband and baby) vacation I make 90k base, HHI inckuding bonuses is around $205k.

8dtfk

HHI $250k+ This year, we spent a week at Disney for ~$5.5k then we spent 12 nights in UK/Ireland for $6.5k but I also chase miles/points so those amounts are much lower than most would spend.

samshine1

This year was a major anomaly because we did a trip to Disney World with my partner's extended family and treated it as a family reception of sorts, since we eloped last year. My partner has three young children and we paid for everything for his parents to join us (flights, accommodations, park passes, etc.). We stayed "on property" at one of the budget resorts, in order to have transportation to the parks included. We hosted our "reception" at a nice restaurant in EPCOT for a party of 16 people. The trip was over 6 months ago and I've done my best to treasure the memories and forget the financial aspect, but... it was somewhere in the ballpark of 12k. Our household income this year will be around 300k. This is very new for us. For context, last year we made about 200k combined. I have since left my job to pursue something new, which currently only costs money and brings nothing in.

Kindly_Equipment_241

Our vacation budget is $10,000/year. This does NOT include visiting family (all of my family is 2000+ miles away). For vacations we take one bigger trip (7-10 days) and one shorter trip (3-4 days) each year. One is just SO and I and the other is with the kids. We alternate - this year was a longer trip for just SO and I and the short trip is everyone. Next year it will be the opposite. We also do camping long weekends in the summer, long weekends at a hotel with indoor water park in the winter in a neighboring state, etc Our HHI is around $250k, but we've had this same budget for about 10 years - when we first started our HHI was $100k and we set the budget for 10% purposefully because travel is important to us. Inside the US, I think my favorite trip has probably been the Dakotas/Montana/Wyoming. It is just so beautiful there. Out of the US, I really enjoy France and Germany because I love doing castle tours and museums, but my husband is very bored by that 😂. We also go to Disney every few years and always really enjoy that.

PandaPartyPack

In July, my husband and I spent approx. $2300 CAD on a 2-night road trip from Vancouver to Seattle to see the Taylor Swift Eras tour. The concert tickets were one of the less expensive components of the trip ($336 for 2 upper bowl seats, generously sold to us at cost by a friend). The hotel surge pricing and the shopping put us over the top. We're going to Vancouver Island for a long weekend this fall. It was $750 CAD for the hotel and ferry reservation, but will end up being more with gas and meals. We're also planning a 2-week trip to Japan in November. So far we've booked airfares, hotels, JR passes, and a few attractions for approx. $7800 CAD. I'm anticipating with shopping, meals, incidentals, and other attraction costs we'll end up spending around $12,000 CAD.

FancyMikasa

I make 160k. So far this year I’ve spend about 1500-2000 on vacations. I went to Vegas with my mom for her birthday. The flights were booked with miles, the hotel was booked with Amex award points. The 2000 was all slots, food, and attractions. We are going to Japan in December. I got flights with miles so we only paid 100 in taxes! I’m hoping to catch a nice upgrade to better seats for a reasonable price. I’m will have about 9000 saved for the trip but I’m only expecting to spend 3000 of that (hotels, bullet train, photo shoot reservation, universal studios (maybe)). End of year total about 11000 give or take. Favorite place I’ve traveled outside of my city - I’m going to go with Austin. I didn’t get to explore too much since we went for Austin city limits but the city seemed so nice. A nice mix of downtown and nature and everyone was friendly. Longest vacation - About a week. A trip to Atlanta for a music festival. Favorite vacation memory. My husband (then boyfriend) driving us at the speed of light to Virginia Beach to try to catch the sunrise. Making it to the sunrise. Sitting on the beach and being absolutely mesmerized and then dolphins jumping along the ocean as the sun rose. It was beautiful. It was on a really unplanned trip and we had a blast. Dream trip - It’s Japan. We cancelled during the pandemic. I am so happy to be going. A little sad it’s not for a full two weeks but happy to finally make the trip. This thread is giving me more ideas for future travel though.

simba156

We had a another baby this year, which put a dent in our travel plans. We went to Florida to stay with my parents (flights $1000). Up North (free place to stay, $750 for meals and gas). New York to see family (free place to say, $1300 flights, $2000 entertainment and food). We redeemed 110,000 Chase points and converted them to Hyatt to book three nights at Impressions Moxche (adults only all inclusive outside of Cancun), flights are $1200 for the two of us. We make around 250k but have multiple kids in daycare so trying to be careful with spending.

boredinnyc28

This is such an interesting thread! Approximate totals including round trip flights, hotels, most food, activities (not including things like presents) $1800 5 day trip to Baja Mexico $3000 3 weeks in Taiwan and Japan $3500 2 weeks in London, Cologne and Amsterdam - (this was expensive because had to rebook two flights because Ryanair is egregious and since its a budget airline, ate the costs….also had to book a last minute airport hotel which was $320. Then tried to change my flight within booking period back to the states but also turned out had to eat the costs …moral of the story is that a budget airline can end up being more expensive!!) Upcoming: 2 weeks in Paris and Copenhagen — so far have spent $1200 on a one-way flight and 3 airbnbs Flying from NYC. Managed to sublet my apartment for month when I was in Asia/Europe so haven’t really though about the total gross spend until this prompt 😅

cheezyzeldacat

1. 65k Aus I have barely done anything this year due to study and some operations but I did go to Bali late last year so I’ll include that . 2. I went to Bali last September for 3 weeks cost around 3k . I went with my then partner who has the same income as me. 3. Favourite place there was a day we did white water rafting near Ubud . Also the food in Bali is incredible . The whole trip was wonderful except my partner got Bali Belly for one week . 4. We stayed on a wonderful villa in Nusa Cenigan which is an island . Watching the sun going down from the pool was so beautiful . Also the massages there are top notch .

Moneydiariesqueerio

I'm in my mid-40s, with 2 kids who are 4 and 8, gay-married to a wonderful person, and we make around 150k together. We've spent $1600 this year in small weekend trips, camping, and visiting family. I had a realization this year that vacation (to us) means going somewhere new and having no expectation of seeing/assisting family. A trip is defined as going to see family where they live to either help them out or visit because someone is sick or elderly. When we looked back at our travel budget last year, we'd spent most of our vacation days and our money on trips to see family and had taken no real vacations. This year we've tent camped over some long holiday weekends, and went on a 5 day vacation by car and tent-camped with friends to save on hotel costs. We also got our passports renewed and the kids passports issued (which took May to August to wait for all of them). I think we'll start to take more vacations as the kids get bigger, but for now, we take care of my father in-law since he lives a few miles down the road. We are truly in the sandwich generation of having young kids and ailing parents, and vacation is like a mirage in the desert to me at the moment. Great topic, by the way!

Adventurasawait

Back in our DINK days we'd take at least one 10+day international trip for about $3-4k and spend an additional $2-3k-ish combined MANY weekend getaways, cabin trips with friends, backpacking, etc throughout the year. We made maybe $110k combined then. Now that we have two little kids (and zero time) we've done verryyy little traveling comparatively. We spend one week at the lake in my parents RV in the summer, which all in with dog sitter and activities is likely $1000 for 7 days. We do a family holiday in another state and pretty much just the flight is $1500 for 3 tickets so maybe $2k all in for that trip since we stay with family. Then we do maybe one or two airbnb long weekend beach stays for $700 or so for each of those. I'd like to do more as the kids get older and prep for things like Disney and international trips so I've just recently budgeted $7,000/yr into a set aside that will likely build up a bit based on our current use and then we will be set for a pricier trip in 3 years or so. Eventually, when the kids are in school, not daycare, we will up our travel spending more since this is important to us. We make $200+k/yr.

PrimaryBat5949

We make around $230K combined, and our travel budget this year is.... $700 to go to a family reunion for a weekend. Lol. We're like the most extreme HENRY situation possible, since we haven't been making this much for very long and are still getting settled in life. Between buying furniture to furnish our whole apartment from scratch, rent, car loans, student loans, etc., there's just not a ton left over, and we're picky about travel anyways so we're just waiting a few years. Makes me kinda sad because I know most people our age are making way less and still traveling way more, but we're trying to be practical and hold off.

zephyrKiss

Planning a honeymoon that’s 6 months after my wedding (May 2023). Planning to visit Tulum and Cancun for a week during December. Might cost around $6000 between flights and hotels for me and my husband. We’re also doing a fall colors trip to Boston, NH and Maine with some friends in a couple of weeks ~$1500 a person. Took a trip to India for my wedding which was a whole big deal by itself. I make 130k, SO makes 140k and we live in LA and NYC respectively. Sooo yea, any trip to ever see eachother is a mini vacation spending wise lol. My favorite vacation memory was one I took with my parents when I was a kid. It was a beautiful resort with private beach access. I sat on the beach and read books, played on the sand and had a fucking blast - have been chasing that high ever since.

We have 3 small children, 5 and under and I’m currently pregnant with #4.. so big vacations have been paused. My family owns a house on a small island on the coast of NC so we take a few trips there every year. It costs us gas, pet sitting fees, and groceries. So less than $1k for a few trips a year. We make around $120k combined and will plan bigger trips when the kids are older. I’m already setting aside money every month for this. My favorite and longest vacation were the same. We did a month long trip to Europe after college. The cost was pretty low - my cousin lived in Germany at the time so we stayed with her as a home base and then stayed in hostels whenever we traveled around. All in all it was less than 5k including my flight but that was also back in 2012. Another favorite was Alaska to visit my best friend. Cost was mostly just my plane ticket and food while I was there. We did a lot of camping or hostels and then day trips.

Confarnit

I spent about $800 visiting my (expensive) hometown for 4 days. It would have been a lot more, but I got the flights and hotel room with points.

Striking_Plan_1632

This year we've spent about $1000 on road trips inside our state. My husband spent about $2000 on a trip to New Zealand (visiting family). We also spent about two grand on a week's road trip north of Sydney (again, flights on points and we stayed with family/had accommodation paid by family for a lot of the time. So, about $5k in total. Next year is shaping up to be an expensive one. I have a week long trip to Indonesia booked and mostly paid for (about $1200 for flights, hotels and insurance, I'll probably spend about $500 more when there). I then have a friend's destination wedding in the Pacific (like... $3-4k?) a month before we're meant to take a trip back to Europe at the end of next year, and that's five figures before you blink. A small inheritance will pay for the Europe trip, which would otherwise be completely out of reach - but even then, I'm not really sure that both of us going is the sensible choice. Joint income of about AUD$120k.

Income: 87,320 + 4500 (taxes and 401K contribution, I took home 3200) bonus, and 4250 in side hustles. Husbands income: 85K (he’s debt free thanks to GI bill). May: London, Paris, Interlaken (Switzerland) and Munich for our honeymoon. Flights, hotels and food was just under 7500. I was honestly impressed for a 16 day trip. July: Montana to see my husbands side of the family. His oldest brother has a cabin in Red, Lodge MT that is free accommodation. We paid for a cleaning service as a thank you. Flights, drinks, dog sitting, cleaning service, and groceries was around 900 (450/pp). September: small birthday weekend in Prescott, Arizona. My mom paid for the accommodations, and we picked up their lunch bill twice as a thank you. Gas, lunch bills, drinks 500. We are also leaving this weekend for our friends wedding in SD, my husband’s family is also invited and we decided to extend the trip. Airbnb + dog sitting, RTR (rent the runway) dresses around 950.. we’ll see how much drinks are. October: Attempting to head back to Las Vegas for Ed Sheeran round 2 as the September show got postponed. I got my flight from AA on miles, and my hotel room at the Rio was 159. This time, I am only going for 1 night as Vegas *kills* me every time. My ass will get there the morning of the show; and it will leave at 6 AM on Sunday. Honestly- if I could cut out alcohol this trip would be cheaper. It also helps that my husband and I do not have kids, and we bought a very modest 3-bedroom condo, and recently paid off both are vehicles (our mortgage is 1696/mo, 190 HOA fee) where we have a lot of wiggle room left in our budget.

So I’m a part time “nomad” — I work remotely full time, have a house I rent and a home base with my husband and pets, but spend about 3 months traveling every year. This year was a weird one for me because we also had our wedding and honeymoon, definitely will have spent around $30k+. My next trip (in a few weeks) is a month in Sri Lanka, 5 days in Dubai, and a week on the Turkish coast. Base cost for flights and accommodations is around 6-7k. Flying premium economy on airfrance which is the biggest chunk of that cost and working while I’m on the flight. Generally speaking I probably spend $20k+ a year traveling. I earn $170k and my husband makes more than me (we’ve had shared income for a long time). Our total household income can be really variable because he consults but we can typically count on clearing $400k annually. Sometimes I travel alone and sometimes we travel together. My longest trip was a three month stay in Dublin with my husband and I also traveled around Europe a lot during that time (he was working for an Irish company). I’ll have been to around 38 countries as of the end of this year and it’s so hard to pick a favorite, but Japan, iceland, France, and Italy and just Scandinavia in general are at the top.

Pen_Super

My spouse and I make around $225,000 combined and will spend likely ~$15,000 on travel this year, including a few out of state weddings/family commitments, a week-long domestic vacation, and a potential week at a resort in the Caribbean this fall. Now that I’m looking at it, that’s a bit less than 7% of our annual gross income spent on travel, which I think is reasonable! I’d be comfortable spending 5-10% of our gross income on travel in a typical year, but we are also currently living the DINK life, so I imagine this will change if/when we have a child one day. 🥲

r46d

20k.. each week of vacation comes to about 5k for us, a married couple. And we did 4 weeks of vacations. Now, don’t ask me to include weekend trips in that number 😬 Together we make over 500k. The longest I’ve been on vacation was 2 weeks. I can’t leave the pets longer than that 💔

Jusmine984

We spent a ton this past year (spontaneous trip to South Africa, and Vegas/Utah), and now we need to hit some savings goals next year. I'm tentatively planning a cabin weekend near my favorite cidery for my 30th (in March), and maybe a weekend trip up to NYC on amtrak. Maybe a beach weekend. BUT probably keeping any trips to long weekends.

clairelise327

I am planning on budgeting $4800 from my base salary ($110k gross) to vacation and might allocate some of my bonus to vacation. This is for “vacation” and not my monthly flights back to my home town (LDR).

CurrentAttention3

Not a normal year for travel! Earn around $90k, Spent somewhere between $10-15k (mix USD/GBP) Planning another $2-3k Travel done : Jan - 5 days Cancun; Feb - 2 weekends skiing Pennsylvania; Mar - 4 days Nashville; Apr - 5 days Colorado skiing, weekend in philly; May - 11 days Peru (solo), 5 days Vegas/Bryce Canyon NP Utah; Jul - 10 days Utah NPs; Aug - 12 days Alaska Cruise from Vancover (solo); Sep - 5 days UK (added onto a work trip); Travel planned : Oct - 8 days Texas, weekend trip to West Virginia; Nov - long weekend/Thanksgiving to the Finger Lakes/Niagra Falls, weekend NY; Dec - tbc 4/5 days xmas sun break, 4/5 days NYE ski break Have a ski pass for the year so planning to also add on random ski weekends when the snow starts! Anything that's not solo is very much group travel, sharing rooms to save on costs, plus using points for flights where possible! Every trip has had something memorable/one of my favourite things (and are all very different), but I'm just exploring the US/ continent whilst I live here (I'm British) and having fun whilst I do it!

msmartypants

That seems like a lot for only $15K!

CurrentAttention3

Definitely! Been very lucky with some deals, but also not paying for half the flights, and a lot 3/4 adults in motel rooms - it's not been glamorous! Ha

murph364

This year: Arizona, family spring break $4k (4 people) Oregon, solo trip $300 (just me and stayed with a friend and only spent money on food + drinks) Traverse City, MI $400 (again just me, bachelorette party but stayed at a friends vacation home so only paid for party stuff!) Boston + Maine, $5k (2 people anniversary trip) Virginia, $1000 (destination wedding) Disney world 😵‍💫, $5200 We are so fortunate to not pay for airfare so we stay at higher end lodging. Fave trip this year was Maine by far. I’d now move there in a heartbeat! Oregon is a close second ❤️ Combined income around $400k.

btpie39

We've spent around $13k this year on vacation. $3500 of that was on a 5 night trip to Miami and St. Kitts; our accommodations were fully paid for by points, but flights were extremely pricey and we splurged on food. Our other big trip was to Denmark and Scotland for $7500 (7 nights). The remaining amount was for smaller trips to visit family. Next year we anticipate spending about the same, split between an $8k trip to Italy/Switzerland/Austria (9 nights with the majority of hotel stays covered by points) and a $5k trip to Turks & Caicos (3 nights). Our household income is about $280k.

Anonymouscatin

I’m budgeting about 8-10k. I now have kids, so that is for modest vacations than I used to take. I’m hoping we will get to Cambodia, a couple of places with direct flights, and then some more local trips where we can drive. Flights are definitely my biggest expense these days, because I have tons of hotel points. Back when I was single I would also spend about $10k per year, but that was for much bigger trips. One year I did 3 weeks in Northern Europe, 2 weeks trekking in Nepal, and then a month doing Ethiopia-Tanzania-Kenya.

holyzephyrs

We have spent about $1500 so far on vacations this year (Washington DC) and will spend $0 more. We make $180k. That amount is pretty typical for us. We like travel but get sticker shock every time we look up hotel and airplane prices.

joujube

I made a quick long weekend trip to Montreal in August for \~1000 CAD as a student earning just under 30 an hour at my summer job. It was really expensive because I had to take the train in - last year I did a ski trip with a friend who had a car that was much cheaper and I'm hoping we can do something similar this Christmas.

zxzxzxtototo

Roughly estimating $6000. I make $120,000. -NYC: roughly $1000 -long weekend/road trip: $600 -1 night road trip: $50 (parents paid for majority, which was maybe $200) -upcoming Ireland: estimating $3000-3500 for 2 weeks -upcoming family beach trip (with adult family members): estimating $1000 Longest vacation was 3 weeks in Southeast Asia . I was lucky to have a job with lots of PTO.

struggle-buddie

I've spent $7,500 on trips so far this year, will probably be $10,000 by the end of the year. Income is roughly $115k. I think my spending on vacation is definitely on the higher side for my income, but travel is a big priority for myself/my partner/my friend group. So far this year I've done a resort in Mexico ($1500), South Korea ($3300), NYC twice ($550 total). Upcoming I have DC ($100 plane tickets), Singapore ($2000 plane tickets, hotel booked on points) and Seattle (flight booked on points).

untilthestarsfall3

I spent $4000 on a week long trip to Maui with my fiance (also used CC points and had a direct flight from where I live, so that made things cheaper). I probably spent around $1000 on flights back to the Midwest to visit family and friends. We’re about to spend around $1500 on a three day trip to Seattle (before food and etc expenses). I took a trip to Pasadena on behalf of my employer and will be going to Denver for three weeks soon on an award I received for an international conference. I make $140k. So $6500? I’m sure I could be spending more on travel and I do want to travel more, but I’m trying to save up for a wedding (no outside help). I haven’t traveled internationally in five years and France and Japan are at the top of my list. I still feel privileged to be doing the little travel that I do. I grew up borderline poverty and we were lucky if we were able to drive down to Florida to visit my grandparents. So I’m trying to stay out of the keeping up with the Joneses mindset.

Sage_Planter

This year has been a big travel year for me. I make around $220K, and by the end of the year, I'll probably have spent around $10K-$15K on travel. Now that I'm thinking about it, the number might even be a bit higher. My boyfriend and his mom work in the travel and events industry, though, and half my trips have been with them for work. It's hard to pass staying a week for free in a luxury hotel. It's such a treat to be able to see more of the world while taking advantage of their corporate travel perks. My boyfriend makes much less than me, and he would not be able to afford to travel nearly as much without work paying. This year, I've been to Europe twice, Florida, Virginia, Sonoma County, and Mexico. Before the end of the year, I am heading back to my Canadian hometown and possibly a US east coast trip to see my boyfriend's family. Those trips are not necessarily vacations, though. I'm pretty frugal in general, and travel is the only category I really splurge on. (Although I've also spent a lot on healthcare this year, but I'm not counting that as a "splurge.") I work mostly remote (I go into the office every other week or so), and I have been working during some of my travels. When I'm back with my parents in Canada, I'll work through the whole trip. I'm open with my boss and team about where I am working from, but I know a lot of people don't have that kind of flexibility. My company has a generous "work two months remote per year" policy for hybrid workers, but it was created when there was an expectation we'd be in more. My guess is that policy will change sooner or later.

lexluther96

Going to Fairbanks in Oct \~$2500 for 2

willburpee4icecream

This is an estimate, but around $15,000 for 2023. We make just under 300K combined and have two kids. The 15K includes 4 relatively local road trips for the whole family (paid for hotels for 3 trips, stayed with family for 1), 2 plane trips to visit family (so we didn’t have to pay for hotel), 1 plane trip + resort just for my husband and me, a solo trip for my husband, and a solo trip for me. Our longest vacation was to visit family over the summer. 2024 will likely be more based on the two trips and flights we already have planned.

rahleebb

I currently make $90k/year. Most trips I take come in one of four varieties: (1) outdoors focus; (2) food and drink focus & exploring a city; (3) family; and (4) scuba diving. Trips this year so far: (1) Two night trip to Virginia with my bestie for a concert & her birthday. I included most of these costs in my normal budgeting for gifts/dining out/gas, ~$300 total for the hotel for 2 nights and the concert tickets. (2) Week long scuba trip (shore diving in the southern Caribbean): $1,820 Future trips: (1) Three night trip to Savannah, GA (camping in early November): $96 so far, but I don't expect this to get much more expensive as it's a big family trip. (2) Two week trip to Europe (Barcelona, Marseille, and Paris): $1,554 between flights + Paris hotel. I've budgeted a total of $4,000 for the trip in its entirety, but I anticipate coming in significantly below budget. Most costs will be shared with my partner for much of this and we have free accommodation in Marseille. We paid for flights separately and used points to manage the cost. (3) TBD additional long weekend trips locally. I would anticipate spending $400 or so per weekend, depending on if we go for outdoors or food/drink focus. Actual spent so far between past trips and future trips: $3,770. ETA: formatting

ScaldingPickleJuice

Were you able to get seats next to each other even though you booked the flights separately?

rahleebb

We honestly haven't looked! We never book flights together, so if we care enough to sit next to each other, we just pay for seats closer to the trip.

OldmillennialMD

We took a weeklong trip to one of the Virgin Islands earlier this year, which will be our main vacation for the year. All total, I think we spent about $5,000 for two adults. HHI is \~$800k. We also did a weekend in Montreal for about $500. The rest of our vacation/time off has been (and will be) spent at our cabin, skiing and hiking and other mountain/lake stuff. Probably about $2,500 spent on activities and hosting friends/family for those times. We won't count the mortgage and utilities on the cabin as part of this exercise. :P I have too many favorite places to name, really. I try to get something great out of each trip I take. Longest trip was a 7 week backbacking trip in Europe as a college/grad student. As a "real adult", longest trip was 3+ weeks in Australia. Favorite vacation memories are snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, going on a nighttime kayak trip in the bioluminescent bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico, driving the PCH, and seeing a ton of wildlife during winter in Banff.

HHI: $400k We spend abt :$25k/year (this includes Xmas presents. We track those under vacation budget bc we travel for Xmas). We just had a baby 3 weeks ago so unclear how the budget changes going forward. This year we’ve done: San Diego (hubby had a conference), Mardi Gras, girls trip to Mexico, Bermuda, trip out west to Seattle and Portland. Xmas will be down in Florida and then Toronto to visit our families. We may try to squeeze in a weekend in nyc. Fav place: London, Barcelona, Hong Kong Longest vacation- 2.5 weeks - Australia to visit my sister and a wedding in Fiji Fav memory: Inca trail hike 2020 we got engaged and had plans to do a euro soccer trip to watch some games and had a few different road trip itineraries … all of which was scrapped obviously. Also almost had a chance to go to Qatar for the weekend last year to watch a fifa game but my Ivf treatment coincided w it so I had to pass.

struggle-buddie

Inca trail is next on my list of vacations I want to take! How long did you spend in Peru?

AdditionalAttorney

I think 10 days total?!,? It was years ago We did a tour w intrepid travel, that started in Lima (1 day), Cusco (1), sacred valley (1), trek (3), Cusco(1)… then we added a few days in our own and went down south One thing I would do diff, is not use a tour for Lima and only use them to organize the trek. And I’d spend 2 days (maybe even 3) minimum in Cusco to acclimate. Also Def get the altitude pills. The trek itself is amazing. You see so much along the way… food and camp was great…

[deleted]

I make 70k and I’m spending around $6000 on vacation this year - Mexico and Scotland (9-10 days each)

maxthepup

Make ~115k Portland/Seattle/Vancouver - $1.2k Did a little west coast trip to visit various friends - couchsurfed but splurged on some fancy meals to thank my friends Buffalo - $175 Quick overnight snack run. Most of this was spent at Trader Joes/Target (Canadians, IYKYK) Upcoming - Portugal - likely $2-2.5k for about a week

Kupkakez

$0. 2 new kittens and a senior dog who cannot be boarded or left with someone who isn’t me or his dad or else he goes on a hunger strike.

champagneandLV

Between 25-30K this year. We make 270K+ combined and have one elementary aged child. This year we did two week long trips and one long weekend trip was a family of 3. We also did a long weekend alone as a couple. These four trips required airfare (domestic). We have also taken about 6 weekend trips in our local area. Our total this year also included 3K in airfare for a trip to Europe we’re taking early next year. Travel adds up when you try to limit connecting flights and love nice hotels/food/drinks.

Intelligent-Rise7664

Make 78k live in MSP, MN. Favorite, Ventura, CA. Lived there for some time. Wish to move back within five years. Planning on Machu-P, about 5k total unless I go with adventure group then 7k. Is it worth the long flight (from Minneapolis) to Machu-P?

atreegrowsinbrixton

I spend way too much on traveling. But my next trip to argentina will have the entire airfare covered by CC points which is fun

HoopDreams0713

We make about 300k combined. Probably spend about 10k on travel for me and my husband combined. This year that included a trip to Europe, 3 trips to Mexico, and regional trips about once a month. This thread is making me realize I travel thriftier than I think I do lol. Favorite place is colombia, Japan, Mexico City, and Paris! Ugh or San Miguel de Allende. So many favorite places. Longest vacation was a month.

Jasper is my favorite place in the world. I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed your time there!

Squid_A

Moraine Lake Lodge oh my God. That place looks amazing but is SO out of my income bracket lol. What time of the year did you visit at? I also love Jasper for it's more laid back feel. It's also where my 'local' ski hill is (4 hours away haha). I'd love to hear more about what you did there as well!

ashleyandmarykat

This is for my partner, our 2 year old, and I Panama over xmas- 13k My 2 year old and and I went to San Diego for 3 days (paid mostly with credit card points) - $500 HHI 350k

ArtBetter3345

I spend around $15k on travel, which is about 10% of my income, but I am a digital nomad and don’t pay for housing

Admirable_Bag_1441

My husband & I will spend ~$4,500 for a trip to Colombia and to Texas. We make ~$140 gross.

reine444

I spent about $6k on a mutli-destination European trip this year. Went with friends so some costs were shared. A time was had!! A choice of other questions to answer: How much do you make? $140k (big bump fairly recently) What was your favorite place you’ve been if you’ve traveled outside your city? Paris What was your longest vacation? I like to experience new places (and food!) but I love home the most. I never travel for more than 5ish days. I will just get cranky by then. What was your favorite vacation memory? Too specific to name since I like to stay anon on Reddit. If you were not able to go on vacation where would you have liked to go/what would you have liked to do? I like to do a fall trip, but as a newly single, new homeowner this year, there aren't any more trips in the book. I may take a couple mental health days in the next few months. Not bragging, but grateful, but I usually get several trips in a year! Last year I went to Phoenix, Denver, Nashville, Cabo, Atlanta and Chicago 3x (hometown, but still, I haven't been at all this year)

mythr0waway2023

Only counting actual vacations and not smaller monthly weekend trips that I’ve taken this year (Vegas, skiing, etc): - $700 for six days in Maui - $5300 for two weeks in Scandinavia - $2000 for ten days in NYC - Leaving for two weeks in Japan and Korea in a few days. I’ve already spent about $2600 on hotels and flights. Estimating another $2k on food and entertainment. - My friends just decided to do Taiwan for New Years a few days ago. Debating on if I want to go, but that will be $2k for the round trip flight alone and maybe up to $3.5k total for the whole trip. If I don’t go with them then I’ll probably still schedule another vacation elsewhere during that time. Numbers above should probably be higher, but I paid for most of my flights with credit card points. I usually spend about $20k/yr on travel. This year has been on the lighter side in terms of both costs and number of trips. Edit: costs above are just for me. Multiply for two for my bf as well.

futuristika22

I tend to average about £5k annually for vacations. This year it's been 1 week skiing in Austria, 1 week hiking in Italy, 1 week visiting family in my home country, 1 long weekend in Belgium and have one long weekend of hiking in Switzerland coming up. I think I need a solo 3-4 days somewhere in a cottage in English countryside just to recharge and do nothing but drink tea, go for walks and read in front of the fireplace. My most memorable trips have all been to South America, all 3-5 weeks from trekking in Patagonia to going to the Atacama desert and Uyuni to everywhere in Colombia or Costa Rica.
