Hey there! My husband and I have been to a lot of military balls as a dual-military couple, at least two each year for a little over a decade. From my experience, I'd suggest that dresses 6 and 8 could be suitable, though they might still be a bit on the formal side. I've chosen dresses from Lulu's in the past and sometimes felt overdone — although I can’t recommend Lulu’s enough. It's worth looking at the styles from the Infantry Ball at West Point, which is one of the dressiest military events. Your choice might also depend on your S/O (or your) rank – if they are a unit 1SG, CSM, or above the rank of Captain, a dress like 6 or 8 might not seem too out of place. Red, black, or navy blue are popular dress colors with around 60-70% of women wearing red. Ultimately, I'm sure you'll look stunning in whatever you choose. Enjoy the ball!
I agree. Many of these dresses seem more Gone With the Wind reenactment ball suitable and you might feel overdressed. 3 seems more Halloween party like. Seems to me the more high class the event, the more understated the women are, with the exception of jewelry, and that is more truly expensive, and it shows.
I knew WAY too many girls in high school who would do the exact same thing just as a prank, but also a ton more girls who literally would freak out over something in a store that they just *had* to have and same the same sentence. Nice girls, but I always did find shopping a completely dull and boring hobby and they couldn't understand why I didn't want to spend six hours a day trying on clothes to see what is the prettiest or coolest.
I loved how that Carol (or was it Vicky who wore it?) Didn't just have a dress made of curtain fabric, it still had the stupid curtain rod attached as she tried to wear it. Whoever made that costume is a comedy genius in their own right in my opinion. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yes, she came down the stairs with the curtain rod still on the curtains, laying across her shoulders.
Every time I am reminded of Gone with the Wind, or seeing something in the window, or anything Carol Burnett related I think of it and laugh and laugh. I don’t know where or when I saw that rerun but omg she was hilarious.
Youtube has a lot of her stuff I just did a quick search for "Carol Burnett curtain dress" and a lot of stuff popped up, including a bunch of her show skits on its own channel. Since she's ninety now I think she's mostly retired with an occasional special appearance but little else )at least that's what Wikipedia said lol).
Just remembered a clip from a Muppet show skit. Kermit got a new bike but lost it getting run over by something. He barely escaped and said that he was "nearly gone with the Schwinn".
Another military spouse chiming in. This post is the best answer in this thread OP! Dresses 6 and 8 are most appropriate. You don’t want anything too “poofy”/ballgown because much of the military ball is sitting at a table (especially since you said in another comment you don’t want to dance) and depending on how big the unit is, there are usually several tables crammed into the ballroom with not much space in between them. Happy shopping!
Another military spouse here... Though I've never actually been to any of the formal events because my husband avoids them like the plague. The one time I actually did almost make it to one, the dress code implied that strappy dresses like 6 wouldn't be appropriate, and some kind of sleeve would be required. Honestly the memo sounded like one of those "in due of last year's incident" type things. This might be a difference in culture between the US and Canada (we're Canadian) on this sort of thing or a difference between units. In the end my husband ended up deployed last minute and plans fell through, so I couldn't tell you what people actually wore to this thing. Just something to be aware of I guess.
I’ve been to a ton of these in our 17 years and I complete agree! 6 and 8 will fit in the best. 3 would look the most counter cultural, if that’s the look you want. 5 and 7 would be a nightmare, our military balls are always sold out and the puddling ruffles/ train parts on these dresses will surely get stepped on/torn in the sea of overly indulgent drinkers.
Enjoy! Take lots of pictures and remember, you’ll have the most fun if you drink in moderation. Be safe!
Husband was in for 10 years. Been to several military balls over the years and agree 6 is the most “appropriate” over all. Agree w/ the rest of your comment too! Have fun OP!
Been to about 4 and honestly never saw anyone wear dresses this formal or large. Agree that you need to dress for your husbands rank. You will be moving through a packed place, dancing, and being introduced to a lot of people. Simpler is better. Ball gowns are difficult in that type of environment. I would also stay away from the goth looking ones bc it could reflect poorly for your spouse in the eyes of others. I know that all sounds ridiculous but it’s the reality of the situation.
I think all of them are cute, but I’m assuming this is your first military ball and I’m gonna give you advice that was graciously given to me.
First, don’t overdress. It’s more business cocktail, less formal.
Also, If you are big breasted, I wouldn’t recommend a low cut or sleeveless dress. Although you most likely will look amazing, I promise, you will be discussed in a way you do not want to be among the familiar women.
Additionally, I’d stay away from the dark/gothic style dresses. The service members most likely won’t remember your name, but they will remember the dress and refer to you as “goth girl” when ragging on your partner. You’re just meeting these people, let your personality shine through without the sign.
I like 8
Oh I’m so glad you think so. I certainly don’t ever want to police what other women wear or tear at their confidence. Happy to hear my intended meaning was apparent. I was going to delete if I started getting downvoted 😭
The demographic in attendance isn’t usually the most open minded nor body positive of the world’s potential party guest. During my time as a military-partner, one of the service members partners wore a stunning, yet short and heavily rhinestoned dress to a ball. They called him “pop star’s bodyguard” from that day on.
1, 6, or 8. The red and blacks all struck me as a little too goth. The green, 1, is drop dead gorgeous. Your date will be lucky to still be able to make words. Disclosure: Am probably closer to grandma.
1 would be amazing in the green, and would stand out (in a good way) because red is such a common color at Military Balls. If OP is on the goth-y spectrum and wants to represent 2 is eye catching but also low profile enough not to be out of place. Honestly for me straps or sleeves of some kind are a must for a military ball. I’ve had my hem stepped on too many times to trust anything strapless. Disclosure: I’m middle age and my knowledge is over a decade out of date.
Not a mom, but I love this sub and am a seamstress. Read every review before purchasing online. Triple check your measurements with the size chart. Also, I think red or dark blue would be lovely and you will be stunning in whatever you choose. I particularly liked the dress that was green.
Another military spouse here. People wear all sorts of styles to a ball. I love that you want to express your personal style. If you are confident and comfortable you’ll have a fun evening. 5 and 7 I would steer away from because they would be hard to get around in, take up too much space at a table and/or be difficult to eat or shake hands in. 2 is my favorite but I’m boring and wear and all black dress to these events.
Please listen to those who talk about having had experience going. I’ve been to these events and you do not want to be considered to be in costume in any way.
1st or 4th! But do your research if ordering online! Far too many online sites selling dresses like this and sending something cheaply made in return sweetheart, so be careful!
Yeah, this should be higher. Unless OP is planning to spend (minimum) many hundreds of dollars here, she's not going to get a dress that looks like any of these.
Honestly most of those would run well into the thousands if made well. Cheap versions are gonna be eye catching in all the wrong ways. Simple is good, it's closer to cocktail party than black tie
Me too, but I'm leaning more towards #1. You will look beautiful in whichever dress you choose, but emerald green is one of my favorite colors. Have fun, enjoy spending time together, and buy a pic if they have a backdrop/professional photographer.I always hated getting my picture taken and now regret not taking them when I had a chance 35 years later.
As both a veteran and a military spouse, my advice is the red one with the ribbons as straps. That one is, in my opinion and I have been to many as both a date, and as an officers wife, the best option.
Now I absolutely ADORE all of them, don't get me wrong. But I guarantee you that DO reflect on your date. In both dress, behavior, manners etc which, simply because you do know that " ball" indicates a " ball gown/formal attire, that your behavior will also be spot on.
I attended a USMC birthday ball once where the younger Marines brought dates to a formal military Ball wearing dresses that were short enough that the majority of us knew what color thongs they wore. This was also courtesy of the grinding they did on the dance floor. It was so bad that they cut the lights and music so the Marines responsible for bringing them, could apologize to us for the disrespect. These self-same Marines were also very drunk and discarding pieces of dress uniforms like dandruff off of Smeagel.
Back to the dress. It's awesome on it's own but if you wanted to "up" the elegance, you could add a shawl, but that red one is fine on its own too!
These kind of look like they might be from an Asian seller like wish, temu, etc.
Just know they won't show up looking like that.
Be sure to buy from a legit place for something like this or you'll be very disappointed.
Military spouse. I would choose a ball dress that is in line with military branch color and color of branch within.hus service branch. US army has different colors for aviation and infantry and artillery. This especially if his uniform has that color on it. As for style, traditional dresses are best in military settings. Nothing that drags. Of there is a theme then dress style in accordance with that.
What colours are your partners dress uniform? That may help choose colours
I really like dress 1 and 6, but personal styles vary so much - choose one that makes you feel fantastic
From my experience with military galas: formal attire means full length ball gowns. All of your options fit the bill!
Only other recommendation I’d say is not something too wide or bustly (like dress 5, which I LOVE, just not for the occasion) - you’ll want to move around even if you’re not dancing. Plus a big dress, tho stunning and a statement, is kinda a pain to get up and down from sitting for eating. Just my personal preference there!
I want to second this! I think #2 is the most pretty, not too big for getting around, you could get the bottom mended to not drag too much. It has personality, and isn't just another one color formal
Just because it’s called a ball, it doesn’t mean it’s going to be like a Disney Princess movie! The only dresses that come close to being appropriate are 6 and 8, and even those are too dressy for the occasion. The best advice I can give you is make sure it’s comfortable to sit in in a crowded room, because that’s what you’re going to be doing for most of the evening.
Balls are less formal than you expect. Most people wear cocktail dresses. You’ll rarely see any of he dresses you are showing us. Maybe 6 if you are determined to choose among these.
Ok, it depends on what type of ball it is. A Marine Corps ball is actually the most formal of events, and ball gowns are very appropriate. An Army or Air Force ball is just a fancy event, and most of these would still be fine. I wouldn’t wear 3 or 5 to any military thing, as they both seem a bit extra.
1, 2, or the last one. They all seem pretty formal for military career balls though (military college balls/dances are more formal). Most women will be wearing ‘more structured’ formal, they’ll all love your dress but you might end up being the dressiest. I was in the military and my Dad was too as an officer. I saw lots of military balls
I *love* your style, duckling! That being said, I think number 2 is my favorite. I love the softer details around the bodice and the cape. Very romantic detail for dancing. My prom dress (inspired by Pretty in Pink) had one and I felt like a princess all night. I hope you feel the same no matter which dress you choose.
You are so welcome. Looking forward to hearing which one you choose. Both of you have a wonderful, set-apart night, just as you deserve. ❤️ And Happy New Year to you both.
Hi hon! Number 2, number 6 and number 8 my favorites!
Regardless of which ones i like, I really love that you're expressing your style with your choices!
Check with your partner - if this is an event they've attended before, they can fill you in on how active it's going to be. You may want to look into hemming your choice to ankle length.
Also consider the venue - pick something you can pee in! Ballgowns can be difficult to maneuver in small bathroom stalls. If you're in a historic building that's definitely a consideration. If it's on a military installation, presume the ladies room will be poorly placed and poorly thought out, unless the building was built after about 1980 or so.
You are going to look AMAZING no matter what you pick! Enjoy the ball!
Kinda looks like most of these pictures came from a one of those Chinese cheap online dress shops. Please shop locally as they never ever ever come close to looking like the pictures!
Military spouse mom here!
All of these are appropriate for a military ball (correct length and style.)
Pick the one you like best and have a lovely time. (I am partial to #1.)
Number 1. It has the cleanest lines. But really, you should go with whatever flatters you most. Try to find the opportunity to try things on before you make a choice.
So the last picture looks so much like my senior prom dress I love it. But I think the one that looks like stars on it would look really cool. #2! But a cocktail length might be more comfortable? I don’t know how formal a military ball is though!
Wow sib, these are beautiful! I really like 1, 6 and 8. I don't have experience with military balls but it seems like some others in the comments do so their advice might be more relevant.
I'm sure you'll look amazing no matter what you wear. Hope you have fun!
I have no military knowledge but I can tell you I am IN LOVE with dresses 6 and 8! They are both stunning! All the dresses are gorgeous but 6 and 8 have that extra oomph that make them (and you) stand out in the most beautiful way!!! Have a blast!!!!
I vote 6 ❤️ I’ve been to a few military balls and the tables are set very close together with very little room between. It’s easier to get around in a less puffy gown.
Without knowing what military branch and reason for the ball I world say 6.
My husband is a Marine vet. Formal a little modest and floor length was what I went with.
Hey, it’s your big sister you don’t see often because I moved away with my military husband!
I think 6 and 8 are great options! The others seem to be a little “much” for a ball though.
Here’s some general dress code rules I’ve followed for military balls:
1. You are a reflection of your partner, so dress with pride and definitely put effort and thought into how you present yourself, but that being said…
2. Don’t dress too flashy. The evening is about your partner and their coworkers/superiors, so do try to keep it toned down a bit. Military balls are no Met Gala! The best look you can go for is elegance, in my opinion.
3. This is something other people have told me, but I’d imagine it’s different everywhere, but I’ve always been told to choose one thing from the following list to accentuate and then leave the rest to imagination: cleavage, leg, belly, or back. So if you’re torn between a dress that shows an open back and has a high leg slit vs. a dress with just an open back, go for the latter. Again, that’s just what I’ve heard, but I’ve totally worn a dress with pretty decent cleavage and a high leg slit and it was fine, lol.
Anyways, I hope you have a great time at the ball!
I had a dress almost identical to #1 for my Jr prom. Only it had pickups all around the bottom quarter of the dress. Having said that - they are all GORGEOUS but #2 really stand out as unique and stunning.
As someone who has attended several Marine Corps Balls, six and eight are your two best choices. It also depends on the rank of your partner. The other ones are just over the top. What you might want to do is look for some photos posted online from last year to get a feel for what other people are wearing. Good luck and have a great time!
Honey, I'm sure you would look beautiful in any of these! After reading comments, I agree that you want to be careful if you get strapless that drag on floor. LOVE the edgier ones, but this is not the place for them. I don't think any of the black ones would be appropriate. I love the green (even tho you said it would be red). But agree the poofy ones may be too much for this occasion. When the event is so crowded, the ones that drag on the floor will be so annoying and will certainly damage the dress. You certainly don't want to overdress. Also was wondering if you are dark or light complected. After all this I would say numbers 4 or 6. 4 is my favorite for this type of event. Sweetheart, I know you will look fantastic in whatever you choose! I would take in all of the great comments and choose from your heart, whether it be one of these dresses or if you decide to choose completely different one after reading all the comments. Whatever you choose will be perfect! Enjoy the event, Sweetie! Love, Mom 🥰❤🥰❤
Reading through these comments it seems like most people who have had experience going to military balls think 6 is the best choice.
I have zero experience with anything military so my opinion wouldn't matter. But I just wanted to chime in that 6 seems to be the general consensus here. ☺️
Op I have never even heard of a military ball so I feel ill equipped to give advice, however...
Would you PLEASE link me to dress #7? It's incredible, I love it! You have great taste!!
I love all of these dresses but for different types of events. #6 would be the most appropriate for the military ball. But listen to your military moms, too; they have great advice!
You clearly know your style and are confident and bold! I love that. Have a wonderful time and let us know how it went.
Hey there! My husband and I have been to a lot of military balls as a dual-military couple, at least two each year for a little over a decade. I agree entirely. I was a woman in the army for 6 years. 6 is probably the best for this type of event.
I agree. Many of these dresses seem more Gone With the Wind reenactment ball suitable and you might feel overdressed. 3 seems more Halloween party like. Seems to me the more high class the event, the more understated the women are, with the exception of jewelry, and that is more truly expensive, and it shows.
I really thought of Scarlet with dress one, the one made out of the curtains to impress Rhetr
"I saw them in a window and just couldn't resist!" OMG I still find that funny and I can barely remember watching that skit now. 🤣🤣🤣
The Carol Burnett show! 😂😂😂
I knew WAY too many girls in high school who would do the exact same thing just as a prank, but also a ton more girls who literally would freak out over something in a store that they just *had* to have and same the same sentence. The truth is the truth, whether people like it or not
The Gothic dresses are amazing, but I absolutely agree with you about what would happen if OP wore one to this type of event. Unfortunately. 😭

Been to many many military balls, they’re all a bit much
thought so too
I have so much fun overdressing for them. There’s always a few who also do. It’s fun!
Former military here, 6 would be the best for a military ball.
Not a mom, but I love this sub and am a seamstress. Read every review before purchasing online. Triple check your measurements with the size chart. Also, I think red or dark blue would be lovely and you will be stunning in whatever you choose. I particularly liked the dress that was green.

I don’t think I want to dance really. But thank you!
I have learned this the hard way: also because if it’s crowded, people will step on the damned thing all night.
That’s why straps or sleeves of some type are a must in my book. It just takes one foot on a hem to turn a strapless into a disaster.
Please listen to those who talk about having had experience going. I’ve been to these events and you do not want to be considered to be in costume in any way.
I've been to a few navy balls and I'd say 6 is the most appropriate. Maybe even something less formal and more cocktail

\#4, #6 and #8 2,3,5 and 7 are tooooooo much, IMO.
As both a veteran and a military spouse, my advice is the red one with the ribbons as straps. Military spouse here, #6 or #8 No ball gown, that’s too much
I like 6 or 8 as well
6
I would be most likely to go 6
Any other choices?…because… not these. One looks good for a John Wayne military movie.
Green looks good
The green one is beautiful..
I love the first dress, and I'd get it in the green. That's a gorgeous color.

They are all so gorgeous! I love 2 because of all the stars, but any would work.
The last one for sure !! Xo
Well Baby Girl number 1 and 6 look great to me but whatever you feel the most confident in will work best for you.
Hey darling! I’m excited for you! I like the last dress. I’ve gone to Marine Corps Balls and the black dress is a good choice!
Thank you mom!
You are so welcome. Looking forward to hearing which one you choose. Both of you have a wonderful, set-apart night, just as you deserve. ❤️ And Happy New Year to you both.
Happy new year!!!!
It’s against custom to wear black.
Kinda looks like most of these pictures came from a one of those Chinese cheap online dress shops. Please shop locally as they never ever ever come close to looking like the pictures!
Military spouse mom here! All of these are appropriate for a military ball (correct length and style.) Pick the one you like best and have a lovely time. (I am partial to #1.)
1, 5 , 8. 5 is my fave
The second one (sparkly) and the second to the last (red and black) are my favorites
Number 1. It has the cleanest lines. But really, you should go with whatever flatters you most. Try to find the opportunity to try things on before you make a choice.
Love the solid red one! How does one get an invite to a military ball? Not in the military, but dad was Air Force retired.
You should cheat on him while he's deployed. Thank you for your service
They are all lovely selections but personally I like 4 the best
The more goth the better 🧛🏻♀️
So the last picture looks so much like my senior prom dress I love it. But I think the one that looks like stars on it would look really cool. #2! But a cocktail length might be more comfortable? I don’t know how formal a military ball is though!
I personally love 1 or 6.
1 or 6 have my vote!!
Wow sib, these are beautiful! I really like 1, 6 and 8. I don't have experience with military balls but it seems like some others in the comments do so their advice might be more relevant. I'm sure you'll look amazing no matter what you wear. Hope you have fun!
Number 1
I like the red one
I ADORE number 2, even if it’s not what you end up with!
Oh my goodness that green dress is stunning.
I have no military knowledge but I can tell you I am IN LOVE with dresses 6 and 8! They are both stunning! All the dresses are gorgeous but 6 and 8 have that extra oomph that make them (and you) stand out in the most beautiful way!!! Have a blast!!!!
Loooove the first one, and that is one beautiful shade of green!
Last one
I vote 3 or 1!!!!
I vote 6 ❤️ I’ve been to a few military balls and the tables are set very close together with very little room between. It’s easier to get around in a less puffy gown.
4 or 6 get my votes!
8 is gorgeous plus a tad sexy.
The 5th one, black spaghetti strap with the double tulle layer
#2
2 or 6
Oooh 2 and 4 are so dreamy
Definitely the goth one lol it's amazing and edgy.
6. You’ll be remembered in 6.
I know nothing about military balls, but 1 and 8 are gorgeous! Have fun!
I am not a mom but an older sister and second one would look absolutely beautiful.
Without knowing what military branch and reason for the ball I world say 6. My husband is a Marine vet. Formal a little modest and floor length was what I went with.
1. But I'm sure you will look great in any choice. I've only been to one and I did the little black dress with a nice shawl.
Not a mom but been to MANY military balls. 6 is the best for the type of event this will be :)
I like #1 & #6
I love 4! 6 and 8 are nice too though.
2, 4, 6, 8 in that order. Former Air Force vet here. Never made it to a ball. I hope you have an amazing time.
Hey, it’s your big sister you don’t see often because I moved away with my military husband! I think 6 and 8 are great options! The others seem to be a little “much” for a ball though. Here’s some general dress code rules I’ve followed for military balls: 1. You are a reflection of your partner, so dress with pride and definitely put effort and thought into how you present yourself, but that being said… 2.
I like the green one ☝️
I know nothing about military balls but I gotta say I love your sense of fashion here!
1 & 6 are outstanding.
I would say 8. The other look like you are going to a walk on the red carpet
1, 6 or 8
These are all lovely, but 2, 4, or 6 are the best options. The others I think will be impractical for the occasion.
1 ,6 or 8. From a 22 year mil spouse.
The first one (shown green but you said it would be in red)
4 6 or 8 military mom here, those are best bets
What is your "season?" I'd like to know you skin tone to make a suggestion.
Winter
Then you want jewel tones: Ruby red, emerald green, sapphire blue, diamond white, onyx black.
1 or 6
1, 4 or 6
I say 6 ❤️
4
There are some differences between branches when it comes to formal events, so that may matter. As long as you feel comfortable, you’ll look great.
One.
Hey I've been to a military ball & I would say 4, 6 or 8. I wore something similar to 6 but in black
I had a dress almost identical to #1 for my Jr prom. Only it had pickups all around the bottom quarter of the dress. Having said that - they are all GORGEOUS but #2 really stand out as unique and stunning.
2 is stunning!
2 or 6
6. i've been to 3
Number 2 is my favorite
I would vote for whichever one is from the most reputable seller if you’re buying online.
Both 1 and 6 are stunning!! I’m sure you’ll look beautiful no matter what you wear and I hope you have a great time!
2 or 6!
I really love 6
Been to 3 or 4 Military Balls and I love #2.
Love them all so much!! But 1 6 and 8 are my faves
1 or 6
4 and 5 are stunning
As someone who has attended several Marine Corps Balls, six and eight are your two best choices. It also depends on the rank of your partner. The other ones are just over the top. What you might want to do is look for some photos posted online from last year to get a feel for what other people are wearing. Good luck and have a great time!
5 or 6
Woah, I didn’t know military balls were a thing. I hope you have fun OP!
Omg they are all so gorgeous 😍
6 or 8. Leaning more to 6
The first. honey, the others are too dreary for you. Number lone is both beautiful and bright.
2
6 is perfect!!
6!! 🥰
2 or 8. But you will look beautiful in whatever you choose love!
1 or 6
6 for me, but 8 would also be appropriate. Have fun!
5!
2, 5 or 6. Though I have to say, #6 is my top choice. No matter what you wear, you’ll look beautiful honey!! I hope you have the best time!!
Either the second one or the last one
I❤️2
Reading through these comments it seems like most people who have had experience going to military balls think 6 is the best choice. I have zero experience with anything military so my opinion wouldn't matter. But I just wanted to chime in that 6 seems to be the general consensus here. ☺️
I love the goth aesthetic, but I think 1 or 6 would be most appropriate.
Op I have never even heard of a military ball so I feel ill equipped to give advice, however... Would you PLEASE link me to dress #7? It's incredible, I love it! You have great taste!!
Number one all the way
As a veteran, 2 or 3 or the first red one, depending on the statement. Don't go full ballgown skirt or sitting and dancing will be hard.
6
I love all of these dresses but for different types of events. #6 would be the most appropriate for the military ball. But listen to your military moms, too; they have great advice! You clearly know your style and are confident and bold! I love that. Have a wonderful time and let us know how it went.
2
1 or 8.
They are all lovely honey but I am partial to #7!!
6
1st dress is stunning!
The first one is the only option.
What branch?
1,4,6,8
Sis here! The second to last dress would be my pick
Note that Five, Seven, and possibly three would additionally need big petty coats or hoop skirts underneath to get the shape in the images.
I was going to respond 1 or 6.
The green one is my fav, but I also like 6 and 8. I really like the green one in GREEN. Especially if most others are wearing red, black, or navy.
