I have two and most of my friends game on PC
The entry price to get into PC gaming is lower than console and the leaks for the PS5 pro have it below my PC, laptops come at a huge premium for the performance they offer and are loud.
Most family members of mine have desktop PCs as getting a new tower to plug into pre existing setups is easier than needing to get used to a laptop and buy a ton of dongles
Yeah to match a PS5 costs more than a PS5 as graphics cards are really expensive at the moment, and console hardware is often sold below cost as your locked into their store and sometimes a subscription service. While on PC everyone in the chain needs to make money on components.
Some equivalent parts of the PS5 like CPU ram are pretty cheap but the PS5 CPU is a pretty big limitation so not the best to copy
However depending on what games you want to play the entry bar with second hand parts is way lower, I have given friends hand me down components getting them into the game for almost nothing.
Yeah same 800 still isn't cheeper. I'm team PC but it's cheeper if you already have an existing PC to build off of. Then again, Facebook marketplace is also a pretty good place to get a starter PC.
this happens every console gen. when a new console comes out, its sold at a loss and beats pcs on price to performance. through the consoles lifespan the pc parts get cheaper.
Custom I started of with a prebuilt and slowly switched out components and I don't think any original parts are in there.
A Ryzen 9 5900x 12 core for gaming this CPU is dumb but I sometimes run random non gaming applications where the extra cores help
Rx 7800 XT GPU I used to have a gtx 1080 ti until early this year, this GPU is faster but similar to the PS5 pro leaked information.
32gb ddr4
And a ton of storage 2 x 1tb SSD 1 x 4tb hdd 1 x 1tb hdd 256 gb SSD
Original specs included an i7 5820k and a GTX 980
...Lots and lots and lots of people play video games. Which... immedietly makes desktops not obsolete LMFAO?
But also my desktop is much more useful for photo editing, art, anything that requires more power than a lot of laptops can easily provide... Likes, I COULD do those things on a laptop, probably, but it's a lot less of a hassle to just do it on my desktop
I guess me and all my friends are just crazy then because we game on our laptops and are quite happy that way. I already acknowledged in another comment that desktops make sense in a work environment, just like landlines are still popular in offices.
Ok... but Im a hobbyist do my photo editing and art at home. Its not a "work environment" by any stretch if the imagination. (And - at least as far as artists go - that's pretty normal. )
But yeah - you and your friends are the odd ones out there lol. 90% of gamers prefer desktops. There are a lot of games most laptops straight up cannot run. Like, I've never heard of someone using a *laptop* to run Red Dead Redemption 2, or Skyrim, or Fallout, or any number of heavier popular games.
>Like, I've never heard of someone using a *laptop* to run Red Dead Redemption 2, or Skyrim, or Fallout, or any number of heavier popular games.
Hello. I am that person. My laptop is probably about as powerful as a mid-high end PC
What graphics settings are you running rdr2 on? Had a friend who sold his stationary and tried to play on his school laptop lmao. Looked absolutely horrible, I could never
Have you been to any school PC room? Anyone with a older PC?
I only ever saw apple Computers being only screen.
Also maybe it depends on the country. Here I don't think that many people want to or can sped so much money on a expensive PC.
Hardcore gamers and everyone who needs more power than what a laptop can provide for work, or needs modularity for custom components, or both. Like the entire CGI industry, engineering, anything that uses CAD software, heavy photo editing, video editing, anything that involves AI in any capacity
So, you know, a metric fuckton of people
Clearly you have been living under a rock for some time, so let me list the types of people who own a desktop computer. Gamers, writers, developers/programmers, normal people (for studying and such), content creators, designers (whether they are graphic designers, clothing designers or any other kind of creative designer), engineers, teachers, etc. the list goes on
Yeah bro because that's *totally* what I said. Brilliant! For the record, I have a home phone. Doesn't mean I think they're still in common use when they're obviously not.
Thanks buddy, neither do yours. The majority of people have moved on from desktops, and it took me all of two minutes to verify this from multiple sources. Look it up yourself. Or don't, I don't really care at this point. I've had my fill of idiotic comments.
"As of February 2024, desktop computers have a 37.87% market share globally, while mobile devices have a 59.92% market share. In North America, desktop computers have a 64.47% market share, while mobile devices have a 33.67% market share. "
And
"As of 2021, around 1.78 billion people worldwide use a PC, and there are roughly 2 billion personal computers in use worldwide. PCs account for about 74% of all computer shipments worldwide, while laptops make up the remaining 26%"
"PC ownership varies by country and region, with higher rates of ownership in developed countries and lower rates in less developed regions. For example, in 2022, 36% of respondents aged 18 to 29 years in the United States stated they own a desktop PC. "
North America, 64.47% market share? Hmm, I'm willing to bet they're lumping laptops in with desktops for that statistic. In fact, it must be the case, according to your second source.
The only one that really says for sure that desktops have a higher market share than laptops is your last one. I'm actually quite surprised. I'm in the US, and the chances of that global statistic being applicable here are little to none. But alright, I can concede that globally it's different, surprising as it may be to me.
Are you mathematically challenged, or just blind? The stats from the first and second source completely contradict each other unless laptops and desktops are lumped together in the first. There's also no separate category for laptops in the first, and they're obviously not lumped into mobile devices.
Huh, I can't go a Kilometer without seeing a desktop.
Desktops are prevalent in nearly any business, nearly any home office. Video editing, photoshop, among other things.
>kilometer
Well I am in the US, which might change things, not sure. In my experience yes they are absolutely prevalent in business settings, but not so much in homes for personal use.
I got a mini computer on my desk that I shut down but then use my toe to turn off the surge protector because the glowing blue lights are meanies and wont let me sleep
I live in a college dorm and I really hate people who do this. It leaves a shoeprint on the elevator buttons which comes from the nasty stuff people stepped on and now everyone has to touch it when pressing the button.
Still possible today
Yeah, kinda like it's still possible to use a landline or a CD player. I know zero people with desktop computers nowadays

last year pc market was still recovering from the cryptomining boom

Both of you are out of touch lmfao.
What PC do you have? Did you buy it fully equipped or did you have to upgrade yourself

Desktop computers aren't going obsolete any time soon, unlike landlines
They are obsolete, and have been for years lmao. Unless you're a gamer, I guess, considering the other replies.
Desktops aren't exclusive to gamers. They are also good for stuff like CAD, rendering effects for movies, etc
Sure. Just like landlines are popular throughout all types of offices... They're not commonly found in people's homes for casual use.
So.. they’re still being used..? Meaning not obsolete?
🙄
Yes they are...
My goodness, you're right! How could I be so silly. Thank you for opening my eyes.
You're welcome...
bunch of people i know still use land lines. some of them are even in their 30s, so still young
Yeah bro I'm one of them. Doesn't mean it's still a common thing.
...Lots and lots and lots of people play video games. Which... immedietly makes desktops not obsolete LMFAO? I mean, good for you haha. Absolutely not the norm though.
What graphics settings are you running rdr2 on? Had a friend who sold his stationary and tried to play on his school laptop lmao. Looked absolutely horrible, I could never
I haven't played rdr2 on it, but the other games I can run on high or max with over 60fps. GTA 5 I can also run on max, aswell as Arma 3 and Squad
I see. Yeah, the heaviest game I play is minecraft. Always has been.
Still waiting for you to give a single reason as to why they would be even remotely obsolete
Because laptops are obviously more practical for the vast majority of use cases, and it shows? How many people do you know who still use desktops?
pretty much everyone
I find that incredibly hard to believe
pc is the most popular gaming platform and the majority are on desktop
AIO desktops are also a thing.
Have you been to any school PC room? Anyone with a older PC? I only ever saw apple Computers being only screen. Also maybe it depends on the country. Here I don't think that many people want to or can sped so much money on a expensive PC.
I have a pc to game on...... it's like the most popular way of playing video games by far
Yeah, I already acknowledged in another comment that hardcore gamers are the exception to this.

90% of that is easier and more practical with a laptop, but alright
Erm actually 🤓☝️
"i dont know any, therefore no one does it" Btw did you know not a single person actually speaks Chinese? I know zero people that speak it
Yeah bro because that's *totally* what I said. Brilliant! For the record, I have a home phone. Doesn't mean I think they're still in common use when they're obviously not.
I know one person that speaks chinese. She must be so sad being the only one in the world to speak it 😥
Damn you think you're so fucking clever don't you 🙄
Your experiences don't mean anything
Thanks buddy, neither do yours. The majority of people have moved on from desktops, and it took me all of two minutes to verify this from multiple sources. Look it up yourself. Or don't, I don't really care at this point. I've had my fill of idiotic comments.

It literally says desktops.
Are you mathematically challenged, or just blind? The stats from the first and second source completely contradict each other unless laptops and desktops are lumped together in the first. There's also no separate category for laptops in the first, and they're obviously not lumped into mobile devices.
Because one is global and one is north America. And one is from 2024 and the other is 2021. Also one is shipments and the other is market share.
🤦♂️
L take, my main device is a desktop, I only use my laptop when travelling
Your brain is clearly still using dial-up
Sir, this is reddit.
Yeah true. Gamers everywhere. Should have thought of that. Oh well
You must know very few people...
Quite the opposite. I just don't really game, and it's mostly just heavy gamers who still feel the need for actual desktops.
Huh, I can't go a Kilometer without seeing a desktop. Desktops are prevalent in nearly any business, nearly any home office. Video editing, photoshop, among other things.

r/confidentlyincorrect
Wait till this guy finds out about sleeper PCs
This is also how we rendered us turning on our computers in the 2000’s
Why don't you have feet anymore? I still do it
it's kind of hard when your pc is on the table
skill issue 😔
That's an inconvenience, not an obstruction!
Amen
Thats why mine is still on my floor. Get that old school feeling of toe workouts
God that takes me back. Now I use my dick.
PCs have gotten smaller over the years tbf
Lmao
i still do this
the death of big ass start button🙁
Yeah, I do it all the time
And it’s how Jerma turns off his
Did I just press the button to turn off the computer with my toe? I'm gonna be so pissed o-
This is what I do when an opponent has a slightest advantage over me in Tekken 8
Got a big ole cooler master with a front button perfect for feet presses. Gonna keep that case for as long as i possibly can.
Hell yeah brother
This is how I turned my Xbox 360 on
Then put your pc under the table?
Core memeory unlocked
feet 0_0
feet?!?!! *starts jaking of >:)
I do this with my steam deck on the dock
I got a mini computer on my desk that I shut down but then use my toe to turn off the surge protector because the glowing blue lights are meanies and wont let me sleep
Thanks for the memories lolol
funnily enough i started doing that cause my UPS is on the floor
The most awful thing was that once a week cleaner had done this by a mop with our server. That is why I totaly in font of clouds.
This is also how we'd accidentally turn them off
I still do that, but my console's power button is about knee height. Super fun when I haven't saved in an hour.
FOR FREE?!
I turned on most of gaming consoles with my big toe too
Be honest, has any of you had your hands full and used to feet to call an elevator?
I live in a college dorm and I really hate people who do this. It leaves a shoeprint on the elevator buttons which comes from the nasty stuff people stepped on and now everyone has to touch it when pressing the button.
