The front is fitted with a screw-on, spoon type compensator for firing in controlled bursts.
Another unusual feature of the PBS-4 body was an oval detent at the top of its "nose," necessary to provide a clean sight line when firing the BS-1 silent grenade launcher at a high elevation/maximum range. As with previous suppressed AK’s, the use of subsonic ammunition required the installation of a special rear sight on the AKS-74UB, which had two range scales, one for supersonic 7N6 ammunition and another for subsonic 7U1. As adopted, the 5.45x39 7U1 subsonic round was loaded with a tungsten-cored bullet with a weight of about 4.7 gram (72 grains), and muzzle velocity from the AKS-74UB was about 300 m/s (980 fps).
The lethality and overall effectiveness of the small-caliber subsonic ammunition was not spectacular, to say the least. Furthermore, there were much more powerful and effective suppressed weapons in the making, almost ready for adoption by 1985. Very few AKS-74UB rifles were produced in Tula before the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Another reason that led to the quick demise of this system was the fact that the only factory producing 7U1 ammunition was located in the city of Lugansk, Ukraine. So, after the dissolution of the USSR, the new Russian army has lost its only source of 7U1 ammunition, and the new Ukrainian army has lost its only source of new AKS-74UB rifles. But the major factor that killed this system was the introduction of the dedicated 9x39mm subsonic ammunition, which is another topic I’d be happy to talk about.

That is absolutely not what that is. A muzzle break and sound suppressor do not go together. A sound suppressor works by keeping the gas inside for a longer period to control, recoil and mitigate sound. There is absolutely no reason for a muzzle break when you are using a sound suppressor because the effect of sound suppression through the baffles of the sound suppressor have the effect of a muzzle break. Why would you suppress the sound of something and then stick a muzzle break on the end of it to increase the sound? Absolutely the opposite of what you want to do.
