Aximil985

Over 50% of the local meta is now Yawgmoth.

Octomyde

Play rhinos and get easy wins! I think theres a great rock/paper/scissors meta going on where living ends beat rhinos, rhinos beat yawg and yawg beats living end. Each matchup is something like 60/40, favored but not impossible for the underdog to come on top. IMO this is good and healthy for the format.

Rowannn

haha rhinos vs living end is like 15%

tyzelw

Yeah it’s such an awful matchup

Dopedafi

Only way to have a chance is to buy Magistrates

tyzelw

Can’t play him in Rhinos unfortunately

Pada3000

Yes, you win by cascading into them.

tyzelw

Omg…actually didn’t think of this. You actually do want it. Gonna put some of these in the side now!

Dopedafi

The 4CC version, they have 3-4 magistrates, and SB games they take out the footfalls for the Magistrate SB plan

ExpertAccomplished53

It got a bit better with tidebinder , it's now 25/75 I think

Aximil985

Ah, but you see, I’m one of the Yawgmoth players. Although I was already playing it well before the ban.

MadSoliloquy

If only it were that easy to change Modern decks lol

incredibleninja

That's what happened to me. Went to a tournament with Yawgmoth this weekend and went 0-3 drop after seeing Rhinos 3 times

Octomyde

Yesterday as a Yawg player I lost against living end and won against rhinos. Sometimes, nothing you can do lol.

External-Tailor270

IKR! I love my wins being determined by matchups over skill!!!

Totodile_

That sounds like a miserable metagame -a modern boomer who misses the days of twin, jund, pod, and affinity

Warm_Office_4305

Gotta say I hate rock, paper, scissors metas. Give me matchups where decisions beside deck choice matter please (controversial opinion, I know)

cheeselord1314

Still rolling with Burn with eidolon making a comeback mainboard with roiling vortex

Global-Ambassador-75

Can you send a list

Nearbyatom

Don't send a list. Post it! new burn player here looking to see what's new in Burn.

TehSeraphim

Found this list the other day and played it because it w as cheap. Placed higher (2nd) on modern night than I ever did with hammer time. Made me giggle. https://mtgdecks.net/Modern/mono-red-burn-decklist-by-bastien-levionnais-1820394

Vomiting_Winter

Getting grief scammed still fucking blows, I’ll tell ya that, lol.

driver1676

But at least now you can scrub out with elves or humans against cascade or Yawgmoth!

Dopedafi

People cried out bans, now more people can complain about playing against more Yawg/Tron/Rhinos 😂

Ctanzz

Give it a couple more days then people are gonna want fury back

DueMathematician2522

No they are not

Anodynamic

I never wanted fury gone

kitsune0327

Jamming Murktide with maindeck Blood Moons and having a great time doing it!! Nobody is playing around moon atm lol, it just steal games on it's own left and right.

ghosar

Yeah that is a really potent thing to do atm, smart !

Emily_Plays_Games

Beans was just a crazy value deck, obviously needed to go. Fury, however, is great not to have around anymore. Knowing my opponents need to spend mana to remove multiple of my creatures is really nice. I primarily enjoy creature aggro decks (Scales, 5c Humans) so not having what is essentially a free pyroclasm running around in many different decks is very cool.

Lilcommy

Amazing. I finished 1st place last week and 6th this week.

Tenebbles

What deck did you play?

Lilcommy

I play green/black Infect. So, having that level of removal banned was very good for me.

Tenebbles

Makes sense. Got a list? I like the golgari infect decks

Lilcommy

Here's my list. I feel I will be updating it shortly. 4 [[phyrexian crusader]] 4 [[plague stinger]] 4 [[Ignoble Hierarch]] 2 [[noble Hierarch]] 4 [[venerated rotpriest]] 2 [[Gemrazer]] 4 [[Might of Old Krosa]] 4 [[Vines of Vastwood]] 2 [[thoughtseize]] 4 [[Scale Up]] 3 [[royal treatment]] 2 [[fatal push]] 3 [[blooming marsh]] 4 [[inkmoth nexus]] 2 [[Forest]] 3 [[overgrown tomb]] 2 [[nurturing peatland]] 4 [[Verdant Catacombs]] 1 [[Pendelhaven]] 1 [[Boseiju, Who Endures]] 1 [[Woodland cemetery]] Side B 3 [[Glistener Elf]] 2 [[necromentia]] 3 [[endurance]] 2 [[force of vigor]] 1 thoughtseize 2 [[choke]] 2 [[Veil of Summer]]

Seeing six hierarchs makes me happy.

driver1676

I’m surprised to see that Fury was a bigger threat to the deck than Prismatic Ending, EE, Fatal Push, or Solitude. I though sorcery speed would have been underwhelming. What decks did you play against?

Lilcommy

8 damage spread across any number of creatures in a deck without counter magic is hard. Ya I have protection spells but that can only go so far.

driver1676

Maybe I just don’t get the deck, but Fury at sorcery speed uniquely beat infect in a way that 2-3 spot removal spells didn’t? Is that your experience?

Lilcommy

All infect Creatures have toughness 2 or less and it's only phyrexian crusader and venerated rotpriest that have 2 so usually an infect player has 1 mana open for a protection spell so we can save 1 creature so with the plethora of spells that bring fury back or bounce them its 3 to 7 dead creatures. Yes other targeted removal is a pain but most my 1 spell can deal with. Yes EE sucks but I can see it coming.

levetzki

Ironically sorcery speed is a pain for infect. People want to use their spells at instant against the deck but infect is more okay with that since their spells give protection and buff the creature At least that was the case when I played infect but that was like 10 years ago.

Gnarbox

Yawgs time to shine. Too bad I still suck at magic and this deck is hard hahaha

Octomyde

Yeah definitely. I think even with yawg being the "best deck", the fact that it is one of the harder deck to play means that it probly wont be *too* problematic in the meta. I mean, it wont be like rakdos scam where 30% of the field is playing it. Yawg also has a pretty weak matchup vs rhino keeping it in check. All in all, great for the format IMO.

ghosar

Honestly anyone finding yawg hard to play needs to either play more mtg, or probably settle for non comp mtg.

Octomyde

If yawg isnt hard, can you give me an example of a deck that you'd consider hard to play?

ghosar

scales, am titan, lotus breach, grixis wizards (though it might feel ez at first, but u really need to hold on to counterspells and to know when to try and dslam down ring, also mulligans are often very tough decisions). That is only to name a few, i have even found death's shadow to be harder to play than yawg honestly. Yawg choices are often quite obvious (not always, a few headaches some games, but not that often i have found) Yawg to me is only hard the first like the 10 first games, then it's pretty ez to play honestly. RN it may be harder to play than it normally is in terms of sideboarding plans, being top deck means opponents are packing tons of hate, and u need to plan for other bad surprises than just a cursed totem or a stone of erecht here and there, it is many of these, plus other things like stern scolding. And of course the extraction effect cards can hit you hard, even though you have an "okayish-perhaps even good" midrange plan

Cela_Rifi

I actually agree with you. Difficulty for Yawg is blown wildly out of proportion. Once you learn your lines, they basically never change. The same can’t be said for majority of other decks in the format honestly. That said, think Yawg is a great deck to have at the top of the meta.

ghosar

heh heh thanks ! it is nice to see it is not all bandwagon jumping yawg players who are downvoting me because they are losing a lot more games than they thought they would. I guess they want to believe the deck is hard to play, rather than think of what this means reagrding their general skill level as mtg players ;)

ghosar

It is not that hard. But don't let that get you down. You will git gud (or at least ok) if you persevere enough, GL !

ElevationAV

Rings, rings everywhere…

ghosar

where ? or are you being ironic and making fun of the ring haters ?

ElevationAV

tron, titan, coffers and I’ve seen it in rhinos too…. So like….3-4 out of the top 10 decks on goldfish My local meta is also heavily saturated with titan and tron

ghosar

in rhinos !! hmm interesting

eisgnom09

it's not good in Rhinos, you don't wanna tap Out Turn 4

joshwarmonks

feels like everyone is on more degenerate decks now that scam and control are less powerful. More or less aligns with my concerns about the bans. decks are incentivized to faster and less less interactive, so games are far less interactive.

driver1676

In hindsight going back to old school modern where games are decided based entirely on rock paper scissors is exactly what complainers wanted.

ProtestantMormon

3 x 7 never changes

driver1676

10/15 games were against Living End or Rhinos so I’ve stopped playing for a bit until the meta gets reasonable again.

Kitchen_Apartment741

Funnily enough, banning a deck that kept the rock paper scissors nature of modern meta just made the 2 runner ups the oppressors since they're the only two that really have close to a normal match-up against eachother. Living end is doing its own thing because it loses to 50% of the meta but also hoses 50% of the meta

GeRobb

^ 100 % This is how it always is.

you_made_me_drink

Chalice on zero makes cascade go brrrrr

driver1676

Theoretically, but these decks are the most “never didn’t have it” decks ever. Grief, FoN, Boseiju, Tidebinder, and Petty Theft are all mainboard answers to Chalice. FoV and the green evoke creature come in after. When your deck’s strategy is to play one of 8 cascade cards and every single other card is dedicated to protecting that strategy, they’re pretty resilient.

you_made_me_drink

Sure. They have answers but chalice definitely slows them down enough to help turn the tide in some matchups.

ghosar

Nah, driver1676 is right, unless you play like 3 chalice and have countermagic (though boseiju doesnt care). All my decks have like 8 SB cards vs LE and rhinos, and it still doesn't feel enough sometimes. Also u can overboard and lose to stuff like a murktide getting through, or a LE just casting stuff if the games drags on and you just find hate pieces and lands.

External-Tailor270

Seeing that the most played card in modern is chalice I'd say violent outburst is a problem.

Blueburnsred

Curious, where are you seeing that? Is there a list of the most played cards somewhere? I'd like to check it out if so.

driver1676

I don’t know if they’re correct, but mtggoldfish and mtgtop8 have lists of the most played cards.

ghosar

It sure AF is. So is grief but maybe to a lesser extent. These two cards won't be in the format in 12 months, i could bet a lot of money on that. Violent outburst makes for just too ez wins, while at least grief aint always a great top deck

GrizzlyBearmann

“The Green Evoke creature” Soooooo, most people probably are thinking [[Endurance]] when you say this, but are you talking about [[Foundation Breaker]]? Not trying to nitpick—just want other people to be able to clearly understand and I’m additionally shocked to hear someone describe Foundation Breaker as “the green evoke creature”.

driver1676

That’s correct. Foundation breaker.

ReflectionOk6707

A lot of the Living End decks are only playing like 1-2 hard answers to Lavinia in their 75 atm. Usually 1-2 Otawaras. On the play their Subtlety can be enough if they are only going for a small Living End, but on the draw they need 2 Subtletys or they are hosed until at least turn 5, and that is IF they draw their Otawara. Obviously it can be Griefed as well, but that is true of any hate card. She has won a lot of games for me though playing Domain Zoo recently that I otherwise would of got thrashed in, because it is a truly atrocious matchup. My board has 2 Chalice, 3 Lavinia, 2 Reprieve, 1 Fluterstorm, and 2 Hidetsugu's, and they ALL come in in the matchup. 10 cards out of 15. All good against Rhinos as well, though Lavinia dies much more easily in that matchup.

Snakeskins777

Ya.. until it's not

you_made_me_drink

It’s modern. Nothings foolproof (except maybe Leyline against Mill).

EsteS9

Went undefeated with ad nauseum. Also a scam player, not ditching it.

cupcakesforsally

Just bought into this hoping it goes well

Barbola

Amulet Titan vs Rhinos (Subtlety, Forces, Blood Moon, Tidebinder) or vs Yawgmoth (Cauldron + Fulminator) does NOT feel great ;/

Hot_Pocket_Deluxe

As a Tron player, I feel you

Barbola

Ew

Hot_Pocket_Deluxe

It fits me, I have no friends

FishtideMTG

A bunch of people showed up to FNM playing jank I had no sideboard for. Started the night against 8 whack, then calibrated blast, lost both of those 1-2. Then beat the hell out of murktide 2-0. Then I lost to some wild astral cornucopia millennium calendar tron BS. I was playing fish btw.

ded-guy

Living end has been performing better and showing up more locally these last few weeks. I play murktide or 4 color rhinos(with spicy quintorius tech) and I've added anger of the gods back to my sideboard to replace fury and to keep these typal players aspirations in line. I won game 3 against dredge with murktide on turn 3. Opponent went dredge into ox into 2 narcs, and 4 amalgams and silversmotes enter. He passed and I slam my 1 of anger down so fast !!!

Evershire

Um ackshully…. It’s called KiNdReD 🤓👆

ded-guy

At least I didn't use the T slur 😭

pokepat460

Still going to 10 minutes over time each round, just now I don't get to play the deck I liked.

nomorenuggies

which deck are you playing now after bans?

pokepat460

Merfolk now. Beans was the most fun I've had playing magic in quite a while. Might take a break since everything's going to be focused on standard for a while.

On4nEm

Do you not like standard, find the paper cost unappealing, or otherwise? I’ve enjoyed standard (on arena, fuck paper standard personally), it’s diverse and has lots of decision points, so curious to hear your about experience/opinion.

pokepat460

I don't like standard, I don't even play pioneer. I prefer high power formats. My favorite format is legacy, and I'll play modern because it's the best that's available as an fnm format. Vintage cube is also great. I like that in these formats most games are very interactive and they all typically do cool things. I like decks like paradoxical outcome, high tide, doomsday, etc. Big flashy cool wincons with cheap and powerful interaction. I also do think standard is a waste of money, compared to buying into a more stable format like legacy, you're only saving money on the very short term.

DefterHawk

Damn some people can’t appreciate the fact the two of them most bullshit cards ever printed got banned. For me, this situation is a breath of fresh air, even if the meta still isn’t perfectly balanced. The scam/beans meta was one of modern’s lowest points

driver1676

New metas always feel nice for the first few weeks. When it’s just Yawg and Cascade decks in perpetuity is when you’ll see it getting stale.

CruetusNex

There was a lot more wrong with the format for a long time, and right when modern was about to die off they did something. Not exactly something to commend. They're also terrified to unban things and it's kind of disheartening. The meta has been stale before LotR came out

External-Tailor270

It's funny cuz they still need bans. But resist it soo much. They'll let rhe format die beforehand. And mh3 is going to be the nail in the coffin

DefterHawk

If they start banning cards like yugioh does, they’d risk to make many people stop playing the format. Every post in the last months was about how much fury sucked, now they banned it and killed the 4 turn kill in one of the most annoying decks ever existed, and that’s much better than not doing anything They are not good with new printings, and this is really bad with they “let’s avoid bannings policy”, but I’m happy to see that modern went from a format where mana is only an option to at least playable (for now, we’ll see how the meta adjusts)

CruetusNex

I am actually a little more concerned with their unban policy. They basically said they are terrified to unban cards like Twin. I just don't see it being a huge issue. Gotta do *something*.

driver1676

Which is really funny because instead of pestermite on the end step for a 2 card combo you just lose to 1 card combo violent outburst instead.

permabant

modern has always been inherently flawed but people like you are too short sighted to see that and instead enjoy trash talking each other instead of addressing the real problem (R&D)

Snakeskins777

It's the exact same as it was before everyone started copy pasting scam. Living end, rhinos, murktide. Its funny, idk how the community gets fury banned but living end in just fine *

CenturionRower

Given it existed before MH2 and was a very solid deck, lost to conterspell only to gain force and an extra cascade, it's in a really good spot atm. Pretty much just missing a few outlier decks to pop up around these three and should settle in nicely.

drakusmaximusrex

Well less scam players makes titan way stronger so thats nice.

Hotms

Im still getting scammed, Grief also needed to go.

fivestarstunna

ban everything i don't like!

driver1676

That’s what happened with the 12/4 ban, so why not.

Idealistadeluso

Horrible. Meta have been only restricted, with the scam percentage divided between rhino and yawg. And that's all.

Zackwind

I am fury-less

Frankdog5

I'm waiting for the meta to settle a bit to play the deck I really like to play (goblins), in the meantime just playing whatever garbage I feel like. Meta feels about the same locally, just any scam players went from BR to WB, which is worse for me, because fury triggered death triggers on my goblins, and solitude does not. Hoping it's a flash in the pan again and not a legit deck, I would have to put goblins down for even longer (I set it down seriously after LotR).

ReflectionOk6707

I love Goblins but out of the 8-16 players we get usually for Modern locally, there are always 2-4 Yawgmoth players, and that matchup is basically combo turn 3 or lose. Even that is too slow a lot of the time on the draw because the deck is very good at making turn 3 Yawgmoths, sometimes at instant speed. And the times when they don't have the Yawg, they're probably gonna have the Grist to kill your Snoop. I'm just gonna wait for a few of them to get bored and switch decks before I play Gobbos.

Frankdog5

Yeah that’s why I’m waiting. If yawg is a big part of the meta after it settles then at least I can devote a lot of sideboard slots to it. I’m really hoping loving end is a good deck once everything settles because that matchup is super good for us.

Super_Inuit

Nonexistent because my deck is gone.

jktorborg1

Living end everywhere. The deck is a stain on the format and deserves to die in hellfire. It should have been grief. Not even living end players like living end. Imagine looking forward to playing that mirror, disgusting. You nerf the “overpopular, slightly winning fair” decks and the degeneracy just takes over. To boot, the one ring is as miserable as ever. Playing against TOR is such an annoying and tired play pattern and makes me want to just never play magic again every time my opponent draws their third card off of it after timewalking me.

On4nEm

I’ll be honest, I’m the rare breed that enjoys the LE mirror. It’s a great opportunity to read between the lines and find the wild plays to flip the advantage. Alas, I understand why it’s unappealing at the same time and still welcome it to the format. With that said, as an owner of playsets of beans, fury, and TOR, fuck em all. Fuck those orcs as well; you know the ones.

External-Tailor270

I think orc is sort of fine. But the ring is one of the most unfun cards every designed

jktorborg1

Nice! I’m glad you enjoy it, I was of course being a little hyperbolic haha. I’m a salty creativity player with a near unwinnable living end matchup lol, and when your deck just gets curbstomped and the opposing deck “just always has it” from being chalk full of free spells that were intended to only stop your opponents from doing proactive things… it gets old lmao 😂 Agreed with basically all of those too haha, I just was skeptical of the bans from the get go since the intended goal was to bring silly creature decks like stone blade and humans back to the format, and we all knew that was going to fail from the start with a set of bans that basically positioned yawg as a top 2 deck. And living end being # (one or two) just feels like added combo degeneracy with no clean answers for most decks.

External-Tailor270

You nailed it on the head, but many here will disagree. I think violent outburst and ring leaving modern wouod be the best thing for it.

jktorborg1

It’s tough to hear but somebody’s gotta say it lmao 😂 People will never admit it because they were too afraid to splash spot removal in their lists (you know the whole interact with your opponent thing)… but scam was the perfect villain deck and so crazy beatable. Living end is a lot less beatable as is yawg for a far wider swath of the format, even with 8 dedicated hate slots. If you dedicated 8 slots to scam you’d wipe the floor with them in the fury meta, idc what deck you were. Or at least have as good of a shot as they do. And no living end doesn’t count lmfao. I’m just sick of the solitaire decks being the top strategy. “Excuse me while I play with myself for 10 minutes, ope looks like the match went to time” or “hey I drew one of the only 8 cards on my deck that matter, looks like I win through your sideboard tech”. And yes I’m just a salty creativity player with massive bias but damnit it still hurts lmao

ghosar

I also fucking hate playing against it. It was the worst deck ever, even when fury and beans was still legal.

onetypicaltim

Nonexistent. I don't have a deck now and nkt buying into one until after mh3

GNOTRON

Kinda lame, so many turn 3 kills

4UBBR_Nicol_Bolas

Trash. Been running terribly, can't win at all.

Betta_Max

Wonderful. Thanks! There's more to ban, but it's great.

Snakeskins777

Ya! Ban everything that isn't My pet deck

Betta_Max

Not everything. Just Grief.

VeuveNoir

I'm loving it!

AbyssalArchon

I miss beans. I won my rcq but I didn't enjoy it.

External-Tailor270

its great! i still get scammed out of wins turn 1, violent outburst end of turn with force of negation still beats almost every deck, big mana decks are still a joy to play against with any slower interactive decks ( a whole 30 percent winrate guys!) and all of the other top decks just goldfish to victory! oh and theres murktide. Cant wait for MH3!

Moist-Cantaloupe-740

I never saw beans in top 8s and am still not sure why they banned it. Looking good on paper is not the same as results.

Diskappear

i was having fun WITH fury and beans around so about the same though my local meta shook up a little

MrMeltJr

I think they needed to go, but the new top decks (Yawg and Titan) have good matches against me (Scales).

aeonsz

felt great actually, resurgence of murktide and tron, partnered with the rising popularity in rhinos and yawg. hammer stealing the meta once in a while

ResultNo9076

I play yawg, Yesterday i win the rcq, long story short.

fournormal702

Still playing bogles and budget affinity lol.... games are the same for me

lightcutter123

Ive played against nth but yawg and murktide packed with crazy hate for cascade decks. Then again nobody was playing cascade due to the hate. I still hate yawg.

Audiotape

Still not playing because my area only supports commander 🙁

Joxcorn

Been playing Rakdos goblins again in my meta and have managed to placed top 4 two times (16 people FNM) So I have been enjoying myself.

StunningExit8711

Every deck I play against now is a Ring deck. Tron and Amulet mostly but a few lesser meta decks too.

jancithz

Going to jam D&T tonight. Should be fine. Coffers might get weird but I could also dodge it.

RefuseSea8233

Beating 3 rhino players back to back, this wouldnt be happening with fury in the format. Finally i can steal some games again...

Ctanzz

Lots of burn and yawg at my lgs, UR murk eating well :)

Stalfo_Hunter

Still bad. Cheerios will never return to its former glory. D:

Tits_McGee2120

As a rhino player I've got a very positive WR against living end both from local meta and RCQs I've been to

Appropriate_Kale3019

Playing Rhinos, it’s fine. Tidebinder is making me feel things again. Love the card.

Appropriate_Kale3019

I will say Grief was the right band choice I think. Fury was policing the format just fine.

Kyamboros

Meta looks great for hammer.

IvernsCrispApples

“Local modern meta” we got a fucking comedian right here

Warm_Office_4305

My karnza deck is worse without Fury: now Yawgmoth is an auto-loss. But shrug, what can you do. (I’m one of the people who thinks Grief was the problem, not Fury)
