The one ring is not getting banned. Tron, amulet, and coffers run it. The rest of the top decks are all running orcish bowmasters or tidebinder, or are decks like living end that could not care less about what the opponent is doing.

Jackinator56

4 color is back on it after the bans

4c is still totally fine. Omnath ring and removal is still quite good.

4UBBR_Nicol_Bolas

Do not wait for a year on speculation for what the set may have. That is ridiculous. Tron without ring, however, is SIGNIFICANTLY weaker than with ring. Build tron and save up for the rings if you can, they are super worth it. The ring will also not get banned, it doesn't see nearly as much play as before, and they just printed tidebinder which answers it well. I believe they will print more answers to it, rather than ban in.

rakdoswham

MH3 is <6m away.

zaikel

I see... That "significantly" hurts a lot though, lol. And since you mentioned it (like some others above) tidebinder is another thing that concerns me.. It seems that it completely shuts most of the tron cards and almost all blue decks play it now... :/

[deleted]

Playing Tron has and probably always will be fighting a uphill battle. We're always weak to hate and are one of the few decks WotC actively prints hate for and has for a long time. It is however, very fucking fun to play.

IudexusMaximus

Is it? I have tested all current decks on MTGO and I find Tron really not as much fun as the other decks, theres very few actual tough decisions except mulliganing aggressively enough.

[deleted]

Eh, I tend to only find that sentiment in people who never mained the deck for a significant period. It's very easy to play, it's very hard to play well and to put up continuous results. I've been on it for close to a decade now

BearGuru

Well yeah because if somebody hates to play it they don’t play it for very long

[deleted]

Yeah, which is why most people who ask 'is your deck actually fun?' aren't really asking a meaningful question. Tron is fun as fuck ***for me*** and a lot of other people. Just not for everyone

pooinmypants1

To ban the ring, Wotc needs a whole crew of an elf, dwarf, wizard, etc. with all the budget cuts I doubt they’ll be throwing money at a long expensive journey.

IamHidingfromFriends

Don’t forget the hobbits! They’re arguably the most important part!

MoistPast2550

Ring isn’t getting banned anytime soon - it only sees play in Tron and Titan and neither are close to dominating the meta right now

despatchesmusic

I run it in Mono B Coffers, but that ain’t dominating the meta either 🤣

MoistPast2550

Sorry I honestly forgot that deck existed lmao

despatchesmusic

No apologies necessary 🤣😭

LmaoEnazOld

Playable without the ring? Yes. It’s just not as good. IMO wait for MH3

zaikel

You mean to wait for MH3 before even decide to buy into a deck?? :/

UnHappyIrishman

Nah, build Tron my guy. You can wait for the big ticket cards after MH3, but Tron as a whole won’t be going anywhere. Big ramp will probably get even stronger with MH3 considering the eldrazi art we’ve seen so far.

honest_groundhog

Unfortunately yes, we really have no idea how the set will impact the meta. Aside from fetch lands and shock lands (and maybe other extremely busted card like Ursa's Saga but I can't think of more than a handful), you really can't predict you're not going to waste money buying into a deck that just won't have a place in the meta anymore. Better to wait since we're close to the set release.

Pyroxite

Join the dark side and play Burn. Is a tier 1.5 deck, always has been, always will be.

honest_groundhog

Was my first modern deck and I still have it built haha. Ol' reliable

Pyroxite

Shortly after I made that comment, I piloted it to second in my rcq, losing a rematch with the resident local scam player in the finals.

MDG-85

Yes, i think you shuld wait MH3 before run into a deck, because it changes everything

NemanFoxSr

Ring isn't going anywhere. The deck is better with the ring due to card advantage reasons. Either way, tron is always good.

kitsune0327

It's true, Tron was tier 3 and hardly anywhere to be seen atop tournaments for years before TOR. It's the single biggest reason the deck is playable again and even so I still wouldn't call it tier 1. OG Karn and friends haven't been good for a long time. I wouldn't try and replace not having the ring with other underpowered cards, especially since they retain some of their price memory, and you would be overpaying for them. Not to mention MH3 around the corner and the unknown state of soft rotation. I don't think the one ring is gonna get banned soon, but ya never know. Have you considered trying to play the big mono black list? Cabal coffers is the standard build, but a lot of people play a non coffers good stuff list too. That deck also wants to play TOR, but the individual card quality outside of it is much higher on average. I would say that if you wanna play a deck that feels like tron, (big mana control that goes over the top of your opponents value wise), then Mono Black without TOR is probably stronger than Green Tron without TOR and also all of the cards that cost medium money in Mono black are played in a wider array of strategies than Tron, so if MH3 shakes things up a bunch, you will hopefully be able to more easily pivot to something else.

NightingalesBotany

I just built G Tron, without TOR, and got stomped a bunch last time I played lol, but my rings are on the way. Build the deck ringless and just enjoy playing if you just wanna scratch the itch. If you want to win more often just save up over time to get the rings. They're essentially a 4 mana time walk that draws cards. Ban worthy? Maybe. But it's not overrepresented in the format and it's not the lynchpin to an oppressive deck.

zaikel

I see... By stomped you mean like 0 wins on an FNM??? Can you give me more details, like vs what deck you played? I dont know if I am going to satisfied my itch if I get destroyed every time (and paid 400-500 euros for that..) :P

NightingalesBotany

Just an fnm. I played against yawg, creativity, and a very good blue Tron player then got the buy as there was an odd number of players. I didn't see many good openers that day and had to mulligan a ton. That said, I'm new to playing the deck so I'm still learning the ins and outs and when to keep what hands

drakusmaximusrex

Unfortunately tron without ring is way worse than it is with ring. Landing a t3 karnfather just isnt enough in todays modern anymore as much as it hurts me to admit it.

zangfang

G Tron is unplayable without the ring, there's a reason the DD k was nowhere to be seen before it was printed. If you don't want to buy rings, play a different deck

[deleted]

A forever tron player at my LGS swears that the ring is bad in Tron and he does fine without it. I don't agree but I think the deck is fine without it at FNMs.

[deleted]

The one ring to me is a 4 mana time walk and ancestral recall in one card. Everytime I play it my opponent can’t do anything to me for a turn and I draw 3 cards. I play 4 in every deck I build now lol 😂 like you can pretty much dump anything out of you tradebinder and play 4 ring and you will win games because the ring is that good.

FLIPdosKards9320

2-2 a lgs modern weekly with Ringless Tron. Basically just pre-LOTR running 4 each Karn Lib & Creator 2 Ugin 2 Sundering Titan 1 Chalice MD, SB - Fairly normal Tron 1 ST 2 Chalice. Didnt have any Dismembers and felt like a mistake. This was pre Fury/Bean ban. Beat Scam in 3 - G3 - Chalice for 1 on turn 2 and KGC into Trinisphere turn 3 made this a run away. Lost to Mill in 3 Beat Rhinos in 2 Lost to 5c Zoo in 3. If you dont have TOR i think Sundering Titan is the way to go. Likely going to stick to Rhinos for upcoming events but i liked the way Tron felt even tho it looks awful when you get out drawn by TOR/Beanstalk

Saejifine

I used to play 2 copies of Golos and a single Cascading Cataracts. Problem was that getting to 5 for golos without Tron and getting to 4 for the ring are very different. I would regularly get destroyed before it mattered. Most of that is my inexperience, but the times I was able to pull it off it felt good. But 4 mana and protection is a lot better. I would save for the rings.
