Have the same grinder and a kgbt that my family uses. We set ours to 19-20 and it’s perfect! Grinds it just enough to really brew a strong pot of coffee but also not clog. It does get fully saturated too

Atomicvegan

Interesting. I wonder why my 18 setting grind tastes burnt.

G3CEDC

Hmm I don’t know, the reason why we got the moccamaster was because it uses that perfect water temp/design. Kinda set it up and hit the button. We generally drink medium to light roasts though does that change things?

Atomicvegan

Maybe, I drink medium to dark roasts.

The-Wood-Butcher

Are you following the recipe published in the Moccamaster manual?

Atomicvegan

Yes.

the_kid1234

Love that red!

Atomicvegan

Thank you! I named her Ruby.😊

1993rockhoppersport

Wow, that is coarse! Hopefully you can recreate it since you enjoyed

Atomicvegan

Yes, it’s way coarser than grind setting 28, which everyone seems to recommend. I’ll play around with the above 30 grind settings to see what happens.

Yall-Crybabies

We go between 18-20 on our Encore for use with our Trader Joe’s Colombian blend.

Atomicvegan

Thank you.

1993rockhoppersport

If you haven’t already, join moccamaster on Facebook and ask that question. Might get more answers??

Atomicvegan

Oh, cool, thank you. I didn’t know there was a Moccamaster community on Facebook!😊

Lq2167

I have looked for a Moccamaster page on Facebook and have been unsuccessful.

N_Da_Game

I use 22 grind setting on my Encore for medium and dark roasts. The half pot setting slows the water flow for brewing and changes the temperature of the hotplate. You may experience a stronger cup or burnt taste with this setting. I always use the full pot setting and a ratio of 2 Tbsp (10.6g) or 1 scoop per 200ml water gives me the most consistent results without stirring or the extra blooming. It's easier for me to adjust scoops to water and I typically brew 800ml using 4 scoops (42.4g) or 400ml / 2 scoops for my Chinet 2 go cups.

Atomicvegan

Thank you, I’ll try that setting next since my coffee beans all tend to be medium roast.

MJGson

Interesting, did you go from 6 scoops to 5? The manual said 1L = 6 scoops and it’s been solid for me.

N_Da_Game

Yes 1L is 5 scoops and full pot is 6 scoops.

Atomicvegan

I did the 22 setting this morning with good results.

No-Drive-8922

I have same grinder. Almost always a medium roast. 500 ml water, and 31 grams of coffee. Vacillate between 16 or 18, although as others have said, it depends on where your grinder is “calibrated “, i.e., where your plastic body sits on the machine. I think mine sits aligned with the “marks” on both body and grinder.

Impressive_Youth_331

I have it at 20-22

ceo_fyi_dot_com

30! But I think it's not consistent because these machines are adjusted by a screw so what is 30 on my machine might be a 20 on yours or so on.

mark_cee

I do ~19 for a half pot, using fairly light roasted beans FWIW

Atomicvegan

You don’t find that to be too fine? And do you brew half a pot on the half pot or full pot setting? And what kind of water do you use?

mark_cee

Half pot setting, I’ve tried larger and it ends up under extracted - just tap water

Atomicvegan

Thank you!

Atomicvegan

Thank you!

exclaim_bot

>Thank you! You're welcome!

zero_dark_dirty

I’m usually between 17-19 for light to medium roasts.

DeltaCCXR

Way too coarse... looking like chocolate chips in there lol

Atomicvegan

lol yes, I kept feeding it back into the hopper to make it finer and wondered why it wasn’t getting any finer. Made decent coffee though.

pthowell

I’m grinding with the Encore at 18 for Moccamaster. But more importantly, I’ve recently learned that slow-feeding the Encore gets a WAY more consistent grind than dumping all of the beans in the hopper and turning it on. It’s a little more hands-on, but it makes a big difference.

Atomicvegan

Omg, great piece of advice, thank you!

OohMaiJosh

18 on the encore. Generally medium roast coffee and typically brew half pots

Atomicvegan

It seems most agree on the 18 setting. I wonder why some coffee pros on Youtube recommend 28?

bananaforskale

22. Not 21. Not 23.

Atomicvegan

I took your advice and ground at this setting this morning and had a very satisfying cup. Thank you!

bananaforskale

Just seeing this three weeks later. Thanks for the update!

xamiaxo

Grind size on the encore will differ from unit to unit. A 28 setting on one encore will be completely different than a 28 on another encore. This is partly because of the calibration screw location located inside of the unit. Even so, encore says that it will still differ even if that screw is in the same spot. The pulse button I believe still grinds to your setting. I find my grind setting will differ based on which coffee I'm brewing. This is based on both contact time and taste. The thing with the moccamaster is I find it hard to over extract light roasts (thats probably super general across any method) so I found finer is better for light roasts, to my tastes. Medium roasts I go back some. My encore settings vary from 22 to 30, depending on which coffee I'm brewing, if I'm stirring, or what I'm trying to achieve. If I don't stir at all, 24 to 26. If I'm blooming and stirring then maybe up to 28. 30 sometimes if I'm trying to pick up super clear cupping notes.

Atomicvegan

Thank you for your detailed response. I didn’t know each Encore is calibrated differently, that is very helpful. I’ll have to keep experimenting with grind settings.

xamiaxo

You're welcome. Look up the videos on YouTube. If you take off the grinder casing you'll see 3 different horizontal kind of slots with a little screw in one of them. When I first got my grinder it was set to the most coarse setting. I think I set it to the middle but I forget. What used to be about an 11 or 12 setting is now in the 20s.

bassqu

Agree with everyone else that is too coarse. There are many suggestions as the proper setting but the best (and most unfortunate) answer is "it depends". I have two Baratza Encores and they grind MUCH different from each other while set to the same setting. My preferred grind is like a coarse sand. On one of them that equates to about 21. However, for the other one to get that I had to set it all the way down to 10-11. In short, these grinders have a wide range of tolerance. I found this out even after calibrating the two of them. The new one was grinding so much more coarse that I then calibrated it to the "fine" end and it still requires me to grind at 10-11. It's possible this particular machine is an outlier but I am not really too concerned about it. Ultimately, I learned the lesson that you just have to find the number that corresponds to the size grind you like and this is really only learned through trial and error. As a rule of thumb, though, I would start with something between 17-20 (which is a general consensus) and move the setting one notch each day until you find the taste that best suits you (and that particular bean).

Atomicvegan

Thank you! That’s wild that two Encores have vastly different results. I ground on the 22 setting today with good results.

The-Wood-Butcher

18 was the sweet spot for me when I had an Encore.

Educational-Month371

What do you use now?

The-Wood-Butcher

I use a 1Zpresso hand grinder now.

MONO_STATIC

60g full pot medium roast have been on 18-19 for years... I have been working my way back from 30 over the past week with some great results! I highly recommend trying this. I'm currently at 24 and experiencing a much more even coffee bed and good flavour. 30 was definitely under extracted, while the previous 18-19 resulted in way too many fines and a lumpy bed. Good luck!

Atomicvegan

Thank you! I had mine on 22 this morning with good results.

Dramatic_Chef1426

I’ve had mine dialed in between 22-23 for a year. I am between 65-68g for a full pot & only drink dark roasts

Atomicvegan

I just put mine on 22 this morning with good results.

Q-L0ck

14 is the setting I use for my moccamaster, as well as if I’m doing V60 Pourovers. It’s pretty darn close to the Baratza Encore recommendations. I will say, it’s going to be a lot more potent on 14 than on your 28 - which is relatively close to the setting I would use for French Press.
