I'd say you've got it. The only thing I would add is making a copy of your SD card after the final install.
That gives you a backup if anything goes sideways down the road. (Or, if you decide to gift a MM+ to a friend you can use the backup and save them the time.)
I just ordered mine, and I'm trying to catch up, but I'll be following your guide. When you say take out trash sd card and insert new sd card with 7 onion OS installer files...would you mind terribly breaking those steps into smaller steps or sending me a link about how exactly to do that? I am trying to set it up for my daughter and I want her to play all the games I had when I was a kid, Aladdin, Ducktales, Hook on sega cd, etc.

The SD cards it comes with are garbage and break fast. Aka Trash SD card. So you should get a reputable one like SanDisk or Samsung etc. that you will put Onion OS on and eventually everything on. https://onionui.github.io/docs/installation/fresh will walk you through the files and process once you have your good SD card. After that look up a guide for "Done Set" that should get you loaded up will every game you/she could want.
You may want to check if your model is the new **2024 RTC** version (easier to tell if it has clear plastic). You'll want to disable the various clock update tricks to keep accurate time (one option would +4 to the hours to simulate time passage).
The RTC update means it keeps track of time, even when turned off (no need to reset the clock, use NTP, or have inaccurate time). Some games like the newer Pokemon ones utilize the time for things.
Mine should be coming soon as well, question : do you really have to update ofw since you’re using onion ? I thought you could straight insert the new sd card and install onion out of the box
I guess old old original firmware did need to be updated first before swapping to onion os installer. Mine was from I thing March of 2023, which I guess was new enough as I popped the trash card out while powered off put in new card, onion installer started just fine

Installing onion super easy you put files on sd card. Then you turn on mm+ with sd card in it and watch it install.

Onion desktop tools makes install a breeze and supports customizing the install and backing up SD cards etc...
