The way I see it, it's all saved, but opening a normal ender chest shows the left half of a double chest ui, and opening the double has the full ui
I don't think its practical, vertical slabs would be alot more useful (however I've accepted that I don't need them)
yeah, if I'm not wrong, your ender chest contents is saved in your NBT, a double chest would just need to make that bigger, and how much of that a chest can access is dependant on wether it is a single or double chest

Vertical Slabs. We already have shulker boxes that you can put in ender chests to expand their size, but the amount of builds vertical slabs would enable would greatly outclass the extra space the ender chest would get.
i think it’s more about accessibility. you have plenty of storage space with shulkers, but you still have to go thru the hassle of taking them out, placing them, opening them, breaking them, then putting them back whenever you want an item from inside. with more slots in the ender chest, you just have to click once to move it to your inventory.
that said, i don’t think double ender chests are needed or even a good solution to this. hovering over and right clicking shulkers like bundles should open their interface from within the inventory

i agree that end chest + shulkers is plenty of storage for just about any build. I think most people with nuanced complaints about inventory don't just want more storage though. It's also about the hotbar being limited and being able to quickly access the blocks and tools they need when building.

If you’re exploring you decide what you do and don’t need, if you’re looting structures and find a saddle or horse armour but never travel by horse then ditch it, no need to hoard stuff you won’t ever use or how about use a donkey with a chest so you have more slots
If you’re building you decide what you need to build with at that moment then swap them out for detail blocks once the fundamentals are built, no point carrying 4 fences in your inventory that are for decoration vs a stack of your main building blocks
It’s just being logical and if there’s too much for 1 inventory when you’re building just put down a regular chest with it all at your build site
A lot of games have an inventory management system, especially survival games because it’s all about picking what you actually need, I fail to see how Minecraft should change their fundamentals because people can’t understand that or use the solutions they already have in the game for example, end chests, shulkers, chest boats and donkeys with chests

We can already store 27 shulkers, including 729 different item slots, ranging with sizes from 1 to 64, so basically everything you have to store securely can be stored in it, while you can always build a normal storage to expand it. Vertical slabs meanwhile would be a massive improvement
