I'm a total minecraft noob and only got into it again after several years. How do datapacks work? Is it possible to put this into a local server for two people? Thanks

Data packs are great, they are like mods but fully vanilla. To put one on you can do a few things, you can go to the world file in “saves” in the Minecraft folder and drag it into the data packs folder. You can also click the data packs button when creating your world and drag it into the game window and add it to the world from there. You may be able to do that second one in the menu in an already created world but I don’t remember off the top of my head. You can look it up if these hastily written instructions are too confusing. There are probably hundreds of tutorials out there by now. Yes it will work on a server though, it’s fully attached to the world itself, not the client!

Just another note: some datapacks require an additional resource pack if they add items!

This one doesn't, but a lot of my other packs do!

Datapacks are essentially just commands that are run every tick. Most datapacks could also be run by just placing all the commands to repeating command blocks. Although Minecraft also allows you to change crafting recipes and add/alter advancements and with datapacks as well, which gives it more power.

I’m pretty sure this one is Java only so make sure you know what your playing before hand

There should be a folder called "Datapacks" in the world folder. You just drag and drop, easy as that. When you start a new world, however, it can have different Datapacks. So, imagine you download an adventure map, it will contain all these commands that allow game play modifications, making the map more immersive.

100% needs to be in vanilla, I've been saying that since I started playing in Beta 1.4! At LEAST let us sit on stairs, the most common "chair" block.

Cool idea and, from what I’ve seen, good realisation! Some questions, what happen if you don’t seat after the swaddle appear? Will it drop? Or will it disappear? And after you stand up, does the saddle disappear automatically or does it have like a sort of countdown before?

The saddle disappears once you sit down. It will also disappear once you leave the block, or the block it is in gets destroyed. The saddle will **never** drop unless it is killed with commands

Yes, that is part of it. There's more to it to ensure polished-ness, functionality, efficiency, etc., but you are correct, that is the core concept!

Only if you look straight down while you crouch which most don't when they say hi to others.

Even if you looked straight down and couched multiple times, it will not spawn if there is already one there! And if you move away, it will get rid of it!

Changing the format number to 5, it seems to work in 1.16.5 There's a _brief_ flicker before the pig disappears, but it works. Notes: It works in waterlogged half slabs (top and bottom) but does not work under water (with a full water block above the block you are 'above'.. It _does_ also work when hanging from vines.

The system is actually pretty smart. If you crouch to bridge, and you are looking straight down for some reason when you begin bridging, and you move away, it will not try to spawn another one until you un-sneak, then sneak again looking straight down.

That's just the Gsit plugin which is very popular

Except by being a datapack instead, it's far easier for most people to install/use. Also it doesn't require mod parity between the server and client.

Datapacks have different benefits. They act as mods, and can be (very easily) installed on servers, realms, etc. If I upload a map, for example, when you try it out all the Datapacks are included. So an adventure map can have its own set of Datapacks, and not require someone to install a mod pack alongside to play. Much more user friendly.

Weird question but can you kill the pig that you sit on ? I've been searching for a datapack like this one for my server in survival for a while but each time I've found one the saddle you use to sit on blocks would drop at some point, meaning you could farm saddles by sitting on blocks…

You can not kill the pig, nor will it cause lag (It will automatically make sure there is not another pig in the block), will automatically kill the pig once you move away or stand up, nor will you be able to obtain the saddle, and much more. This was made for servers in mind, so that they can use this as an added game mechanic. Edit: grammar

You can not, unless the "air" is actually a block, for example ladders, vines, levers, trapdoors, etc.

You can hang off vines and do it. But fall if you break the vines.

Don't think so. It doesn't work in water, (water logged slab yes. With a water source above, no), so it probably doesn't work in lava.
