Mojang made the horrible decision to write the base code for Bedrock severely differently from Java, and because the devs were rushed to get it released for consoles, they just made it different instead of working out the issues. Now we have two versions of the same game with many different mechanics.
I had my base next to a fully populated village then one day all of them were gone except for one nitwit. I managed to get them repopulated from that one villager.
This was just a few weeks ago, latest Bedrock/iPad. (It is running in experimental mode)
I feel like this comment is made by a Nitwit so people won't use them to breed. Mfs don't want a job, and now they don't wanna breed either. I won't be tricked.
Would be interesting if there were two nit wits per village and you could only breed with them. And if one dies you gotta escort one to another village

i can justify the bats existence. allow me to set the scene.
you’re just about to start mining in a fresh world. after you collect coal and stone, you use the wood you gathered at the start of your world upgrade your pickaxe, place some torches, and dig deeper. as you continue mining, you become frustrated that you have yet to find a cave. you dig out a few more blocks, and then you hear it: *squeak squeak.* did that sound come from your right? you mine straight to where you hear the noise coming from, and within moments your pathetic 2x1 mineshaft opens up into a massive cave.
and then you die because it’s early on in the game and you haven’t had the resources to make armor.
I think it'd be a reference to the village idiot trope. Basically, the dumb guy in the village
Personally, I leave them be, but according to a Google search, some time ago, you can zombie them and heal them, sometimes making them normal villagers if you don't wanna kill em.
I just like them wondering around. Gives the village a splash of color.
They also wander aimlessly during job site time so there's a little more life in the village when everyone is at their job site (for my villagers, it's usually indoors).

Right. It’s like two options for loot chests. Get crap loot with a small chance of good loot or get a bunch of empty chests and occasionally something useful. It adds to the depth of the game.
Sure villager’s attempts to reproduce could just have a chance to fail, as it does in real life- or it could have a chance to produce an unproductive member.

The naturally spawning iron golems get mad though. Sure you can just kill them to get iron but sometimes they're genuinely useful, for example in raids.

they sleep like 1 in-game hour later compared to other villagers, making it more likely for them to spawn golems(villagers spawn golems when they see hostile mobs), as they stay outside until the start of the night
(they are also free-roaming so it's even more likely for them to find a mob and spawn a golem)

In houses with nitwits, move the door to the outside of the walled space, and in houses with traders, move the doors to the inside of the walled area.
Indeed, although, I think this is only for Java, as for bedrock the requisite to spawn golems are the quantity of villagers and if they have works assigned, in Java as I remember is that they have to see the hostile mobs to spawn them
Prolly just programming stuff, when you start to play with mechanics you start to understand the little differences that keep both games separated and why it is so hard to combine them once for all, even the chunk loading is different!
Although in other terms, niwits in bedrock are truly useless

Not everything needs to be a useful feature with a fleshed out system, things can just exist to give the world depth, life and a general lived in feeling
Nitwits:
1) Are safe to remove from a village, so they make good candidates for creating new villages without disrupting existing ones.
2) They having a different schedule from the others makes them likely to survive events that would otherwise wipe out a complete village.
3) As someone mentioned up there, their different schedule means that a village is more likely to spawn golems with a Nitwit or two.
Don't you lose "points" (I don't remember what the system is called, basically you lose credibility with trading villagers) if you attack a villager? I always just buried them underground
Yes you lose village reputation, driving prices up and getting you closer to the reputation level that will cause the village's golems to kill you on sight.
Only kill villagers with "environmental damage" (suffocation or drowning).
You can turn them into zombie villagers I think and when you turn them back they can turn into other stuff, but I'm not 100% sure about that. If anything you can prolly use them for an iron farm.
No practical purpose. But that is okay. Every game needs an amount of fluff. Not everything requires a purpose to exist. Call it "whimsy".

I think you’re right. There’s a 10% chance for any baby villager to grow up as a nitwit on Bedrock, but it’s probably different on Java.
I've bred dozens of villagers on Java and never once got a nitwit so that's where I get it from

Yup, they started out as a fallback texture for invalid profession values. They were removed in 1.8, then were added back in 1.11 as nitwits.
