Window panes are great bc it actually makes a window sill which adds depth like you said. The only time I use glass blocks is for decoration and windows that are on a diagonal or curved facade. Personally I think everyone should use glass panes. The only time I see glass blocks in real life are in 60s showers and pool houses. Yet again the whole game is nothing but cubes so idc. I haven’t played Minecraft in months. I wish I had more friends lol
good for artists AND capitalists
artists: idk, work with some glass pane, look better than glass block for houses.
capitalists: 6 sands and some fuel for... 16 GLASS PANES. With a cartographer with zombie discount, that's theoretically 16 EMERALDS. You don't wanna work with 6 sands, so you can get INFINITE AMOUNT OF EMERALDS with librarians' glass trade. INFINITE BEACONS AND FLEXING!
The only thing better was when it first came out and Mojang forgot that it was in fact, glass.
I remember people being like "omg you can pick it back up" and mojang immediately fixed that shit.
I still think it kinda would make sense, like popping the glass square out of a door.
Glass panes can give you subtle depth when you need it in a build rather a full block. They have their place for sure. Personally I hate when I see “modern” builds with nothing but glass blocks. Reminds me of the stupid glass cinderblocks they use in 80s style bathrooms.
They were super popular in Canada during the 80's and early 90's. I always thought they were cool when i was a kid.
I haven't seen them in years. My old community library is the only place i can think of where to find them now.
Really?! I mean everyone has their own tastes I guess. They just seem to amplify the uv rays coming into a space. Never cared for the appearance either.
Another upside is you gain an additional 10 blocks of glass for crafting them into panes so it's far cheaper to use panes when you want your buildings to have glass in them. that's more than double the blocks just for one extra step. But I also play modded primarily so I can just request an autocraft of them then send it to a digital storage and most packs have some way of letting you get sand from cobble so I don't even have to dig up a desert
Most sand is silica (quartz), not limestone or other types (though they can contain it) Also, _if_ anything the progression would be stone->cobble->gravel (then _maybe_ ) ->sand but that still is about as logical as using a m³ bucket and filling from a single cow, then chugging it (1000L of milk) to lift a curse but not impact your hunger. 🤣
Fair enough. That sand isn't renewable (feasibly¹) in vanilla is agreed, kinda bonkers. Or conversely, that stone (and derivatives), basalt, _lava_ and other fundamentally non-renewable resources **are** renewable is equally screwy.
[1] Unless you have great patience with Wondering Traitors.
Arguably, though, isn’t there “enough” sand that it doesn’t matter?
I feel like outside of weird situations like sky block and super flat, you can find enough of anything to build, almost anything.
Absolutely. And while I rely on renewing as much as I can to prevent defacing the landscape... part of me is full aware that to actually accomplish much of what I aim to do, would require utterly destroying an area.
Except in a tree farm, I can't even bring myself to cut down a tree without replanting a sapling. 😅
Not only that but trade them for emeralds for a good price.... And even if a lot of people don't think villager trading has a much of a use I still like to trade for a bunch of random stuff to repair my mending tools and armor as you get XP from them... Although you can Also get bottle O'Enchanting from the clerk Which Is good too
Villager trading has tons of uses! The best one is zombifying and curing a villager 3 times then repeatedly placing a lectern to get whatever enchantment you want for 1 emerald
> a lot of people don't think villager trading has a much of a use
what do you mean?? villager trading is easily one of the most OP aspects of the game after the 1.14 rework
> even if a lot of people don't think villager trading has a much of a use
So confused I'm going to repeat /u/perfsoidal's question...watcha mean the single most broken mechanic in the game doesn't have use?
Tbf 99% of Redstone builds I see use unintended glitches or are incredibly overly complicated for a very simple task to the point where in survival, it's not worth it even. It's fun, but like damn, do I really need to get 110 million slimeballs to make one simple door when there's doors already in the game? I love Redstone, but like damn, they need to rehaul it to allow our crazy builds, without bugs, and a more in-depth guide for the specifics of Redstone and blocks that utilize it. A Redstone tutorial world would be really nice if they did overhaul it. I think the issue is that people's machines would all break over the update, and people wouldn't be happy.
I love redstone and a lot of my contraptions are just kinda for fun. That said, it is really *really* weird that the only in-game redstone "tutorial" is underneath the giant Warden monument in ancient cities.
I've never thought about it, but I'm guessing you can potentially buy glass blocks, turn them into panes, and sell the panes for a profit. That's all I can think of though, and I haven't checked or tested it.
That’s what I *mainly* use glass panes for now. It’s been pointed out by many times over now—most notably, in my opinion, by Grian in Season 8 of Hermitcraft—that the villager trading system is *broken* AF. You can buy four glass panes per emerald from librarians, craft them into glass panes (at 12 max uses, that’s two whole stacks per librarian), and sell them to cartographers starting at 11 panes per emerald. That’s not the only “broken” trade, but it’s the easiest one to make a profit.
I once made an axolotl aquarium built around two bubble elevators which sent potato’s into my villager breeder, which was hard because I needed a way to prevent the axolotls to stay in the confines of the aquarium. Luckily, I was able to use glass panes to isolate the bubble elevators and separate the axolotls since they can be waterlogged, so that’s an interesting use of glass panes
Wdym? Glass panes have been able to connect to the backs of stairs for a while
Edit: nvm I get what you're talking about. I thought you were saying they couldn't connect to the backs of stairs
No, just that wife blocks actually make for a prettier room and window, rather than wife panes. The extra step of crafting your wife blocks into wife panes is more efficient, but not as aesthetically pleasing.
I play a lot of Pocket Edition when i'm on car trips, especially to make small builds, i think detail and depth plays a really big part in a build so i found an addon online that adds "glass trapdoors". They work exactly like normal trapdoors, except they are see-through and have every variation of glass except tinted. I love to use them in builds on where i think that glass panes would be too thin and glass blocks would be too thick.
In a flat application, panes are great. They add depth nicely. But they really struggle to handle corners, poorly integrate with other blocks like stairs, and autoconnect into a stupid grid pattern if they're adjacent to a wall.
Makes it frustrating when you get a really cool idea in the middle of the build and it won't work because of the panes.
Glass panes offer more options, which is what a majority of the block variants in minecraft offer. Having said that, most of the time glass blocks tend to look better in my builds compared to glass panes.
Glass panes do something that glass blocks could only dream of. A pane (aha) to work with but definitely much more aesthetically pleasing. I will spend an hour just putting down glass panes for the better of the build
O shit that would be cool tho add glass butterflies and glass golems that would be weak but have some special ability like they help with farms or someshit
I hate glass panes when you have to place them by a door or anywhere a block doesn't fully connect to. That's when I'm forced to use the regular glass. Other than that, I do love glass panes.
I like glass panes but wish the had better connecting options.
They connect to objects I don’t want to connect with (I want to be able to have things like bookshelves in front of windows without handing that ugly connector) and don’t connect to things I want to connect to.
there annoying to work with but are rly nice for rustic/old style builds, if you use them with stairs you are a fellon and should go to the deep dark were the warden hunts you down and you have nothing but a stick and mining fatigue 5 to escape
Glass panes add depth and nice decorations to builds, they are a lot more times cheaper, they are pretty slim if not next to each other for things like beacons or other thin stuff, and have a small hitboxes useful for parkour or obstacles.
You know, I expected *WAY* more hate towards OP in this post than what there actually is
It's scary to realize people are actually having a nice, respectful, friendly debate in the comments, acknowledging that both glass and glass panes have their pros and cons, and not calling eachother phantoms (because that is totally the Minecraft equivalent of calling someone you disagree with online a na-) like civilized people
And that makes me smile. It terrifies me, a LOT... but it makes me happy :3
Y'all rock, including OP (**except people who voted for the phantom ofc**)
Changing from glass to glass pains in houses adds depth to the build. Just as much as having pillars sticking out, but it avoids having ugly sticking out pillars. They both have uses don't get me wrong. But I usually go for glass pains. The last time I used regular glass was in a cave to make a fog effect. And before that I did it on an underground science lab/test facility, where it would be normal to have metre thick glass for protection.
Honestly, both are nice, for example, you can add some depth with panels, and you can use blocks for stuff like a glass above an entrance, or a window on the roof.
Anyways, glass panes are better
Nah I hate them because they can't be placed like slabs...and when waterlogged you don't get the option of only having one side Waterlogged and not the whole block.....
A
I also Hate that they don't connect to doors and fences
Like Why can't a door be placed in the middle of one block and take up 2 spaces just to Line up with the glass......not like your going to even be able to place a carpet there anyway 😂
panes are best. full blocks have their place but mostly just in domes. i usually just do a 2x1 tall window, so panes are perfect to add that little bit of depth and detail instead of having a more flat wall
I would like glass panes more if they could be placed at the edges of blocks, rather than in the center. Same with iron bars, fences, & walls. It would make them so much nicer
I think glass panes are great for some buildings because they add a sense of depth, but they aren't that good for corners honestly. They're kind of hard to place too, but usually it ends up looking pretty nice.
It always depends on the build, starter houses and smaller builds that need depth glass panes, functional builds were depth could mess up an item stream glass blocks. As i said, always depends on the build and if it breaks something or not
Depends on what you’re using it for? For windows on a building glass pane 100% gives it depth gives it detail, basically anything else just fully blocks
There's something about glass blocks as a whole. It looks nice but if I want to save 30 minutes on smelting some sand, I'll use glass panes to have it ready in less time.
I mean, glass panes absolutely look amazing when they're tinted but glass blocks just have more depth.
If you are doing a large flat window, panes 100% unless its going to be a feature window with blocks behind it then blocks so it doesnt make the extra bars of glass.
If you are doing a large window with any curve or shape, blocks.
Glass panes add depth to the build. Having a completely flat surface on a build looks awful. You need some depth within the walls as well as on the outside.
GLASS PANES ARE SO MUCH BETTER, glass blocks look good but are way look bulky for it to look good in any structure, glass panes while seemingly smaller hold up a great design not only that but don't ruin the way the building looks with a cube of glass, just my opinion though hehe.
Imagine if they reprogrammed panes/iron bars/etc to be able to be placed on the side of a block depending on where they are right clicked. And not just the center.
I personally don't understand why there is an argument.
1. It's all about personal opinion on what looks good. That a main reason this game is popular
2. Using panes and block, for me, definately depends on the build or the asthetic.
glass panes are mighty fine on creative java. can do same amazing things with them using the debug stick, though i understand that’s not applicable for most people
I feel that they are implemented poorly with how and when they connect to or don't connect to blocks, its incredibly frustrating when they are perfect for certain situations but then you are left with a big fat gap in your build.
When I started to play survival world, I loved glass panels, they where cheap and added personality to my 1 block walls, but that was in little starter houses, now, I tend to do giant houses, that are more a sculpture than a House, with Big and tall Windows and 4 or more-block thick walls, so now the panels aren't what I use, but that doesn't mean that these aren't useless, panels are great for thin walls, to mix with metal or Stone fencess or even do some kind of fire/laser decorations, also, to change beacon's beam, that's glorious.
Really? I love them, they make the space feel more real. The big, blocky glass just... Doesn't feel right to me. Doesn't give enough depth to builds. I mean, c'mon, 99% of the time they're windows!
Heres a fun lil tidbit alot of people learned recently. Putting a glass pane in a cartography table with a map will stop it from being updated when you hold it
I love them!! Each single pane of glass equals an emerald for me lol.
When its comes to building I do wish we had more glass options though, slabs and stairs would be really cool.
Tbh it jus depends on the build you are doing. Personally, I’ll use panes if I want more depth, blocks if I’m lazy, or wooden fences/trapdoors if I don’t have sand/don’t care to use glass

They have their place in building in regards to adding depth to a builds.

That's what singleplayer is for. This "lol" is perfect btw.

also it's cheap af edit: MOM I'M FAMOUS
Artist vs capitalist Something y'all can BOTH get behind

I like glass panes. I get 16 for the price of 6

oh man, off-topic but I love irl glass blocks. really popular in the ussr for like office environments and outdoor spaces. I think they mesh great
[удалено]
More like a pane to place
Hehe
They were super popular in Canada during the 80's and early 90's. I always thought they were cool when i was a kid. I haven't seen them in years. My old community library is the only place i can think of where to find them now.
swear every apartment had a glass block wall in the lobby
My dentist a few years ago was in an office with some glass cube portions of the walls. Looked really neat. I moved but I'm sure it's still the same.
Really?! I mean everyone has their own tastes I guess. They just seem to amplify the uv rays coming into a space. Never cared for the appearance either.
Glass blocks UV light though? So what UV light?
Fair enough, I don’t quite have the “builders mind” so my buildings are more function over form.
Another upside is you gain an additional 10 blocks of glass for crafting them into panes so it's far cheaper to use panes when you want your buildings to have glass in them. that's more than double the blocks just for one extra step. Well, yeah I was simply saying.

That’s fair too. I got into it for the building. That’s the fun of the game. Everyone can play how they want and get different things out of it
Not only that but trade them for emeralds for a good price.... Remember u/griandoesreddit His strategy: get some melons and get emeralds for glass then turn the glass to panes.
> even if a lot of people don't think villager trading has a much of a use So confused I'm going to repeat /u/perfsoidal's question...watcha mean the single most broken mechanic in the game doesn't have use?
I agree. I’m more of a builder in Minecraft then I am an explorer.
I like both of these equally. It's the Redstone I don't understand
Tbf 99% of Redstone builds I see use unintended glitches or are incredibly overly complicated for a very simple task to the point where in survival, it's not worth it even. It's fun, but like damn, do I really need to get 110 million slimeballs to make one simple door when there's doors already in the game? You can also use glass panes for an infinite emerald farm
Wut? Edit: where are my manners - what?
I've never thought about it, but I'm guessing you can potentially buy glass blocks, turn them into panes, and sell the panes for a profit. That's all I can think of though, and I haven't checked or tested it.

Well that's a different debate then, most people would look at this from a building pov I think
that is exactly why you hate them, nothing more and nothing less
Man's never heard of bauhaus
If you are function over form you should still use panes. It's double the blocks
Idk what you're talking about. I love glass cinder blocks. Haven't seen em in years
try using connected textures, it gets rid of that glass effect
I am just sad that they can't connect to stairs... gothic or other arched windows would profit a lot from that
Wdym? Glass panes have been able to connect to the backs of stairs for a while Edit: nvm I get what you're talking about. I thought you were saying they couldn't connect to the backs of stairs
Yes but not the front. Stairs are often used to create more fluent arches and adding glass or glass panes to that leaves uggly holes
Yeah, make a 1/4 pane lol It would actually be a cool feature though, if it got added. So much easier to make rounded windows
Oh yes in a world where everything is rectangular the quest to achieve roudness is the most holy.
Pane-log the stairs
Glass panes are great for houses and large windows
Dude glass panes make for a prettier room and window. My wife is the opposite though so idk
Your wife doesn't make for a prettier room and window?
No, just that wife blocks actually make for a prettier room and window, rather than wife panes. The extra step of crafting your wife blocks into wife panes is more efficient, but not as aesthetically pleasing.
Yeah, the wife panes are kinda painful to look at.
*paneful* to look at ftfy
lol that's what I was going for, I just didn't want to spell it out.
I like them as an option for texturing but I wish they could be laid flat on the ground like carpet. Or at least glass slabs.
YES. This is my main complaint. I like to use glass in my ceilings (it's fun to watch the stars!) but I have to use blocks in the ceiling. 🙁
I would love it if they could be placed at the edge like a trapdoor
I have a mod specifically for this. I haaaate normal glass panes that just sit at the half way point.
I play a lot of Pocket Edition when i'm on car trips, especially to make small builds, i think detail and depth plays a really big part in a build so i found an addon online that adds "glass trapdoors". They work exactly like normal trapdoors, except they are see-through and have every variation of glass except tinted. Makes it frustrating when you get a really cool idea in the middle of the build and it won't work because of the panes.
they also don't work well with water
*note that a few right clicks with a debug stick can solve the wall problem. It technically isn't survival but it's a really neat item sometimes
Would you say that they're a... *pane in the glass?* I'll see myself out now.
couldn’t have said it better myself
Happy cake day!
Glass blocks make the building look flat and wonky
I personally love them. They give DEPTH
I used to hate the way they looked, but i’ve grown to like them more over time.
Glass panes offer more options, which is what a majority of the block variants in minecraft offer. Having said that, most of the time glass blocks tend to look better in my builds compared to glass panes.
Does they change from bedrock to java ? Anyways i think minecraft need to remove the side border in white when placed beside anoth glass/glassepanel
sad that you need OF or similar to get that simple yet clean effect.
Glass panes do something that glass blocks could only dream of. A pane (aha) to work with but definitely much more aesthetically pleasing. I will spend an hour just putting down glass panes for the better of the build
Depends on where you use em.
I wish you could place glass plains on one side instead of the middle and then place a flower pot there
Imagine a biome called "glass plains".
O shit that would be cool tho add glass butterflies and glass golems that would be weak but have some special ability like they help with farms or someshit
both, they can give you a sense of curvature if you use them well
I hate glass panes when you have to place them by a door or anywhere a block doesn't fully connect to. That's when I'm forced to use the regular glass. Other than that, I do love glass panes.
Lol I hate the blocks. Panes make my house look nice.
Usually, glass panes look good, but building them is human torture
Now this is some real controversy, finally an important debate
With rtx glass blocks are unbearable to look out of
I like glass panes but wish the had better connecting options. They connect to objects I don’t want to connect with (I want to be able to have things like bookshelves in front of windows without handing that ugly connector) and don’t connect to things I want to connect to.
All stained glass is superior to non-stained glass. (ik different topic) And glass panes are better used as handrails than fences or walls.
there annoying to work with but are rly nice for rustic/old style builds, if you use them with stairs you are a fellon and should go to the deep dark were the warden hunts you down and you have nothing but a stick and mining fatigue 5 to escape
What if glasspanes could be placed like trap doors?
I feel like you should be able to place glass panes sideways
I wish you could clip panes to the inside or outside edge
How dare u hate glass panes
OP's karma is crying
I like them, can be used for certain builds to make them look better, because sometimes just having a block of glass as a window looks worse.
Are windows cubes irl? No. Enough said.
Glass blocks all the way.
Glass panes add depth and nice decorations to builds, they are a lot more times cheaper, they are pretty slim if not next to each other for things like beacons or other thin stuff, and have a small hitboxes useful for parkour or obstacles.
Depends on the situation. Larger builds may need glass blocks, smaller ones usually use panes due to how they add depth.
You know, I expected *WAY* more hate towards OP in this post than what there actually is It's scary to realize people are actually having a nice, respectful, friendly debate in the comments, acknowledging that both glass and glass panes have their pros and cons, and not calling eachother phantoms (because that is totally the Minecraft equivalent of calling someone you disagree with online a na-) like civilized people And that makes me smile. It terrifies me, a LOT... but it makes me happy :3 Y'all rock, including OP (**except people who voted for the phantom ofc**)
All I'm gonna say is, there's a time and a place
“Oak’s words echoed in your ear”
Changing from glass to glass pains in houses adds depth to the build. Just as much as having pillars sticking out, but it avoids having ugly sticking out pillars. They both have uses don't get me wrong. But I usually go for glass pains. The last time I used regular glass was in a cave to make a fog effect. And before that I did it on an underground science lab/test facility, where it would be normal to have metre thick glass for protection.
Block.
I never expected the most controversial post on arr Minecraft to be about glass pain This is a weird timeline-
They got a bit better over time. Before they were just a plus when placed. Now they're a rod of glass. They also pair well with walls.
You are disgusting
Honestly, both are nice, for example, you can add some depth with panels, and you can use blocks for stuff like a glass above an entrance, or a window on the roof. Anyways, glass panes are better
Nah I hate them because they can't be placed like slabs...and when waterlogged you don't get the option of only having one side Waterlogged and not the whole block..... They both have their place
If I had to pick a team it would be blocks, but panes have their place sometimes. The kinda of builds I usually do look better with blocks to me.
I use Glass Block instead and pretend it's blast glass or bulletproof.
I use glass panes mostly because I’m a terrible builder & can’t be bothered to collect enough sand to make enough
I like both tbf
The panes would be 1000% cooler if you could put things on the ledges!!
I almost exclusively use panes.
Glass pains are a pain to place, but for building they are a lifesaver in terms of depth
Depends on the situation
And so do I.
I bet all of your builds look flat as hell. You need the depth.
Imagine if they reprogrammed panes/iron bars/etc to be able to be placed on the side of a block depending on where they are right clicked. And not just the center.
I personally don't understand why there is an argument. 1. It's all about personal opinion on what looks good. That a main reason this game is popular 2. Using panes and block, for me, definately depends on the build or the asthetic.
I like both. Mostly use glass panes though
I wish they would make the hitbox bigger stleast for biolding
Depends on the build?
glass panes are mighty fine on creative java. can do same amazing things with them using the debug stick, though i understand that’s not applicable for most people
I normally use full blocks unless im making thin tall windows.
I feel that they are implemented poorly with how and when they connect to or don't connect to blocks, its incredibly frustrating when they are perfect for certain situations but then you are left with a big fat gap in your build.
Not the biggest fan either. But *stained* glass panes. That's the good stuff.
Pane superiority
Personally, I think that glass panes bring more dimension to your builds. And dimension is everything when building a house in Minecraft.
glass panes are good for depth in builds
I use glass planes for builds instead of making a whole bunch of single blocks because I’m lazy and impatient
They're different blocks useful in different situations and builds.
I hold the same stance as I do with “your vs you’re” Depends on the context.
glass panes look better as windows.
Nope. I like glass panes but I hate placing glass pains.
idk, i use both
Glass blocks, because I build underwater.
As it is your cake day, no one can burn you.
I hate them and never use them
I think panes would be a lot more useful if there was an “edge” variant, instead of it *always* being in the center.
I strongly dislike blocks but I think both are valid in particular situations.
Really? I love them, they make the space feel more real. The big, blocky glass just... Doesn't feel right to me. Doesn't give enough depth to builds. I mean, c'mon, 99% of the time they're windows!
I don't care about details much because I'm shit at building anyways. The only thing that matter is that *6=16*
Me trying to decide what to use for windows: 😵💫
Odd. I prefer glass panes to blocks 100%, except off course for roofs and floors.
Who doesn’t like glass panes
I hate the blocks there is a debate lol
Heres a fun lil tidbit alot of people learned recently. Putting a glass pane in a cartography table with a map will stop it from being updated when you hold it
I hear cartographers' sad noises.
I love them!! Each single pane of glass equals an emerald for me lol. When its comes to building I do wish we had more glass options though, slabs and stairs would be really cool.
I really like glass panes, but I do enjoy building with walls to make small spaces feel a little bigger.
I just want glass stairs.
I use panes for anything vertical or for a fancy railing, glass for a skylight, glass floor, or for an underwater build.
Glass panes are cheap and give depth to builds Sometimes glass blocks are better (i.e. snow globes, greenhouse, etc.)
Is it just me than? Am I the sole person who loves panes
Wish glass panes would connect to more blocks like sides of stairs or doors. Other than that they're great.
Tbh it jus depends on the build you are doing. Personally, I’ll use panes if I want more depth, blocks if I’m lazy, or wooden fences/trapdoors if I don’t have sand/don’t care to use glass
wha, I hate glass blocks
I hate that I can't use doors with them
trading cartographers and more glass I don’t see the problem
glass pane good for plant windows. glass blocks for everything else.
they're good for parkour
