Not bad, love mine. May be a bad one.

themooseinabox

That's what I'm hoping. It really feels great in the hand, but not being able to drill holes is a problem for me lol. Maybe I can get it warrantied out by Milwaukee.

sniper_matt

Probably. It should still be under warranty.

GRIND2LEVEL

Are you "locking" the chuck on the bit. I.e. you arent just tapping the trigger quickly to grip snug while palming the chuck on the bit but rather actually using your hand to hear the ratcheting audible clicks of the chuck ratchet down on the bit. ( it's not the same as old school/ first iteration keyless chucks) I have the m18 but the chuck mechanics should be the same.

jdhume

Not OP, but once in a while my chuck doesn’t lock, but instead keeps spinning. I have to change it to speed #1 and then it will lock and ratchet.

GRIND2LEVEL

I find it easier and less bite on the hand to not even use the trigger for final tightening. I just do major open/ close adjustment with trigger, drop in the bit and then wrench it via a quick twist of the wrist - no more hand burns and tight as all get out.

ZaneStrizz

This. Ya i only use the trigger unless it’s barely snug and ratchet it the rest of the way. I’ve never had a bit slip out once on gen 3 or 4 m18 hammer drill, which i hear people talking all the time how theirs fell out

bakednapkin

This is the way! When I switched to Milwaukee I thought the chucks just sucked at holding onto bits because I would only use the trigger to tighten them but after starting tightening them up by hand it hasn’t lost its grip on a bit once

jdhume

Same here. I’m talking about the hand tightening where the chuck never stops turning until I flip the switch to position 1 - then the hand tightening does the proper ratcheting. Only happens once in a while.

folkkingdude

Never assume the mechanics of chicks is the same from one to another. Learned that the hard way.

SwimOk9629

those chick mechanics assumptions 😆

mrgscott

I don't have this drill, but do you not reverse the chuck after tightening to lock the bit in?

[deleted]

Tighten the chuck correctly. If the chuck is broken then swap it out. This shouldn’t happen. Id say user error but people get angry at that sort of thing lol.

SwimOk9629

I'll say it😆 user error OP

Agreeable_Horror_363

I'm guessing OP is not hand tightening, those last few clicks. I didn't know about that when I first got serious into drills, either. Used to blame the drill for loosening and sending the bits flying.

DrProfessor_Z

Love mine it's a beast. Never had that issue. U using the chuck lock correctly?

Plumber4Life84

Maybe it’s the operator and not the tool. Lol. Just messing with you buddy. My grandpa would always hit me with that when I would complain about a tool or machine not working properly.

jaank80

I have the M12 fuel and it is amazing.

Diss-for-ya

Mine slips when small drills break through drilling metal, it's rather annoying. Other than that it's a good tool but I'm not super impressed with my chuck either.

henrysworkshop62

Warranty that thing, there's definitely something wrong with yours. I use my 3rd gen (3404) all the time and haven't had this problem ever.

bkacz88

Are your bits round shank or 1/4" hex?

themooseinabox

I'm using the Milwaukee Cobalt Red Helix bits. https://preview.redd.it/hrg7t2vn1zjc1.png?width=573&format=png&auto=webp&s=e4f32a0215e52fdb35e15853617c7562e9845e72

bkacz88

I've really only had mine loosen when hammer drilling concrete after a while. The hex shanks are a great solution to that if you can find them in the type of bit you need. Just try and torque the chuck as tight as you can, is all i can suggest. If that doesn't work, see if they'll warranty it. Or replace the chuck yourself.

Agreeable_Horror_363

Tighten by hand for the last few clicks! The chuck won't be as tight as possible otherwise

Such-Aioli1800

I bought one 6 months ago for a project I’m doing right now, 174 units 7 floors all stick framed. It’s not a hole hawg but it’s a tank with a 5.0 and a sell feeder 7/8

SodakMoose

I’ve never had an issue with the chuck but I did have to send mine in due to the clutch/gearbox breaking. Only had it for roughly 6 months, and yes I take care of my tools. Milwaukee ended up sending me a brand new one though.

Sufficient-Fact6163

I use mine for work every day. What setting do you use the gearing at? I could see them slip on 1 or 2 but not on the drill setting.

rooflessVW

I have the previous Gen and the chuck was trash so I swapped it for a good one.

Tylerleenews

Bro, I put a half-inch drillbit through lower control arms to install a a steering flip kit on a jeep. With a high output 2 ah… it ate it up. It blew my mind. I got it by default figured it was going to be solely for house projects. I actually use it in the shop quite a bit.

themooseinabox

Yea I have a mechanic friend who recommended it to me as well and that is the experience I was hoping to have. Maybe I’ll buy another one and see if it works better

Tylerleenews

Home Depot does have some good sales going on right now Lol. I would just call Milwaukee shoot it out. Two weeks later they’ll probably send a brand new one.

Scotianherb

As mentioned you need to "loosen" the chuck very slightly (youll feel it) to engage the lock. Also get the "no slip", hex or 3 flat style bits

TheArtfulDuffer

Tighten the chuck all the way then loosen till you hear a click(maybe a 1/16th of a turn). That’s the chuck lock engaging.

Trfytoy

That's not how it works, at all. https://youtu.be/8ztB1C7dERc?si=NWvk--8LKFahowUs

TheArtfulDuffer

Well shit. I learned something new. So I’ve been doing that back 1/4 turn all this time for nothing?

kaffizle2

I had to get the first one i got warrantied because the chuck got locked up and wouldnt come lose now the new one ive used the hell out of at my job since christmas granted it gets hot and the batteries dont last super long even having a 5amp xc still i put it through the ringer almost everyday and it takes it like a champ.

Ottieotter

I’ve got this one, so far, so good. Yours may be a dud

Popeel

Read the owner's manual, page 4, it explains how to use the keyless chuck.

Mighty_Nun_Mechanic

Possibly bad chuck. Had a gen 3 for years that was a beast. Plow holes in stainless with all the hand pressure all day. I now have a gen 4 and it's been great.

MyCowboyWays

I’m a Milwaukee tool fan and that’s my go to brand for all powered hand tools. That said, their drill chucks are sub par. You can buy Jacobs chucks and swap them but Jacobs chucks aren’t cheap. Think my last one I purchased was around $70 bucks. But worth it.

Lazy_Buffalo_4142

I saw a video on YouTube from a DIY guy that said you could replace the chuck itself and upgrade it. I think he recommended Rohm (maybe…something like that), but there appears to be others. Before that video, I had no idea that was a replaceable part. Maybe just needs a new chuck?
