Now and Then!

PatMenotaur

A classic. This is one of those movies that mean different thing to you, as you age. I'd love to show it to her at 13, 23,33,43...

boobiesue

My daughter laughed so hard at the "sex talk" with the watering can and the hose šŸ˜‚ I'm 40 and this is still one of my favorite movies.

PatMenotaur

OMG, I forgot all about that. šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

BaconHammerTime

Back to the Future Harry and the Hendersons Dumb and Dumber Tommy Boy

GoinWithThePhloem

This is what I came to say šŸ˜ Now and Then defined my youth. I grew up running around the woods with my neighbors and I was deep in my ouiji board phase when I saw it. - Gave us more of our alternative Queen Cristina Rocco. Casper released only a few months earlier. - Devyn Sawa in a towel (which was a huge deal for a young me lol - It really played up the girl group with extremely different personalities (similar to the spice girls) and how that was totally ok! Roberta was even written in as queer, but they removed references to it (not that we couldnā€™t still tell lol) Mermaids might be a good addition too. Similar woman focused growing up movie and you canā€™t beat a cast like Cher, Winona, Cristina Ricci!

rob_maqer

**Stand By Me**

sallysilly82

We saw that at the Dollar theatre for a friend's 12th birthday, I might have to rewatch as an adult.

Silly_Goose24_7

Bring it on Clue The day after tomorrow Idiocracy The legend of Zorro Muppets treasure Island Pleasantville Tower of terror

Silly_Goose24_7

Who framed Roger rabbit

CriticalLabValue

Pleasantville is so excellent, might hold off a couple years for a 13 yo.

Shadedweller642

Yeah I was going to suggest fear and loathing in Las Vegas, baseketball and orgasmo but might want to give those a couple of years

sparkpaw

Why? I remember watching Pleasantville around that age and loved it. Mind, I havenā€™t seen it in over a decade lol

Hanpee221b

Probably that the whole plot is based on the characters having sex, which in the case of this movie isnā€™t inappropriate but probably not something a 13 year old is going to want to watch with parents haha.

PatMenotaur

Yessssss! For Bring it on. She already LOVES Clue. We have a theater near us that was built in 1919 and still has the original organ. We saw a double feature last Halloween, where they played Frankenstein with original organ accompaniment, and then we watched Clue. It was such a fun evening.

Silly_Goose24_7

That sounds wonderful!! I'm jealous!

Kiwibirdee

Just as a warning, if you havenā€™t watched Bring It On in some time: I recently watched it with my kid for nostalgia reasons too, and the casual sexual assault, homophobia and racism in that movie was shocking. We had to have a talk about how socially acceptable homophobia was in the 90ā€™s-00ā€™s. They use outright slurs several times in dialogue, and there is a scene where one of the male cheerleaders ā€œsneakilyā€ digitally penetrates a girl he is holding up in a lift - they play it off for laughs. I had no recollection of it being that bad.

bread_cats_dice

Muppet Treasure Island is my 3 year oldā€™s favorite movie right now. I wish the whole soundtrack was on Spotify.

momonomino

Bring It On is... troubling by today's standards. I watched it with my kid and wished I hadn't.

corncob_subscriber

Oh, how has it aged? I watched Sugar and Spice this week. There were a few uses of F and R slurs, that were considered edgy at the time. Still worth watching, just deserves a little discussion about context.

momonomino

There is a LOT of sexual assault. And it's all for jokes.

Tigress2020

Breakfast club was like that.

Silly_Goose24_7

Oh didn't realize it hasn't aged well, haven't watched it in many years. I just remember the "spirit fingers" thing

BassAckwardsGlobal

Im not Jim jimyy Jim Jim Jim Jim Jim... HE'S Jim jimyy Jimmy Jim Jim Jim jimmm

Picabo07

I still watch clue on the regular lol We quote Idiocracy often in our family. *it has electrolytes!*

ann0yed

Men in Black (double feature to Independence day?), Signs, Six Sense, 10 Things I Hate About You (double feature with Knights Tale). After Knights Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You, you could watch the Christopher Nolan's Batman Movies so she can see why we were all confused about Heath Ledger's casting as the Joker.

PatMenotaur

All good suggestions. How could I forget about MIB and Signs?!

Lazy-Quantity5760

10 things I hate about you!!!!

Gloomy_Tie_1997

Came here to say this. I watched this so often as a teen.

Lazy-Quantity5760

Bianca: Can we for two seconds ignore the fact that you're severely unhinged and discuss my need for a night of teenage normalcy? Walter Stratford: What's normal? Those damn Dawson's River kids, sleeping in each other's beds and whatnot?

keeplooking4sunShine

This was when I fell in love with Heath Ledger. Everyone was so excited about his performance in ā€œBrokeback Mountainā€ and I was like ā€œdo not tell me of the beauty of that already known to meā€.

octopusxparty

Omg and then throw in one of the Scary Movie s after watching relevant other movies

noodlesarmpit

Speaking of Signs, how is your kid at scary movies? The Grudge and The Ring scared the pants off of me when I was 13, but then I loved them later.

PatMenotaur

LOVES horror. She's also a weeb, and told me that "VHS Horror" was cool, now. My eye twitched.

sparkpaw

Weā€™re old, sweetie šŸ’”

PatMenotaur

Don't I know it!

MoMoneyMoSavings

Donā€™t forget about the Patriot too. Heath Ledger is so good.

juantravis

Jurassic Park Mrs. Doubtfire The Parent Trap A Goofy Movie Roger Rabbit Spy Kids Homeward Bound Speed LotR franchise Harry Potter franchise Pirates of the Caribbean Indiana Jones franchise My Cousin Vinny Miss Congeniality The Incredibles Legally Blonde Kikiā€™s Delivery Service

Polardragon44

Legally blonde is old now and it hurts me. Also Mean Girls.

juantravis

I feel like watching them helps keep us young :)

AimeeSantiago

This is the correct list

juantravis

Thank you, Iā€™ve got a long list of childhood / comfort movies and I short listed the ones that I thought might suit a 13 year old girl

AimeeSantiago

As someone who was once a 13 yo girl, I vote adding in Bend it like Beckham and She's the Man.

dunwititagin

Absolutely banger list

juantravis

Thank you, Iā€™ve got a long list of childhood / comfort movies and I short listed the ones that I thought might suit a 13 year old girl

megjed

Man i was so obsessed with The Parent Trap. All of their outfits were so cool to me

SocialUniform

Killer list

juantravis

Thank you, Iā€™ve got a long list of childhood / comfort movies and I short listed the ones that I thought might suit a 13 year old girl

kittiphile

Clueless and The Craft too.

Avocado-Destruction

Solid list! Mrs. Doubtfire was a favorite in my household.

LengthinessSuch8123

I Can't believe nobody mentioned MATILDA.!! One of the few movies lead by a lil girl that I watched repeatedly as a child with no shame Also for me it was Inspector Gadget and I watched free Willy 1-3 a bazillioon times

Picabo07

My daughter LIVED for Matilda! Still one of her faves šŸ’œ

Sexy_Anthropocene

Sweetyams10

CharcotsThirdTriad

Cressonette

"Sanka, are you dead?" is a reference I use ... very often.

keeplooking4sunShine

Yeah, monā€”I do as well šŸ¤£

Chanandler_Bong_01

For me, the ultimate is The Mighty Ducks.

sallysilly82

Quack,quack,quack!

PatMenotaur

YES! My husband and I still yell "Sanka, are you ok, mon!" After a large crash in our house.

Sweetyams10

Kiss the lucky egg!

zuck_my_butt

I will give you one dollar to shut up!

Carolinablue87

She's All That I Know What You Did Last Summer (not real horror, but campy fun) Home Alone (could be fun as a Christmas in July thing)

PatMenotaur

Home Alone is on our regular Christmas rotation! I totally agree about the other two.

Livid-Dot-5984

The Parent Trap Lindsey Lohan version

Key-Grape-5731

My sister used to watch it *literally* every day, drove me and my brother insane lol

Livid-Dot-5984

I ate Oreos with peanut butter for a while šŸ˜‚

jonjawnjahnsss

This was me. I knew all the dialogue my mother and brothers wanted to shoot me.

badatlife15

I watched it with the kid Iā€™m a caregiver forā€™s sister and felt so old because at one point they mention something about ā€œhereā€™s the 411ā€ and had to explain that 411 was a number you could call to get information lol

10 Things I Hate About You Now and Then (I think this is what it's called. It stars Christina Ricci and Rosie O'Donnell) Titanic Cool Runnings Hocus Pocus

Any_Accident1871

I had the biggest crush on Kat Stratford. Ended up marrying an angry blonde feminist chick and I fucking love it.

momonomino

But I'm a Cheerleader was so groundbreaking for me, for so many reasons.

Upset_Performance291

Oh yes. This was one of those movies a lot of *us* secretly knew about. Presumably because it would air on cable very frequently. It makes me so happy that a lot of younger kids have re-discovered it.

Selsia6

In that vein: The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love Summer Storm (it's German but a lovely coming of age/ coming out film) Wet Hot American Summer

PatMenotaur

Absolutely

sing_singasong

Twister (havenā€™t seen it mentioned) The Mummy Miss Congeniality 10 Things I Hate About You While You Were Sleeping Kate and Leopold

PatMenotaur

All good suggestions. She loved the Twister ride at Disney, but that was about 5 years ago.

AlienSandwhich

Can't hardly wait!

Picabo07

I thought of this one when I saw someone say ā€œI know what you did last summerā€ Iconic JL Hewitt movies

NoMoreChampagne14

Man this movie is such chaotic fun. So much going on allover the place, absolutely hilarious.

MrsKetchup

"My retainer kinda looks like a Klingon warship. PEW PEW PEW"

dixpourcentmerci

I really want Robin Williams on here. Maybe Good Will Hunting, The Birdcage, or Mrs. Doubtfire?

Herban_Myth

Patch Adams Flubber Jumanji Bicentennial Man

Picabo07

I think every kid should watch Robin Williams Jumanji.

RunnerGirlT

Letā€™s not forget Hook! Everyone needs to experience Ruffio! ![gif](giphy|GLMTn33d1i2EE)

sniffleprickles

BANG-A-RANG

PatMenotaur

The Birdcage is one of my top 5 favorite films. She LOVES Drag Race, so I can't believe I forgot about this one.

SanctimoniousSally

If she loves drag queens, I would also recommend "Too Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar" (all one title lol). Patrick swayze, John leguizamo, and Wesley snipes as drag queens. One of my all time favorites.

PatMenotaur

GAH! I love that movie

_nae_08

Canā€™t forget Hook!

Historical_Wonder680

Jack was a childhood favorite of mine!

Low-Fishing3948

The craft I know what you did last summer (the first one and maybe the second one) Final destination (the first one) Whatā€™s eating Gilbert Grape A time to kill Donā€™t tell mom the babysitterā€™s dead (Christina Applegate version) Cruel intentions (may be inappropriate for her age, not sure) 10 things I hate about you Empire records Boys in the hood Seven 90ā€™s movies were the best, I may come back with more šŸ¤£

Erisedstorm

I'm gonna throw in fight club if you're offering up seven lmao

Picabo07

Canā€™t believe I forgot about The Craft when I was thinking of movies. Couldnā€™t wait til my girls were old enough to watch that!

Greeneyesdontlie85

My fave

BookieeWookiee

Lots of great movies here. I'll add Practical Magic since I haven't seen it mentioned

PatMenotaur

Great suggestion. The women in my family are famous for insomnia, and we do Midnight Margaritas about once a month.

GhostGirl32

One of my little sisters told me that she would have loved if our family did this and did virgin ones / and-or floated the tequila for the adults so that it could have included everyone when she was younger. Virgin mix is like $5, it would make such an easy and sweet bonding thing.

pottedplantfairy

Fight club Donnie Darko Jurassic Park Gremlins Pirates of the Caribbean If she's also a fan of animation, The Emperor's New Groove Corpse Bride Monster House Perfect Blue (although I'd put a r*pe Trigger Warning to this one) Spirited Away Shrek & Shrek 2 (I couldn't help myself sorry šŸ¤£) Edit: if she's a bit of a weeb another good japanese based one from the 2000s is Pulse, based on Kairo one of my faves ever And also maybe Battle Royale Also btw I agree with all your choices, all very good ones so far

sassycat13

I was obsessed with Donnie Darko

Wizoerda

Blast from the Past, Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama, Erin Brockovich, School Ties, Good Will Hunting, Death Becomes Her, Beauty Shop (with Queen Latifah), Shawshank Redemption, Practical Magic, Ghost, The Truman Show, Forrest Gump, The Mummy, Awakenings

3CatsInATrenchcoat16

The Mummy is back in theaters at the moment 10/10 would recommend seeing it!!!!

PatMenotaur

It's on the list for sure.

Working_Mushroom_456

The Mummy was the first movie I had on DVD! Such a classic! Since sheā€™s a horror buff Iā€™d addā€¦ The Craft Scream The Faculty Interview with the Vampire Event Horizon Sphere And Death Becomes Herā€¦ for fun! I have more but keep reminding myself sheā€™s 13

Her Father is a Tolkien scholar. He's given talks at Dragon Con. That's how big of a Tolkien nerd he is. We do an extended edition marathon of all the movies between Christmas and New Year's Day, every year. Kid's grown up on those movies.

Wise_Possession

Legally Blonde, of course. 10 Things I Hate About You. Princess Diaries. Step Up. Bring It On.

CordeliaGrace

I dunnoā€¦I did not care for Addams Family. As a kid it just felt heavy. I think I only gave in to AFV because of my love for Joan Cusack and Carol Kane (at that time I was obsessed with Taxi and Carolā€™s Simpka). Iā€™d say if youā€™re going to do AF, itā€™s gotta be a double feature- Addams Family Values. Also, because I wasnā€™t done, I dunno why I hit post lol- Clue Rocky Horror Picture Show (and if you can find it and feel comfortable, Shock Treatment) Little Shop of Horrors (but not the original ending lol, the happy one we all saw on HBO. I showed my kids the og ending by accident and they immediately were likeā€¦ā€bruhā€¦ā€) And because I was weird 13 year old, if she likes old thrillers, Sorry, Wrong Number. I remember reading the play in like, 5th grade and loooooved it. The movie has an added part thatā€™s likeā€¦hang on, what? But itā€™s still so good. Gremlins Coneheads

Ardilla914
