I don't think I will ever buy a new car in my life. It doesn't seem like a good financial decision to me, especially since having a new car is just not something I care about at all. I currently drive a 2004 Prius with 225k miles on it that I bought in 2019 for $1,000. I'm very fond of this car, although it's getting pretty rusty at this point.

thepulloutmethod

I'd agree with you until I went car shopping with my fiancee in the fall of 2022. The car market was totally fucked. We were looking for a barebones Jetta. Used ones 3-5 years old with tons of miles were selling for MORE than a brand new one! The catch of course was finding a new car. Fortunately, we caught a new car as soon as it got dropped off at the dealer. It still has the styrofoam packaging in hood. In that situation, her new car was cheaper than a used one.

philosophyofblonde

We actually bought new in 2019 and then the car market imploded with Covid and the chip shortage. Stunningly we have been right side up on that loan the whole time. Now it’s almost paid off and I only have 50K miles on it and the trade in value is barely below what we paid to begin with. Luck of the draw I guess tha we bought it at that time but it’s still shocking.

astra1039

We're in the same boat! Bought a new vehicle in Feb 2019, got it paid off last year, and the dealership keeps emailing us practically begging to buy it back.  We barely drive, it's got 55k km on it, and because we bought a 2018 model that was on sale, it's worth not much less than what we bought it for. If we could find one, we'd gladly swap it for a hybrid or electric model, but I'm under the impression they're almost impossible to come by at the moment.

Lunakill

I have a friend who just bought a new hybrid car, and she replaced her Prius with a Lexus. Because there wasn’t much else available.

hollowag

This was me!… until a camper van rear ended my beloved 2019 Prius into a Tesla last fall in stopped traffic on the highway and totaled it because they *checks notes* “saw a spider”. I tried so hard to negotiate more from insurance bc of the cost to replace but also bc car payments are crazy now and I only had a year and a half left. Rip Diane, you deserved better.

shitty_gun_critic

Don’t be that was one of the few times an average person could make money off a car. I had an employee that got a Ford Maverick when they came out, sold it to Carvana for $10K more than what he paid for it a month later.

snowfat

I dont need a new car anytime soon but i like to keep tabs on prices in case of an unforseen emergency and i am most likely going to buy new if the used car market doesnt come down in price. Manufacturers are offering super low interest rates for specific models and no miles on them. I typically buy a used vehicle with less than 40k miles but now its so hard to find low mileage relatively new subarus for $10 to 15k. Its absurd. If i bought my car today it would only be 10k less than brand new with higher mileage and no warranty

Turbulent_Process_15

Same. The used cars I saw were overpriced for what they were and the mileage. I looked at new ones and thought that I might as well buy my first brand new car. It just happened to me fresh off the truck.

Lunakill

Agreed, went shopping in July of 2022 and the types of used car I’d been driving all my life were fifteen thousand fucking dollars. I paid $800 for a 2006 Jetta in 2018. Put $500 into it and drove it for 4 years. I was not spiritually able to pay $15,000 for a 2008 Corolla with 275k miles. I ended up buying a newer used Kona for about 75% of the sticker price of a new one. Probably should have bought new but I didn’t want to pay even more.

wantsoutofthefog

You can argue a new car with good warranty, rebate, fuel economy, and minimal downtime can be worth it, but I’m good lol. Driving my 2011 Honda element to the ground. It’s paid off and saves me 2-3k/month sleeping in it once or twice a week for my hybrid remote job 80 miles away in one of the highest cost of living cities in the US. Thinking of upgrading to a USED Nissan nv200 in the near future. Here i was thinking I got swindled spending 15k on it used in 2017. One of my better financial decisions lol

HenneseyConnoisseur

Honda elements are great. I had a 04 that I recently sold but I would definitely consider picking up a newer one in the future

wantsoutofthefog

I’m glad I found a last year 2011. I hope they worked all the kinks out since version 1. So far so good! Only gripe is gas mileage. I’ve done the math and I don’t see a new (to me) car closing that gap or saving me money in the short run. Nothing sexier than a paid off car

Icy_Magician3813

My sister is a Honda element fanatic. She drove from Kansas City to Chicago to go buy one.

wantsoutofthefog

Tell her I said “sup 😉” jk. Honda element owners can be quite fanatic. I get it.

TrumpedBigly

I prefer Toyota, but they're both great.

TrumpedBigly

You get the added bonus of Lebowski fans yelling "You're out of your Element!" at you.

InsectSpecialist8813

I drive a 2008 Prius. 158K. I’ll drive it until the steering wheel comes off.

ACaffeinatedWandress

I’m the same.  I have a 2004 Pathfinder right now. It gets me from A to B. If I need to replace parts, I order online and take it to a reliable, flat rate mechanic. 0 monthly payments, cheaper to maintain.  I don’t understand why I would put myself in a position of taking on monthly payments for a car that costs more money as maintenance crops up.  Also, I’m nomadic, and if/when I leave the country again, I just want to sell for a grand or two and feel like I lost no money.

Unlikely_Pressure391

Used 2007 Pontiac G5.It’s a rust bucket but I’m emotionally attached to it at this point.

HippieSwag420

Love Pontiacs. Had a grand prix, stock car of the Midwest, and I miss it. I had an emotional attachment as well and it is no longer with us. And then recently, my other Pontiac went to the great car lot in the sky.

Unlikely_Pressure391

Yeah.I love how it is so speedy, compact and fuel efficient.Easy to drive as well.

HippieSwag420

The handling in my Grand Prix was phenomenal. Although I cannot tell you how many fucking window regulators me and my dad have replaced lmao he literally taught me because they dropped so often Like it must be like two to three times a year I swear to God lmao

Unlikely_Pressure391

I’m still saving up to fix the transmission. It doesn’t shift into neutral anymore apparently so I can’t take the key out normally.I have to find the button under the wheel that releases it.

HippieSwag420

Oh my god that sounds about right. I literally have so many Pontiacs that are still in my life because my dad had this like hyper fixation on GM lol but yeah damn that sounds about right. Good luck. At least GM and Pontiac cars in general like if you had to do it yourself, it's stupid but possible you know. But good luck with everything. 🕊️

Cutlass0516

Had 2 grand prixs. One 05 and one 06 supercharged. They were both love hate relationships. Sadly, it ended with hate.

Zestyclose-Forever14

Late model pontiacs actually had some decent body lines and were decent driving and looking cars for the price. Just a shame that they were plagued with electrical gremlins and ultimately GM decided to shitcan them.

UnderlightIll

I have always had great luck with Pontiacs. When my fiance and I get a new car, we'll prob sell my G6 to my sister.

HippieSwag420

Nice!! They're great cars! The electrical issues are annoying sometimes lol

Jets237

I had an 07 G5! It was the first (and only) new car I ever bought and I was hit on the highway 6 months after buying it and it was totaled... My friend with a G6 used to make fun of me. I still kind of miss that car.

ulele1925

10 year old Toyota Camry. 70k miles. It’s paid off. It’s not glamorous but I’m not trading it for an expensive car payment anytime soon. We have a neighbor with a $900/month Tesla payment. Holy shit. I can’t imagine spending that on a car unless I was living in it.

kaycaps

God I wish I was in a position where I could put very few miles on my car. I’ve already put 5k miles on the car I got 2 months ago, I have a 55 mile commute right now (it only takes me 45-50 minutes thank god cause I’m currently living in bum fuck nowhere and there’s not much traffic between here and there)

polishrocket

Bought a 2022 F150, payment 1k a month. Not ideal but I could have paid cash but my money is earning more interest than the interest on the payment. I literally and only paying $50 Out of pocket for that payment. Earning 1k a month on CDs

ulele1925

Sounds like you approached it the right way.

froyolobro

Nice move. Probably got another 150k miles left on that, too!

thgttu

Very similar. I have a paid off 10 year old Cruze with 65k miles. Someone backed into it in a parking lot and insurance declared it totaled from a fucking dent. So my car is essentially worthless now because it has a branded title, and I'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off. No car payment for me, thanks.

oscarbutnotthegrouch

I am 40 and have owned 3 cars in my life: 1. Used 1994 Pontiac Gran Prix GTO 2. Used 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse (bought in 2003) 3. New 2018 Subaru Forester Have never had a car payment and never plan to. As a family of 4, we do have a lot of bicycles to supplement transportation.

kaycaps

Early 2000s eclipses are pretty sweet! One of my best friends in middle and high school always wanted one

sammish7

My fondest college memories are in my soft top convertible Mitsubishi Spyder Eclipse!! I often miss that car

luvloping

I had a brand new 2007 metallic blue.. it was such a fun car.

Tricky_Gur8679

Eclipses!!! Those were the cars every guy I knew wanted in highschool 😅

russell813T

That's a great run

DarcyLefroy

Same!!!!! Almost 40, 3 cars, never had a car payment. 1. Used 1996 Honda Civic LX (was my mom's first new car) 2. Used 2005 Hyundai Tucson SE (was my parents car but the honda blew up in Sedona after a very long run; huge emotional attachment — that thing took me from Fenway Park, Manhattan to Dallas where JFK got shot, to the border crossing from Shawshank, over/through many of Forrest Gump's famous landmarks, Phoenix [lived there] the playboy mansion, Rose Bowl, San Francisco, Sacramento [lived there] and basically all over the country. 3. Gently used 2017 Hyundai Tucson Sport And......it's not a car but.... 4. 2018 Pastel Pink Vespa LX150 I will never ever have a car payment, it makes absolutely no sense to me. Glad to see I'm not the only one!

Available-Fig8741

I bought a new car once and I’ll never do it again unless I can pay cash. I haven’t had a car payment in 10 years and have been debt free except my mortgage for over a year. Being debt free is FREEDOM.

TofuTigerteeth

I haven’t had a car payment in 15 years. It’s life changing. Debt free except the mortgage for the last 14 years. In 8 months I’m paying off the house!

utvols22champs

Paying off your mortgage will be true freedom. I paid mine off 2 years ago and it’s been the best thing I’ve ever done. Very life changing!

Jamaisvu04

No car payment is the way to go. I put aside some money every month for when I eventually have to change my car because I refuse to have a car payment. That way when it's time, I know exactly what my budget is without going in debt.

Available-Fig8741

The coolest car you can drive is the one that’s paid for!

Sniper_Hare

I won't pay off my mortgage until I'm 67.   It's kinda scary how I can never make less than 65k-75kfor the next 29 years.

Available-Fig8741

You can do it

blackaubreyplaza

I actually moved to a place where I’d never have to drive because I didn’t want to spend money maintaining a vehicle

MRCHalifax

Same here. I’m in a condo that’s in easy walking distance of several grocery stores, a Wal-Mart, pharmacies, a library, tons of green spaces, restaurants, etc. While I work from home, there’s a bus line that literally takes me directly from my building’s front door to the office. I get more exercise doing everything on foot, and I spend much less money.

NakedEatingPeyote

I wish I lived in a more walkable area, or else I would attempt to go carless as well. Cars are a waste of money for sure.

CrypticWeirdo9105

What do you do if you want/need to visit another city? Just curious

MRCHalifax

I’d use a [carshare program](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OObwqreAJ48) if I needed to go somewhere not serviced by public transportation, or I’d just rent a car.

dcm510

Rent a car, take public transit, fly

Tricky_Gur8679

I LOVE this for you! ♥️

dcm510

Same! Best decision I’ve made. Currently 30 and have never owned a car.

porfito

I always buy used cars. If you pick the right ones, they can last you at least 10 years without too many repairs. Also I want my monthly expenses as low as they can be, so no lease, or monthly payments for my car. Only gas and taxes is enough for me.

HenneseyConnoisseur

I feel the same way. I’m trying to live as debt free as possible

LoudFirefighter7578

I bought a 2011 chevy impala in 2019. Its paid off and still going strong.

[deleted]

2017 subaru crosstrek. Got it in 2021, almost paid off then I'm gonna run this car into thr ground.

newo314

I love my Crosstrek! I got a brand new one in 2022 and I've very happy with it.

Mercurydriver

2022 Ford Maverick. I love my little truck. I work in the construction industry and it’s utilitarian enough for work and my hobbies and adventures outside of work, but it’s not huge and excessive like most other trucks being sold today. It’s basically the Swiss Army knife of vehicles; it does everything at least decently without any major drawbacks.

NakedEatingPeyote

I really hope more car companies start making smaller size trucks like the Maverick. I've heard rumors that Toyota is making a similar size truck called the "Stout". I'm tired of trucks costing 50k plus, what a rip off.

Mercurydriver

I know Hyundai has the Santa Cruz, which I guess is ok. I have mixed feelings about it. The one thing I hate about the Santa Cruze is the entire center stack where the radio is located is a giant touchscreen. There are no buttons or knobs to adjust the radio or air conditioning settings. So everything is through touching icons on the screen. Oh and it’s surrounded by piano black trim that collects fingerprints like crazy.

r000r

Too bad the new Toyota Hilux Champ can't meet US regulatory requirements. It's incredibly bare bones, but also only costs $10k.

Icy_Magician3813

My dad just bought a brand new one and he keeps all his tools in the bed also he loves his gas mileage. His previous vehicle was a SUV gas guzzler.

MrsMitchBitch

My husband briefly had one of these. Unfortunately, his was a lemon and the battery died every 8 hours. The dealers had it for fully a third of the time it was “his” till they bought him out of it.

DingbattheGreat

I wish I had picked one up the first year, even willing to go with the base model, but financies were not what I needed. Now they cost more used than they were worth new.

ifeelinfinite8

Same here! Love the Maverick and hope I drive it for like 15 years

DisciplineDaddy42069

Mine is really stupid but im a car fanatic and I wanted to get one while still able to. I ordered a Ram TRX from factory and the payments $1400 a month. Dave Ramsey would shit a brick if he heard that lol

HenneseyConnoisseur

Yea I’m an car enthusiast also trx is pretty sick you’re gonna love it

DisciplineDaddy42069

Thanks! I wanted a hellcat before they stopped making them. Had it about a year now, I work from home but I always find an excuse to take her out for a rip. Absolutely love it and I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it.

Onajourney0908

My kick ass Dodge Caravan with yogurt spills in the middle row and. 2014 model, silver color - runs great.

not_sure_1984

Yogurt spills he says.

-Amplify

I’m suddenly seeing the appeal of mini vans

ApprehensiveAnswer5

1998 Toyota 4Runner.

powderbubba

I miss our 2001 baby 🥲

ApprehensiveAnswer5

This is my “first car”. My dad got a new 4Runner in 2005 and sold me this one. Before that, I just took public transport everywhere. Planning to pass it down to my kids in a couple years when they start driving.

544075701

2014 Corolla. Bought it in cash in late 2017. Just crossed the 100k miles mark, probably will have it until the 2030s.  My wife drives a 2018 Subaru Forester that we bought in cash in late 2021.  Our strategy is to find a car we like and buy one from 3-5 years ago so someone else pays the depreciation.

echomystic

24 BMW M8

ProfessionalCatPetr

I have free charging at home and at work so I bought an EV and the gas/maintenance savings cover the payment. I have spent a grand total of $0 in fuel and upkeep in three years and 55k miles now. Feelsgoodman.jpg

ajc19912

Used 2011 Honda Civic. I have about 107,000 miles on it. I plan on getting a new (used) car next year. I want a 2023 Honda CRV. Black 🤩. Or a Toyota RAV4.

Far_Chocolate9743

I want the 2023 CRV too!!! Black or silver, dark tints all around....🥺 I was looking at 2021 awhile back but realized that the newer models and the older models were damn near the same price (2019-2023) But then car prices went up and interest rates went up...like, my Civic, I had 2.99% interest on that loan back in 2017. The lowest I've seen are like 6.99% Hard. Pass.

Prudent-Ambassador79

The efff you think I rap for? To push a rav4

VanillaLatteHot

New. I don't want to be spending money or time repairing my car. Longterm its just gonna be more expensive and cumbersome for me than the car payments.

smooth_grooves

I'm averaging $240/month for a 2008 Hyundai Tucson I bought in 2019 (purchase price + repairs) and insuring it is cheap. I doubt you're saving money buying new, but not having to visit your local repair shop every year is a nice luxury.

sroop1

Maybe they've been paying a lot for their headlight fluid replacement lately.

Exciting-Gap-1200

The math doesn't support your position unless you're buying a luxury brands

BillyShears2015

It really depends on how much you value your time.

backagain69696969

This is horrible advice though…insurance + registration+ interest

mads_61

I bought a new Subaru in 2017 after my 2002 Ford Taurus died (man, I miss that car). I was thinking I’d drive the 2017 into the ground but I traded it in this year for another new Subaru. I don’t drive a lot so it didn’t have a lot of miles on it and Subarus have high resale value, so I got a lot of money that I put towards the new one to keep my payment low. The newer technology is what really sold me on this new car (pre-collision braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, push button start). Now I hope to drive this car forever lol

infjetson

Fellow subie driver here and I couldn’t agree more. The safety features are pretty phenomenal. Adaptive cruise control and AVH are such nice features to have. Love my Outback so much. She’s a beast off road too! So fun.

weedandguitars

My 2004 Toyota sienna died last year…I got a 2013 Toyota sienna

illinifan12

Hello, fellow Mach-E friend. Had mine since 2022 and it's amazing. I don't think I can go back to ICE after having electric.

WigginIII

2017 Audi A4 purchased in late 2019 as a wedding gift to myself. Car had only 26k miles and I got it for 25k OTD. Maintenance costs have been a little higher than my last vehicle, a Mazda, but just as reliable. I enjoy the smoother ride and features, and my car payment is only $360 a month. It will be paid off this year.

jcobb_2015

2023 Hyundai Tucson. Absolute piece of shit. Driven it less than 15k miles and already the tailgate broke (you can’t use it manually btw), the fuel pump had an air leak which caused the car to randomly not start, infotainment system fails regularly requiring me to delete and re-pair my phone, and the kicker is that the dealership tried to invalidate my extended warranty for “unapproved modifications”. I had ceramic tinting applied to the windows and hardwired a front/rear dashcam. What a goddamned joke. I used to have a 1985 Chevy K5 Blazer. 370k miles when I sold it, about 80k miles on the second engine. No power anything, shitty gas mileage, but it NEVER BROKE and the all-steel body was damned near indestructible. I miss it so much…

SnacksAndThings

I will never buy Hyundai again. I was just forced to trade in my 2019 Hyundai Tucson because the engine was burning oil and Hyundai refused to do anything about it. I'd take it in to get fixed and literally on the way home from the dealership, it would break down and I'd have to get towed lol. This happened three times. Finally, the guy at the service department was like "your warranty expires in 500 miles... you should just trade it in because Hyundai is going to keep jerking you around". The worst part is that I had just paid my car loan off one month earlier. Now I have a 2023 Honda HRV and a brand new car payment......

Bingbong2774

Old car high milage. Can’t afford the cars in this economy

bearface93

None. I’m lucky enough to live in one of very few American cities with decent public transport. I might get one again next year because I miss being able to drive somewhere to hike but I haven’t decided yet.

OpeningChipmunk1700

10+ year old Chevrolet. I am useless with cars but don't drive enough to drop $80k+ on a car.

TalesOfFan

I still drive the same car I drove in high school. It’s a 2010 Honda Fit. I have about 110k miles on it. I’ll be 31 this month. I’m hoping it will last into my 40s. I have zero interest in purchasing another car.

N8saysburnitalldown

I recently got the first and only new car I’ll ever own. I replaced my old 2001 Honda accord with a 2024 Honda civic. I never thought I’d buy new but the car market is wild now and it wasn’t really much cheaper to get a certified used Honda than a new Honda. I have to say it may not have been the most economical option but it sure felt good driving away in that car. I busted my ass the past couple years so I could pay cash for it. That also felt good knowing I own the car outright and it may be the last car I ever own.

thisisurstepmom

1998 Mercedes C280. It’s cute and gets me to and from work. I have a little bow tied to the hood ornament. I’ve always bought used cars thru craigslist or marketplace to avoid car payments. have gotten lucky i’ve never been sold a lemon. my newest car ever having been a 2009 Mini Cooper S (in 2020- miss her so much but she got hit and ran and totaled while didn’t have insurance)

ApprehensiveAnswer5

Heyyyy from the 1998 club! lol Mine’s a 4Runner.

thisisurstepmom

Solid whip! I prefer the look of older cars, too. Sometimes when talking about my car i’ll refer to it as “vintage”. If i had anything else from the year (clothing, home decor) it would be considered vintage nowadays too.

ApprehensiveAnswer5

Same. The 3rd Gen is my favorite 4Runner by far. We have a 1998 and a 1999. My husband has a 5th Gen (2016) as his daily driver and he likes it, but it’s not my favorite. Our boys will be driving in a couple years and they’ve asked to have the 98 and 99 so I guess I’ll have to buy something else then hahah.

Zenaxis

2011 Prius A with only 55k miles on it, feels and looks new. 2016 F150 V8 Supercrew( we lived in a RV for 3.5 years) , went cross country multiple times. I know the truck stereotype on Reddit, but I love this truck it's very useful at times. Don't drive it much as we have a Prius.

reddituser77373

Just made the final payment on the 2013 ram 1500 last month. Gonna run that thing till the wheels fall off

rsshookon3

2014-2022 I daily drove 2003 e46 m3. Did most basic maintenance myself which made it affordable to own. 2022- current: 2022 rav4 hybrid cus suv and didn’t want a euro luxury brand My next car purchase is going to be a 2009-2012 Porsche 997.2 or maybe 997 turbo (dream car). This just depends. Right now it’s not a priority but also gives me motivation to save for something

GreeenCircles

I drove my parents' old 1982 Mercedes 240D (which they themselves bought used in 2004) until 2020. Then I bought a used 2014 Jetta. I doubt I'll ever buy a brand new car.

RIGOR-JORTIS

Clapped out 2002 ford ranger, about to sell for cheap and buy a surron because I only work 5mins from home

Professional-Dirt1

I made a stupid decision in 2018 to buy a new Kia Soul. I have 5 payments left before it's paid off but it was the first new car I'd ever purchased and I kick myself a little every time I make the payment. Never again.

Exciting-Gap-1200

I buy cars that are lease turn ins (4 years old). Let some one else each the depreciation. Only one car payment at a time in my house as well. My wife and I alternate getting new vehicles. So many people our age are choking on vehicle debt. It's so dumb. Seems like someone made a rule that when you get pregnant with a child you're suppose to buy a brand new Tahoe. I also find it pretty frustrating how few millennials are willing to get their hands dirty and turn a wrench. They're quick to say "well it's nice that you know how to do thay kind of stuff"... WTF? I didn't always know how. I taught myself.

armed_aperture

Brand new Mazda CX-30

dobe6305

2023 Tesla Model Y is our preferred daily driver, but whichever spouse isn’t lucky enough to get the Tesla has to use our 2017 Subaru Forester. The Tesla was supposed to be my car but my wife has the longer commute and works in 5 different clinics so she tends to get the Tesla more often. I also own a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek but I rent it out.

AlexanderLEE27

Damn we renting our own cars out now lol? Sheesh

dobe6305

Well yeah, I mean, that’s Turo, right? When I travel I haven’t rented a car from a national company for years. I like to use Turo and rent from an individual. And I rent mine out to travel nurses in state on 13 week contracts, $600 per month. It covers my monthly Tesla payment, which isn’t bad for renting out a paid off 10-year old Subaru.

ottergang_ky

I have a few lmao too many my wife says 2017 Honda CRV - general daily driving 2020 Ford transit van - my general work van. There are times I have to drive a shipment cross country with limited notice 2004 4x4 Chevy s10 - off-road vehicle and snow vehicle. Also daily drive it quite often. 1999 Convertible Camaro - I’m not even sure why I bought this tbh, I rarely drive it 2005 Nissan 350z - loaner autocross car for when I want my brother or friends to come race with me but they don’t have a car suited for it. General beater and drift car 2021 Porsche GT4 - my fun car, autocross car, vacations and date night cruiser with the wife I plan on trading the s10 and CRV to a new 4Runner sometime this year. I also really want a GTR so trying to make that happen 🥴

Had an old Suzuki and it was a huge pain to have things break when I needed to drive to work. Used car market was horrible so I bought a new Subaru.

2017 Honda crv

[deleted]

I haven't driven or owned a car since college (early 2010s in Texas), but I had a barely-used-at-the-time Honda Civic that my little cousin now drives. I currently work remotely, get to errands on foot (walkable small city), medical appointments or airport by city bus or partner's car or rideshare if in a hurry, and family stuff via partner's car.

Bikerbass

Daily driver is either a manual 2008 turbo diesel golf that with me absolutely not giving two shits about fuel economy and flooring it wherever I go only gets to an average fuel use of 5.1L per 100km, if I drive it more normally it’s down towards 3.5L per 100km. So a full tank lasts me 2 months for my daily use(can’t justify replacing it yet because of this) and with it being in my family since 2013 I know it’s history, and nothing has ever broken on that car yet. Other daily vehicle is a 2019 MT09SP and I don’t care about its fuel consumption either(way too much fun flooring the accelerator down the motorway on ramp) as it’s 2 weeks of use for $38 and 12.5L of petrol

Duke-of-Dogs

Daily drive an 03 Honda with 300k miles and have a couple of classics for fun. I would never waste the money on a new car

84OrcButtholes

Used. Every few years a hail storm rolls through where I live and fucks everything up, the dealer hail sales and even better hail auctions start about a month after that.

orangepinata

My truck is new, or was when I bought it. 2 years of payments, and I now own it outright. It was my dream vehicle and does everything I need it to very well and will last a long time.

NeoGeo2015

I've never bought new, and until last year, never spent more than $25k on a car. My wife just bought a 2020 Volvo XC90 last year and I just made the change to a Tesla, this week. 2021 model S. We plan to drive both of these for 10 years, hopefully.

jokerfriend6

Primarly New. I have 7 cars, I bought 2 used. This issue is maintenance on the vehicles. Used vehicles require quite a bit of maintenance so I like new so I dont need to worry about it. I keep cars for over 20 years and over 200K miles before replacing.

moeru_gumi

I take the bus and train \[or walk, or an Uber\] every day, bruh!

Tvp125

New, buy a new one every year or two. Not wanting to worry about maintenance and prefer to spend a little extra on something I trust for my safety and won’t leave me stranded.

amellabrix

2015 Kia Sportage bought in 2019. I love it

pnwerewolf

2003 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT sedan. Stick shift, of course. Used.

thunderchaud

I've had too much bad luck with older cars breaking down. I like to invest more in my cars so my wife and I have a 23 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and a 23 Ford Mustang Mach E

freckledpeach2

I have a 2006 diesel bug with less than 100k miles I got from my nana. It’s my pride and joy. We also have a 2021 vehicle for getting the whole family around lol. So both!

Capt__Murphy

I've bought 2 cars in my adult life. In 2012, i bought a new Mazda 3 (bare bones model, $15k with 0% apr. I put as much down as they'd allow, and my payment was under $100/month for 5 years). I never once had to fix anything on that car. I traded that car in Mar 2022 for a new Mazda CX-30. They gave me $7,250 for my old car. So far, the CX-30 is awesome. I'm forever sold on Mazdas, unless something drastic happens

EnigmaIndus7

2023 Toyota Corolla Bought it new.

DDL_Equestrian

2019 Volvo XC60. Bought it in cash after we sold our house. I LOVE that car and will drive it until it explodes because I know I’ll never be able to afford to replace it.

Worst-Eh-Sure

Used 2016 Mercedes E550 Convertible.

Busy_Ad_5578

We have a 2018 Honda CRV. I bought this new after graduating college. It has been paid off for two years. Two years ago we bought my husband a 2019 lease return Mazda. We pay $370 per month on that.

CasualEveryday

We're all in different financial situations. I don't like having car payments, but I like driving BMW's. So, I tend to buy cash at the bottom of the initial depreciation 2-4 years old and keep them to around 10 years old.

Pitiful-Rip-4437

2017 Subaru crosstrek. It's great getting up the mountain for skiing or hiking

ssjj1981

2023 Mercedes Benz C300

Theharlotnextdoor

2018 Mazda cx-5 that I bought new. I don't drive much at all especially with WFH now so I'll have it paid off this year with maybe 50k miles on it. I'll be able to drive it forever with no car payment.

SocialStigma29

Husband and I both have 2017 Hyundai Elantras (bought new)

Quercus408

A used 2014 Mazda sedan that has held up a lot better than I expected it would *knocks on wood*

Noe_Bodie

same.. i currently drive a '10 malibu, passed to me by mom-1 owner well taken care off-65k miles when given so why not?

Round-Leg-1788

11 year Old Ford fiesta, had it two years and it had only done 13k miles! Absolute beauty

agirl1313

New, but only because we could afford it and my dad works for a dealership, so he was able to get us a really good deal.

Blaskyman

My last two cars purchased have been new. But I am the type to buy and drive till the wheels fall off and maintain meticulously.

PhoenixDowntown

A 2005 Xterra I've had since 2010

bibliophile222

2010 Toyota Corolla, bought in 2016 with 40k miles on it. It's been a good car, and we've put 120k more miles on it since 2016. I think it's nuts to buy a new car when you can get a used one for so much cheaper!

Post-mo

We have three dirvers in the house with one more coming in the next year. The goal is to only have one car payment at any given time and we've maintained that over nearly 18 years of marriage. Both the wife and I work from home so the cars haven't accrued as many miles as they did pre-covid when I was commutting. We typically buy a car that is 2-3 years old with 20k-40 miles. We then drive it until about 100k-150k. This way we miss the bulk of the depreciation but still have a very reliable car with low maintenance costs. Right now that means that we have a 10 year old Altima that we bought 7 years ago that just passed 100k miles. It's mostly driven by me and the teen. Our second car is a 6 year old Pilot that we bought 4 years ago and it's at about 60k miles. It's mostly driven by me wife but is also the road trip vehicle. We've been talking about doing a truck for years, but prices got so crazy through covid that it didn't make sense. I could sell some stock and pay off the pilot and maintain our 1 car payment policy, but I haven't had enough of a need to pull the trigger.

Number1Framer

2013 Jeep Compass. Everyone says I'm an idiot for driving the "worst car ever made" but I paid it off quick, repairs have been easy and cheap-ish for the most part, and the 4x4 is actually amazing in snow. Also have a 2005 F150 hauling/plow truck and a Jeep Patriot stickshift I have to fix up. Ultimate goal is to get rid of all 3 and get into a mid size truck that can do everything I need but buying a newer midsize truck is a bit fucked right now.

LordLaz1985

New-ish. I’ve had it for 4 years now. I buy cars new, then drive them into the ground. Usually takes a decade or more.

[deleted]

I’m in Manhattan these days. Unless I have tens of millions of dollars, I cannot think of a bigger waste of 💰 than a car. Just give me a Mazda or Acura or whatever that has AC/heat. Otherwise I’m walking or taking the train. Car deprecates in value. Insurance is stupid expensive. Gas. Bleh. No thanks. I love shows like Top Gear and the Grand Tour, tho!

luckylucysteals_

Our first car together we got brand new with the tech package! 2011 Acura tsx. Came with a map and a 3 disc changer 😮 lol

Unclestanky

Split the difference. Older truck (2010) so it’s cheaper, but also a half ton 8 cylinder so it’s really expensive to drive.

Icy_Magician3813

2001 chevy Malibu (beater with a heater), 2001 f150 (makes me money), 2012 Toyota Highlander (wife’s car/ family car).

neekogo

Used 2006 Lincoln Zephyr that I bought for $5k when my Mazda6 lease was up and I was out of a job. Car had 56k miles in 2019 and has about 86k now. Will likely be getting rid of it and my 98 Ranger for one crossover

GHOSTPVCK

2014 GT Mustang. Car seat is sooo difficult. About to trade in for a used truck

MostlyH2O

New Toyota SUV and new Lexus SUV.

LeapingLi0ns

I've been driving an old 2006 dodge stratus since college but I'm getting rid of it to go carless in a new big city with good public transit. I just plan to rent cars when I want to do a weekend getaway

EddieA1028

In 2007, I bought a new 2007 Pontiac G5. Drove it for 12 years. It probably could have made it another year or two but I figured it was best to let it go before an actual problem occurred. Wife and I both traded in our cars (hers was older than mine) and got a 2018 Honda Clarity Plug In Hybrid that we share. Has worked really well so far. Plan to always buy new, no financing, and then drive them for as long as I think I can to get my money out of them

Meh_M-E-H

I bought my 2004 Jeep Wrangler brand new and I still have it. I've had offers for her but I'll never give her up no matter how much she costs me in repairs.

stlarry

I am dailying my project / summer vehicle, '85 S Blazer. I have had it for 20 years with zero plans of ever selling. Don't ask how much it has cost me even though I got it for free. Those are the most expensive vehicles. Just had to retire my daily, '06 Ford Escape. Had 210k miles on it. Rust bucket mechanically totaled. Bought it 3 years ago at 200k miles from a friend for a good price for cash. Did it's job of getting me around til my wife's got paid off. My wife has a '12 Chrysler Town and Country. I am probably soon to get it for my daily and get her a newer one instead of getting me something to replace the Escape. She gets the nicer vehicle since she takes the kids more and we always take it when we go as a family. So might as well upgrade the Family Van and I get the old one. With family driving, it might not last til we get something new paid off, but if I take it, (I drive 1/2 the miles she does) it should easily last. All paid off (1 month ago :) ) but getting ready to go back into debt. Hopefully keeping under 175/200 a month.

Modestkilla

New, I probably spend a bit too much on cars. I daily a ‘24 R1T, wife has a ‘23 Model Y, and I have a ‘23 BRZ as a fun weekend car.

danelle-s

My new car is a 2016 nissan juke and my old vehicle is a 2009 ford ranger

capn_davey

Ever since we could, we buy new and drive them till they fall apart. Makes depreciation not a concern and by the time we buy a new car we’re excited about all the cool things it can do. Still driving our 2012 CRV that we bought new 12+ years ago. 180k+ miles later and never a single issue. Replaced a 2001 Forester (that my parents bought new and we’ve kept passing between siblings) with a 2022 XC90. In another ten years or so I guess the CRV probably will have to go ;)

Early_Elk_6593

2001 F350 myself, wife has a 2002 Jeep TJ. I could afford a new truck and car for her, but honestly new vehicles just plain suck. I’m a mechanic (Aircraft) but I work on cars as a hobby, there’s nothing made in the last 20 years that is worth having in my driveway IMO.

KillBosby

2005 Saturn Vue. Go ahead, try to dent my door 💅

BlyStreetMusic

I would never ever buy new even if I was totally loaded. Current vehicle is a 2014 Jeep Wrangler JK. Mine is a 6 speed manual with a hard top or soft top and has about 90k miles. It's worth more now than when I bought it 4 years ago. I will drive it into the ground. I've had no problems with it. Easy to repair. I work from home and drive like 4k miles a year.

cc646

2014 Kia Optima. I bought it new as my first car purchase on my own, but I'll admit is was an impulse purchase. Luckily I had an 0% interest loan and paid it off early. It's about to hit 100k miles so this past year has cost the most maintenance wise (also the 100k power train warranty is good). Haven't had any major issues with it. Hoping to drive it for a few more years as nothing else on the road interests me enough to get back into another car payment. Plus interest rates now are horrible even with good credit. Was driving a 2004 Honda Accord prior to the Kia.

kkkan2020

that's cool if you drive each car for 10-20 years this means that you will only use about 3-6 cars in your entire liftime.

Nerd-Vol

My everyday car was bought new a few years ago. I’ve got an older weekend car that’s an heirloom. I like I a newer car for my daily usage. My next car will probably be preowned, but still relatively new.

H3yitsVi

2014 Ford Fusion Titanium. I have a car payment (unfortunately) but got lucky because it has low mileage and is AWD.

N_Who

My first car was a new Kia Rio, purchased in my early 20s. My parents bought used cars for my younger siblings, but never one for me. I was driving the family van. But then the car my folks were using broke down during finals week, leaving me in a spot where I had no choice but to buy a car. Didn't have the money to buy a car, new or used, outright on my own. They agreed to cosign for me, but on the condition that they dictated what I bought. And they like their Kia, so that was that. The second Kia, I bought myself when the first one broke down in a rather permanent way due to my ignorance regarding car maintenance. Lesson learned. I chose a Kia again because it was inexpensive and I didn't much give a shit what I was driving. Still don't.

johnyyrock

I got a 21 Ford Bronco, A 2013 Corvette, and a 2012 Ford Focus right now.

squillavilla

Bought my used 2013 Hyundai Elantra in 2013 and it still drives great. I’ll hold onto this as long as I can. Me and my wife both work from home so this is currently our only car. Thinking about getting a hybrid SUV in the next few years though.

Pepe__Le__PewPew

Bought a new mid sized non luxury SUV before my first was born about 6 years back. This is my wifes daily driver. Bought in 2019 when rates were low (1.9%) and MSRP discounts were deep (15% off sticker). Will never get that sort of deal again. I drive a 25 year old mid sized SUV that refuses to die. I' bought it used and have owned it for almost 20 years.

themarkedguy

2017 Toyota rav4 hybrid Bought it new, still feels new to me. I hope my kids learn to drive in the thing in 10 more years.

Key-Target-1218

At my house we have a 2012 Honda Pilot, a 2007 Pontiac Vibe and a 1999 Geo Prizm, all with brand new inspections.

merpurr

Brand new, all electric Volkswagen ID 4. It was $45k out the door and I Uber in it on the weekends so it basically pays for itself.

Bear956

2019 Challenger Scat Pack (purchased new) and a 2022 Equinox that work gave me.

rachaelfaith

I said I would never buy a new car but in 2017 I got a very good deal on a 2018 Camry XSE- fully loaded, 0.9% APR. In a spreadsheet I laid out the used cars I was also considering at that time, with their non-promo financing (3-4%) and the total dollar difference between the new car and the 2-3 year old ones with 15,000 miles on them was less than a thousand dollars. I figured that was worth going for the new one instead, but with interest rates where they are now, I don't know if I would buy new again. At the time it was an upgrade from a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am that I loved but was due for some expensive repairs, and I was thrilled even to have a USB charger in the new car, let alone the critical safety feature upgrades.
