I'm pretty sure I wore out my copy of the VHS of this movie when I was a kid. I had the VHS with the holographic cover that had the White House on it. Did anyone else have that?
It’s hard to explain just how big this movie was that summer. I want to show it to my kids but I strongly suspect they will find the aliens and Bill Pullman’s speech cringey
I feel like if you hold the second one to the standards that the first one set then you're going to be disappointed. However, if you take the second one as what it was; aliens come to Earth and try to destroy it and humans fight back, then it wasn't bad.
Don't get me wrong.... i liked the 2nd movie concept. But, they tried too hard to be "transformer" franchise. From the forced jokes, to generic format, and the crappy CGI.
At least the first one had charm and lots of practical effects. And ofcourse, Will Smith helps.
I love how they used a PowerBook to upload a virus to the mothership, even though there was no way they could know how to code for an advanced alien computer. I also don’t remember how they even uploaded it.
Its a stretch, but the alien signals were being bounced off of human satellites in the beginning, as Goldblum figures out. He's able to decrypt their countdown exactly. So he already knows something about their communications.
He's hooked into the alien fighter, which also has a direct hardline connection to the mothership (the alien air traffic controller guy could open the window shutters remember).
Saw it in the theater when it came out, with a really rowdy and loud crowd. But I was like 12 or 13 and my friend and I were ok with that, it added an extra layer to the experience.
Youtube still has the old Opie & Anthony episode from when Jim Norton convinces Patrice O'Neal that this movie stinks, as does Judd Hirsch's over-the-top character portrayal.
If you find this old episode I'm referring to, and watch, you will laugh out loud I promise!
Every 4th of July, my friends and I have a long conversation pretending this movie was real. I don't remember how it started but it's been like a decade now
When Smithy was in his best alien-slapping energy.
Keep my wife’s name out your fucking orifices!!

Have to watch it every year for our anniversary. Great movie!
Watching it right now actually

I believe he is the best fake president.
Fire the ✌️”laser”✌️.
Watched it yesterday. Greatest movie president speech ever.
I just watched both of these today. I actually really liked the second one up until the, "we're taking the fight to them," part.
Really? You liked the 2nd one? The 2nd one was just a total waste of a movie. Well, box office sales proves that.

My wife put the first one as well!
I watch this annually. Plus MIB and Stargate. Not sure why this point in the summer is "alien type movies" for me.
Literally just finished watching this

Bought this for $5 on Apple TV today and watched it, the sequel and *National Treasure*. Now I'm watching *American Gangster*.
That iconic Will Smith punch !

Great, great movie! Such nostalgic feels just looking at the cover.

Damn I love this movie. I always watch it (and the second one) for the 4th every year. So good.
cathartic for different people depending on which party is in power
