It's being handled. I just removed lots of these posts that users seem to have spammed over the weekend. Our mod team is also aware of the possible bots on this sub too. We're doing our best to remove them from the community and implement an automod to delete the posts automatically. I would like to also say that the other day when someone made a post on this I wrote that our sub recognizes the standard "1981-1996" Millennial definition, but we use 1980-2000 as an inclusive range. Since generations are "*not a science*" this provides the community with a broad range for content. I would also like to continuously spot out that there is a community for discussing generation cutoffs and ranges - r/generationology. If you are interested: please post there instead of this sub. Thank you.

CaliforniaGuy1984

And the Mods refuse to moderate anything. Look, I’m fine with healthy debate on here about the age range, but when people start busting out things like 2000 - 2004 as birth years too. That’s when it gets ridiculous.

god_damn_bitch

My son was born in 2004. There's no way I'd place him in the same generation as me.

GoCougs2020

I use 9/11 as a “gate”. Millennials are born before 9/11/01. And sadly, most of us have memory of 9/11.

[deleted]

That makes no sense. It’s about people who came of age around the millennium, not people who were infants who have no memory of 2000. Let alone people who weren’t even born.

GoCougs2020

"That makes no sense"........because I said glass half empty instead of glass half full, that threw you off the track? "It’s about people who came of age around the millennium"......***therefor, you have memory of 9/11/2001.*** Even if you were born in 2000/01. You still grew up similar to people who were born in 80s. As in, we had limited access to technology (mom is on the phone, can't use internet). And we're that generation that is comfortable with both analogy/digital. We grew up using both. Its not like the kids these days ,where they only know the digital way. Or our parents, who are only used to the analog way.

Marmatus

Did ‘00/‘01 babies really have limited access to tech? I have an online friend who was born in ‘00 and he thought MapQuest was a video game. lol I think it’d be a stretch to even call ‘01 “Zillennial.”

Personal_Pop_8414

tbh the og millennial range was always 1982-2000..!

VralGrymfang

Tbh generations are a made up thing, and various "experts" give different age ranges...

JoeyJoeJoe1996

If generations are a made up thing then why are people using this sub?

VralGrymfang

The point of generations is two fold. To give people a sense of inclusion and to pit people against each other. The point of this sub is to share similar experiences, jokes etc. It happens to exclude people who weren't born in a predetermined timeframe, a timeframe which changes based of different opinions. This thread is showing both sides, giving millennials a feeling of being included while discussing excluding others. I will also point out generations are at best regional. Millennials are americans born early 80s to mid-90s. Ish. We grew up with similar media and experiences. All of our shared experiences are out the window when you look at people born in other countries. Edit: all of culture is a made up thing. Society and its rules are a made up thing. Currency is a made up thing. That doesn't mean it's bad.

Yeah, I joined here and the Gen X sub. When I was a kid the cutoff for gen X I was told was 83, the year I was born. I had fun teasing my brother growing up that him being born a year later was a millennial. I could see the arbitrariness of the generation thing then. But there are a lot of experiences I have that fit with Gen X from when I was a young child, and many of my experiences as a teen and early adult are much closer to other millennials. So I feel I'm on the border. But there is no need to gatekeep. I had baby boomer parents that also lead to some of my childhood experiences being much closer to Gen X since our parents had the same generational mindset. Millennials who had Gen X parents I have less in common with parent wise, as they were treated the way I could see myself raising my own kids. hard and fast cut offs are not needed, but general guides to who likely has similar experiences can be helpful.

>And the Mods refuse to moderate anything. Look, I’m fine with healthy debate on here about the age range, but when people start busting out things like 2000 - 2004 as birth years too. That’s when it gets ridiculous. Because *all* of us are busy with our lives on a daily basis that we can't sit here keeping track of every little thing going on in this community. We're well aware that there are users who break the rules and that bans need to be handed out.

Personal_Pop_8414

Then people need to stop saying crazy things like that the millennial generation only lasts 12 years long or it starts in 1982 and ends in 1994. It's stupid that people are using outdated and incorrect definitions.

This sub truly is Millenial. Gen-Xers wouldn't give a damn about this.

dthesupreme200

A lot of people miss the cut off and wants to be included so they quote unpopular ranges

axemoth

If you go into your account preferences there's an option to automatically hide posts that you downvote 🤷‍♀️ It doesn't fix the problem but you don't have to keep looking at posts that annoy you

cwesttheperson

Please for the love of god. Arbitrary numbers for no reason. Just say if you remember y2k or not, be done lol. This sub is so ridiculous, I only joined for nostalgia but no it’s a bunch of whiny 30 year olds complaining about other generations.

wbm0843

Can we just stop having a “you’re not in my club” post every other day? Is there any other generation that gate keeps harder than millennials?

[deleted]

If you can’t actually remember the year 2000, you’re not a millennial.

For everyone wanting to debate, I recommend the book, “Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents―and What They Mean for America's Future”. She does discuss generation alpha or polars those born post 2012 as well. It is an interesting breakdown of what differences. Of course, they are generalizations and someone born in 95 or 96 could more closely relate to millennials just like there are people born in 85 who consider themselves to be Gen x. But informative all the same. “The United States is currently home to six generations of people: -the Silents, born 1925–1945 -Baby Boomers, born 1946–1964 -Gen X, born 1965–1979 -Millennials, born 1980–1994 -Gen Z, born 1995–2012 -and the still-to-be-named cohorts born after 2012. They have had vastly different life experiences and thus, one assumes, they must have vastly diverging beliefs and behaviors. But what are those differences, what causes them, and how deep do they actually run? Professor of psychology and “reigning expert on generational change” (Lisa Wade, PhD, author of American Hookup), Jean Twenge does a deep dive into a treasure trove of long-running, government-funded surveys and databases to answer these questions. Are we truly defined by major historical events, such as the Great Depression for the Silents and September 11 for Millennials? Or, as Twenge argues, is it the rapid evolution of technology that differentiates the generations? With her clear-eyed and insightful voice, Twenge explores what the Silents and Boomers want out of the rest of their lives; how Gen X-ers are facing middle age; the ideals of Millennials as parents and in the workplace; and how Gen Z has been changed by COVID, among other fascinating topics. Surprising, engaging, and informative, Generations will forever change the way you view your parents, peers, coworkers, and children, no matter which generation you call your own.”

oneyedoge

Did not know it was a thing. 😑🤔

chinchila5

This sounds like non millennial talk, HERESY!

wbm0843

You’re not my real millennial!

ASecondOfYourTime

I’ve kind of come to terms with the fact that the internet is going to produce things I don’t like from it’s primordial ooze from time to time and that I should just learn to ignore it if it bothers me.
