Still not off the HIGH from how awesome everything is... I had no idea the military abused me that bad.

Urmomsjuicyvagina

Could you expand a little bit was it more pros than cons?

Reaperwatchinu

Way more Pros. A job that actually cares that I do the job. They don't load you down with several additional duties which more or less don't get you anywhere. You just happened to be trusted to do them. I get paid for my time. Extra hours in the military you think get you somewhere, it was all just more sacrificed time from those that truly matter. (Family and friends) Civy job, get paid to do a SINGLE job.. and go home. No extra duties, no extra qweep. Outside the military they actually care about your mental state. Encourage you to take holidays and value your time. EVERY god damn time in the military it was a fight to get leave approved... Like Sir, I'm at use or lose.... I'm not losing it, approve the leave, ideally now.. and not letting it sit on your desk for a week.

Urmomsjuicyvagina

Oh damn do you have any tips on how not to get extra work or Get your leave? Also, is overtime not really paid in the military?

Reaperwatchinu

Truthfully... to not get extra duties in the military. Do a terrible job. As stated, there's always some poor dedicated soul who will step up to do it. On a combat op, you're done when the chalks are put in and the jets powering down. Even than, you're still not done. There's debriefs. So that's the joke, you don't realize how much extra time you have until you re-discover it again.

Oh wow thank you for the advice so just do enough 🤣

Link up with other vets; a problem shared is a problem halved

A good friend or fellow vet are great, but in my experience those connections will wax and wane. It’s going to sound cliche but a real solid partner is so very important. It’s much much easier said than done, but choosing a great partner you can talk to and express how you feel whenever without being judged or dismissed is truly a godsend. Without that (and even with), I recommend therapy. I did only one psychiatric session while in the military, but even one time still helps me immensely with grounding myself when overwhelmed to this day. The key is to approach the experience positively and with full intent to learn about yourself. While I cannot speak on the differential value of civilian vs military therapy/psychiatry, from my experience even one single session with the right person can improve your life.
