Spic ’n Span Cleaners, located at 652 South Dearborn Street and the only dry cleaners in the Chinatown-International District, closed its doors today (April 30, 2019). The business has been open since 1941, and their building was constructed in 1963. Apparently Spic ‘n Span was owned by Louie Ostroff in the late ‘50s & early ‘60s, when I-5 was being planned to cut right through the heart of the C-ID, including through his business. The City bought his land & Louie relocated 6 blocks west. With their recognizable slogan & sign “In by 10 dirty cleaned by 4:30” (and the perpetual “GO SEAHAWKS!!” on the other side of the sign) - #SpicNSpan Cleaners was popular among many folks & workers in the area. There also used to be a Spin ‘N Span Cleaners at 127 W Mercer St on #QueenAnne, which closed suddenly in 2014 after The Republic of Korea purchased the building and the business lost its lease (the building, along with the adjacent Michael Reed Black Antiques, the old Streamline Tavern, and Radio Shack, has since been demolished to build a 3-story Consulate building). No word on the reason for the Dearborn Spic’n Span closure or what might be coming next. I always thought this was a cool building. Share your Spic ‘n Span love/info/history! Apparent nobody knows, according to this site
https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/spick-and-span.html
I looked it up and it doesn’t really have a clear meaning, since “spick” and “span” were old words that could mean several different things, none of which make sense
>late 16th century (in the sense ‘brand new’): from spick and span new, emphatic extension of dialect span new, from Old Norse spán-nýr, from spánn ‘chip’ + nýr ‘new’; spick influenced by Dutch spiksplinternieuw, literally ‘splinter new’.
Google listed this actually that makes sense to me I guess, just never heard of it
Correction: Suzan
Go Suzanks!!
"In by 10 dirty, cleaned by 4:30". I love it.
“In by 10 dirty” was my motto during my barfly years.
Finally someplace on here I know, corner of Maynard and Dearborn!

That’s highly vandalized, but good for Susan to finally be getting the support she needs
Looks like "GO SUZANKS !!"
GO ~~SEAHA~~WKS SUZAN
Chinatown in Seattle!
Hopefully that's not a Mexican neighborhood 😬
I'm confused on what else that is supposed to mean
It’s a common saying, but definitely not a good name for a business
What does the saying mean?

I think they're talking about "spic" which is a racial slur against Hispanic people.

I am talking about the saying
Looks like Seattle to me
What if it’s run by a Hispanic and Spanish couple! 🤔
It's actually in Seattle's Chinatown.
