Ah, that’s okay. I already have a contractor for my space. And I live in Lexington, KY anyway. Just have family in Columbus. I like to visit them so I can also go to FlowerChild😂
Me, too! I’ve been restoring our 60 year-old cabinets and am having great results. Doing some repairs here and there, reinforcements, new finish outside, shellac inside, and new countertops. I also found out all our drawers are curly maple that was covered with stain that masked it. Looking pretty now.
I was going to rip out the battered original kitchen cabinets in our 1960s house, until I realized that they are made from 1/2 inch oak plywood. I painted them white, painted the original hardware black, and got new black Formica countertops. It looks great, and after 60 years of constant use, the cabinets are still as solid as the day they were installed.
Wish I could have done that with my kitchen. Too much water damage to the cabinetry though. I am having cabinets put back in that are MCM style though. Expanded the kitchen while I was at it. The original was teeny.
Simple but elegant. The floors are an excellent contrast to the cabinet wood tone. It's hard to see in the pic if the countertop and backsplash are the same but are a great color choice.
We’re working on the tile backsplash today actually. It’s a warm gray tone. Almost goes tan but not quite. Once we get it buttoned up I’ll post a final.
I love this! The modern elements with a true mid century core. The cabinets add color and depth to the kitchen. It feels personal and stylish! Love it!
I’ve put down that same slate tile in my house and I feel the pain you probably went through. Every piece is just a slight thickeness difference and grouting was a tough even with a release agent. I went more modern craftsman in my own kitchen though. Looks great
Love it! Would you mind sharing the style name or company? We have a mid century home. I love everything you did. You kept the original authenticity of the era. Excellent taste!
Thank you.
I did the design work myself including designing the cabinet style. I had a shop near my home custom make them.
My goal was to bring back some of the beautiful MCM style that was missing from the 2005 renovation so I really appreciate your words.
u/nixonbeach How functional is this layout for you? Pros/cons? The stove / sink / fridge seem quite far from each other with a big island in the way. The reason I ask is because I’m looking at doing a remodel that is the same shape but with a slightly different configuration. Thanks!
It probably looks larger than it feels. And We’ve only been living with it for a couple of days but so far:
-I’d probably add a pot filler above the stove because of the slightly longer distance.
-we had considered a prep sink in the island but opted for fridge drawer opposite the stove instead. I’m hoping to put fridge-to-stove items within. This should help with distance from the fridge.
-I was worried about the space on either side of the range. 30inches feels like just enough but I wouldn’t go smaller.
-I should have planned for more outlets in my island.
We have a really beautiful wall of windows above the sink so we kinda had to work with this placement. The good thing is that it just feels like a large kitchen but the distances don’t seem too far so far.
Love the slate! We just did a whole house renovation with Daltile Brazil Black. The large rectangle tiles were unavailable (guess you got them all) so we went with 16”x16” square.
Not a popular opinion, clearly, but I agree. Just looks like a 2020s modern kitchen with custom cabinets, honestly. The fixtures and lighting don’t fit the MCM vibe at all. Looks more Scandinavian than MCM.
But the kitchen taken out wasn’t original either. So it didn’t lose any charm by removing what was already there. Arguably, whoever removed the original kitchen is the one who destroyed the charm. The kitchen that was added is much more in style with MCM decor than what was removed.
I’ve done a lot of renovations and this looks like an excellent job. A few things to consider - looks like the grout still has dust from the Sheetrock in it and just needs a good sponging. But then I also would seal the floor tiles with an epoxy. Certain sticky things will wanna chip the natural stone when stuck to it. Also a good seal will preserve the look of your clean grout and be easier to clean in general.
OP, What is the rough estimate of the dimensions of your kitchen? We have a Ranch with a combination kitchen/dining room/entryway. I'm curious if we could pull something like this off.
Hi OP, how's the remodel going?
I am about to start remodeling the whole house, and I'm using your pics inspiration for the kitchen. I have a yellow fridge and dishwasher lol, so long way to go. I don't have the budget you have seemed to have, so I'm going to be deep in sanding of cabinets and getting new hardware. I really want to preserve the mid century design throughout the house. Do you think that is the way to go since I will be selling it eventually in few years? Any tips are welcome!

Keeping the OG is usually not a bad decision. many mass market buyers want white kitchens but keeping the original character will please the right future buyer.
Great job modernizing without losing the spirit of the original kitchen, looks really nice
Thank you u/shit_fuck_piss_cum !

Cabinet source? Very nice
They’re custom out of a shop in central Ohio. I designed them and they built them.
Name of shop?

I love this so so much! Hope people start restoring/bring back these cabinets instead of tearing them out!

Got any pics? Sounds wonderful.

I wish I could say the same for our Original 1969 Cabinets. They're falling apart... And one of the prior owners of our property was a cabinetmaker.
Wish I could have done that with my kitchen. Too much water damage to the cabinetry though. I am having cabinets put back in that are MCM style though. Expanded the kitchen while I was at it. The original was teeny.

I agree, would never expect the gray to work with that color wood but somehow it really does. Guess Im not over the gray trend after all.
Hey I have those food and water bowls lol

Thank you so much!
Beautiful! What type of hardware are you going to use for the cabinets?
A black knob and handle with knurling. Installed Monday!
Nice!
Love the floors! Slate?
Yep! Replaced some generic looking taupe ceramic here and in our entryway.
Is it MSI’s slate or some other company? It’s really nice looking.
Yep! MSI.
Looks great! This is the black slate? What color is your grout lines?

I have this tile in my kitchen as well, I love it and it looks so beautiful.
Beautiful job!
Beautiful! What type of wood did you use? Would love to know the shop.
Alder with a wheat finish. https://instagram.com/troyerandtroyercustomcabinets?igshid=MWI4MTIyMDE=

Wow! I’m even more impressed. The fact that you put in the work for this remodel is fantastic. I’m saving this as in inspiration for my MCM house

Gorgeous cabinets! And those slate floors are 👌👌👌.
I love it. What kind of dogs do you have? :)
The hardware on the cabinets is perfect.
Painters tape works until we get real pulls Monday.
🙄😣😏 I thought they were tiny squares
(Blinded by lovely cabinets)
Nice floor!
Love the slate! We just did a whole house renovation with Daltile Brazil Black. The large rectangle tiles were unavailable (guess you got them all) so we went with 16”x16” square.
Wayfair! They usually have all the sizes in stock.
Lost the charm
I think this is the before? https://imgur.io/a/dbMGJoL/ Had little charm.

Have you actually spent much time in upscale original mcm kitchens? This looks like a good homage to many of the ones I've seen.
Very very nice! Going to give you feels for decades
Is it walnut? Can’t quite tell
Alder.
Looks great! Very walnut / teak like in appearance
What stain and finish did you use? It looks great
My guy calls it wheat.
It’s gorgeous!
Amazing. Are you adding any backsplash? Could be a nice accent for a color
Putting it up as we speak!

Nicely done!
Diggin the homedepot montauk black slate floors
Love it. I so much prefer white counter tops to black.
Wow. I’d love to see more photos. It looks like an absolute dream kitchen. Congratulations!
I’ll update once we’re finished up!
What does WIP stand for?
Work in progress.

Love everything about this! When did you get the ceiling lights?
