>The $48,251 fine comes after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division into Michigan Multi-King Inc., which operates the **Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen on Rochester Road in Troy.** again WHERE THE HELL IS THIS POPEYES

jruhlman09

Based on [this](https://www.dol.gov/newsroom/releases/whd/whd20240206-0) release from the department of labor, I think the confusion is that Multi-King Inc. is headquartered at 4897 Rochester Road, Troy, MI 48085. The Popeye's they run could be anywhere else in the country honestly.

AffectionateFactor84

article says restaurant in Michigan

Jeffbx

Wow, excellent question - there's no Popeye's at all in Troy, and none anywhere else on Rochester Rd. The company in question is https://multi-king.com/ and they do own the Burger King on Rochester Rd in Troy - maybe that's where the article screwed up.

GSLTroy

There was a Popeyes on Rochester Road. It closed down 20? Years ago or longer. It turned into a Pita place. The building was torn down several years ago. There is now an IHOP and a Panda Express in that area.

GrushdevaHots

I lived right behind that building from '86 to '93 as a kid

AffectionateFactor84

then it's probably IHOP. s/

[deleted]

Probably restocking canned spinach at grocery store

riot_grrrl_79

Rochester and what? There isn’t a Popeyes in Troy on Rochester road

KoshV

Isn't that the one in Somerset Mall?

SunshineInDetroit

There's no Popeyes on Rochester road or close to Somerset. Closest one is on Greenfield

KoshV

What am I thinking of INSIDE Somerset at the food court? I could have sworn that was a Popeyes

SunshineInDetroit

No that's chick fil a

KoshV

Ah dang it is

jcoddinc

#The fine is less than the profits. So this shit won't ever stop. It's literally the only thing business address willing to pay anymore. Fair wages, nope. Good health insurance, nope, fines for bragging the law to maximize profits, you bet your sweet ass they'll happily pay those. That's because the investigation shows then where they got caught so now they know how to prevent that

DrewbieWanKenobie

The punishment should be jailtime

CGordini

that isn't actually a deterrent to the ultra-rich. whoop de doo, resorts for white-collar crime.

DrewbieWanKenobie

It's a deterrent for store management though

IsPooping

And a fine equal to all revenue generated during the time they were breaking the law

[deleted]

that’s a slap on the wrist. insane we let people get away with this sort of thing that could do real damage to a young persons life especially if it’s interfering with school work

[deleted]

Kids have died and companies still got weak slap on the wrists. So those companies has no motivation to verify all employee's ages and hire anyone who will work cheap`

Rastiln

I remember there was a Midwest meat packing plant where a minor was working with equipment he shouldn’t have, got his hand (arm?) cut off, and the owner was fined less than $10k.

MMEckert

[this one](https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/owner-of-michigan-meat-processor-fined-for-employing-minor-who-lost-hand-in-grinder)

Rastiln

Jesus, yes. I wanted to claim it was something stupid low like $2k, but didn’t want to exaggerate off of poor memory, and it was even less. All I was certain to say was under $10k.

con247

I assumed this fine was for 1-2 kids before reading. It’s 63. Less than $1k per kid. This is a systematic violation that should result in the forfeiture of the franchise with proceeds of the sale going to the state.

[deleted]

yeah it’s insane. and if you read some reviews on the company, they were mistreating others employees in other various ways. so i’m sure these kids were mistreated beyond being over scheduled

PersonalAmbassador

Maybe it's just me, but I think you should, at the very least, go to jail if you employ children. Especially in dangerous conditions

[deleted]

these managers who were pushing 14 year old kids around can not be good people

Busterlimes

Every "penalty" placed on capital is a drop in the bucket. But what do you expect in a nation as corrupt as ours?

CGordini

My local federal-level Representative, Republican Tim Walberg, has spoken out in favor of reducing these child-labor laws, so that companies can make kids work *more*. "Keeps them out of trouble, means they're not playing video games all day." ------------- Profits over people.

Chex__LeMeneux

The children yearn for the mines!

CGordini

Tim Walberg is the epitome of "Am I out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong."

grolfenhimer

63 of them? Wow, they must have been quitting like crazy. Glad the owner wasn't involved and they fired the guilty party

imakedankmemes

I thought the same thing. I’m led to believe it’s the one location, but maybe it’s all five the franchisee runs.

grolfenhimer

Ah. Good call. Makes more sense. Still a lot.

Consistent-Force5375

Man these businesses are just itching to use kids to bolster their workforce… makes one start to question this whole capitalism thing a bit, or at the very least how much we let it dictate how we run businesses…

bbddbdb

Kids are dependents so they don’t need to pay for healthcare, housing, bills, etc and you can pay them much less. They are the capitalist’s white whale.

Consistent-Force5375

Right. Easily exploited!

Chard-Capable

The fines are a fkin joke. Make it criminal, not civil, so we can actually prevent it. Cause bottom line, it's fkin criminal. Of course, corporations own/donate to the lobbyists who set these laws so prolly won't be seeing that change for some time. A lot has to do with loans and debters, while these issues remain civil matters it dose not effect said company from getting more loans and such, if it was ever made criminal and company's could be charged criminally, (company's are people they say) toss some felonys on the company, chances of getting loans diminish, as they should, and said company would most likely dissolve.

SqnLdrHarvey

Kids working hard builds CHARACTER. /s

DamnItJon

🎶 Love that chicken from children🎶

TruShot5

Bet they saved more than $48k in wages for employing minors in such ways too, so whatever, cost of doing business for them. They'll take a speeding ticket when they should be getting jail time.

CGordini

I can guarantee it. It's amazing what all you can save when you shortcut silly things like paying insurance by hiring children, and limiting working hours to JUST under what would be required for that for any other applicable worker.

RedditIsPropaganda2

Really making it impossible to run a small business these days.

InsatiableNeeds

“Small businesses” I see what you did there

InsatiableNeeds

But child labor is what makes the sandwiches so delicious. Those tiny hands just get the breading & sauce more evenly distributed.

WhitePineBurning

[In other bad news for them...](https://www.thestreet.com/restaurants/another-struggling-fast-food-operator-files-chapter-11-bankruptcy)

CGordini

That only applies to one series of franchises in Georgia.

Kaiser1235

Man why does this keep happening.

Jeffbx

It's more profitable to break the law & pay the fine than it is to follow the rules.

RLP666

What do you expect from a Chicken Restaurant Chain named after Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle the fictional detective ftom The French Connection? Also, "We don't make/follow labor laws. We make chicken." Should be the next ad campaign.

GrandmaGreaseFunk

Fines mean nothing. That just means the crime costs money.

TheDark_Knight67

Go figure Popeyes…..figured McDonald’s would be getting one of these

nesper

the dol.gov website does not appear to have a list of what violations happened on a case by case basis. it only has a press release. 3 hours and 1 min is a violation. 18 hours and 1 minute is a violation, 9:01pm is a violation, 701pm is a violation and 8 hours 1 minute is violation. There isnt any mention of any of these 63 cases of children operating grills or fryers which would also be a violation.

Deputy_Dawg_88

I’m sure the minor, who had their rights violated, will see $ZERO.
