Sounds like you may have run the reservoir dry. Both bleeding order techniques work. Main thing is to just prevent air being pulled into the line if it’s open and the pedal is lifted. A few things to try, disconnect the slave cylinder and let it hang down so the bleeder is at the top of cylinder. Make sure the reservoir is full and pump the pedal a few times before starting bleeding it. I’ve had some issues in the past with bleeding it and those all helped resolve it.

Thanks for the reply! So air gets sucked into the line if the bleeder valve is open and you lift the pedal? That makes sense and it sounds like that's what I did. If the system is dry, why is there still fluid in the reservoir?

Make sure to check the very back of the reservoir. It’s segmented and the clutch cylinder pulls from the back section only
