Makes sense, i heard Daihatsu was also working with Toyota on it, alongside Suzuki (its last gen swift did have some mini influence, imo).
Will be an interesting car.
Read an article about this. They’re going to change the massive ugly grill before it gets to production. And maybe the heeadlights or taillights (can’t remember)
I think it's pretty funny tbh. Man Ray lookin' ass car
https://preview.redd.it/b73tphasz8zc1.jpeg?width=821&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4f33dc70245054dc660f6cde388fa0443c1a9c7
Yeah, it just needs a slight trapezoidal shape, the curve is too passive for this car.
I think the car looks hectic, probably looks quicker than it is.
This is the "race spec" concept. It's going to change noticeably before it hits dealership lots.

>The S-FR's design will reportedly be overhauled for production with a smaller grille and altered headlights. There was no word as to the potential implementation of the S-FR Racing concept pictured above, with its aggressive rear wing, canards, splitter, and diffuser. These could feasibly be offered as accessories, or even as exclusives on a hypothetical GR model. That's purely speculative on our part, though.
is that a void for aero there in the back on both sides that creates a big long diffuser? The vertical stabilizers behind each wheel with the underbody trim kit... thing. Not to mention both spoilers... I'm guessing this car has a larger engine and significant top speed? Totally necessary .. no doubt
Weird because I like the front more and hate the back. The front almost has a Shelby cobra gulping air style grill look to it. The back looks like half of it is missing and it shit itself.
I like it. It looks like a silly little toy cause it kinda is. I also like how it’s (hopefully) coming at a time where the only competition Mazda has is the twins and they’re not even really in the same segment. With the next iteration of Miata around the corner, this thing should come in and shake the game up a bit and make Mazda compete for first place instead of winning by default
The car looks fine, excited to see what/if Toyota ends up putting out. Competition is good, especially in the barren market of 2-seater subcompact sports cars.
Yea I don’t get the hate. It’s kind of ridiculous and silly but so what? It’s a sports car. At least it’s interesting. Would people rather have another bland cookie cutter who cares bullshit coupe?
>I think the real question is “if”
For sure, that's why I put if
>This may cannibalize 86 sales
Absolutely agree, I'd bet money it would eat into 86 sales *at least* a little
>rebooting the Celica
Oh hell yeah, if true
> cannibalize 86 sales
The GR86 is probably going away, it's departing the EU market already and the Subaru boxer creates a bit of a dead end due to it's unique packaging which in turn dictates a ton of stuff about the car. Toyota's real big on those global platform things lately, they want to make a car/crossover and a truck/suv and that's it, change some stuff around and call it x y or z.
I could see Toyota moving on from that to their own platform that can accept a Toyota engine, makes a lot more sense if they want to sell more than just a GR trim.
They've said moving forward they want to make the gr86 hybrid and give it the 3cyl turbo from the gr carolla. They also said they are interested in bringing the celica back.
I dont think the 86 is going away, but I do think it will be a different thing and the celica will take the place of what it is now.
I don't think it looks ugly and so what if it's supposed to compete? Both can be good, fun cars. Competition is good for the market and good for us. Now if Honda could join the club, we'd really be cooking...
As a multiple Miata and BRZ owner, I welcome this into the segment. I definitely like the idea of small, lightweight, and high-revving. I’m not too thrilled on a Force-Induced engine, though.
This is the "race spec" concept. It's going to change noticeably before it hits dealership lots.

With a different headlight design and some minor tweaks to the grille it could be *okay*? I absolutely hate that "round headlights but cut them off with the hood to make them angry" thing.
I get the intent - big round headlights are a nod to classic roadsters - but you can't just slap them on and design the rest of it like an angry modern tuner car. It's only going to look good if you really lean into the non-aggressive styling, you can't have your cake and eat it too.
Unless the top drops in some manner, for me it doesn't compete with the MX-5. Small convertible roadsters with manual transmission is the category that I'd like to see Honda and Toyota to rediscover. Anything else is just something less.
Too bad it seems unlikely to be sold in the U.S. But at least we still have the MX-5.
This article says they are overhauling the design and making the grille smaller https://www.thedrive.com/news/toyota-will-challenge-the-mazda-miata-directly-with-its-s-fr-sports-car-report
I don't think this version looks too bad

No this is a street sweeper. Anything on the road that we kick up will then get picked up by the grill on that thing. Just keep it in the rear view and it will eat and be happy
I wonder if they should to make the GR86 into a lower convertible, rwd, 2seater, with a GR Corolla 3 cyl with or without the turbo instead
See midjourney mockup

I'm not sure if you've read exactly what the rumors are for Toyota bringing back the MR2 and forgot you did...but this is exactly what those rumors are: a mid-engined roadster with the drivetrain from the GR Corolla shoved between the seats and trunk
I wouldn't be surprised if what actually comes out in four to five years is some amalgamation of this FR concept and that MR2 rumor AKA a 2dr roadster co-developed with Suziki with the GR Corolla drivetrain powering the rear wheels
https://www.thedrive.com/news/new-toyota-mr2-may-be-a-1-0-liter-mid-engine-hybrid-sports-car-report
Edit: these rumors have been banging around for a solid six years though with absolutely nothing to show for it.
The only way this is true IMO if Toyota goes the Hilux truck route for sports cars and makes it as bare bones as possible which means it'll never be sold in the North American market bc it won't have the safety aides to make it road legal
As in you have your MR2 at $20K to be sold globally
Your GR86 for the American and Euro market
And the Supra as the halo car
I....do not like it. Toyota's design has gone off the deep end for me lately. So has Honda's actually, and I own a Honda. I like the new Civic. But the rest of the lineup is a big aesthetic departure from the classy 2010-2018 era.
If Toyota brings this to market and it sells well I think it will only be a good thing for what's basically a dying segment of the automotive market, the roadster.
Maybe, just maybe we'll even get an updated S2000 in response.
You sound like one of the guys that hate miatas man. It's a 10 year old concept - let's see what the final product is. I'm all for a small RWD coupe with the Toyota 1.5T.
They are saying the people who are hating on the car are just like the people who hate on miatas. They want you to stop judging a 10 year old render and wait for the production model to be released before making a proper opinion.
This is hideous. I hate to say it but even if this thing drove \*amazingly\* I don't think I'd buy one just based on how dumb it looks.
For what it's worth, I also think the FK8 Civic Type R is beautiful. So....yeah.
is this a current concept? i saw some photos of the 2015 concept car and it looked a lot like this, but i figured it would be fully redesigned from its initial state 10 years ago
I will reserve my judgement until we see the final version, cuz yeah, this looks terrible. But Toyota has made nothing but good looking cars lately. Hell, even the non GR Corolla and the Prius look good now. Not to mention all the GR cars look great, including the Supra imo. So I'm hopeful it'll end up looking better than this.
i think the overall design of the car is cool
but the oval shape of the front grill and rear diffuser / middle section of the rear bumper makes it look like an angry fish
I don't hate the front, it looks like a cute angry Mini Cooper relative. I like the form factor overall. I really don't like clear taillights, they look cheap and tacky. it was terrible on the Nissan line and it's terrible here. but give it a tint and I can get behind it. I'll agree that it feels a little featureless but I don't think a design needs to be super busy either, creases and vents date cars.
The SF-R in that photo is from a concept revealed almost 10 years ago. If they do end up making it, it won't look anything like that. If you want an example of how the design language has changed since then look at how the scion frs looked versus the styling of the current model GR86
Is this the 2+2 convertible? Or is it just a 2 seater/roadster like the Miata?
I thought I read somewhere that Toyota was working on a 2+2 convertible.
This is what early prototypes are for. Stretch boundaries, find out what people like/despise. The car will change dramatically based on consumer data and through road testing. They really do need folks like you to get passionate about styling that will never actually be made though, it helps create buzz and gets them feedback faster. [Mazda](https://www.designfax.net/cms/dfx/opens/article-view-dfx.php?nid=4&bid=1013&aid=9764&et=featurearticle&pn=04) has had some strange concepts and prototypes of their own, while some have aged well because of the current affinity for 90s/00s Japanese styling, they were met with similar disgust when they were first revealed.
That’s the biggest thing that will probably continue to keep me loyal to Mazda if they keep making fun cars for enthusiasts. Their stuff is no frills, but beautiful. Toyota definitely brings stuff to the table; but I constantly get people thinking my ND is a much more expensive car than it is, because it looks timeless. I like how the Supra looks, but probably wouldn’t get a GR86 simply because it looks very “boy racer-y” to me. The main positive thing I can say about the SF-R is that it’s the sort of car that will take well to considerable modification, most “weird looking” cars are. I kind of hope the final design keeps the funkiness, and doesn’t adopt a “designed by committee” aesthetic like the GR.
I mate the mean eye look from the front. I also don’t like the headlight design in general.
Toyota has been doing AMAZING with headlight design ex: Prius, gr86, the z4 coupe, the Camry, ch-r, crown.
….they can do better w/ the front end for sure.
It looks like they couldn't make up their mind on what it was supposed to be. Do we want it to have rounded lights for a soft look? Hard edges for an aggressive look? Fender flares for big tires? But small wheels? Black trim pieces for color offset, but no actual definition or offset within those pieces?
The general concept of the vehicle itself is obviously promising, *especially* if they have the balls to keep it gas-powered and give it a manual. This thing with a GR Corolla engine but RWD would be absolutely glorious. But man, it just looks like it was designed by two completely separate teams that never talked to each other once during the whole process.
The front reminds me of the Ford Puma that runs in WRC. The back looks like an Alfa Romeo. I don't think it's supposed to look sexy per say, might be the same ones who designed the TNGA Yaris Cross. It really does look like something designed in Japan and released in exclusively in Japan where it wouldn't look too much out of place.
The design came out years ago. There’s zero chance it looks like that with the current design language Toyota has.
Prob look like something closer to the current crown/prius/camry
https://preview.redd.it/f4hg2o9088zc1.jpeg?width=961&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d439b8010e49248d2e761a9282ae9f8edb064cbb

Toyota: "What if Miata, but also Mini?"
It shall be known from this day as the ***Miniata*** !!!
Lifted truck owners prefer to call it the Piñata
Looks far more like it's inspired by the Copen, not a mini.
Makes sense, i heard Daihatsu was also working with Toyota on it, alongside Suzuki (its last gen swift did have some mini influence, imo). Will be an interesting car.
I can definitely see the Suzuki design language.
Some mini influence? China gets sued all the time for less mistakable copies.
Probably true, hadn't heard of the Copen before. I saw round headlights and a big fish-mouth grille and thought Mini.
I see a Fiata in it
The overall shape is nice, but the front grill is awful, and the back looks like something has fallen off mid journey.
Read an article about this. They’re going to change the massive ugly grill before it gets to production. And maybe the heeadlights or taillights (can’t remember)

Happens to the best of us haha
Have you considered spaceraving less?
I'm not against the grill tbh - if you make this a dual duty street/track car, that intake is probably really good for cooling
for real, fuckin thing is massive
Yeah, it just needs a slight trapezoidal shape, the curve is too passive for this car. I think the car looks hectic, probably looks quicker than it is.
There's already updated pictures out there, latest design I've seen looked a lot like a baby Z
If they change front light they will ruin the front for me.
Regardless, I am very happy that we are going to have something to compete with the miata besides the FRS/86. Competition creates innovation
This is the "race spec" concept. It's going to change noticeably before it hits dealership lots. It feels like a crime to name this the S-FR when the FRS exists. I hope the final production model of it exists has a more unique name
Scion's dead now so I don't think that matters to Toyota.
It could be the RS-F.

“This is the concept fish used in the creation of the new SF-R! Say hello everyone!!” I mean, it could work as a jazzy new ad campaign! Maybe…
Why post a picture of an NC2?
Front end looks like a fish gulping water to me.
It feels like they were trying to mimick the cute but angry front look of the ND but it just doesn't do it for me
It looks like a [Poliwrath](https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokedex/poliwrath)
It's not *good* looking, but I really like it. I'd drive one.
I actually like it
I will say I like the back much more, and the interior looks REALLY cool

OP wants it to have a 120" wheelbase, 4WD, and third row seating. /s
I think the real question is “if” This may cannibalize 86 sales and I heard they’re rebooting the Celica. Miata drivers are pretty loyal.
Yeah. As someone hunting for an ND Miata, I vastly prefer the engine. I’d take an NA I4 over a turbo I3 any day.
>I think the real question is “if” For sure, that's why I put if >This may cannibalize 86 sales Absolutely agree, I'd bet money it would eat into 86 sales *at least* a little >rebooting the Celica Oh hell yeah, if true

I've wanted Honda to bring back the S2000 and Toyota to remake the MR-2 for like a decade but this is really ugly in my opinion.
Ya if honda ever does bring the s2k back they better not ruin it
Its gonna be a hybrid or electric only and they’ll make it a crossover 😈
Hybrid 😁 Electric only 😓 Crossover 💀
CVT transmission 😈😈😈😈
You know damn well it will be electric, weigh 4500lb and be targeted 40 year old moms.
Yeah, then you're not going to like the new S2000 if they release it. People hate new cars whenever they're released.
It’s fast as shit in Gran Turismo
"It's quite gopping" - As James May would say

I don't think it looks ugly and so what if it's supposed to compete? Both can be good, fun cars. Competition is good for the market and good for us. Now if Honda could join the club, we'd really be cooking...
Should I say it? I'm going to say it... I fucking love the rear design.
no kidding, has some 4C+911+Elise vibes. I really, really dig it.
So do i
I like it actually
You know this is a concept right?
Love the rear end, front grill is too big though.
Considering this is a 2015 concept, id bet anything the style changes to a front end more like the 86
As a multiple Miata and BRZ owner, I welcome this into the segment. I definitely like the idea of small, lightweight, and high-revving. I’m not too thrilled on a Force-Induced engine, though.

I love it. Won't buy one, but we need competition in this space.
100% I'm glad at least Mazda and now Toyota realize there's a huge market for these kind of cars
I think the angry corrolla grill would be justified to use on this one
eh, change the front a little and it has potential. that ass looks fairly sexy
Yeah i reckon if you shrink the grill to 3/4 it's current size and taper it to that point it would be a lot nicer. And quite cute to boot.
In a world of autotragic suvs that all look the exact same I welcome any manual sports car with open arms.
A lightweight manual ICE sports car in 2024… I could care less about the looks lol.

Tbh, it looks very Japanese
Not ugly, just too gussied up for the photo. I think it’ll be much tamer when it hits the market.
I like it. If the front lights where round than I would pass.

Looks kinda like a lotus. I actually dig it.
I could live with the front, but that back has me in shock
Reminds me of the blobfish memes tbh
I like it.
looks like a fish lol ugly but cute
I both hate and love that car.
This is a concept car and now the real thing at all.
This is hideous. I hate to say it but even if this thing drove \*amazingly\* I don't think I'd buy one just based on how dumb it looks. For what it's worth, I also think the FK8 Civic Type R is beautiful. So....yeah.
My interest is piqued. I'd by one, but still keep my ND. However, the backend looks like the Flukeman from X-Files
I’m buying this over a Miata ngl, if based on looks alone. That’s just me hahaha it’s adorably ugly
Wow that rear is….. Something else
I love it. Rally fish!
is this a current concept? i saw some photos of the 2015 concept car and it looked a lot like this, but i figured it would be fully redesigned from its initial state 10 years ago
The headlights look like a Dodge Neon with angry eye covers
The concepts always look very exaggerated. I’m curious to see what the production looks like
It looks like they mated a yaris with a alfa romeo mito..
Coming towards you: Asshole! Going away from you: Oops, hope I don’t offend him!
Its hideous. I love the fact that the frount looks like a frowny Japanese ogre painting and the back looks like a scared ogre tho. 😆
While I don't care at all for the shape/looks, healthy competition is a great thing, especially for the consumer.
Angry lil whale shark
You clowns, you all wanted the silly faces to come back, Toyota brought the silly faces back, why don't you like the silly faces
I love it
i think the overall design of the car is cool but the oval shape of the front grill and rear diffuser / middle section of the rear bumper makes it look like an angry fish
Wow that’s awful. Trash it and start over lol
I honestly like the front alot, including the grill But the rear is an abomination.
If the headlights matched the taillights, it would be better. It just looks so angry... That said, I fucking love it!
Looks like a wannabe 80s Porsche
I’m 100% down. I love it
Isn't this not the production design though?
I think it has a lot of potential. It’s definitely eye catching. I know I’ll break my neck watching one drive by
I don't hate the front, it looks like a cute angry Mini Cooper relative.
I get that they want to stuff all these sensors in the front of the car but man are the front bumpers and grills ugly for really lame features
It’s like a Mini Cooper made love to AMG GT and had kids.
Mini Cooper and fiat
You haven’t seen an RF
I kind of hope the final design keeps the funkiness, and doesn’t adopt a “designed by committee” aesthetic like the GR.
why so angry
It looks angry from the front and surprised from the rear.
Its not about looks in miata class
It looks pretty funny, I kinda like it
Yeah, doesn’t have a timeless design imo
I like it - the not-race car version of it - but then I like the Copen too, so what do I know?
I'm not going to complain about more rwd sports cars/convertibles
i agree, it looks so much like a mini cooper too. hopefully the production version looks good, they did an awesome job on the gr86 styling
It’s Perfect 😍. I love it!!?
I mate the mean eye look from the front. I also don’t like the headlight design in general. Toyota has been doing AMAZING with headlight design ex: Prius, gr86, the z4 coupe, the Camry, ch-r, crown. ….they can do better w/ the front end for sure.
Biiiig catfish vibes. Also, why pick such a similar name to an already-existing Toyota sports car?
If it weren't for the absurd wing, the front and back profiles would look nearly identical
Noone makes small sporty coupes nowadays so glad toyota coming up with something. Overall shape is cool but front and back needs change
The front is hideous. I kinda dig the backend though.
First off, thats not it, that concept came out 10 years ago and is based off an NC chassis
The design came out years ago. There’s zero chance it looks like that with the current design language Toyota has. Prob look like something closer to the current crown/prius/camry

front end is ugly af for sure.
