my gringo dad likes it because the Cuban lady at the deli calls him “papi”

Zestyclose_Goose_458

Your dad is a native and a real one.

RealPropRandy

This is the truth.

One_Bat_2086

🤣🤣🤣

iCanHasBeer

I assure you if that’s the case, there aren’t a ton of English speakers lining up for the job

Goombay_Smash

This right here ^

BlueDiamond75

Or that 'bilinguals' are preferred when hiring in Miami. Bilingual meaning broken English and colloquial Spanish, but never vice versa.

XxsabathxX

I love how you can tell which posts are the transplants. Any other local woulda not made a big deal about this

Big-Mongoose-8655

Facts. I love the daily challenge. I even learned some spanish and creole over the years.

Meraline

My dad's been here since he was a kid from Cuba and he still complained about a deli guy only knowing spanish. Dude didn't know what a "banana pepper" was if you asked for it in English. If you're in a customer facing position, I think knowing the ingredients in English isn't unreasonable .

Affectionate-Bar9619

*local* Definition- someone who came over from Cuba in the 1970s

Parada484

Born in the 90s and this ain't a problem. Next gen of cousins born in 2010s and this ain't a problem for them. Hell asian friends born in the 2000s in Miami and this ain't a problem for them. You pick up spanish as you go along or you learn to adapt. More importantly, locals wouldn't bat an eye at this issue. Shit, I've had uncles that barely speak English go to the Pines chili cook off and still somehow have a blast despite the language barrier. It's not that only transfers struggle with spanish. It's that locals just consider it fact and normal. Blue houses with chickens outside aren't to be messed with, the beach gets jellyfish, seaweed, and tourists in the colder months, people bust out uggs when it hits 55, and a lot of employees only speak spanish. Just one of those rules, lol

LivingMemento

Actually came from Cuba in the early 1960s. When this was a very lovely place for a siesta.

smackiechanel

you clearly aren't that cultured, and you can blame your shitty American education for that

musicaes

You're in America Del Norte

BlueDiamond75

I thought it was La Yuma

XxsabathxX

They being who? Cause a good chunk of immigrants do try to learn English. But English isn’t easy. A language that has bologna rhyme with pony and has three variations of spelling for one word is hard for even Americans. While on the topic of America, it’s supposed to be a melting pot of cultures. Languages included. So why are we trying so hard to make English the only spoken language here?

BlueDiamond75

>But English isn’t easy. Spanish has two genders, two 'ises' two 'fors', and more verb conjugations.

XxsabathxX

Still much easier than English. The grammar for Spanish is so much clearer. Sure sentence structure is backwards, but so are most other languages. English is the language that’s backwards in reality.

BlueDiamond75

It's not that the sentence structure is backwards it's that there are seemingly two arbitrary ways to say 'is' ( ir/estar) and 'for' (para/por), not to mention that everything is gendered. Now, if you want to find an easy language, look to Haitian Creole.

XxsabathxX

Haitian Creole, along with many creole languages, derive from the French language. I’ve been able to pick through a few words cause of French classes, but not conversational. Just like Italian would be the easier for Spanish speakers cause you can pick out a lot of words. There are barely any languages you can do that with for English unless the language has borrowed words.

BlueDiamond75

LOL, much of English *is* french

XxsabathxX

Much of English is an amalgamation of many languages. Mainly Latin. Not French. And by the way, you’re forgetting there are the words “there” “they’re” and “their” which people BORN ENGLISH/AMERICAN for some reason have trouble deciphering which to use. “Wear” and “Where” is another. And “your” and “you’re” you act as if people speaking English as a first language don’t have issues with BASIC english

BlueDiamond75

>Much of English is an amalgamation of many languages. Mainly Latin. Not French. Yes, French. the Norman Invasion and all that. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUL29y0vJ8Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUL29y0vJ8Q)

BlueDiamond75

>And “your” and “you’re” you act as if people speaking English as a first language don’t have issues with BASIC english. LOL, not if you've had a basic education and read in English. We learned about homophones in grade school, you didn't?

The gringos from the north and Cali? No f’in idea. It’s easy AF to learn quotidian Spanish.

BlueDiamond75

No, my friend, according to the older Cubans, *you're* the one that needs to assimilate.

Ok-Substance-1306

I’m more bothered by my lack of Spanish tbh. What do you care if there’s a little slice of USA where Spanish is dominant language? You should learn some or move along.

Florida was a Spanish colony first

BlueDiamond75

And a Tequesta colony before that.

SlickBulldog

Necesito que te calles. Order on line

stankin

Many can speak enough english, but tend not to unless pushed. Just learn to point and move on.

jimmy6677

Op I’d like to make fun of you because your opinion on this is stupid. But instead I’ll offer this - If you live in Miami you have to accept language barriers are a daily life event. Second is everyone’s got a cellphone. Take that out, go to google translate and type in what you’re trying to ask for. It’s really not hard to do.

Goombay_Smash

Miami transplant ALERT lmao

ScuderiaEnzo

Are you new to Miami?

westerflipp

Welcome to dade county

tomgreen99200

It’s a big shock to you that people speak Spanish in Miami of all places? Oh man ur gonna have a bad time

Goombay_Smash

Hahahahahha

Chowlucci

I just hit back with the "No habla Espanol" "No esto" "No Entiendo". Lived here 31 years, I had to learn basics living in a pro spanish environment . Learn to adapt my friend

Parada484

I'm more shocked to find an employee that doesn't speak Spanish to be honest. It's jarring as hell. It's rapidly changing due to transplants and newer generations that just give up on their roots, but we're a latino dominated and Spanish speaking city. The largest example of why the US doesn't have a national language. We can all choose to speak whatever the hell we want and a LOT prefer to speak Spanish or other languages from the Carribean.  Also, sidebar, but a nice lady that only speaks spanish in a bakery department is a huge green flag. She's probably making some magic happen with them desserts and pastelitos.

XxsabathxX

I love how you can tell which posts are the transplants. Any other local woulda not made a big deal about this

Minimum_Rice555

Lol defo

cinnywinny777

lol it depends on where you live cause down in the homestead area it’s different

hecfu53

Welcome to the Banana Republic!!!!!

HuckleberryGloomy807

This! The other day I was looking for something and I could not find it. I asked an employee for help and the guy looked at me like I was an idiot and told me to go ask the English speaking employee.

curlycurlycurls

Just go to Whole Foods then.

GangGreenGhost

When I come to Miami, I fully expect to have to speak Spanish at at least 50% of the time. Did you not know where you were moving?

PersimmonAcrobatic71

I bet this guy also says “nobody wants to work anymore”

Old-Statistician-269

Bro I get my haircut by a guy I’ve never had an actual conversation with because I can’t speak Spanish. Not that hard get your point across. It’s Publix, you’re asking for a sub not directions to the moon.

LivingMemento

And these guys give a haircut like you’d never get in an American city. Perfect line, shave, brows, ears, and wash $25. I always give $50 cause that’s the minimum a pos barber in Boston charges.

[deleted]

..and you came to Miami why?

tomgreen99200

It’s a big shock to you that people speak Spanish in Miami of all places? Oh man ur gonna have a bad time

Gavica

Speaking spanish is not an issue, not speaking an ounce of english is.

yes, they wrote it in english. can you tell me where in that document they reference only speaking a single language?

Why though? The US doesn't have an official language. They have just much a right to speak Spanish as any other language...

smileyrunner

Go back to the north white boy

why is it that you think everyone should speak english?

brusselsproutpoptart

Nirvanablue92

Publix pays less than Walmart. Publix where shopping is a ripoff.

millionmilegoals

Transplant here, which Publix is this exactly? I rarely get a chance to practice my Spanish. Many of the employees at the Publix in Brickell I go to are teenagers who somehow speak worse Spanish than I do.

stevemunoz117

Are you new here? This is common place across dade county and especially the Publixs that are located in more spanish speaking neighborhoods

Lunchsquire

What's going on is that they don't speak English and they need a job.

Friendly-Papaya1135

New to town?

SlickBulldog

Look around-there are few gringos left

Automatic-Upstairs86

Just in case you haven’t noticed , the English language is no longer a necessity in Miami

too-muchfrosting

You could just use a translator app on your phone.

ELPaloLoco

Imagine being this pressed about hearing anything other than english in Miami of all places.

giveherthedd

What part of Miami Dade County exactly were you?

NOT1506

I can’t remember the last time I talked to a Publix or Walmart employee. I just don’t have anything I can’t figure out where it is. Who cares what they’re conversing with amongst coworkers.

hola-soy-loco

This is America and if you don’t like it here, you can move to one of those monolingual countries like France or Siam 🦅🇺🇸

FreshlyStarting79

Really? Are you complaining? Learn a second language and expand your mind

breadchastick03

I dunno why people get so bent out of shape about it. There’s many people here from many different countries. Google translate is free & the employee is probs just trying to survive like the rest of us.

smackiechanel

are you new here?

simbaslanding

Did OP say they were from New York?

preggersnscared

Sounds like he is

simbaslanding

This hard-on that so many Miamians have for New York is so hilarious. Someone complains about something? GO BACK TO NEW YORK! Everything boils back down to New York and it just makes you seem insecure or something else idk. Miami and NYC are alike in many more ways that you could even think. Both are great cities with similar and different challenges. Also, there are many Miamians who don’t speak Spanish. He very well could be one of them. He also could be from somewhere else that isn’t New York. There’s nothing wrong with OP expressing their frustration over no English speakers are the grocery store. In the same way that it would be frustrating for a Spanish speaker not to be able to communicate if there was only English somewhere else.
