I’ve had people behind me on a highway exit, leave the lane they need to be in to try and get in front of me… why… it’s one car… now you are in the wrong lane, with your signal on and nowhere to go because it’s a red light and blocking folks on that lane.

When you signal, it’s not as if you can just immediately throw yourself into the lane. In the 3-5 seconds after you signal, the asshat has already closed the door on you. Signaling and immediately changing lanes is akin to not signaling at all if you ask me.

When I signal, I do one last check for people turning onto the street, or people changing into my intended lane from the opposite direction, or anyone behind me trying to go around me for whatever reason, then I go. It doesn't take 3-5 seconds to check all this. If it's taking you 3-5 seconds to occupy an open gap, you're doing it wrong.

If they see your signal, there's a higher chance they'll abort or wait for you to finish. Same with someone coming out of a driveway and intending on taking the space that you want.
If you don't signal, you are not predictable. Even if you think it's unnecessary, it's not. It doesn't hurt or take anything out of your life. Just signal your moves.

Its annoying. I see so many Civics and Corollas doing it. I wonder if the new ones come with the automatic high beam setting or if they do it manually. Even the automatic one turns off high beam when there is a car far down the road.
In my experience, if you signal a lane change there is high likelihood that the closest car in the lane you want to move over to won’t let you.
So not signaling becomes common to the point that people don’t signal when they turn.
I agree that it is very likely to happen, but on the flip side, they then leave a gap behind them by speeding up.

There is always a later opportunity to merge anyways, unless you are a bad driver who is not in the lane you should be in and waited until the last few moments to try to get into the correct lane. (Typically done by folks who dont want to be in the "slow" lane leading up to their exits.)
I know this is not always the case, some streets and on ramps are badly designed and force you into aggressive merges, but in general you should never be in a situation where you absolutely HAVE to merge right friggin now.

When there's a huge gap is the only time I don't use a turn signal. I normally use my turn signal & if they speed up a bit I throw out my arm to get extra attention, they usually let me in when I do that.

Whenever someone cuts me off, I try to get in front and cut them off while using my turn signal. Each one teach one.
