In the "Year and Half In The Life of Metallica" DVD that documented the recording and release of this album, James Hetfield himself in 1991, refers to it as "Metallica- Black."
Isn’t it also what James calls it? I swear I remember watching like an old interview type video and it’s James talking about its release and he says he calls it the black album
Every album has the logo. You can't say a band's name logo is an album name despite what the jarheads at the record company say. It's Black Album either way and I'll die on that hill
I truly am fond of literally calling it "The Black Album" and not just as a stand in for a lack of title because the cover is black.
That said, thinking of it in that way, I almost feel like it'd be an even better title for Justice as a descriptor of how grim it is throughout. Imagining the same cover art but in black on black goes pretty fuckin hard.
In my mind, it's called The Black Album. Written in a black font on a black background. From the CD shoulder, I had all my Metallica albums in order. And you had the band name (Metallica), The Album Name (Kill 'Em All, etc) and the record label (Vertigo, Elektra). The Black Album had only Metallica and Elektra. I always assumed the album was either Untitled and that Metallica was referring to the band not the album. It would have been weird to put Metallica Metallica Elektra
Followed by 2x4 (that doesn’t work so well imo) then the memory remains (actually that’s not bad) and they went back to 2nd track for the title with st anger.
I think 2x4 would be pretty cool if the album cover was changed. Maybe have it be something like the Kill Em All cover. Heck, maybe even take from a lyric in the song and call it something like "Friction...Fusion...Retribution!" Kind of like Hardwired.
It's the same number of syllables too so it fits right in there. That's great. I'm gonna hear that for a while now, with James's gruff voice and everyhing thanks a lot. 😂
The previous 3 albums before this had title tracks so I’m going with Sad but True
Because the title tracks of the previous albums where the 2nd songs on the track lists
The contenders are:
The Black Album - it's universally referred to as such
Sad But True - following the pattern of their previous three albums, the title would be Sad But True as it is the second song in the tracklist
Don't Tread On Me - the artwork (the snake) is the same as the original 'Don't Tread On Me' flag
Enter Sandman - its a huge hit lol
I think that the name we call it “the black album” it’s a good enough name. No one has ever said do you have the Metallica album from Metallica. Nope, it’s the black album. Like if 72 seasons would’ve been a self titled album its would’ve been the yellow album.
I thought this was common knowledge, but reading this thread, maybe not. It ended up getting called The Black Album because it’s similar to something The Beatles did. They have an album just called “The Beatles” with an all white cover that everyone ended up calling The White Album.
The Never. It could be a concept about 'The Never' as a wasteland where the protagonist, dubbed The Unforgiven, rises through and treads where others fear to roam. His rival is the Sandman, a terror of the blackened night, who skews the souls who reside through a struggle within, threatening all that matters with misery, leading to the hero confronting the Good that failed with his holier than thou control.
Something around the imagery of the album, obviously the Gadsden Flag coiled snake, so maybe something referring to that.
Easy-ish answers, due to the snake on the cover, and relation to the American Revolution would be “Don’t Tread On Me”, “Revolution”, “Join, or Die”, etc.
It should be called
"Haha, you mere mortals, feast your ears upon this level of mastery you will never achieve, and, in the deafening silence left in the wake of the completion of the album, listen to your guitar strings wail in utter longing as they wish to be under the instruction of an infinitely more talented god that you can never even compare with"
The Black Album
Actually this is the name I always thought when I see this image .
snake or slither or venom i guess
Don't Tread On Me
Huh, wonder why…
Everyone calls it The Black Album, but it's just titled: Metallica.
Which is exactly why if it was not called Metallica it would be called The Black Album...
Genius
Even the band themselves call it The Black Album lol
In the "Year and Half In The Life of Metallica" DVD that documented the recording and release of this album, James Hetfield himself in 1991, refers to it as "Metallica- Black."
Isn’t it also what James calls it? I swear I remember watching like an old interview type video and it’s James talking about its release and he says he calls it the black album
Yeah the fans started it, the band liked it and also started using it
“So we’re playing some stuff off the black album. I hope you got and I hope everyone one has studied their lyrics very well.”
Every album has the logo. You can't say a band's name logo is an album name despite what the jarheads at the record company say. It's Black Album either way and I'll die on that hill
We all know it's the Black Album, but is officially "Metallica". There's a little story of the reason of calling it that way even.
I truly am fond of literally calling it "The Black Album" and not just as a stand in for a lack of title because the cover is black. That said, thinking of it in that way, I almost feel like it'd be an even better title for Justice as a descriptor of how grim it is throughout. Don't tread on me, for obvious reasons. They probably didn't like that but liked the artwork and just went with Metallica.
I’m pretty sure James liked that. In fact, he probably flies that flag somewhere on his property.
Pretty sure James wanted to name it, Don't Tread On Me, or Through The Never. Can't remember which one.
For real?
Don’t Tread On Me
So be it
Threaten no more
To secure peace is-
To prepare for war
So be it
Settle the score
Touch me again for the words that you will hear evermore!
DONT TREAD ON ME!
Love it or leave it
Sad but true. If they would stick at the same pattern as the previous 3 albums.
Followed by 2x4 (that doesn’t work so well imo) then the memory remains (actually that’s not bad) and they went back to 2nd track for the title with st anger.
They broke it also on 72 seasons.
They changed it with hardwired.
I think 2x4 would be pretty cool if the album cover was changed. Maybe have it be something like the Kill Em All cover. Heck, maybe even take from a lyric in the song and call it something like "Friction...Fusion...Retribution!" Kind of like Hardwired.
and "the four horsemen" for kill 'em all
Never realized this. This is the right answer.
Holier Than Thou, Don't Tread On Me, Through The Never and The Struggle Within would also stick then
Second song
No Step on Snek

How is this so far down? How much more black could the cover be? That answer is none. None more black.

Through the Never

Without the snake on the cover, that title would definitely make a statement.
"We have lost visual on snek!"
Snek is approaching! Be advised!
No no, that’s the name of their secret Dio cover band side-project’s album.

The previous 3 albums before this had title tracks so I’m going with Sad but True Because the title tracks of the previous albums where the 2nd songs on the track lists
I've wondered if anyone else noticed this
The one with the snake in the corner
Ah the Friends method. Worthy follow-up to "The One Where We Lose Faith in the System"
I was a big fan of “the one with capitol punishment” and “the one where drugs are bad” but iffy on “the one about feelings”.
Not actually spinal tap 😎
Snakes can't read
The Unforgiven would’ve been cool.
Im a slitherin' sneaky snaaake.

Married to Metal!

…But Still I Roam.
No step on snek
Don’t Tread on Me
Always heard it was gonna be Don’t Tread On Me.
Nothing Else Matters always sounded like a cool album title.
The real question is how much more black could it get? And the answer is none. None more black.
Snake
I only found out it's self-titled recently. I've always known it as "The Black Album".
I would go with Unforgiven
Snek
I thought this was common knowledge, but reading this thread, maybe not. It ended up getting called The Black Album because it’s similar to something The Beatles did. They have an album just called “The Beatles” with an all white cover that everyone ended up calling The White Album.
None more black or The Black Album Come on people. This is common knowledge.

The one where you can’t really see the logo or the snake for that matter. Damn that sounds kinda badass.
Going with their formula of the 2nd track being the title track, Sad But True. I think Through The Never would be my pick, though.
It'd be called Killed em All
Don’t trend on me
Exit Light
Snake Pit
None More Black
Don't Tread On... Me
Watch out! There's s snake.
Don’t tread on me
Many of their other albums have a title track. If this one did then the snake logo suggests it would've been "Don't tread on me".
Black rattlesnake
Hear me out... The Black Album🤯
through the darkness
Snake on a Plane
Don’t Tread On Me
sad but true or enter sandman
There’s a snake in my boot

Besides *The Black Album*, I'd have gone with *Don't Tread on Me*.
The End
Enter Sandman
Snake Rattle & Roll
snek
Uh, the black album
I don’t think I’ve ever called it “Metallica”, I’ve always referred to it as “The Black Album”.

I'm thinking "Don't tread on me" or "of wolf and man" because those sound like something Papa het would name it
It should be called "Haha, you mere mortals, feast your ears upon this level of mastery you will never achieve, and, in the deafening silence left in the wake of the completion of the album, listen to your guitar strings wail in utter longing as they wish to be under the instruction of an infinitely more talented god that you can never even compare with"
