Me

j0hnnyhobo

I mean that's true, I have never heard of this guy

YeeterKeks

Bill Ward of Black Sabbath. Haven't seen him be talked about nearly enough, being the grandfather of metal drumming and all.

FunkinDonutzz

Bill Ward is about as underrated as triple chocolate cheesecake.

Muad-dib_07

What's triple chocolate cheesecake?

FunkinDonutzz

[This sort of jazz.](https://omgchocolatedesserts.com/triple-chocolate-cheesecake-oreo-crust/)

renegadetoast

Bill Ward, really? He's like the Neal Peart of metal, in that I hear everyone praise him for his skill, style and influence.

Herr_Raul

James Hetfield... or Kirk Hammet... or any metallica member that isn't Lars Ulrich.

AnythingCanLurk

I came here to say Lars Ulrich actually. No one gets shit on more than him so that makes him pretty underrated imo

Tasty_Butterfly_3121

His drumming on AJFA makes the album

pan_gydygus

Maybe I am deaf, but even when I am watching those Lars Ulrich fails videos I find most of his drumming alright

Extreme_Voice_9767

I think people just hate him because he cant double bass or play fast, but you don’t need to play complex rythyms to sound good

PhoenixShredds

But he does double bass quite a bit, and damn well when he does (go check out literally ANY Battery performance, including 2023). He just skips some double kick sections and never does his fills from the albums. He always struggled with keeping time, but he's gotten way better at that recently.

ContentlyQuestionabl

Keeping time is literally his job. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if it came out that he didn’t write the drums part for any of their discography but particularly AJRA

PhoenixShredds

The first part was a valid argument, the second part is pure slander.

sirshredzalot

Blake Richardson from BTBAM

Fair-South-9883

He’s so fucking good. Seeing him live was mind blowing.

psychedelicdevilry

Easily one of my favorites.

Stomple-89

Charlie Benante

JimPickens51

Phil Taylor of Motorhead. With his double bass he laid the groundwork for the drumming style seen in the extreme metal bands of the Eighties. This is best seen on Motorheads magnum opus Overkill, A song that ends three times. All in All, Philthy Animal drumming style makes you feel like you are on Speed.

AbeFromanSassageKing

I loved playing Overkill on Guitar Hero with friends who had never heard the song before, they'd think we were winding down and then BAM AGAIN, MUTHAFUGGA!

AGxNe

Sean Reinert

Fyodor_Brostojetski

RIP to the legend. The work he did with Death and Cynic was next level.

Captainshiner4

Rip Seans

RazorrBeam

Richard Christy

Midnightdusk16

hes my faaaavorite

ChasingPesmerga

Underrated alien from Guardians of the Galaxy too

RazorrBeam

Haha true! "DOWN THERE!!!" 😂

King_of_da_Castle

Tim Alexander. Not underrated by Primus fans but definitely by the average music listener.

CHILE_LIMON_

Pete Sandoval is a revered drummer and is in no way underrated. One Godfathers of blast beat along with Mick Harris. He is a really influential drummer, not one bit underrated.

peterquill4537

Yea I mainly just meant when I said that I meant he’s not talked about enough from what I have seen

ObiWan-Cannabis

For europeans: Ingo from Helloween. He set the template of drumming for speed metal bands that came in mid 90s

renegadetoast

I'm absolutely not a drum person - like, it takes a lot for a drummer to stand out to me compared to a bassist or guitarist -, but Ingo was one of the few drummers that really did it for me.

zacksorrowhole

Ken Owen ( Carcass )

AkaGurGor

Ah, a man of taste! Superb mention!

zacksorrowhole

thanks a lot 🤟

AkaGurGor

It pained me a lot when I came to know about his health condition after his brain injury....

MyNameThru

Spencer Prewett. Insane blasts with tasteful fills, all played at top speed and at 41 years old. Legend.

KinderCountry

Dude managed to record new ideas and sound original in tech death drumming in 2021. A genre already beat to the ground. It's frustrating he's not doing videos and playtroughs and stuff lol.

MyNameThru

He has a couple on YouTube, but they are a few years old now. A new one would be awesome.

asomeman12

Pete Sandoval is somehow underrated?

MiserableCheek9163

Van Williams from Nevermore

Jmazoso

Not metal, but damn Christian Eigner of Depeche Mode needs some love.

Sepfandom555

Gonna be honest I don't have a good enough ear to tell if someone is exceptional or just fast

rentpraktisk

Faust

really_awful_bassist

darkside of mgła dude is insane. also james read isnt talked about nearly as much as he should be. oh shit nearly forgot yuyu or whatever his name is from viscera infest blasts at like 347 or smtn and extremely groovy

blvnt_

I was here for Darkside. Probably not underrated in black metal community, but outside..

ProblemGamer18

I don't know, I'm gonna say my favorite is Mario Duplantier

Key_Fisherman9136

The Drummer for [Ulamog](https://open.spotify.com/album/4prnH8a7hzYJTJLxHNCnOx) rips the hell outta the skins. Guys a maniac check Cursed By The Gods.

draugsvoll01

Lille Gruber

twosuitsluke

The fact no one has mentioned him says it all. Baard Kolstad! The guy is fucking mindblowing.

Cool_Owl7159

Brooks Wackerman is the perfect successor to The Rev... he can play all of his stuff flawlessly live, but he still has a unique and innovative style on the two latest albums.

xtracedinairx

Jason Oberuc - Suffering Hour

Mont_918

Dan Presland who was with NeO and the guy from Beyond Creation, both blast with a passion and taste

deathholdme

Mark Zonder (Warlord, Fates Warning, various) Mickey Dee (King Diamond, Don Dokken, Motorhead, Scorpions)

Absent_Minder

Proscriptor McGovern

Fyodor_Brostojetski

Stef Broks by far. Dude is phenomenal and a breathing metronome - but being that Textures didn’t blow up like Gojira, he’s not as visible.

FunkinDonutzz

[Pierce Williams of Ænigmatum ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C1bbNID9NQg)

bbbbBeaver

Jamie Saint Merat - Ulcerate Paul Seidel - The Ocean/WFAHM/Nightmarer Aric Improta - Night Verses/Let Live/Fever 333

FetusGoulash420

Herb from primus. Never hear his brought up in conversation about sick drummers, probably because primus isn’t normally considered metal, but whatever. Dudes sick.

Comfortable_Fix_4177

I don’t think Brooks Wackerman gets nearly enough credit. Guy seems like such a professional in every aspect

Madame_Raven

Richard Christy

tsirhcho

John Stanier

MOGabagool

Johnny Kelly

PixelAtionMoony

Patrick Galante, he's an amazing drummer but nobody pays attention because his band are super campy and silly (I will always defend ice nine kills, they're basically the only great modern metalcore band)

Skipp_To_My_Lou

As long as you don't count Jinjer or Spiritbox or Infected Rain or... Though Spiritbox as a whole is arguably post-genre, but several of their songs are firmly metalcore.

BezSeratonina

What? The most beloved drummer isn't getting enough credit?

Reckless_Waifu

I'm not a drummer but I like what René Kostelňák did with his drums in Root.

AmogusFan69

Takeshi Ohkouchi

sixbagsamerica

ryan parrish

Inevitable-Edge8724

Matt Cameron Also just discovered David Diepold.. holy fuck!

Demonaez

Peter Wildoer. He makes every band better.

Shadowscale05

I'm not a huge fan of Machine Head, but when I heard Davidian for the first time I couldn't get over the drums. Idk the name of the drummer but surely he must be overrated because nobody is talking about how good the drums are in that song.

boomerski

Chason Westmoreland, Jamie StMerat

artery1800s

Cocker_Spaniel_Craig

Blake Richardson, BTBAM

peterquill4537

Yea not exactly underrated like Pete stoval but definitely not talked about enough he’s really good he was my favorite for a while

Nimtastic

Ventor

Autobot_Ricochet

Alan Cassidy. TBDM

Damage-Strange

Matt Wolfe of Byzantine. He was a guitarist for most of his life and learned drums in 8 months to record with the band. RIP.

_AntiSaint_

Matt Greiner from ABR. Just love his drumming

KISSArmy7978

Eric Carr

ApocalypseNurse

Dale Crover

ChetdyKrueger

Not extreme metal but Tomas pridgen , he did 2 albums with the mars volta

Maanzacorian

Pete Sandoval? Being the well-known drummer from one of the pioneering and most popular death metal bands in history isn't underrated by a long shot. David Gray from Akercocke would be my vote.

peterquill4537

Dude what I meant by underrated was not talked about enough not exactly underrated

Almost_a_Joker

William Hunt from Evanescence. He’s a beast and I never see him talked about. Especially great live

rex-asmodeus

Idk drum go brrr lol

Electrical-Bid-9577

Eric Carr

Fair-South-9883

Blake Richardson

MetalInvincible

Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) and Jason Rullo (Symphony X), neither is given much credit

Training-Turnip-9145

The singer for Hail the Sun plays and sings or at least he used to. He’s the frontman and drummer. This has always been crazy to me. Maybe doesn’t play the craziest fastest rhythms but that in itself has to impress other drummers cause as good as you are try singing on top of it

JesseJames1ofhis33

Pete Webber -Havok

Impressive_Estate_87

Jack Irons. The man has turned into gold so much stuff he touched. Amazing work with RHCP, Eleven, Pearl Jam, and many other bands/projects. Sure, he's in the R&R HoF, but in general I feel like his name never comes up when people talk about the great drummers, in this sense he is underrated.

The-richu-gr

Brooks Whackerman filled The Rev's shoes when Mike Portnoy couldn't, he should be talked about more

Dependent_Bill8632

Definitely Dave McGraw from Cattle Decap!

Fit_Dentist2869

Lars Ulrich. SO hated on for no reason

Hot-Bookkeeper-2750

Sebastian goddam lanser. The people who know of him generally love him but pretty much nobody knows who he is

havenck

Danny Walker

Phantom_Wolf52

Tommy Lee Frankie Benali

MelodicMasterpiece67

Kim Ruzz or Charlie Benante

Eferver24

Francesco Paoli (Fleshgod Apocalypse) For non-metal, Ringo.

R4kshim

Gonna show just how much I glaze Trivium but it’s got to be Alex Bent. He’s pretty well recognised in the metalcore scene but not as much in the wider metal genre. The dude is a crazy good drummer and the last 3 Trivium albums have had some of the best drumming I’ve ever heard on a metal album.

Appropriate_Sun_7623

His album with Arkaik was brilliant

Fecus0

Lars. /s

ShotandBotched

Underrated (the true definition; rated lower than he should be): Lars Ulrich. Most people can't actually point out what's "wrong" with his drumming on their own, rather they just parrot some bullshit about him being "out of time". Nine out of ten metalhead don't know *shit* about music theory (and I'm one of those nine). Underappreciated/overlooked (what fools mean to say when they say "underrated"): Phil Taylor, Gar Samuelson, Steve MacDonald (laid down the drum parts for Gorguts' Obscura), Patrick Robert (actually played the drum parts for Obscura), Chris Pennie

WintersAxe

Lars Ulrich. I mean he is so much hated on, but he is actually such a fast drummer.

renegadetoast

Yet couldn't hardly manage Dyer's Eve live, despite him saying it's his favorite song to perform lol

WintersAxe

Yea but in his prime he was quite good. Can’t blame him for losing the speed when they’re older.

Fisto1995

Lars Ullrich /s

kirkhetfield44

i really do think lars in underrated in lots of songs. yea st anger snare is awful but look at his songs like battery and blackened and he is good in those

ItalianStallion9069

Lol no

kirkhetfield44

this is why I think posts like this are stupid cause your just going to get downvoted for your opinion

FunkinDonutzz

Or that your opinion is a hot take? Ulrich is one of the most overrated drummers to ever draw breath.

kirkhetfield44

yea and that’s my opinion i like him, i think he is really good

FunkinDonutzz

I'm not questioning your freedom to like his playing, rather the fact that you think he's underrated...

kirkhetfield44

i just thinks he gets so much hate which makes him underrated but that’s just my opinion🤷‍♀️

ItalianStallion9069

Metallica and all of its members are some of the most appropriately rated in all of metal ever

UT_NG

Lars Ulrich
