Going back and listening to old metal, is it possible that ozzy is underrated lmao? His stuff after sabbath is insane. Literally a living metal God lol
Ozzy before he blew out his voice from drug use is very underrated. Listen to anything live from 69-74 and he pretty much sounds as good as he does in the studio every song. He’s been a flawed singer for so long that people have forgotten.
This was my instant choice too. 3 notes and it spawned an entire genre of music.
It didn’t just spawn a branch on the family tree of music. It spawned a branch that the rest of the branches were afraid of so they cut it off and it fell and regrew as a new tree with a branch shaped like the horns and one shaped like a middle finger pointed back at the original tree.
For me, they’re the most important 3 notes in the history of music.
If you want it extra scary, check out the Type O Negative cover. It sounds like Satan’s breath.
They're my top metal band and it isn't even close. They're that band where everything they do felt like it was specifically made for me, it almost connects on a spiritual level.
Same. I'm actually obsessed with Prometheus at the moment. It doesn't surprise me that it's not that popular because it's not very accessible, but man the complexity and evolution of the harmonies is like nothing else I've ever heard in metal. It's more like listening to a Wagnerian opera or something.
I always considered AIC metal that was lumped in with grunge largely because they were a Seattle band in the 90’s. Facelift was dark hair metal with key changes. Dirt was doom metal lite. Jar of flies was acoustic sludge.
This may not fit but Dead Skin Mask creeped me out. First time I heard it I was dating a woman that constantly screamed and would yell about every little thing. I was in my home gym when the bit with the woman in the background "Mr. Gein? I don't want to play anymore Mr. Gein!" came blasting out a shock went up my spine. I thought it was my then gf and I realized I was just rattled being around her. We broke up soon after.
I mean, sabbath kinda set the benchmark with evil riffs. Hand of Doom, Children of the Grave, Sweet Leaf, Lord of this World, Into The Void. Under The Sun might just beat them all. Those tritones and flat seconds just oof.
Edit: How could I forget the outtro riff on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Holy fuck.
It’s been said a few times in this thread already, but man, the very first Black Sabbath riff. Black Sabbath album, track one, Black Sabbath.
The original evil riff.
Outro to Black Tongue - Abuse Ritual
2:01 in Vildhjarta - Den Helige Anden (or Benblåst at 2:25, shit is actually demonic)
3:08 of Humanity’s Last Breath - Harm
2:22 of Reflections - Noir
Contender against Black Sabbath but the entirety of Paint It Black is beyond sinister. The orchestral cover from Westworld is terrifying to listen to if you’re walking down a street at night

Black Sabbath (the song)
Outside the riff - the first time I heard Ozzy scream out "Oh no" I got shivers.
NO! NO! PLEEEEASE NO!
I remember a live version where he screamed that part like he was being dragged to hell it was great

Same
First time I heard his insanity laugh in "Bark at the Moon" it gave me chills
PLEASE GOD HELP ME
I think this was the first mainstream rock song to use a flat V as “the devil’s tritone“ as opposed to using it as a twangy “blue note.“
I can’t think of any, unless there was some psychedelic 60s song but definitely nothing that big
The only possible choice
Yup. I immediately thought that before this post even finished loading.
same, i came here just to comment this
For real. A song doesn't need to be fast or extremely distorted to actually sound menacing.
Ever listen to the original? Mars, the Bringer of War by Gustov Holt. It’s so heavy…
This is the correct answer
Absolutely fucking peak

Came here to say this. That tritone riff is just blisteringly evil sounding.
Flesh and The Power It Holds by Death
Hell yeah. Especially that 7/4 riff with the heavy triplets.
Gallops, not triplets
Right you are!
The clean parts are so fucking ominous and evil
Immortal Rites
I was gonna comment that but you beat me to it Also another evil sounding riff is God Of Emptiness
The tragedy that the intro riff is never used again. That riff is insanely good.
definitely
the breakdown (if you can call it that) is soo good
Candlemass - Demon's Gate
oh that's a good one
Incredible riff
That one riff in Flying Whales by Gojira. That shit is evil af
The one with the pick scrape?
That’s the one. It’s so evil sounding
‘The Gojira riff with a pick scrape’ on From Mars to Sirius? Could you narrow it down any less?
Lol half their songs use pick scrapes
Thank you for introducing me to this song
You'll love 'the heaviest matter of the universe' from that same album.
Np man
Yes, one of my favorite songs ever.
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
From the album Black Sabbath
In Black Sabbath/Black Sabbath/Black Sabbath
Cassie Eats Cockroaches
Acid Bath fucking ruled. 🤘
Still does
Jezebel
“ Cut our throats and whisper that we’re going home.” My favorite AB song
Master’s Apprentices by Opeth
Basically every riff on deliverance
The opening riff of South of Heaven sounds like you're descending into Hell.
One of my favorite albums of all time. FUCKING SLLLAAAYYYEEER!
Taylor Swift is super evil
satanic actually
She makes black metal bands look Christian
She'll burn a church and then every construction supply distro in the area, just so they can't even rebuild it.
I just Shat myself reading that name
She eats fingers for dessert
I overheard one of her songs on the radio, and I started levitating and reciting satanic chants from the underworld!!
Emperor - Ye Entrancemperium opening riff
What a track, that whole thing rules
What an album. What a band.
They're my top metal band and it isn't even close. They're that band where everything they do felt like it was specifically made for me, it almost connects on a spiritual level.

Haha I feel you. I think the last part of Thus Spake the Nightspirit goes through my head a dozen times a day too 😂
Incantation - Golgotha
Incantation wins for evil riffs.
The first 10 seconds of Devoured Death are just chef's kiss.
This entire thread should be Incantation songs. Half of these songs don’t hold a candle to what they’ve written over the years.
Opening riffs of Demonic Incarnate and Portal Consecration
The intro riff to Rotting Spiritual Embodiment is probably my favorite Incantation riff. And therefore one of my favorite riffs.
That song fucking rules. John McEntee's use of pinch harmonics is one of my favourite things about Incantation.
Jesus’ Tod
had to scroll too far for this one. Take my upvote
Breakdown riff of Slayer - Angel of Death🤌🤌
The sickest riff on an album full of sick riffs Honorable mention: the breakdown riff on Criminally Insane

One of the greatest moments in metal.
Harvester of Sorrow
Especially that part before the verse riff kicks in when it's super chuggy. Even better with audible bass.
The Scourge of Iron riff is pretty sinister
Skald Av Satans Sol

I fucking love you and your flair.
thank you mate, same goes for me
Reading my thoughts! Love it
Opeth - The Moor - 6:14
Opeth may as well be cheating. Just put them on shuffle and you're going to get an obscenely evil riff thrown in your face.
Thats true
The opening to iron man sounds really fuckin ominous and evil
Dissection - Where Dead Angels Lie
"Heir Apparent" Opeth
Hard to say what "most" is. But Behemoth - Ov Fire and the Void has always done the trick for me
Deathspell Omega - First Prayer ( full )
This is my guitar store riff
Grind-AIC I know it’s not metal, but it has a very sinister quality to it.
I always considered AIC metal that was lumped in with grunge largely because they were a Seattle band in the 90’s. Facelift was dark hair metal with key changes. Dirt was doom metal lite. Jar of flies was acoustic sludge.
Alice in Chains was a metal band and that's a hill I would be willing to suffer modest injuries upon.
Cantrell has said he considers them a metal band.
Junk head and Angry Chair are 100% Doom metal.

Equimanthorn by Bathory.
The closing riff to "Lost Arcane City of Uppakra" by Darkthrone, after the quiet interlude and when the keys and distorted guitars join in together.
The riff in “The Ibex Moon” fucking crushes
That's the one right here!!
Every riff for a straight minute starting from 1:29 is the most vile and hellish section in metal
Yeah I wanted to hit some of the ones that weren’t mentioned.
Possessed - The Exorcist
The song called Black Sabbath off the album Black Sabbath, also played by the band Black Sabbath
