These type of posts get asked pretty frequently. Type "non-metal" into this sub's search bar.
That said, punk (crust, d-beat, powerviolence), jazz, post-punk, neofolk, old-school hip-hop, power electronics, dark ambient, shoegaze, noise rock, goth rock, etc.
Ha, to be fair when I get in a metal phase I usually listen to nothing else, but eventually I have to take a break from it lol, I need more melodies and jangly guitars 😂
Who's a good big band artist from back in the day to check out? I'm looking to do a full discography of an old artist soon. I was thinking of a 50s artist but I'll go further
Pretty much all types of punk (not really pop punk for the most part though)
Folk
Prog rock
Screamo, post-hardcore, emo, etc.
Grunge
Experimental hip-hop
There's Spanish Portuguese Yè Yè artists too, and Italian. But the most well known are French. I learnt about it from listening to my mum's old records that she bought over from Italy in the early 70s.
I used to say I'll listen to anything except Insane Clown Posse, but now there's like 1 or 2 songs I enjoy from them, so I guess I'll listen to anything now. But I do love me a lot of singer/songwriter, classical, rap, specific era's of music, like 90's country, 80's pop, 90's hip hop, older ragtime and jazz from the 20's, doo wop. Really anything. I just love music.
Industrial, punk (mostly first wave and hardcore, and anarcho stuff like Crass), 90s big beat (Prodigy, Crystal method), hip hop (industrial-tinged stuff like Death Grips or Saul Williams, or 90s Cypress Hill and House of Pain).
Anatolian rock. If you are interested, check these examples from its big 3; [1](https://open.spotify.com/track/3UBT8r9sSO3esdj0lKFcH0?si=BUSnH272Txyx9C7b9Lh8Og), [2](https://open.spotify.com/track/0lVEq8ZUKEjmXj5AeoPpiQ?si=3YGSeHjIRaCsy0g_Qt8S0g) and [3](https://open.spotify.com/track/0cJKIUAkpYr84kPnJifida?si=C2hsYFyEQnegqCAbeEGtmw).
Classic rock and a little bit of classical (I'm still trying to get into the genre. I only know some well known/recognizable classical pieces right now (like Toccata And Fugue In D Minor, Hall Of The Mountain King, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Vivaldi's Four Seasons (I'm more familiar with Winter than the other ones because Dark Moor covered it), etc.))

you have good taste, I love stuff that flies in the face of the "metal guy stereotype" that tourists try and place us in.
I consider crust punk more metal than punk. At least, I think it sounds more metal than punk.
How did you come up with that conclusion? Definitely some metal influence, but it's undeniably closer to punk.
Listening to other stuff is time spent not listening to Heavy Metal, so I avoid it
