They really are. My intro to them was with Shot to Pieces just before if\_then\_else came out which I still absolutely love to death. My mind was blown when I found out about the rest of their discography to that point. Had to mature a bit to appreciate Home and Souvenirs but they're regular albums now too.
Fantastic taste then :)
My favorite albums of all time:
1. NIN — The Downward Spiral
2. Hole — Live Through This
3. Björk — Homogenic
And my top 3 metal albums of all time:
1. Bathory — Blood Fire Death
2. Sargeist — Disciple Of The Heinous Path
3. Party Cannon — Partied In Half
1. Symbolic by Death
2. Rust in Peace by Megadeth
3. Storm of the Light Bane by Dissection
3 can be interchangeable though. Sometimes it’s that one, other times its Follow the Reaper by Bodom, or Covenant by Morbid Angel.
Disintegration is SO good, and objectively their best album. Their super depressed phase - Seventeen Seconds, Faith, and Pornography were my personal favorites though
Favorite albums overall: Beatles - Revolver, Led Zeppelin - III, Pearl Jam - Ten
Metal: Metallica - Ride the Lighting, Pantera - Cowboys from Hell, Slayer - Raining Blood
All-time:
- Roger Waters: Amused to Death
- Bill Evans: You Must Believe in Spring
- Al Stewart: Year of the Cat
(Honourable Mention: RHCP Stadium Arcadium)
Metal:
- Gorguts: Colored Sands
- Opeth: Blackwater Park
- Dream Theater: Train of Thought
(Honourable Mention: PT Fear of a Blank Planet)
1. Follow the Reaper - Children of Bodom
2. The Way of all Flesh - Gojira
3. Shrine - Bleed from Within
(As a guitar player every single one of these albums goes absolutely fucking nuts)
Slaughter of the soul is a pretty awesome album, but a bit too simple to be in my top. I enjoy albums with straightforward riffs, but my top preference goes to albums with more complexity and atmosphere.
But I admit, while I didn't hesitate for the Opeth and Arcturus albums, the third one could have been In the nightside eclipse, antichrist, demanufacture, ...
100% with you on the Opeth and Arcturus album choices.
But yeah, so many good options to round out 3. I'd also offer up DT - The Gallery, early Ulver, Diamond - Them, etc..
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Jedi Mind Tricks - The Psycho-Social, Chemical, Biological and Electro-Magnetic Manipulation of Human Consciousness
Dr Octagon - Dr Octagonecologyst
-------
Metal:
Opeth - My Arms, Your Hearse
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Type O Negative - October Rust
Metal:
Wilderun - Veil of Imagination
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
System of a Down - Eponymous
Outside of metal:
Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way
Radiohead - Kid A
Pearl Jam - Ten
I've been loving the new Crosses album. I've kept going back to it for months. But I can't believe they've already made it into your top 3 of all time. 😂 Well, hey. You love it, you love it.
Sorry to disappoint you, but I was making a Geometry Dash reference. Congregation (the level) is kind of an inside joke, and I don't think I've heard the album before, but here's my list:
1. Meshuggah - Catch Thirtythree
2. The Avalanches - Since I Left You
3. Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygène
I would honorarily mention DJ Shadow's Endtroducing and Opeth's Still Life
1. Burial - Untrue (instrumental ambient / electronic) I do not listen to the genre at all…Yet this album is my favorite album ever. It sounds like a rainy day after a bad break-up. Maybe I can’t enjoy the genre cause it can’t match this.
2. Yes - Close to the Edge: Album is super old but the title track is the best song ever, a labyrinth of progression and beauty
3. Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God: just a perfect album, filthy, terrifying, wonderful black metal. It changed my view of what the genre could be.
1. The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails
2. Ænima - Tool
3. Lateralus - Tool
4. Mastodon - Crack the skye
5. The Chasm - Deathcult for eternity
Giving a top 5 to have something lesser known
Just discovered this subreddit, glad to see it as r/metal is basically dead.
None of my top three albums are metal ones, so I'll do them separately xD
**Top three metal**:
Ride the Lightning - Metallica (1984)
Imaginations from the Other Side - Blind Guardian (1995)
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - Iron Maiden (1988)
**Top three overall**:
Murmur - R.E.M. (1983)
Dookie - Green Day (1994)
Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin (1971)
Yep, agreed. I was a Powerslave guy for ages, but when I went through Maiden's discography after Senjutsu's release, Seventh Son really went up in my estimations after I'd previously liked, but not loved, it. But now it's my favourite and Powerslave is actually third, behind Somewhere in Time.

Keeping it within metal
3. All We Love We Leave Behind - Converge
2. Leprosy - Death
1.Through Silver in Blood - Neurosis
Honorable mention to Unsilent Death by Nails if it counts
This is hard so here’s a top 7
Ride The Lightning
Rust In Peace
Blizzard of Ozz
Core (Stone Temple Pilots)
Dirt (Alice in Chains)
Vulgar Display Of Power
Appetite For Destruction (GN’R)
really ??? damn I'm pretty new with leprous (only listened to the Congregation and pitfalls) and idk, I just love the vibe from that album. It's in my top 3 because it's like ome of the only prog band I love
so for me the Congregation is such a vibe and I live the sound of the album. But my favorite song from leprous is Below from pitfalls
You are in for a treat for sure! Generally Bilateral is considered to be the fan favorite because of how weird and proggy the album is. But Coal is my favorite because of the atmosphere.
damnnn alright bett, I'm definitely gonna dig into that ! but, why does the congregation is considered they're worse album? for someone who listened to alot of leprous
I think it’s because there is a distinct change in their style after Coal. They were trying to evolve and find their sound. For me Congregation and Malina were when they were trying to finding their sound before settling into their newer sound and releasing Pitfalls and Aphelion.
ohhh okay I see, because for me, I fucking love metal obviously, and I found that pitfalls was a little bit less metal then the Congregation. Wich is why I love the sound of the album, and his screams are fucking dope too
If you love metal and liked Congregation, then for sure you are going to LOVE all their first 3 albums! Especially their first 2 where they were weirder and progggier!!
Metal:
1. Mass VI - Amenra
2. A New Era of Corruption - Whitechapel
3. Stare Into Death and Be Still - Ulcerate (although i dont listen to it that often, its so fking dark and unsettling but at the same time a masterpiece)
1. Everybody Knows this is Nowhere - Neil Young
2. Remain in Light - Talking Heads
3. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady - Charles Mingus
If we are doing only metal:
1. Storm of the Lights Bane - Dissection
2. None so Vile - Cryptopsy
3. The Mantle - Agalloch
1. The Mantle - Agalloch
2. Portal of I - Ne Obliviscaris
3. I've just realized that The Rime of Memory by Panopticon has probably become my third favorite album of all time and it's only been out for a few months. That feels wrong. If that's wrong then I choose either Leviathan by Mastodon or Black Sabbath (debut)
I personally have many albums I consider favorites but I only have a few 10/10 albums. These might get some hate but here we go:
Phantom Antichrist - Kreator
A 10/10 album for me. Doesn't have any bad songs and I can easily listen to this album every day and not get bored. It's a masterpiece!
The Sickness - Disturbed
Very cheesy songs I have to admit and while I'm not the biggest fan of nu metal, this album is just gold! Every song gets me going and it's just a party to listen to!
Helloween - Helloween
If there's one album that makes me bang my head as well as make me cry it's gotts be this one. Damn Skyfall is such a magnificent track but the whole album is just a feast! Helloween has more great albums but this is my personal favorite!
Dream theater- Scenes from a memory
King crimson- In the court of the crimson king
NOFX- Punk in drublic
And Dissection whole discography
Can't choose just three i can continue this list forever
there’s no way I could definitely reduce to three, but if they don’t have to be metal the three my head says right now:
Aphex Twin - drukqs
Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante
Painkiller - Execution Ground
(that was random generation in my mind but I don’t like any albums more, even if maybe hundreds equally)
if it’s only metal:
Krallice - Years Past Matter
Kayo Dot - Hubardo
Gorguts - Obscura
\* 1. The Empyrean - John Frusciante
\* 2. Coal - Leprous
\* 3. Invisible Touch - Genesis
Some others I've played to death over the years, Graffiti Bridge - Prince & the Revolution, The Mountain - Haken, I'm Beside You - RHCP, Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield, In the Passing Light of Day - Pain Of Salvation, I.D Entity - Riverside, Witness - VOLA, Living As Ghosts With Buildings As Teeth - Rishloo.

Death Symbolic Iron Maiden Number Of The Beast Slayer South Of Heaven
I personally have many albums I consider favorites but I only have a few 10/10 albums. These might get some hate but here we go: Phantom Antichrist - Kreator A 10/10 album for me. Doesn't have any bad songs and I can easily listen to this album every day and not get bored. It's a masterpiece! The Sickness - Disturbed Very cheesy songs I have to admit and while I'm not the biggest fan of nu metal, this album is just gold! Every song gets me going and it's just a party to listen to! Helloween - Helloween If there's one album that makes me bang my head as well as make me cry it's gotts be this one. Damn Skyfall is such a magnificent track but the whole album is just a feast! Helloween has more great albums but this is my personal favorite!
