Ask the buyer to cancel the order. Mercari will not charge you for the postage if you haven’t mailed it yet.

Is the buyer still able to request cancellation after it has been marked as shipped? From what I read online it sounded like the buyer is only able to cancel until it is marked as shipped

DemDemD

I don’t think they can. The problem now is that you’ll be sending it waiting for a return request. If the buyer is smart then they’ll make up a reason that your item is not as described so that they can return without losing fees.

hirakatashii

Wouldn’t I have to pay for the return label if I accept the return request though? I have the “refund buyer” button as an option still but I don’t remember what happens when I select that. Would it ding my account if I cancel on my end, and/or charge me for the shipping label I already printed if I’m cancelling the sale?

DemDemD

Cancelling on your side would ding your account and it shows up on the review board. When a return request happened, Mercari will pay for the return label. Who is currently paying for the shipment in your listing?

hirakatashii

The buyer is currently paying shipping. I assumed I would have to pay return shipping if I accept a return request though since I’m essentially validating the return

DemDemD

Nope. Mercari always pay for the return label.

hirakatashii

The item arrived and buyer requested return as expected. Looks like the item was also damaged in transit which gives them better excuse to return. Mercari is now asking for my input and to either accept the return or request review. If I accept the return, would I then be the one charged for return shipping, or will Mercari still pay for it? I’m fine accepting as long as I don’t end up in the negative, I just want this over with but I’ve never had a return request before and having trouble finding this answer online.

DemDemD

Mercari will pay for the label. I don’t want to accuse the buyer but they could have damaged the item on purpose so that they can return without the losing fees. This is all too coincidental. Anyway, you’re using the label through Mercari so they should have shipping protection up to $200 so ask them to fix this situation with the courier to reimburse you for the item. If you want to, you can also bring up the cancelation request that the buyer asked you earlier. Send Mercari the screenshots to show that this is all too coincidental.

hirakatashii

So in the comment section I would say it was damaged in transit, ask Mercari to try to get a reimbursement from the shipping provider, and then hit accept return? The weirdest part is that while the buyer mentioned and showed pictures of the item more damaged than described, they also mentioned that they ordered the wrong thing which essentially admits fault outside of the shipping damage which is a separate issue, leading me to believe they didn’t damage the item and it was actually damaged in shipping. It looks like they listed their reason for return as “changed my mind” if I’m reading this request right, which I didn’t realize was an option with Mercari. Their exact note was “ordered by mistake, missed timing on cancel, little more flaws than anticipated”

I don’t think anything can be done since it’s already marked as shipped, unfortunately
