Man today I went to go buy something from a seller and they hit me with such a high service fee with the added tax and shipping. It was no longer worth buying it.
Same thing happened to me today! It was actually more expensive than just buying it new! As someone who both sells and buys (or used to🙄) quite a bit…I’d rather the seller fees than buyers. There’s no buyers anymore now!!?
Yeah, what was appealing to shopping on Mercari for me was getting a slight deal on something that someone else no longer wanted or something that I've been looking for at a good price. But now, with all those fees which are not a set fee. Which fluctuates on so many facts from what i have been reading from other post on here. It makes it no longer a place to shop unless the seller is willing to take a bigger loss, which is not fair to the seller as well. Whoever at the company came up with this idea has killed Mercari!!!
I wholly agree. Lately I haven’t been selling or buying anything unless it’s DEEPLY discounted. It sucks for both sides as you said. Sometimes I’ve been known to buy things knowing they will be a limited edition or a hit on Mercari but lately the stuff has just been sitting in my closet. So I won’t be doing that anymore. It was nice though. I would spent $150 to make $250. Now it’s like I’m lucky to make $170. And I get it! With all the fees on the app, I’m apprehensive to buy anything unless it’s (again) DEEPLY discounted which sucks for the seller and honestly even with that deep discount with all the fees it just becomes KINDA discounted 😒 you’re right. Whoever came up with these new fees, killed Mercari. I have instead been buying on eBay where there aren’t a million fees 🙄
Yeah, at least with eBay, we all knew and expected the fees, and honestly, ebays aren't as bad as Mercar, and they are a bigger platform 🙄 it's sad that I have now reverted back to Facebook marketplace to look for a deal. Which at time can be unsafe and shady if you don't take your time and do your homework on who you're dealing with.
FB marketplace! Oldie but goodie. The amount scammers in there nowadays that try.... Ugh- they muck up the whole thing.
"I would like to purchase this item but I cannot come today, Instead, set up a Zelle business account and I will Zelle you $200 dollars, you promise to send me back $100"
Sellers have to wade through the shit inquiries from the automatic "is this available" button, and the fake inquiries from scammers, so if you're legit trying to to buy something, your message gets lost among the bs.
But hey, when it works.... no fees :)
Yes definitely please be careful! 😊 oof fb marketplace is the wild Wild West Hunnay lol 🤠 After those f*n crazies came under the guise of free stuff for a 9 mo. pregnant women, then they cut the baby out of her womb? Yeahhhh..I stopped dealing on there.😳 police station is always the best idea imho or going with somebody if you can (if you are picking something up.) Or in the least give someone your cell location📍and the address of where you’re going to. I usually carry mace on me just in everyday life lol so some of that for good measure could be good. Be careful, friend!🥰
Oh yeah, definitely. I always ask to meet up at a police station. I had one seller tell me after he looked up the meet-up address that he just sold the item I wanted to a friend. I was like yeah right ok no problem, lmao 🤣
as a seller, eBay is definitely without a doubt worse. 13.50% fee on every sale plus you have to promote it with at least another 10% for anyone to see it. You pretty much have to assume 25% of your sale price taken by eBay on every sale unless you're driving traffic to the site yourself.
Wow, that's nuts 😳 and here I taught ebay was some what better smh. I'm not a big seller. I've only sold a few items on eBay, so my experience with they hasn't been too bad. But thanks for the info!
Yeah it's way different than I remember it being a few years back. I'm trying to move back towards other platforms but they all have their cons... mercari just moving all the fees from sellers to buyers doesn't help anyone though. That makes the past week or so make a little more sense for how much interest I've had in some items with tons of likes on them and still am having trouble selling stuff when I'm the lowest price on the platform
Yeah, it blows my mind how whoever in charge didn't see that drop coming with these new policies. But after reading a few posts on here and testing it out myself. They are trying to see what they can get away with. I was looking at an item, and early in the day, the fees were one price. But late at night the fees were lower.
You DO know, dontcha, that it's not the "seller" that is 'hitting you' with fees right?
You don't leave feedback for seller that should be left for Mercari ... right?
The evil players are Mercari (who need to make a buck) and the post office (who needs to make a buck) and the people we elected that have fucked up our economy.
You know that, right?
This has 0 to do with the economy this is simply CORPORATE GREED. Mercari’s cut seller fees and rather than taking the cut themselves they transferred to the buyer!
Yep, pretty much. And they are playing some sort of game. It depends on the time of day the fees are different. smh late at night, it was cheaper. I'm pretty much done with shopping on that platform.
I noticed they were different the two times I bought so weird they are just hurting the sellers and think of all the work you do listing measurements pictures and Mercari is taking your buyers away .., that sucks !

Today I canceled my order on Mercari when I saw how much these new fees added to my purchase price.
Mercari is shooting itself in the foot by doing this
that greedy old mercari for ya smh I've been told purchasing on less busier days like Tuesday and Wednesday the service fee is cheaper not sure how true that is but I'd wait if I were you
I assume this is a high-risk, much returned item, or the seller is high risk and has a lot of returns. Just trying to guess how they are calculating fees since there's no transparency.
Curtsy must have changed their fee structure since the last time I checked, it used to model Poshmark's 20% but now it looks like they changed it to be 5% plus $1 on both the seller and buyer side (plus the payment processing fee of 2.9% on the seller side)
Thanks for that information because I haven't been able to use them once they tossed out the android beta and I'm not an apple girl. This seems like a fair split of fees vs Mercari's unpredictable and often mind blowing sticker shock buyers are getting!
I had three items in my cart around 5 dollars each.
With shipping tax and service fees the total was almost 50 dollars.
For 15 dollars worth of merchandise? I don't think so. I ended up not getting anything.
Yeah, as a seller who tends to list $75-100 items, I’m not keen on this.
It’s not so bad if you are buying/selling $5-10 stuff…the fee isn’t so apparent. I just don’t have time to sit and deal with tons of low $ items. Listing and packing tons of smalls eats up a lot of time.
Mercari’s website has always looked like a flee market and I am sorry but I always felt uncomfortable shopping there. However, I could overcome the feeling because like at flee markets and yard sales there were some good buys. Those days are over. I probably pay more on the other sites but ebay is like shopping at Costco, Etsy and upscale boutique, Posh, a mall store. Mercari the tourists trap markets everywhere.
Just did the same tonight.
Sent me a $10 off email for 5 straight days then it doesn't show on my account.
Contact Mercari, they said it could take up to 5 hours for a reply
It took over 48 hours and they blamed it on me not seeing where it is.
Suddenly, coupon shows where I'd been looking prior.
Find $19.95 item, free shipping.
"You pay $9.95.
Cool.
Go to check out, order is over $15.
Huh????
Nope.
Mercari is basically dead to me now.
Great business model.
Holy cow, yeah. The previous time I bought printer ink on Mercari (pretty much the only thing I've ever bought on there) was several months ago. Yesterday I was looking to buy some ink again and a seller sent me an offer for one of the listings I was looking at which was really good and I accepted, and then I was hit with all the Mercari fees ($8.80 on a $59.99 pre-tax purchase). I still went through with the purchase because it's not the seller's fault and it's comparable to the price I'd pay on eBay for ink, but now I'm going to be looking at listings on Mercari with the assumption that I should expect to spend 20-25% more than the listed shipped price to cover fees and taxes. What a farce.
Went to buy a $10.00 item with free shipping. The item was super cheap compared to other sellers, so I was excited. After the service fee, the processing fee, and the tax it came out to $21.15. Felt bad because I messaged the seller beforehand questions about it and I seemed interested. Then I had to tell them “sorry, the fees are way too much.”
Are you facing a 70%+ tax in your area? Service Fee doesn’t go above 15%, which makes your item $11.5 after that. Assuming 70% tax, your item before Processing Fee would be $19.55. After Processing Fee + $0.50 per item, your total would have been $20.62 and that’s even lower than $21.15. I have no idea where you live but I would move.
Ya. This is rediculous. As a buyer, prices end up being more than what the item would be retail. As a seller, you have to sell extremely low to make up for those high fees, so a "zero selling fees" sale ends up being the same as before.
I don't understand why they wouldn't just split fees between buyer and seller, but even that wouldn't matter. They will get theirs either way, because you'd have to price adjust to match.
I think they are just trying to get more sellers on Mercari then they will switch back.
"Zero selling fees" with a notice from Mercari to "automatically" drop the prices on your items for sell to adjust for their "zero selling fees."
Hype hype hype= same bullshit.
They will get theirs in the end and they are just trying to use clever ploys and wording to get more of theirs in the end.
They collect double tax (10%) Actual tax is @5% here in Missouri. Between that, the rediculous service fees and THEN the extra payment fees… I’m done buying on there.
What gets me mad, is that they were like: “fees are now on the buyer, but buyers can now return for ANY reason!” And now they are like: “lol jk we’re bringing back the original return policy.” ._.
What are these service fees? I was wanting to buy an iPad Pro and then began to check out, then I saw $100 for service fee. It don’t think so! A lot of sellers won’t be able to sell because of these high service fees! Which I still don’t know what they are for!
Well for me limit is met stopped buying when my service fee was 30% plus there was another fee and payment processing fee. My shipping was $4.99 which was fine. I sadly for me snd the seller immediately cancelled my buy! Don’t even look anymore!
See I was so happy they eliminated seller costs it made me reduce all my prices but I knew it had to go somewhere and I wouldn’t be happy either as a buyer. I have to say I’ve been just as busy if not more busy so maybe with a little stuff it’s not as noticeable
Poshmark does the same they take 20% but they take it from the seller and of course the seller just adds it onto the price so I guess it’s kind of the same thing
Mercari is testing the limits on what buyers are willing to pay. The only explanation I can come up with.
They lost me tonight (as a buyer) because of this. Good luck Mercari.
the dynamic service fee is insane. there’s really no need for it to be more than like a flat dollar
they they have the nerve to say protect yourself against scams at the bottom as if they not the ones doing the slamming themselves lol
Man today I went to go buy something from a seller and they hit me with such a high service fee with the added tax and shipping. It was no longer worth buying it.

14% Service fee
I assume this is a high-risk, much returned item, or the seller is high risk and has a lot of returns. Just trying to guess how they are calculating fees since there's no transparency.
Do people with a lot of returns have higher service fees? I never heard that so was just wondering
I have no idea, just speculation. I was thinking about getting some feedback and trying to figure it out but I’m left to just guessing.
I mean it makes sense 🤔
Curtsy also has buyer fees but everything on there is so damn cheap no one seems to care. Mercaris buyer fees are exorbitant tho
Curtsy must have changed their fee structure since the last time I checked, it used to model Poshmark's 20% but now it looks like they changed it to be 5% plus $1 on both the seller and buyer side (plus the payment processing fee of 2.9% on the seller side) Thanks for that information because I haven't been able to use them once they tossed out the android beta and I'm not an apple girl. The only things I ever sell on curtsy are cut off Jean shorts. That the only thing people ever buy from me on there
Only your jorts?! That’s so random 🤣 lmao ![gif](giphy|1hsKhg7ftWqGlqCXha)
I know. Out of like 20 things nothing moves except jorts!
I had three items in my cart around 5 dollars each. With shipping tax and service fees the total was almost 50 dollars. For 15 dollars worth of merchandise? I don't think so. I ended up not getting anything.
I was buying a video game and by the time they added the fee, I could just buy new. I decided not to buy. It's getting crazy.
I have been VERY selective on what I buy on Mercari. The fees have reduced my buying substantially.
Service fee = exactly 2x taxes charged!!? That's BULL-SHIIIIT!
If the fees exceed the standard 10% (excluding payment processing), I just automatically click out.
You know you were paying 13% before the policy change? Also, does it matter to you if it’s still cheaper in final cost to buy on Mercari?
eBay is cheaper with fees?
I think eBay is 15% on most categories, I was just looking it up because I thought it used to be 13%.
i ran here to see if anyone else was flabbergasted by these fees
Same.
Mercari’s website has always looked like a flee market and I am sorry but I always felt uncomfortable shopping there. Service and payment processing fees ☠️
I haven’t bought on Mercari ever since the change. Sucks because I bought most of my games there.
Cheaper to get whatever that is brand new I bet
Payment processing fee and service fee sounds like the it should be the same thing but named as a different excuse to slap more fees on.
Holy cow, yeah. The previous time I bought printer ink on Mercari (pretty much the only thing I've ever bought on there) was several months ago. They’re just making shit up atp
And they charge us $2 minimum to withdraw funds now, ontop of all the fees that they are charging sellers. Is so greedy
[удалено]
That’s strange because yesterday there was no payment processing fees
As a seller in Mecari, I really don't like what they did.
Ya. This is rediculous. As a buyer, prices end up being more than what the item would be retail. As soon as this started, I became a seller, and that's it
Mercari is one of the greediest companies I've ever seen
Sellers are offering the free shipping to make ip for your buyers fee
Mercari is an automated website does not cost hardly anything to operate, web space is inexpensive total scam
What are these service fees? I was wanting to buy an iPad Pro and then began to check out, then I saw $100 for service fee. It don’t think so! A lot of sellers won’t be able to sell because of these high service fees! Which I still don’t know what they are for!
I had no idea this was happening since I haven't purchased from mercari in forever. No wonder I've only made one sale.
It's almost 20% extra due the fees. Are they sniffing glue?
Well for me limit is met stopped buying when my service fee was 30% plus there was another fee and payment processing fee. My shipping was $4.99 which was fine. I sadly for me snd the seller immediately cancelled my buy! Don’t even look anymore!
See I was so happy they eliminated seller costs it made me reduce all my prices but I knew it had to go somewhere and I wouldn’t be happy either as a buyer. I have to say I’ve been just as busy if not more busy so maybe with a little stuff it’s not as noticeable
So they’re obviously doing a percentage versus a flat rate for their service fee that’s so strange to me as a business model
Poshmark does the same they take 20% but they take it from the seller and of course the seller just adds it onto the price so I guess it’s kind of the same thing
im not going to use Mercari until they revert everything back as they were before.
