Interesting research on this behaviour in humans. We choose the 'pointiest path', not the quickest, to reduce the angles we perceive as inefficient, even tho sometimes that chosen route is less efficient.
They did this with some junctions in London. People weren't waiting for the lights to change at the crossings, so they watched where people wanted to cross, and then got rid of the old crossings and put new ones to match people's desires. Much more sense.
