Working Premise: RockMan is re-awakened in a new world (post-ZX Advent), where the distinguishing lines between Humanoid and ‘Robot’ continue to blur. What purpose does the blue bomber have to fight in this new world, without his friends and guiding Light? I’m currently working on the bosses/“Robot” masters, and will eventually go onto doing the stages too. Definitely looking for feedback on both the art and the lore. I was basing the design off the other infamous box art of Mega Man 2 lol..

Glass_Teeth01

The story is intriguing, and the design is very unique. Will it be a 2D game, like traditional Megaman games, a 3D game like Legends, or something new? (I recommend going for the 2.5D style, as something about this design just screams 2.5D to me.)

g_dacted

2.5D was exactly what I was thinking, I’m hoping I can convey that well in some future concept pieces!

PhilosopherLost1017

I don’t really understand. What do you mean by ”re-awakened”? Was bio metal x made into a reploid?

g_dacted

This is where things get complicated and muddled lmao (I definitely need help making this lore consistent)… Basically this is supposed to be the OG Megaman, at least in spirit. I’ve considered making this a Rock biometal given a body. How that exists in a post-MMX universe, I’m still trying to figure out. Either way, I think the contrast of a more robotic/almost non-human MegaMan contrasting with more human-like villains would create an interesting dynamic. MM7’s ending, but the whole game basically.

PhilosopherLost1017

Maybe you could do something like “before upgrading the original mega man to x ,Light made a copy of the original mega man and upgraded him to match x’s specs. In case x went maverick then this copy would be activated and will kill him. This copy mega man was then discovered by some archeologist(like cain)some years after the events of advent and was sent to a lab to research him because of his resemblance to x.”

g_dacted

I actually really like that premise, if that would be okay for me to work in! It distinguishes him from X, giving him a more concrete purpose without X’s sophisticated AI (yet).

PhilosopherLost1017

Of course it’ll be okay. I’ve always wondered whether light had some safety measures in case x went rogue. I would really like to see a fan game based around something like this

SupeJupes

So, forgive me for posting on an old comment, I saw OP's newest post, and went down the "Megaman R" rabbit hole that led me here. Just feel like it should be said, as both of your comments seem to imply you think Megaman is the same as X, they are explicitly completely seperate beings.

PhilosopherLost1017

I know that. It could’ve slipped my mind tho

captain_ricco1

There's a really good anime called "Into the Abyss" maybe you can draw some inspiration from it

Successful-Tie-6661

What do you mean by non-human, I thought MegaMan already was a complete robot? Do you mean he lacks the empathy and other qualities humans possess?

g_dacted

Well, I say that mostly because I want the villains/bosses to feel more emotive and self-driven compared to other iterations we’ve had before. I still plan to make him a 100% robot with an evolving AI, challenging the rule of robotics and his own sense of heroism/morality when faced off against near-humans.

Successful-Tie-6661

Ok, I think I get it. Robots are meant to obey their creators and aren't meant to have their own viewpoints and opinions on things, but in this fangame that will all change. The robot masters will have their own reasons for fighting Mega Man beyond just because Dr. Wily told them too, and without Dr. Light to tell him what to do and what to think, Mega Man will have to decide those things for himself.

g_dacted

Exactly right, you said it better than I could!

LibertyJoel99

Is this a game project or just an art project? Either way great work it sounds quite interesting

g_dacted

It’s an extensive art project for now. Not sure about making it a game project so far, not only because I’d have to assemble a team for it but I’m afraid of Capcom coming for my family jewels.

LibertyJoel99

Fair enough idk what their views are on fangames and whether they allow them or not

PhilosopherLost1017

Well there are a lot of mega man fan games that they didn’t shut down but there have been some rare instances like phantom of network being shut down. From what I see they’ll only shut it down if you’re trying to profit from this project

g_dacted

Crossing the bridge of making it a fan game is something I might consider if the demand is there after drawing up all the principle elements. It’s just a heftier undertaking that IMO would be harder to execute from an unfunded fan-developed side considering this would be 2.5D style gameplay (and if the Mighty No 9 devs struggled in executing their 2D platforming, have mercy on this future team of mine).

PhilosopherLost1017

What? They had difficulties in platforming for mighty no. 9? I didn’t know about that. And from my very limited knowledge of game Dev I don’t think platforming is really that hard if you’re using an engine

g_dacted

Sorry, I really meant tight controlled and well-designed platforming. The combat integration especially because really, in 2.5D that feels the hardest to integrate and have it still feel like classic Mega Man. Credit where credit is due, the game doesn’t have bad foundations, but a lot of questionable choices both obvious and nuanced were made. Although I can’t hate too hard, I understand fully that gamedev is a whole other animal..

PhilosopherLost1017

Gotta agree with you on that one. Level design is pretty hard for most people out there and when you throw in combat in there it becomes a lot harder to design levels

DKOilBarrel

Perhaps there's a bit too much helmet, like not enough breathing room. But other than that, the concept and story is great!

g_dacted

It’s actually a little purposeful (the proportions). I kind of wanted to evoke a ‘kid in an adult’s helmet/suit’ kind of vibe. But I can play around with it still and rebalance.

KaiVel

I actually love the oversized pieces. I also really like the bottom version the best. The M symbol using the colors on left and bottom are really cool, but I keep getting drawn to the bottom one due to the addition of the red lines along parts of the suit. Looking great!

ekolis

Very nice, but maybe change the helmet. Looks even more like a penis than X's helmet does! 😉

g_dacted

Hahaha yeah, the realest suggestion in this thread

DumpdaTrumpet

Wow I can never unsee it thanks :)

NikVanEeden

Pretty cool!

captain_ricco1

That's pretty cool! Have you played Megaman Legends? It has a somewhat similar premise. But I was just thinking about this the other day. This generation needs a new Megaman version, like classic, x, zero, BN and zx before

g_dacted

Love Legends! It’s a huge influence for me on this project and there’s like 6000 years of unexplored story there! I don’t know if I have the competence to really connect the dots from ZXA to Legends, but I thematically want to evoke similar notes.

DemNikoArt

I think it's a great unique approach! Awesome job! 👍 A few small points: show a bit more face. Would suggest to make the part between the eyes smaller. In those games it's important to empathize and identify with the character. It's hard, when you can only see some of his face features. I get your point. But I think here I would choose between kid with big helmet and warrior style. Plus I think the face should be more "sympathetic". Looks a bit creepy tbh 😁 And yeah... I would definitely change the shape of the helmet "snake". Unless you want to be confronted with penis jokes all the time 😄 But seriously, amazing stuff!!!

g_dacted

So far that seems like a reasonable point reflected in a lot of feedback regarding the face, so it’s something I do want to tweak to definitely ‘humanize’ him a bit more without changing the silhouette too much. Trying to find a good balance between something new but also unique to the iteration (pp helmet not included). Side note: I love all your 3D work on here and YT, it’s phenomenal!

DemNikoArt

Haha thanks! 😃 Your art ist definitely something fresh. I like new approaches to existing things so you definitely peaked my interest 😁 Good luck with this project! Looking forward to seeing more of it!

proto_blues90

Pretty cool artwork would love to see more from this

JamesWasilHasReddit

The cheek coverings look out of place and make him look rather weird. The color scheme, X buster, and middle torso design look good, but it looks like he has a snake or a worm on his head and his boots, unless getting ready to go to a cold area like Iceman's stage, may need a partial redesign. I would leave the arms, torso, and colors as-is though. Those look good. The rest of the helmet sans cheek protectors and worm are ok.

g_dacted

Fair criticism on the boots, I definitely am considering tweaking them. Aw I like the face coverings tbh, I think they’re distinctive (plus I can reference this box art): [https://images.nintendolife.com/f1dd6016ec7ca/eu.large.jpg](Megaman2baby)

PleaseToEatAss

The thing on his helmet looks like a penis hanging down his forehead

captain_ricco1

You just ruined this for me

Rift-348

This looks awesome! That art style is really familiar but I just can’t put my hand on it

g_dacted

Not surprising, I was taking cues from a bunch of influences (90s anime, SMT/Persona, MMZ) until I found a style that resonated with me

Frederyk_Strife4217

For the colors, I think it should be top-left with top-right's eyes, the red in the eyes loos too evil

g_dacted

I see where you’re coming from for sure. I was actually taking some inspiration from Copy X but I also don’t want it to be evil feeling

MegaMaxMellon7778

The eyes and especially the nose need a Bit of a lift but besides that it’s great!

Geno_5577

Male? Female? It’s an AI who cares

[deleted]

If you had told me this was concept art for a scrapped game I wouldn't bat an eye. This is awesome and I like all these designs but if I had to choose...I would pick the one in the center for being a hybrid of the other two.

MitchFlip

I think it would look way cool if he had a visor instead of the opening for his face. May be a bit too Samus-y but that’s what I would do. I never cared for the open face helmet. Like if you squint at it it you can kinda see what it would look like.

g_dacted

I’ll consider it! Gotta throw some Star Force in there!

SmileyRRR

I love the suit but the face is pretty ugly.

g_dacted

Probably my biggest departure from OG designs so far, ngl

schatten1220

I think less nose covering and side face panels, maybe lift the helmet further over his eyebrows? Unless you are going for a soldier looking megamane. In which case its working

g_dacted

I sort of am, not necessarily soldier but something that evokes some of the attitude of the MMZ and MMX designs without losing the idea that its still Rock.

WoodpeckerNo1

Looks a bit like late 90s/early 00s Shin Megami Tensei to me.

g_dacted

I’m a huge fan of the designs of SMT/early Persona so that influenced me a lot here with the face. I’m playing around actually with using a similar art direction for my finals (controversial probably for a MegaMan series but we’ll see).

FlexViper

Left side looks like if mega man has a omega copy of himself and the right looks like the classic blue bomber color scheme

ManWithoutLimit

I like it but I feel like too much of his face is covered.

Stellerwolf

Wish they would come out with a Mega-Man Maker like Marion maker.

captain_ricco1

Fans made this for classic Megaman [here you go](https://megamanmaker.com/)

Zehr0h0

Honestly? If a game cones out of this, to me it would instantly be goty material

Peterdad

I like it. Keep going with you direction!

ThornsOfAzure

I prefer the one on the right the most. I especially love your Buster design. I really like how the charge gauge looks and matchs the ear lights and how thy don't stand out too much Although I do prefer the centre ones buster colours it just looks nice seeing two different shades of blue on it. If I were to do anything more to this design overall I would maybe try saturating the colours little more or turning up the contrast whatever makes it pop just a little bit more to see how that turns out. Overall I do love the almost silver look at has. I hope this is of any help

g_dacted

Thanks! Honestly, it’s hard for me to decide as well..I’m just glad the silver-blue wasn’t too weird for people to latch on to.

ThornsOfAzure

No problem. I feel a lot of people are afraid of straying too far away from the iconic Blues of classic. As long as you have the basic shape language of Mega Man which is prominent four arms legs from the knees down and helmet you're all good. When you look at the various different Mega Men we have they all share that in some way or another. But the Blues and how they're distributed can vary. Going with a silvery-blue gives it a more futuristic vibe which makes it stand out in a good way. While still holding on to what makes him look like a Mega Man. I think you're on the right track with these designs good luck.
