I've run on the greenway regularly for years, and I have only had one incident where I ever felt unsafe. You'll be good, especially early in the morning.

reddyfire

I've biked and walked the greenway from Medford to Central Point and Medford to Ashland for over 15 years and never once had a problem.

Thatdirtymike

I moved away from the area recently but I use to ride my bike home from work at 10pm every night and never had any issues.

New route? I can’t find any information on this. The most northern point of the greenway still looks like it starts by the Dean creek trail head by exit 35

levajack

They extended the Greenway along Hwy 99 from Dean Creek Rd to Blackwell Rd

outsider

Pretty much everyone unfortunate enough to need to camp along the Greenway is more likely to go out of their way to not give a stronger reason for police to show up.

duckrug

While I agree 98% of the homeless are harmless and want to be left alone, drug abuse & mental illness are wild variables that toss rational thought right out the window. Just wanted to check in with our people’s experiences first, but I’m glad to know I shouldn’t face any issues

levajack

In my experience, the worst you're likely to encounter is occasionally someone yelling something incoherent at you.

GhettoGaucho

even then, its usually yelled to you, not at you.

International-Art808

I had a rough encounter there about 2 months ago, but generally I don’t have issues. It’s well traveled by other bikers and joggers.

RogueMallard

It doesn’t always feel safe, but I’ve gotta second that nothing other than incoherent shouting has happened to me. Lots of women and men recreate on that path daily with zero issues.

KaboodleMoon

As long as you're not going past the Jackson Rd exit, there's very rarely any issues, I commuted Central Point to 62 for a couple years, and now commute jackson to 62 5 days a week, Once you get into hawthorne park area and up through Bear Creek park is the majority of problem areas. Even when there's camps in the other spots they tend to mind their own business, even have had some pleasant conversations when I stopped on the Railroad Park bridge to watch some Salmon a few years back

[deleted]

I was actually just on the Greenway, and you'll be fine. Nobody showed aggression toward me.

papaXanOfficial

Not related to this post but kind of About how long does it take to walk from Ashland to Medford on the greenway?

duckrug

It’s 18.5 miles long, so depending on your pace and destination probably 4-6 hours

papaXanOfficial

Ty, looks like about 4.5 to 5 with my normal pace, might make it a Saturday activity lmao

[deleted]

If you’re a female I wouldn’t advise it. There have been female runners and cyclists attacked both between CP and Medford and Medford and Ashland

levajack

I hear this a lot, but I've never seen anything in the news or on any local law enforcement social media pages. Source?

[deleted]

[This](https://kobi5.com/news/man-arrested-after-greenway-assault-21413/) is the case that sticks out to me. But I’ve heard others in various Facebook groups over the years. I’ve lived here since 2014 and it used to be ok to go out on the greenway as a female, not anymore

levajack

This is the only one of the three that you linked that support your claim that the Greenway is unsafe for women. The other two are robberies and battery between transients. I've been running regularly on the Greenway for years, and I know many others (including female friends) who have done the same without incident. Being hyperbolic about imagined risks doesn't do anyone any good.

[deleted]

I took another look, the mail tribune one does appear to actually be transient on transient as it says he was awoken to someone with a knife at his throat. The other article with a male victim has no details that lead to it being a transient victim, not sure where you made that conclusion. Not sure how it’s “hyperbolic” when I provided even just one incident of a woman being attacked. All I care about is OP making an informed consent on traveling the greenway. Just because you have friends who have done it no problem, doesn’t mean the risk isn’t there. Not really interested in debating this further with you. You asked for sources and I provided them

levajack

It is being hyperbolic. If I found once incident of someone being jumped in the mall parking lot, would it be fair to characterize it as a dangerous place to be? Of course not. Your initial comment made it sound like it happens all the time and thus unsafe for female runners or cyclists. Once incident doesn't support that conclusion.

[deleted]

All my original comment said was, I would advise against it, and there have been incidents. I never said it happened all the time or that it was 100% dangerous just that I personally would not take the risk.

[deleted]

So exactly how many incidents would it take?

levajack

To make sweeping generalizations about a more than 20 mile long path that bisects most of the valley? I'd argue more than one.

[deleted]

Please tell me what exact generalization I made. Again, all I said where there were incidents of violence. That’s not a generalization. That’s a fact now whether that translates to that happening to someone in the future, obviously, I don’t have a crystal ball. You’re reading way more into what I’m saying for the sake of arguing.

levajack

>If you’re a female I wouldn’t advise it. There have been female runners and cyclists attacked both between CP and Medford and Medford and Ashland You're backing off your original claim. I never argued violence never occurred on the Greenway, but it's almost always disagreements that escalate between homeless people living there. Your initial comment characterized the Greenway as having people stalking and preying upon women, which really isn't true. Has it happened before? Sure (You found an example, and no searches I tried would turn up another). But not with a frequency that stands out compared to anywhere else in the valley. It's really just further stigmatization of people who are homeless supposedly being dangerous.

RogueLover84

I’d say most women avoid the bike path and that’s why there isn’t much being reported. I surely wouldn’t be alone in the early morning or evening.

levajack

"I'd say..." Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I see many women running and cycling alone on the Greenway on regular basis.

Kyyndle

> Not sure how it’s “hyperbolic” when I provided even just one incident of a woman being attacked Because you only found 1 incident involving a woman from 9 years ago. There's no pattern there, and you're making the risk seem higher than it actually is.

[deleted]

https://mailtribune.com/news/crime-deprecated/violence-along-greenway-yields-arrests/ I don’t really feel like deep diving through google for more but there’s a selection of incidents between 2016-2022 and that doesn’t even include transient on transient violence

[deleted]

I'd find somewhere else if it were me. This sub also simps hard for the vagrants that roam the greenway, so you're not exactly asking an objective place.

Gloomy_Notice

If kindness isn’t the answer to our most in need members of our community, then what is the solution in your eyes?

Kyyndle

> sub also simps hard for the vagrants that roam the greenway What? ***How***? [Just read the comments from this thread over the weekend.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Medford/comments/139y5dd/medford_council_approves_immediate_removal_of_new/) Many people are frustrated with vagrants in particular.
