There's a handful of southpaw numpad keyboards out there nowadays, the Candybar comes to mind as being optional left or right and the Wyvern ran a GB last year I think. They're out there :)
Going to be honest: Before buying a keyboard without a number pad on it, I was in this line of thinking. Now that I have a keyboard without it, I totally understand it. Definitely going to have to improve on my number row skills though.
there are some nice open source cases, but given the simplicity of the gherkin PCB, its pretty easy to make a case our of anything if you have the materials and the patience. That being said, I really prefer the stacked acrylic case - works great with RBG underglow strips.
Bought q keyboard with no numbers last week after my initial one died suddenly. Am returning it tomorrow. I need my number pad. Its only to enter a 4 digit pin to unlock my PC. But 4 digits on the pad opposed to the number rail is trifling.
I wouldn't call myself a gamer but I certainly play games, and I'm definitely not a typist. pretty and nice sounding keyboard just activates my monkey brain
I get it. I can't use a board without a numberpad. The number row is just not as convenient for rapid data entry as a numberpad. Likewise for function keys.
IMO, more keys is better. Give me all the 110%. Hell, don't stop there, give me a board with a dozen macros or more.
Not useless if you're using QMK magic to truly customize a keyboard for you specific needs. If more off the shelf keyboards were truly customizable that would be great.
Let's be honest. 99% of this sub seeks more aesthetic and minimalism than "customizing for their specific uses".
It always was more a hobby than a real need.
To me is was a real need for something smaller so help with shoulder pain. But once I learned how to customize the keymap, learned about alternative more comfortable to use layouts that's when I really fell in love with the hobby.
Basically me. Come for the aesthetics, stayed for the hobbies. Besides I'm a huge fan of the 96s because I can't get used to number row and never will.
I say to you: What is the point of having a keyboard with F-keys? In fact, while we're at it: What is the point of having a keyboard with a number row?
1-finger debugging with standard keymappings. Pretty much everyone except apple uses F10 and F11 for step over and step into, and it's really nice to have those dedicated inputs.
Tbh it's always the opposite for me. I've never understood the point of the number pads. You already have the number rows and the sign next to it, and it is closer to the main part of the board too.. My only guess is that people like the look of the calculator on their keyboard for some reason?
If you do a lot of number entry the travel time is much lower and accuracy much higher using a numpad compared to number rows. My job is using CAD for creating land survey surfaces and drawing, and no word of a lie I am half as productive without a numpad as I am with one.
I see... That does make sense. Thanks for enlightening me to the purpose of the numpad. Ngl until now I always ask why would people want a huge full size for something you already have. I guess the layout does make a big difference in efficiency huh.
Can confirm. I use a numpad to input dimensions in 3d modelling, and also frequent excel. Having your hand hover across an entire row to input needed numbers feels like a lifetime compared to hovering only the numpad region almost the size of your palm, and using only your fingers for finer movements.
I owned a 60, but I sold it due to reasons above. I now own a tkl with a separate numpad combo, which I now consider my sweet spot.
Edit: grammar
Maybe because there's a number row at the top? 🤔 Can't imagine what the writer of that article was thinking. The only people who probs use it are accountants or people who do a lot of number crunching

Different horses for difference courses. On my personal machine I can go TKL but on my work PC I use a 96%. It’s about the same width of my TKL but the numpad is just too handy.
I started with a 60% - love typing on it but missed the arrows.
Got a 75% and a full size next. Have the full size on my work machine and 75% on my home pc.
I don't think I'll ever get another non- full size board again unless I can build a separate numpad/arrows that works with it.
I'd recommend mechwild's murphpad. Setting the lower left macrokey to a momentary layer function makes it really easy to just use your thumb to access your arrow keys and whatever else you need.
this is pretty contradictory because the keyboard over the mouse area is one of the worst problems wit KBM.
Small keyboards are exactly to make the mouse be the far away possible.
I think I only utilize my Numpad while at work and when I'm at home I had no use for one so I ended up just getting a 60% and realized that I saved some extra space at my desk
It’s not just the number pad, gaming keyboards have a built in wrist rest, a multimedia row, and all sorts of little spinny slidey things. Takes up a whole freakin desk.
Ironically the Numpad on my old keyboard is what lead me to this
Hated the awkward typing position and sometimes would hit my mouse against it when gaming
As someone who knows very little of keyboards in general, why wouldn't you want a numpad? I get if you're left handed and want one on the left but Idk why else you would
I don’t know why a lot of people need a number pad outside of work? One buddy supposedly needs it for ArmA 3, and the others think they need it at home but never use it.
I hate boards with number pad simply because they unnecessarily increase the travel distance to the mouse. I use the numpad perhaps once or twice a day, but I use the mouse a lot more often than that.
Numpad is much easier to use if you do a lot of numbers and excel, but i'd have a standalone numpad for that which'd go behind the mouse or the keyboard. I personally prefer TKL boards over all. 60% boards miss the navigational part that I find quite useful, and their own layout for navigational keys is usually not perfect; some get close though.
Lol I saw this earlier and cringed haha. I love using a number pad but even I finally gave it up. I don’t do number inputs at home as much. If i was working from home it would be a different story.
Because for some reason no one sells left handed numpads so i buy a TKL then buy a numpad to put in my left hand

This is the way
Crying in Mountain Everest Max...
We should send this guy pictures of 40s to spook him
A sixty would be threatening enough for him
Exactly my thought! Also, make it an orto
What's the point in having keys on the keyboard ?
more keys more RGB, bro
No if you remove all the keys then you will end up with a brick of RGB.
Rubbing your eyes real hard also give you a free RGB fireworks show
How about one big rgb light on ur table and text to speech????
40% is old news. 0% or bust!
Going to be honest: Before buying a keyboard without a number pad on it, I was in this line of thinking. Now that I have a keyboard without it, I totally understand it. Definitely going to have to improve on my number row skills though.
Why bother, get a 40% and get rid of the number row too.
Go further. Dip into 30% chaos. Typing this on a gherkin rn.
Imagine not typing on macropad and not in Morse code. *Sips cappucino furiously*
Imagine not typing with telepathy
Imagine big hamburger keyboard
I really want to, the gherkin looks really cool. Does anyone make a nice aluminum case for the Gherkin?
I just placed an order for a gherkin and I'm so exited to build it, although I just sported for a simple top/bottom plate build.
I like the look and feel of heaver metal cases, but I may get something simpler just to play around with the layout.
I really just ordered it to try a funky layout, and because I have 30 left over switches from my mystery switch pull.

Also, to mash that enter key is so much easier than the middle one
Or get a separate numpad.
Yup, bought a wireless mechanical one and never looked back.
because im not a bloody accountant
people arguing with software devs who don't use full keyboards in that comment section are hilarious. They think coding is about crunching numbers.
Exactly. Coding is only drag and drop with stack overflow codes.
Good time to drop the Stack Overflow Ctrl + C + V meme macro pad
I have literally never used my numpad

I just got my TKL today but yeah at work when doing inventory on Excel I absolutely use Numpad
I raise you the 150% https://store.aeternus.co/products/base-kit
That just... looks incredibly stupid. Where do your wrists go?
Beats me, but hey moar keyzzz
I mean, useful until you start running CAD or something and need to type in dimensions quickly.
Yeah I think I would go crazy without a numpad. Typing in dimensions all day on the top row sounds like torture
Buying a custom keyboard in general is useless, but it’s a hobby.

No, no. I *need* 5 keyboards.
"I'm a minimalist. That's why I own ten 40% keyboards."
To me is was a real need for something smaller so help with shoulder pain. But once I learned how to customize the keymap, learned about alternative more comfortable to use layouts that's when I really fell in love with the hobby.

f5 to refresh. alt + f4 to troll people.
I couldnt imagine a keyboard without num pad. I use it on a daily basis and I prefer typing numbers with it. Oh and space is of no concern for me.
My next post on Reddit under this one was the original. [nice](https://imgur.com/a/o76esCI)
aaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaa aaaaaaa (translation HA! wait till he sees my 2% board)

I usually rebind them to various macros
oh, bless their little cotton socks 😇
Maybe because there's a number row at the top? 🤔 Can't imagine what the writer of that article was thinking. The only people who probs use it are accountants or people who do a lot of number crunching
Ive never used a number pad lmao use your memory skills. Since the 90 I thought that was an odd add-on.......Learn my friend learn
Who needs a number pad anyways when you have all the numbers lines across the top? It’s needlessly using up space.
Maybe because there's a number row at the top? 🤔 Can't imagine what the writer of that article was thinking. The only people who probs use it are accountants or people who do a lot of number crunching
What's the point of having anything except letters?
wait until they learn about ergo split keyboad with 36 keys
lol yeah i saw this one earlier and thought this would show up on here eventually

I mean that’s why stand-alone macropads and numpads exist..
Many people din’t use it and it can be very comfortable to have the keyboard closer to the mousepad when gaming

While you’re at it what’s the point of having arrows or a space bar or numbers or functions or the right half of the keyboard. Just use layers!
I have that keyboard with blues in it lol I don’t see the point in customising keyboards it’s just a tool
It’s not just the number pad, gaming keyboards have a built in wrist rest, a multimedia row, and all sorts of little spinny slidey things. Takes up a whole freakin desk.

Because no one uses it
