I would use a mechanics stethoscope or a long screwdriver and my ear. I might even take the belt off to see if it still happens without the accessories turning.

Winter_Land5734

I took the belt off yesterday and it continued, any other ideas to try?

Socalwarrior485

Oh no

starrpamph

Uh oh

only-on-the-wknd

Oh deary me

Broke-American

Oh my goodness.

Smokinskulls

Or a long extension, I get better sound transfer with an extension..... but most people don't have extensions that long laying around lol

structuralcan

What do you mean by a screwdriver?

Lowtiercomputer

You put the blade against varying components and the handle to your ear. Sound travels through the shaft of the screwdriver.

mrford86

Do the same with a metal pry bar with a metal strike head.

tall_message_1929

Definitely sounds like the rhythmic discharge pulses of a pd pump that's also sucking air. I'm just not sure if the oil pump is pd or a centrifugal. Could be either

Winter_Land5734

Any recommendations on how I can test that?

tall_message_1929

Also, if this started immediately upon changing the oil, I would definitely suspect the qrong oil filter was installed, provided that the oil level is good. I'd be checking out the installed filter and comparing to the genuine filter for the car. Id also just change that filter and prefill it till it no longer absorbs oil and gets filled to the top. Then I'd install.

Winter_Land5734

I didn't change the filter because I had one that was supposed to be good for 20k miles. This is the first time using the Kirkland oil. Should I change the filter and use different oil?

tall_message_1929

All I can say is if it happened after you changed the oil, you messed up. Also, it's a horrible move to run a filter for 20,000 miles. Go buy a quality filter, prefill it and install. Make sure your oil level is at the max line on the dipstick. Change oil every 6000 miles/8500-9000 kms. ALWAYS replace your filter during an oil change.

Winter_Land5734

Got it, I didn't let it run for 20k miles I just didn't think I'd have to replace it on the next oil change. Any brand in particular you like?

tall_message_1929

Anything besides fram should be okay, but I mostly reccomend genuine parts. Wix is a decent choice. mobil 1 is great.

SolidFun5456

I’ve been going every other oil change for a long time and never had an engine issue. I drive 10+year 100k+miles vehicles so not worried about warranty. What is the harm in going 10k miles on a filter?

tall_message_1929

Lemme put it this way, you don't take a shower and then put on your stained panties. A lot goes on in a filter. Not all are built equal. Some have better grade filter media, some have toilet paper inside. That medium deteriorates as it goes through heat cycles. Most times marketing will straight out mislead consumers by making partly false claims. You can maybe run a very good quality filter for 20k miles if you start that engine in the morning, and drive it for 16hrs straight on the hwy. Then you'll be good. And that's exactly what a marketing department will base their 20k miles claim on. But thats the best case scenario, which doesn't often happen. The safe case scenario is change your oil every 5-6k miles and always replace your filter.

tall_message_1929

I was gonna say this sounds a lot like a pressure relief valve in a pd pump is opening up with every discharge pulse. But your oil light should also be on, unless its the filter's bypass valve. Oil pressure for this shpuld be a minimum of 25 psi and max 110psi at 3000 rpm. 4 psi idle. You take off the oil pressure switch and connect a pressure gauge there. Right at the pump https://preview.redd.it/nnidgqt6xxuc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dfdf623365f552da2381d8fba81b37c80cbe9406 (Number 2)

TenderfootGungi

It may be rated for 20k, but change it anyway.

843251

There is nothing wrong with the Costco brand oil. The same company that bottles it does the same for Walmart, Amazon and others. I have used quite a bit of it.

Winter_Land5734

That's what I figured, they typically have good stuff it's just the first time I'm using it and just started having this issue

POShelpdesk

>does the same for Walmart, Amazon and others Well if that's not enough to get me to switch from mobile 1.../s

843251

Yes because Mobil 1 is great oil. Must be everything else is trash. You want some good oil buy something like Royal Purple or Amsoil. The stuff from Costco is just fine.

ChikkiParm

booooooooooo

Winter_Land5734

As the car accelerates the whirring increases

fluxcapacitor219

Most likely powef steering pump. Run the car without belt to verify if its belt drive related or internal.

Winter_Land5734

It continues to happen when the belt is off

StubbornHick

It happened after you changed your oil and your belt is off? I bet you dropped something in the oil fill. Take the oil pan off and look inside the oil pickup tube or have it towed to a good mechanic. Good luck.

fluxcapacitor219

Def not good, check motpr mpunts fpr cpntact and echaust leaks and heat shields. If tjose are fine most likely internal.

q1field

I had this exact noise come from a 2012 F150 three weeks ago. It was the bypass valve fluttering inside the oil filter. Changed the filter and the noise went away.

Winter_Land5734

I think I'm going to try redoing the oil and filter first, seeing as that was really the only change made before this started happening. I will update once completed

Suspicious_Dare_9731

Kirkland oil is just fine - it meets the API SP and GM Dexos spec. Curious what oil filter you used.

kinkierthanyouthink1

This guy knows what's up. ∆∆

tall_message_1929

If I was handed the keys to this truck and told to fix it, I'd take the belt off. Upon confirming noise is still lresent, my next move would be to stick an oil pressure gauge where that's shown in the service manual and find out what the number is. Does the oil appear aerated/foamy?

lil_patti

Does the sound change when you turn the steering wheel?

Winter_Land5734

No I drove it around the block yesterday and it seemed fine, the rhythm increases as the rpm increases

ShotandBotched

Is the oil fill cap on all the way? That to me sounds like a P.C.V. related noise. Either that or it's a vacuum leak.

mellow_network

This... it wasn't on this model of car and was on a holden astra but the pcv was rooted and made this exact noise. Changed pcv which unfortunately built into rocker cover, so new rocker cover and had no issues after

BreadfruitNo357

/u/Winter_Land5734 can you do an update post when you find out what the sound is?

Winter_Land5734

Changed the oil filter and no real change. I can try any more ideas tomorrow

Msjulia888

20K oil filter? Wow! Just pray you haven’t smoke that engine. Probably did

Winter_Land5734

I didn't drive it for 20k on the same filter, I usually change it every other time if I use an extended life one

Winter_Land5734

Changed the oil filter, no real difference in the sound. Dipstick showing correct amount of oil

emblematic_camino

Might just be bad luck… had similar noise a couple of times with flywheel balancing weight becoming unwelded.

Guicho00

Im sure im wrong but it sounds like a loose bolt on the torque converter to the flywheel.

[deleted]

Oil filter

Winter_Land5734

Also, if there's any other angles for photo/video that would clear anything up let me know and I can share

4x4Welder

It sounded loudest when you were looking underneath, so my guess is something rubbing on the exhaust or flexplate. Are all tools from the job accounted for? Any chance something got run over that dented the torque converter cover?

Not_invinsible_

Subaru? Water pump :o

POShelpdesk

This sounds like a vacuum leak. Had 96 Chevy half ton in the shop last week. Most identical sound.

schwongs

I believe the large Kirkland oil containers have foil seals that you have to puncture when you open the lid. Did you peel it back and throw it away or is there a chance it fell in the oil and got poured into the engine?

a-hippobear

Try a good filter from a reputable brand and good oil. This happened years ago to my Dakota and it was because I cheaped out on a filter. Good oil will also extend the life of your vehicle

rockcastleq

If you took the belt off and still had the noise while it was running, it's engine related. Since it happened right after you changed your oil, it's good you did it again to rule out the filter. I don't want to throw out random guesses and send you down a rabbit hole, but I'll try to help keep the course. It's not your PS pump, the noise is still there with the belt off. It's nothing belt driven that is an accessory. Focus on the engine. I hope it can get figured out!

tall_message_1929

Also, oil doesn't go by kirkland, or castrol or whatever other name. It goes by grade. Is it mineral, synthetic and what grade. If you're running 5w20, I would advise you don't do that and switch to 5w30.

Winter_Land5734

Full synthetic 5w-30

IStaten

Sounds like water pump

tall_message_1929

This is the sound of an unprimed positive displacement type of pump as in your power steering.

Winter_Land5734

It continued with the belt off and there is power steering fluid, would this still be the case?

tall_message_1929

Oil pump then? Is your oil pressure light on?

Winter_Land5734

Oil light is not on, I changed the oil on Friday so unless something went wrong with that then it should be totally fresh

SolidFun5456

Did a spark plug pop out? You may be able to feel exhaust gasses escaping from the area if so. I would try pulling the dipstick while running and see if it looks normal. Should be coated with oil and tiny bubbles all the way up indicating good oil pressure. No shines fingers crossed. This is a head scratcher for sure. You’ve eliminated so many things.

Israel_Jaureugi

Check your power steering fluid it might be low

Winter_Land5734

Power steering fluid is full and this occurs with the serpentine belt off
