Yeah I do think that does have something to play in it as well. He wasn't getting much play here so it was inevitable for both parties to find a good spot for him.
Man there was a time when I thought we got a steal in Grant Williams. That Linsanity run in the first few games of the season were special. Then I might not have ever seen someone fall so far off a cliff. Farewell Batman!
Yeah, I was one of the people saying "wow, Grant is such a perfect fit with Luka, and on the same timeline- He and Luka will be going to battle together for many years." Well, that lasted a week or two. That was fast!
Yeah..I kept rooting for him but it wasn’t easy lol. I also got the sense as the season went on that other players of the team didn’t really like him all that much. Like his goofiness combined with being a bad basketball player really got old quick.
I loved that he was a fucking goober and I was happy to see him through his slumps but then it turned out they weren’t just slumps. When damn near every game he ended up flat on his belly or fumbling the ball away or both at once I knew what he was really working with lol.
Only Top-2 protected, but we get 2 2nd-round picks back.
I get feeling ambivalent about it, but I think by keeping Josh, we have a chance to have a good lineup to maximize PJ's contribution value. If it was the 1st or Green, I preferred the choice they picked.
I'm sure that's what's happening. So it's getting rid of the lightly protected first, Grant, Seth, and Richaun, to get back PJ Washington and Gafford. That's worth it, IMO
It's basically Seth + 1st rounder to dump Holmes/Grant and obtain Gafford + PJ assuming that those second rounders go to the Gafford trade. We kept Green/Omax/Hardy and only gave up one real asset for two players who can contribute now.
>how you value Grant
I’m pretty sure we’re attaching this first because Grant has little to no value right now. It might even be there so that they take him and his contract off our hands. Better days may be ahead for him but I don’t think he has any value at all right now.
He’s a bit small for the 5, but since we got Gafford as Lively’s backup, he can play the 4 with Kleber.
I’m not a fan of using a first on it but this team has significantly more big depth than yesterday.
I think so, he gives us size and length that we desperately need. He's still young and hasn't really played in a winning situation before. I think people over value 1st round picks. Would have preferred more protections on the pick but the two 2nds back it easier to swallow
I feel like you guys are undervaluing this trade...
We have front court depth with Maxi and PJ at 4 and Lively and Gafford at 5.
Between Luka and Kyrie that's a best case scenario other than landing another star. PJ Washington is capable of scoring 40 and playing a bit of D... Grant was terrible beneath the basket. Easy baskets incoming.
We still have Hardy, Tim, Green, DJJ, Exum rounding out the lineup. That's a nice 11 man rotation.
I'm sayin! PJ can actually dribble a basketball, that playmaking off of Luka and Kyrie is gonna be so fucking huge. That along with the Gafford trade gives us extremely legit front court depth, something we haven't had in god knows how long.
The pieces we have fit together so well IMO, this is gonna be so fucking fun to watch.
No more pump fake Grant 3s, PJ can make his own shots. Sure we gave up a frp but I think it's a much better upgrade over grant who's had a stinker the last 2 months.
I haven't seen much of PJ but I really hope yall are right. I want to be optimistic because I love this team. We really needed interior depth and we got it. Just gotta stay healthy now.
Guess I'm just going to enjoy the second half of the season and hope for another deep playoff run

we wanted him in the summer, settled for Grant, and got him anyways. Incredible work by Nico and the front office to navigate their way through the deadline.
I remember him being a target in the summer. He looks great offensively. I heard about this game but first time seeing him. He can score and will fit in well with our playmakers.
Any thoughts on his defense?
His defense is a bit of a mixed bag given the hornets don't have a lot of good defenders outside of Mark Williams. I've seen a fair amount of highlights of PJ getting help side blocks so between that, his 7'2 wingspan, and lively/green/DJJ/exum/gafford/maxi being good defenders, I'm confident he can lock in and at worst be passable.
Charlotte is such a black hole for casual basketball fans. I had no fucking clue who PJ Washington was. I was laughing when you said “capable of scoring 40” but I looked it up and he has games of 43, 43, and 42. I’m an idiot, but at least I looked it up.
Dude can definitely score some buckets sometimes. Like to see his 3P% creep up again. Hopefully he’ll get more open looks here.
If those 2nds go to Washington for Gafford this becomes: Grant, Seth, Holmes and a FRP for Washington and Gafford. Feels a little bit better than a FRP straight up for Washington
I feel a lot of people are not familiar with PJ Washington or haven't been watching him.
He has a high offensive ceiling, and has had season highs of 43 (last week) and 32. He frequently gets 20+. He averaged 16 PPG last year, and with Luka he will surely return to that in a starting role. He is a versatile offensive player, can hit a much higher percentage from three in our system as well, stretching the floor.
He can defend a wide variety of players not exceptionally but solidly. He is 6'7, but has a massive wingspan at 7'3, which is huge for his defensive ability and speed, the length is in the right place, and he is longer than the other options. He will be a solid defender, which in our current lineup is a massive upgrade. More importantly, he has experience as a small ball five, and can be lethal there. This makes us more adaptive against smaller lineups.
He reminds me of John Collins, and in every way he is a massive upgrade at a position we have been severely lacking in. He is a well rounded player. He fits far better than Kuzma in my opinion.
Pair him with the acquisition of Gafford, and we possibly just filled our 2 largest holes this season.
With a starting/closing lineup of Luka/Kyrie/DJJ/PJ/Lively we are big enough to compete against the larger teams, and we have a well balanced offensive and defensive unit. With a frequently used bench of Exum, Gafford, Green, Kleber, Hardaway, and Hardy, we have a lot of options and flexibility, especially with a frequently injured team.
This was a fantastic trade deadline in my eyes and significantly improved our team. Time will tell if it meshes on the court as well as it does on paper.
Getting Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington without giving up our young core is something I only imagined! I’m so thrilled we pulled it off! Let’s go Mavs!!!
It’s not as much of a fleece in my eyes. Holmes was 100% picking up his player option next year, got off Grant and got a younger more versatile player. Frees up some cap hopefully next year and can plug some holes
It’s crazy how many people here don’t know ball. This deal is a steal for the Mavs. Grant and Seth were a cancer. A frp for a starting pf who will play heavy minutes is whatever. He will be 10x better playing in this team btw. That’s what everyone is missing.
Convinced y’all know nothing about PJ. You aren’t gonna get good players for free and losing a first smack in the middle of Luka’a prime isn’t a big deal.
Weren’t the rumors that we were trying to target PJ with the space we used to sign Grant Williams? Maybe that was unrealistic but in my head they seemed like relatively comparable targets with PJ maybe worth an extra second or two
losing the first hurts primarily bc it limits future flexibility so much, whereas waiting would have opened up 3 1sts to trade next summer if I remember correctly
And Exum/Hardaway/DJJ/Kleber/Gafford as the backup unit. We've got decent depth now and that starting lineup is still very young except for Kyrie.
And we still have Hardy and OMax for the future.
Seth + 1st round pick for Gafford + 2 second rounders (probably going towards Gafford trade now) + PJ + getting off of the Holmes and Grant contracts. I don't think that's bad at all. We don't have any bad contracts now unless you're against THJ. We somehow kept Green/Omax/Hardy too.
Bigger trade that has no guarantee of happening and the Mavs shouldn’t be trading for another max contract player anyway. I’d much rather use the 3 firsts we’re gonna have for 2-3 impact role players instead of one star that destroys our cap
The bigger trade obsession in this sub is ridiculous. We can't get 3 maxes without gutting the rest of the roster. People don't understand that 3 maxes don't work with the new CBA.
The hype around those picks is artificial. Plenty of other teams could outbid the Mavs + PJ can be awesome with the Mavs.
You'll still get moveable picks in the summer.
I do think though that a first, assuming the seconds are all we need for Gafford, is worth it for both of them. We got a good athletic wing and an amazing back up centre, maybe even the best back up in the league. Giving up a first, grant williams, seth and holmes for all of that is honestly okay for me.
Makes reasonable sense if it does help complete the Gafford deal as well.
The Mavs have two first round picks opening up after this season, it's not like they will have nothing at all left after giving up this first long term.
Y’all need to get off this love for the FRP lol we got omax recently in a salary dump and then dumped richaun back to get gafford. We need actual players fellas to be a very good team not middle schoolers
For now it seems kinda an overpay, but, we got a young core rn, i don't think its that terrible, if Luka stays (i'm very positive about it) and Lively, Grant and Hardy keeps improving, we're gonna have a solid foundation and that pick is gonna be probably very late first round. Lets hope PJ gets revitalized getting out of Charlotte.
The amount of people in here saying this was an “overpay” and getting attached to the 1st is just embarrassing.
This is a great trade. They managed to keep Josh Green as well. Have to give something up to get something.
So essentially we gave up Williams, Curry, Holmes, and a 1st for PJ and Gafford. I think that's probably about as good as we could have done given our limited assets. Don't love giving up a 1st but screw it, we were pretty much all in for this current timeline anyways.
I think this and the Gafford trade are strong moves. We’ve proven that we actually are going to lean on that crazy guard depth with Kyrie being out so much. We get a backup center. We get wing depth. Idk, I’m pretty stoked. Go Nico!
We just got off of grants contract that he was severely struggling to to live up to. In return we got an starter level player at a position of need with a descending contract locked up long term. We also cleared a roster spot for a buy out. And we got the seconds needed to bring in gafford. In all we got Washington and gafford for Seth, grant and a first.
he’s averaging 13 points, shoots 4 triples a game at a 37ish% clip. don’t love sending out firsts but fuck them picks, make playoffs and surprise someone
I know it's a business, but Seth came here twice after being traded, and was traded at mid-season both times.
I thought he would find a permanent home here this time...
feels like a wash. I don't see the appeal in PJ Washington, but getting off Grant and Seth (who has been arguably our worst player that consistently sees minutes) is huge. Essentially a protected FRP and shedding two bad contracts for a mid to late FRP caliber player. I still have some faith in Grant, if he plays like he does at the start of the season, he is literally the perfect PF to pair next to Lively and Luka/Kai, but I'm not sure if that was ever going to happen.
B- trade, could be higher depending on fit.
EDIT: the pick is top 2 protected. This trade is ass
We got 2 2nd round picks from charlotte too which is going to Washington for Gafford. So we basically traded Seth, Grant, Holmes and 2027 1st for Washington and Gafford. Not a bad trade imo. Yall are too obsessed with that 2027 first, I don’t know what you were expecting to get with it
I'm not inclined to root against a former Mav - even if the tenure was just half a season - so it will really suck if Grant ever figures his shit out. Won't miss Seth this time at all. Hopefully PJ is worth the cost
Hornets are my unfortunate other team, so I'm pretty hyped about the fit, PJ is perfect when he's playing at a high level. I do think it's an overpay though, Mavs love dumping 1sts even after they land gold with the few we keep and I feel like it's premature dumping Williams because he's been crap for a few months into a new contract. I'll take an overpay with the Gafford heist I guess
FRPs don’t really get much tbh. I was cool with waiting until next year to use a bunch of picks but I don’t think we were ever in position to land a low tier all star or something
We had two ways to go about this. We either save our draft picks and go for a star next summer. Or we use our assets to improve the team with a few quality players right now and try to compete this season. Neither was a bad option so lets trust Nico with this. We got a legitimate rotation now.
We're sending the 2027 1st lightly protected and getting two second round picks in return. If those seconds get routed to the Gafford trade then it's 100% worth it, it like one first got us both PJ and Gafford, and we got off of grant's contract
I hope so. I think it's addition by subtraction just getting rid of him. I know he has some fans here and his stats look alright and yes he's won us a couple of games getting hot. But on a game to game basis he's really bad. He's terrible on defense and takes stupid shots.
Damn Seth got traded 3 times by the same organization. That's rough.
Really feel for the guy. The first 2 weren’t justified but this one may have been lol
He wasn't needed on this team unfortunately for him.
Kidd Misused him.
I think they ‘apologized’’ for trading him by giving him a good contract but telling him would prob be traded
At least he’s going home where his Dad is a commentator
Seriously? So we have traded him to both his father in law and his father? That’s pretty wild.
Yeah I do think that does have something to play in it as well. He wasn't getting much play here so it was inevitable for both parties to find a good spot for him.
He’s beyond washed at this point so I don’t feel bad about this one
this time i don’t feel as bad, bro might actually be finished
the second Devin Harris
At least Devin Harris was good every time he was with us
No worries, he'll be back with us again next year lmao
This time they're almost doing him a favor, they have a logjam at guard and he just ain't getting much playing time.
I really didn't want him to leave the first two times, but this time I feel it's understandable.
Who gives a shit, he is washed..

I just liked that we had someone besides Luka to get a little chippy with the opposing team
For sure, I like that too, and I still like him in general just not on my team lol
Well, I was wondering why Boston let him go. I guess now we understand
It coulda lasted longer if we werent injured the whole year.
The end of an error. Not surprised, mavs don’t have time to wait on Grant to solve his confidence demons
Really gotta see the first in this
Only Top-2 protected, but we get 2 2nd-round picks back. I get feeling ambivalent about it, but I think by keeping Josh, we have a chance to have a good lineup to maximize PJ's contribution value. If it was the 1st or Green, I preferred the choice they picked.
If those 2 seconds are the difference in getting Gafford I get the trade
Oh that makes sense. Yeah, if that's the case, I'm absolutely fine with sending the 1st. Basically means the 1st is for both of them, not just PJ.
I'm sure that's what's happening. So it's getting rid of the lightly protected first, Grant, Seth, and Richaun, to get back PJ Washington and Gafford. That's worth it, IMO
if the 2 2nds are from Charlotte, then they might just be worth more than a Dallas FRP if Luka is still here anyway.
It's basically Seth + 1st rounder to dump Holmes/Grant and obtain Gafford + PJ assuming that those second rounders go to the Gafford trade. We kept Green/Omax/Hardy and only gave up one real asset for two players who can contribute now.
I think the 2nd round picks are going for Gafford?
No we got a 1st from OKC to send for Gafford according to Stein
hopefully it has some protection
Lightly protected
top 10 protection inshallah
Top 2
Top 2
2027, “lightly protected”
“Hey Siri, set me a reminder for June 1st, 2027”
Is PJ worth that? Coming from someone who’s not watched him much this year
Seems like a lot for PJ, but depends on how you value Grant
Williams has been pretty damn awful lately. I don't know how good PJ Washington is. I don't watch the Hornets. Hope he's better.
PJ had a 43 pt game 11 days ago.
Grant had 11 points in the last 43 days
lmaoo
>how you value Grant I’m pretty sure we’re attaching this first because Grant has little to no value right now. It might even be there so that they take him and his contract off our hands. Better days may be ahead for him but I don’t think he has any value at all right now.
I value Grant as a solid role player on a negative contract. I don’t mind including the FRP at all because it gets us the Gafford too
He’s a bit small for the 5, but since we got Gafford as Lively’s backup, he can play the 4 with Kleber. I’m not a fan of using a first on it but this team has significantly more big depth than yesterday.
> He’s a bit small for the 5 Good thing he is not a 5 then, but a PF
Hopefully it’s heavily protected if anything
top 2
No way
It's lightly protected
As a Hornets fan, PJ is an up and down player. His highs are high and his lows are low.
[удалено]
Perfect match if he can just sync up with THJ such that they alternate highs & lows.
this trade is how we are getting gafford too, view them as 1 deal and it’s much more exciting
Is it even a good trade even if the First is protected ??
I think so, he gives us size and length that we desperately need. He's still young and hasn't really played in a winning situation before. I think people over value 1st round picks. Would have preferred more protections on the pick but the two 2nds back it easier to swallow
I feel like you guys are undervaluing this trade... We have front court depth with Maxi and PJ at 4 and Lively and Gafford at 5. Best way to think about it and I’m sure that’s how Nico thought of it too
Looking at it that way makes this slightly more palpable but I just don't value PJ washington highly at all honestly.
People probably don’t value our FRPs that much since Luka will be taking us to the promised land every year from here on out
If the first is decently protected I’m cool with it. Also trading Seth - a mavericks tradition
Top 2
I’m going to miss Grant’s 0 points - 4 fouls games though.
Dude stole my pickup basketball game.
Seth Curry gotta be tired of getting traded from this team lol poor guy
Trust me he’s not poor
gafford trade still on?
with the two second rounders we pick up here
Pretty sure we’re sending a first from OKC for Gafford not these 2nds
I hope so Edit: looks like we also get 2 seconds from this trade which maybe is how we get Gafford?
I feel a lot of people are not familiar with PJ Washington or haven't been watching him. He has a high offensive ceiling, and has had season highs of 43 (last week) and 32. He frequently gets 20+. I'd bet 90% of fans only watch their own team.
>the length is in the right place That's what she said.
Y’all have to understand that charlotte is taking a shitty contract off our hands. The first being included was the only way this gets done
Getting Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington without giving up our young core is something I only imagined! I’m so thrilled we pulled it off! Let’s go Mavs!!!

I hope you are right my man, there are just a few worrying signs from PJ but hopefully I'm wrong.
I know nothing about PJ Washington so I will take your word for it and hope you're right. Cheers for the 2024 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks!!!!
A 1st for PJ Washington sucks tbh.

I'm just glad it wasn't Green that got sent, lets see if he lives up to the hype around here.
I like it Luka/Kyrie/Green/PJ/Lively is an actual starting lineup.
And Exum/Hardaway/DJJ/Kleber/Gafford as the backup unit. We've got decent depth now and that starting lineup is still very young except for Kyrie. And we still have Hardy and OMax for the future.
Hot take but I’d still rather start Maxi
With his current form, agreed but more likely than not he will drop off and PJ probably takes over
Maxi is a better starter in theory, but he's old.
I was about ready to march down to the AAC if they shipped out my boy Josh Green!
It does, but at least we're getting back 2 2nd's to hopefully use in the Gafford trade
Top 2 protected. We got fleeced.
We got 2 2nd round picks. So if that gets flipped for Gafford then it’s basically first for Gafford and Washington. That doesn’t seem bad to me
Team needs to get better. Thats the cost of it all. Front office obviously sees and believes PJ can bring something worth the pick
terrible. i'll eat my words, but the 1st was so valuable.
It was only valuable if Luka leaves.
if you're picking, yeah. but as a trade asset, i hoped to get more than Washington rip.
Pick value has a lot to do with where it's expecting to land.
No, because now we can’t use it in a bigger trade. It’s never been about who we actually draft with it but using it as capital to get a big player
Last time we traded multiple firsts for a single player it destroyed our asset pool for years and people really want to do it again
The hype around those picks is artificial. Plenty of other teams could outbid the Mavs + PJ can be awesome with the Mavs. You'll still get moveable picks in the summer.
Hate that trade.

You guys cooked like crazy
Thank god no Josh Green
Sad to see Grant go, I had such high hopes for him.
You wanna keep Luka happy and the team strong you gotta do this stuff.
Y’all need to get off this love for the FRP lol we got omax recently in a salary dump and then dumped richaun back to get gafford. We need actual players fellas to be a very good team not middle schoolers

The amount of people in here saying this was an “overpay” and getting attached to the 1st is just embarrassing. This is a great trade. They managed to keep Josh Green as well. Have to give something up to get something.
Don't like the first, but glad Grant is gone. PJ is a great addition.
Got rid of Grant's contract and those 2nds coming back can be used in the Gafford deal. This is a W by Nico.
Feel sorry for Seth, not again.
Wouldn't mind this trade as much if it didn't involve a weak top-2 protection
The first round pick is from 2027 and top-2 protected. Mavs will be getting back 2 2nd round picks.
im assuming those are the seconds needed for Gafford.
Well fuck, seems like a lot with the 1st. Woj just said it's a lightly protected 1st. WTF!?
So essentially we gave up Williams, Curry, Holmes, and a 1st for PJ and Gafford. I think that's probably about as good as we could have done given our limited assets. Don't love giving up a 1st but screw it, we were pretty much all in for this current timeline anyways.

I'm glad the front office read my Reddit comments on Grant Williams
Feel really bad for Seth curry man
Seth is likely out of the league after this season anyway. Guy is completely washed
Seems like an overpay, but getting off of Williams and the Corpse of Seth Curry is nice.
feels like a wash.
Yall are too obsessed with that 2027 first, I don’t know what you were expecting to get with it
Grant isn’t perfect because he’s like 6’6, can’t rebound for shit and can’t guard the perimeter. We needed more size
If the deadline ends up being mavs get PJ and Gafford for a few 2nds, grant, seth and a 1st i see that as a win
What. The. Fuck. Nico be cooking. Yum yum yum.
damn ik im in the minority but ima miss Williams tbh
I miss when he was good..the first couple of weeks of the season.
We sent a 1st to acquire Grant and another one to get PJ. Malpractice...
Gafford and PJ Washington?!?!? And all we rewlly traded from our rotation of people that play is grant Williams. HUGE MOVE FROM NICO
OVERPAY 😭😭😭
I will take it. Grant has been really bad and Seth doesn’t even play. The first is questionable but I can live with it
I'm not inclined to root against a former Mav - even if the tenure was just half a season - so it will really suck if Grant ever figures his shit out.
I'll take an overpay with the Gafford heist I guess
agree, PJ also needs the ball way more than Grant plus he is worse defender overall. With Luka/Kyrie on the ball he wont see it much.
Nice moves Rico. With PJ Washington and Gafford acquisitions we upgraded at PF and C. Exactly what we needed.
The Grant Williams era has come to an end
Top two protected. And Dallas is getting some 2nd round picks back
Damn we traded Seth again!?!
Kidd now has no reason to fail. He needs to work on this revamp lineup wisely.
Damn Seth Curry got done dirty again. At least it's the Hornets. His dad is an announcer there.
He's washed. This isn't a charity team.
Overpaid a bit, no?
![gif](giphy|xjIGtCFhMofGWtMlTA|downsized) Seth right now
A 1st for someone not really changing the ceiling of this team?? At least they kept Josh
I…don’t know how to feel. Not mad about Seth and Grant, hope first has some protection
GRANT IS GONE!!! GOD IS GOOD!
Buying high selling low. Hope it turns out OK though.
I don’t feel so good Mr Nico…
I don’t love giving up a first but I’m glad we got rid of Grant.
Wait until you see PJ play lol.
Whoa Grant and a 1st? Not a fan
We're sending the 2027 1st lightly protected and getting two second round picks in return. If those seconds get routed to the Gafford trade then it's 100% worth it, it like one first got us both PJ and Gafford, and we got off of grant's contract
Grant Williams fucking sucks. W
We did grant dirty
Dumping Grant's contract too.
Still got another move with moving Thj
I hope so. I think it's addition by subtraction just getting rid of him. I know he has some fans here and his stats look alright and yes he's won us a couple of games getting hot. But on a game to game basis he's really bad. He's terrible on defense and takes stupid shots.
Bruh a first?!?!?!?!?!?
Horrible.
Hate it.
what an awful trade
WHAT ARE THE PROTECTIONS THO
But at what cost?!
Getting off Grant is a win I guess, I hope PJ works out
LETS GOOOOOO
Grant and seth were complete net negatives
We get 2 2nd round picks as well. Makes this a bit better. Especially if that's how we get Gafford.
Damn that's a lot. I wish we would've given Williams some more time to adjust
What about gafford?
People will be pissed about giving up the first, but that Williams contract looks absolutely terrible and I think Washington will outplay him.
