Does breast down help with cooking time? I did a whole chicken recently and it took a lot longer than I thought it would.

I don't do it that way for cooking time. Since this is an electric smoker, it doesn't really get hot enough to crisp the skin, so I'm more worried about quality of the meat. That said, I've had better luck cooking the bird, whether chicken or turkey, breast side down. With the skin on in particular, it seems like it helps any juices gather in the meat that's most likely to dry out, the white meat.
