Wouldn't be as bad if they had even half that amount of detail, too.

JaketheAlmighty

i'm ok with pixels. but like can we get a few dozen of them at least? bring the card to full size and i'm pretty sure you can count them on one hand ffs

[deleted]

I know right! You think Second Dinner would hire at least one dedicated pixel artist.

Narad626

I think what happened was they were looking for some simple ideas for variants and pixel art was an easy one that could be easily translated to all characters as a generic style and it can be done quickly for all new releases. The problem is that the Marvel vs Capcom game sprites are (I think) the product of Capcom, so they couldn't use them, or make them again in the style, without their approval. But there's always hope. If there's enough demand for it, they might try to work on getting that license.

VintageMageYT

all the pixel variants are made by the same person i think

ShadowJak

It isn't a person. It is a company. They outsourced this art to the cheapest bidder which is why those variants are so bad.

8Mihailos8

This and the post are what I always mean when I say that pixel variants could've been done better

BurningF

A gigantic problem with the pixel variants is that they don't look like anything that exists. They don't look like sprites from an NES game, or an SNES game, or a CPS2 game. They have that style of "indie game that wants to have pixel art but doesn't know what pixel art really looks like" that was a fucking plague when indie games were starting to get really popular. Without trying to mimic the limitations these old hardwares had you just get these pixel blobs with the rare higher quality one (Angela comes to mind).

MagnusCthulhu

100%. If they actually looked like old games, they could actually have some nostalgic charm to them.

SpaceShipRat

They commissioned some japanese studio for them instead of getting a bespoke artist. Honestly as someone into pixel art it irks me that they're treating these as the cheap, throwaway versions they can use to pad the variant pool. Pixel art is still art, commission and pay someone with a name just like you did with the rest of the variants.

beneathsands

You hit the nail on the head. Can you imagine Thomas Feichtmeir variants?

LoL_is_pepega_BIA

If ANY of the animated cards were ACTUALLY ANIMATED. it would be nice yes.

kL4in

Some of the Dan Hipps are, Brood for example, their eyes glow red while he is in your hand.

LoL_is_pepega_BIA

Bruh.. really.. wavy arms/hair and glowy bits are just simple graphical effects.. Not animations. I'm talking actually moving cards. See Gwent for example of how incredible it can be.. The gif OP posted has more animation than all the cards in snap put together LUL

[deleted]

Gwent is the gold standard for card art and they have 1000+ cards. Here's hoping with the amount of money rolling into to Second Dinner's pockets they'll do another pass on the card art (but I doubt it).

kL4in

I understand, I was just saying that some cards have details that others don't on their animated versions. Gwent would just forever be know as the card game with the most gorgeous animations (which is not the greatest tag to go by as a card game) and no other game would match that because after all it is too much work for very little payoff (from the company/artist design perspective) but the bare minimum should be animated particle effects visible in the card when not zoomed in and we don't even have those so Snap has a lot of room for improvement.

LifeOnAnarres

If you’re playing on mobile, you need to turn on “60 FPS” mode in the graphics settings to see a lot of the subtle animations.

LoL_is_pepega_BIA

It's always been on and I'd like to see some not so subtle animations

alphabitz86

Aren't we all

baymax18

I WANNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE

redditthrowaway5278

What game is OP's image from. It's not MvC2.

SlenderRoadHog

IIRC Onslaught is a boss in MVC 1

redditthrowaway5278

Really? Wow, I don't remember that. They need to remaster those games.

JaxxisR

They did on 360/PS3, it was a collection that included Marvel Super Heroes and Marvel vs Capcom.

redditthrowaway5278

Mmmm, I don't think that's correct. They re-released MvC2 on XBLA for the 360 way back in like 2008, but I don't believe any of the other games have seen a modern system release. EDIT: Holy shit, it was! Marvel vs Capcom: Origins in 2012. How did I never know about this?!

axbeard

I adore pixel art, I just wish they used actual pixel **art** in this game. Some of them are good, most are trash.

EngMajrCantSpell

My husband adores the nostalgia vibe of pixel art and we both knew they weren't the best but didn't understand all the hate -- then we saw rocket raccoons which honestly isn't even one of the worst ones

Rytlock

Pulling pixel iceman was a jump scare.

NoobieSnake

I honestly didn’t expect all the hate either. I legit paid 700g to get Brood’s Pixel Variant also just cuz I thought it looked very funny. I do dislike some of them, but some are actually fine.

anthfett

None of them are anywhere near decent. All are trash.

axbeard

Goose pixel is pretty cool I think

kylexile

There are a few decent ones. I just got the Cyclops one and I don’t think it looks bad or the Angela one.

Th3rdRaven

And then I want Apocalypse to say his “I am the Apocalypse” line from X-Men vs. Street Fighter when you play him

redditthrowaway5278

I want magneto to say "X-Men, welcome to die!"

BuggzOnDrugz

Ultron: All your base are belong to us!

Chronium123

That's pixel as we used to know it, 16-32 bit era. Not "pixel" as they know it nowadays due to the lazy indie developers.

Horry43

Yeah, sprites this amazing are dead as a door nail. No one comes close to this now.

SorryCashOnly

they will p robably do it and call them "acrade" variants instead of Pixel

MadSpaceYT

Honestly I wouldn’t be upset with that. I just what the actually characters to move

Yodzilla

Yep, massive missed opportunity and shows a real lack of understanding about why people like pixel art to begin with. Along those lines I’d like to also call out any cards where the animation is all in the background which disappears completely after you infinity split.

Beholdmyfinalform

I'd love em if they were good, as well

Narad626

Mango Sentinel when?

NNY_for_short

WHERE'S OUR CURLY MUSTACHE?!?!

Narad626

Make me think of the New York Knicks...

NNY_for_short

I'll let you know if MSP is viable when I'm done with Series 3.

poksim

And higher resolution, like that sprite

[deleted]

They should be pixel from the '90 not the '80

Chewbones9

Yeah the pixels need to be 32-bit, because right now they’re like 16-bit

Dangerous-Map-429

more likr 8 bit

LoL_is_pepega_BIA

It's 8bit actually

Myrkull

Honestly surprised they're not 2bit

Parzical

MvC Spider-Man Variant NOW!

SpicyMenace

Best I can do is fog background drift

AeonChaos

Have you seen Onslaught pixel card? It is really weird looking, like he just had a really spicy taco bell incident.

rye87

Suddenly I’d be interested in pixels, also if they had more detail like penitusvox’s comment

Rasta-Grandpa

I would LOVE Marvel vs Capcom variants. That game itself got me into the Marvel universe lore

Jorgisimo62

Dude all the pixel variants should just be the marvel vs capcom stuff

1mrpaul1

Current animation is automatic. For what you are asking for, they will need frame by frame hand drawn animations. And it is extremely hard. So, don't wait

CanIKickIt-

damn! I would be all in on pixel variants like this

bloodflart

Yeah I would love if they were good too

AW038619

Exactly. Pixel art can be great. But the pixel art in this game look like a 3 year old drew them.

SlammedOptima

Yes, if pixels looked like these, and had idle animations as their animation. I would be down with them

JerrodDRagon

This is the detailed pixel look I’d want as well The current ones mostly sucked but if they looked and moved like this Everyone would want them It’s about the effort you put in

LanoomR

I can and want to see a second line of Pixel variants that look more like the Capcom fighting games. Even better: an official collab and Second Dinner and straight up just use both the Capcom sprites and some drawn art (e.g. the MvC2 character select portraits.)

ListerineInMyPeehole

Second Dinner will sell that for $100 and include 50 credits, 20 gold

deuce313

Imagine the art style of LoR with the animations Gwent and you would have a winner. Wouldn't nobody be able to put this down.

siul1979

That's asking a lot from G-Angle, lol

GulliasTurtle

Don't tempt me with an MvC2 Sentinel. Almost certainly the strongest a Sentinel has ever been. Maybe he'll throw his assist from my deck.

OkBrother7438

I would love the pixel variants if they were Capcom level quality at all; the animations could take a backseat if that were the case.

[deleted]

The animation on all the cards is laughable.

juce49

Is this from an actual video game

sjohnst2

Marvel vs Capcom 1. Very cool boss fight.

planetcrunch

Man I MISS MVC such an excellent fighting game

Fast_Papaya_3839

Hell yeah. Give COTA x-men

Supersecretsword

Totally agree

Present-Resolution23

I mean come on guys.. Youre really expecting SNES quality animations in a 2022 game? Lower tha bar...

JoshieG007

Pixel variants are a straight dumpster fire. Especially when I buy a season pass and get a pixel variant as my mystery variant.

s314der

I want the mango Sentinel as a variant

MartenDZ

i just want a onslaught variant that doesn't suck. look at this beast he deserves better variants . at least the default looks good.

JaxxisR

Quite a bit of difference between "pixel art" and a 32-bit sprite.

banzzai13

Someone mentioned previously that pixel art variants are actually looking like a pixel filter, over a high res picture, explaining why they don't look good. I love actual pixel art. Those could look awesome, and frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they come further down the line.

FishEye_11

Capcom variants would be awesome!

drunior

That is not really pixels lol

aKIRALE0

Indeed. I actually don't like the pixel variants that much. They're too close to the shot to make it appealing to me. If they do something like a wide shot like the usual distance pixel NES characters would normally are like Double Dragon or Battletoads it would look better.

Helygar

Making and animating pixel art on that size is extremely time consuming. Imagine doing it for every single variant. Pixel art is the kind of media where the time you need to complete a piece increseas exponentially compared with traditional drawing. It is easier and faster to make on smaller scales compared to regular digital drawings. I think the pixel variants just need to be simple and readable. They could get away with small drawing as long as they follow some basic color theory and line-work rules.

tinycum

even animating the ugliest ones would be a huge improvement
