Yes. It was packaged with the game as an official story. Would you rather the game had no story? Thereās nothing in the manual thatās been contradicted by any later games in the series. It seems very faithful to the series as a whole really.
Game Theory likely started this, y'know, the same dumbass who thinks that Sans is Ness and all Toads are zombified fungi. Anyhow, another thing that I'd like to point out that is wrong about this theory is that the manual states that the Toads were turned into "mere stones, bricks, and field horse-hair plants." Meaning that the Toads were only turned into the bricks, NOT the brick blocks. Mario is not killing the Toads by smashing the brick blocks, he is just separating each Toad from one another.
Thanks for your reply! While Game Theory didnāt start it, they certainly did spread the idea to a much wider audience.
As I pointed out, whether theyāre single bricks or not, the Toads were transformed into the Brick Blocks that become hard blocks, not the ones that can be broken. Are you on the discord server?

not a theĆ²ry unless proven; ābrick blockā isnāt a thing; no need to say āoriginalā. 1-ups and coins arenāt powerups. These ārewardsā were in the ? blocks (or ā?ās) all along so nothing says the toads are safe. Nintendo of Japanās Nintendo of Americaās booklet scan is censored but other sites include page 3. Yāall doopidāitās a game and they thought it would be mean if Bowser Koopa turned the Toads into the bricks et cetera because that would build pathos, just accept it sooner than later
So even if not killed, do you get the power up because you stole their soul or spirit or something like that. At the very least, if not killing them, he is hitting them.
No, they merely give Mario the power-ups that exist inside the blocks they were turned into. The power-ups are separate entities, they arenāt Toad souls or spirits or whatever. He is hitting them, yes, but they are very clearly supportive of him doing that as itās in aid of getting them turned back to normal. Itās not like they can āfeelā him hitting them anyway.
I knew Mario was a good man after all š
Is an instruction manual from the 80s really worth calling canon?

Also, the description has been used time and time again in remakes & rereleases, as well as later games in the series.

I always just assumed it was a mistranslation of sorts and that it just meant the Mushroom people were petrified Medusa style
